Robert kept busy at work. He was angry at Cora for not understanding, and not willing to go to Lisbon. He needed her there, not just for the pictures, but he was a better version of his self with her next to him. They would be back in time for Mary's birthday. She was turning two, she would not remember anything from this time.
In the even during dinner, Robert came home, but disappeared in his office as soon as the children were in bed. He barely spoke a word with Cora, both begin stubborn.
Cora ironed Robert shirts; she knew he wanted (to take) them with him to Lisbon. She contemplated about not packing his suitcase, but she always did that. And although she was still mad (that) he was going, she wanted him to look good and have everything. He was still asleep, he had a flight in the afternoon, and he slept in.
She walked in into the bedroom, he had to wake up, otherwise he would be late. "Robert, your taxi will be here in one hour, you need to get up." She shook his shoulder.
Robert opened one eye and tried to pull Cora close, but she stepped back from the bed, before he could touch her. He sighed and got in the shower.
His suitcase was waiting at the door, Mary and Edith in front of it. Cora was standing in the doorway to the living room. Robert bent down to kiss Mary and Edith goodbye.
"Have a safe flight, Robert." She crossed her arms over her chest.
"I will let you know when I am in the hotel." He stepped towards Cora to kiss her, at that same time the doorbell rang. His taxi was there. Cora waved him goodbye, with Mary crying in her arms.
When the car began to drive, he had the urge to jump out and stay in London. But they expected him in Lisbon tonight. He had tried to rebook the suite to a normal room, but that wasn't possible anymore. He was dreading the stay.
"I am safe at the hotel, wish you were here xxx. Robert"
"Have a good trip, see you in 5 days. Cora."
Robert gulped, they never had a fight for so long. Of course, there had been fights before and days of not speaking, but this was extreme. Cora was really mad this time. But, he thought, she needed to understand how busy he was. Because of his job they lived in this wealth.
Cora couldn't sleep, she tossed around in her bed. Robert was in Lisbon for 4 days now and would come home tomorrow. She started to really miss him. He made a video call everyday to see Mary and Edith, then they spoke briefly. She hated it, that she missed him. There is no difference, if he is at his office or in Lisbon, she said to herself. Deep down she knew she was lying to herself. She was unreasonably mad at him. And she did truly miss him. She picked up her phone and texted:"Darling, I hope I don't wake you. Have a safe flight tomorrow, I miss you. XXX"
Cora got out of bed, she wasn't going to get sleep this way. She made herself a cup of tea and sat down in front of the big sliding doors in the living room. She looked at the stars, one of those stars was Robert's. She fell her tears coming up. Why did she make such a fuss about this trip? Mary wouldn't even know if they celebrated a day or two later.
She neglected Robert, now he was alone in that enormous suite. The photographer he brought with him started working for them, after Edith was born. Cora had less time to go across the country for shoots, she only did the bigger projects. Lisbon was a bigger shoot and she let Robert down. She looked at her phone, hoping she had woken Robert up.
Mary's voice woke her up, she had fallen asleep on the ground. She was cold to the bone. She walked upstairs and was relieved she closed the gate last night, Mary was standing in front of it. "How did you get out of bed?" She picked her up and held her close. "You should be asleep, darling."
"Daddy?" Mary's voice was full of tears.
"Daddy is coming home soon darling, real soon. Come I will bring you back to bed."
Mary wrapped both arms around her neck. "Mama, no. I sleep you?"
Cora pulled her even closer, cupping her head with her hand. "You can sleep in my bed, of course sweetie."
The morning didn't seem to end, the meeting was taking longer than Robert had expected. Finally, just before lunch, they had wrapped up. The manager of the office in Lisbon, asked if he would like to stay for lunch. But he had reclined, he had to rush to the airport, in three hours his flight was leaving.
The taxi was waiting on the other side of the street, Robert run across the street without looking. All he remembered was a loud noise and bright lights coming his way.
Maja and Cora were in the kitchen, baking a cake for tomorrow "Why are you so restless?" Maja asked.
"I don't know, I have a feeling something is wrong. I will check on Mary and Edith.
Edith was sleeping in her playpen and Mary was playing nicely with her toys. She gave her a kiss on the head and played with her hair. Mary looked up at Cora, smiled and went on with her toys.
