"Robert, did you see this?" Cora entered Robert's office, without knocking.
"Did he see what?" Violet asked.
Cora hadn't seen her in the room and got flustered by her. "Harold wants you to come with him to America to open an office in New York." She ignored Violet and addressed Robert.
"New York? Why would we want to open an office in New York?" Violet asked
"No, not we, Harold wants to open an office in New York, he wants to move back."
"Mama, listen before you judge, please. Cora darling, why does he need me?"
"Harold feels that your international knowledge can be helpful." Cora answered
"I know a little about opening offices in Europe, but America is a different story. Can we talk about this later?" He looked at his mother.
Cora understood his hint and left the room.
"Why should you go to America to help Harold? Robert, tell me."
"Mama, I don't know, I have to talk about this with Harold, but please don't come to conclusions without knowing all the facts."
Violet's dislike against America was almost scary. And he didn't understand it. He had the best thing America could offer, his wife.
Cora was already home when Robert arrived home. He first walked over to kiss Mary and Edith, nanny was with them. He found Cora in the kitchen. She was dancing in front of the stove, while stirring the pots. He got close, wrapping his arms around her and they moved together to the music coming out of the radio. Cora's body firm against his. Robert loved these moments, he turned Cora around(,) so she was facing him. He smiled down at her and twirled her around. When he pulled her close again, he buried his face in her neck. "I love you, my American princess."
Cora pulled back a little and looked at him with surprise: "That's a long time ago, you called me that."
"Hmmm, I know." Robert pulled her close again. "You reminded me today of your American blood." He kissed her cheek.
Cora turned her face, so he kissed her on the lips, they shared a passionate kiss. They got interrupted by Mary's little voice. "Mommy, dinner?"
Cora let go of Robert and lowered herself to brush Mary's cheek. "I made chicken nuggets especially for you today, go get your sister." She got up and kissed Robert again. "Can you set the table?"
Dinner had been relaxed, although Edith was fussing with her food, and Mary got annoyed by that. Robert was able to calm them both down.
"When is Harold planning on going to America?" Robert asked, while feeding Edith.
"I don't know exactly, he was talking about next year. But I'm not sure if he meant the beginning or the end of that year? I don't know."
"And you don't know why he wants to talk to me?"
"He said something about you knowing a lot about opening offices and knowing how to get in contact with the right people. He also wants to use your knowledge to promote the business in America."
"Will he move 'Levinson and son' to America, or just open a second office?"
"Mary stop that!" Cora corrected Mary, she was throwing her food on the ground. "I think he wants to move back to America." Cora bent down to pick up Mary's food. Mary saw her opportunity to also toss Cora's plate on the ground. "Mary! That's it, no dessert for you, off to bed." She picked Mary up from her chair and carried her upstairs. Mary was screaming and crying in her arms.
"No, not to bed. Daddy help." Mary screamed.
Robert was already getting up, but Cora gave him a look that made him sit down again. He understood Cora needed to handle this behaviour right now.
"We don't throw with our food, you know that! Now you can say sorry or stay here and go to bed."
Mary just crossed her arms in front of her. Cora needed to remind herself not to laugh. In a way it was adorable seeing her three-year-old this way.
"Ok, that's your choice then." Cora pulled Mary's shirt over her head and tried to get her pyjama on, but Mary was resisting. "As you wish, you will lay in your bed in your undies." She picked her up and laid her down. She gave Mary a kiss on her forehead.
When she came down, Robert had cleaned up the floor. And there was a plate with toast waiting for her. "I