The doorbell rang. Two policemen were standing there. "We are looking for Mrs. Crawley."
"I am, I am Cora Crawley. How can I help you?"
"Can we please come in?"
Cora stepped aside to let them in. She led them to the sitting room. She sat down. Mary came hopping in but stopped when she saw the two big policemen. Cora pulled her on her lap.
"Is it correct your husband is Robert Crawley?" One of the officers asked.
"I am married to Robert Crawley." Cora answered fearfully.
Maja came in with a glass of water the officers.
"Is it correct that your husband is in Lisbon right now." Said that same agent.
Cora pressed a hand to her chest. "He is, but he should be in the air now, on his way home."
"I am afraid he isn't in that plane right now." He said.
The other officer filled it in. "Your husband had an accident, he is in the hospital now."
Cora covered her mouth with her hand and was fighting against her tears. "Is he alright? How bad is it? What kind of accident? Is he awake?"
"Try to stay calm Mrs. your husband wasn't awake when we got the phone call. The hospital asked us to tell you, so you can go to Lisbon to be with him."
Cora started shaking, Maja had rushed to her and took Mary from her lap and gave her to one of the officers.
"Ssssstttt. We don't know what has happened, sssstttt. We will get you on a flight to Lisbon as soon as possible." Maja brushed her hands over Cora's back. "Sssst, try to stay calm."
"There is a flight in two hours, we arranged that you could go on that one. Can you pack a bag, we will drive you to the airport." The first officer said.
"But my children, I can't take them with me." Cora was confused.
"I will stay with them and will call Rosamund to help me." Maja said. "I will help you pack your bag.
"I didn't give him a kiss, when he left for Lisbon. I didn't kiss him, I let him go while I was angry. I didn't say a proper goodbye." She sank sobbing on her knees.
Cora sat in the plane, she felt numb. The flight attendants knew what happened and took good care of her. At the airport a taxi was waiting to bring her to the hospital.
A doctor greeted her, there was an interpreter present.
Robert was hit by a city bus, he broke his shoulder, arm and leg on one side. He had a head injury from the collision. They couldn't say anything about the damage and the recovery.
Cora sat down next to him and took his hand. With her thumb she brushed the top of his hand. "Darling, please, wake up. I am so sorry. Please, stay with me. Please, don't leave me." She bent over to kiss him, taking his head in her hands. "Please, darling, please wake up."
Cora had fallen asleep on the side of Robert's bed. She was woken by an older nurse. "We have special beds for family', she said in broken English.
"Thank you, I will stay with my husband if that's ok." She got a puzzled look from the nurse. She dug up her phone and used google translate. The nurse started smiling and said "Sim."
Cora understood what that meant. Yes. She only had to leave the room when the doctors needed to do some tests. All this time Robert wasn't waking up.
She sat back at his side, all the time holding his hand and praying he would wake up. The doctor said the swelling in his brain was subsiding, and that was a good sign. She should keep talking to him, keeping the brain stimulated, maybe it would wake him up.
She told him everything about last week, how she missed him. She told him about the decorations in the house, and the cake she was making. She told him about that night she was watching the stars. She told him she wanted another baby with him.
She felt a slight squeeze in her hand. She looked up and saw that Robert had opened his eyes. He gave her a faint smile.
"You are awake, darling, my prayers are answered, you are awake. I am so sorry, my darling. I love you so much, I was stupid and stubborn. I love you with all my heart, I love you."
Robert squeezed her hand again and tried to say something.
Cora put her finger on his lips. "Stttt, don't. I will call for the doctor."
The doctor had run some tests and said Robert was incredibly lucky. It looked like there weren't any side effects, just the broken bones.
Cora returned back into the room and Robert took her hand. "I want another baby with you too."
"We will focus on your healing first, shall we?" Cora chuckled.
It took some days, before Robert was fit to fly. They had to get on a special flight, Robert couldn't sit normally, with the plaster on his upper body and full left leg.
At home the whole family was waiting to greet him. But Robert wanted to see Mary first.
"Darling, mama and I missed your second birthday, but we have a gift for you." He looked at Cora. "Can you get it?"
Cora came back with the present. Mary ripped the paper of and radiantly held out her Baby Born "Baby, mine!" She glimmered
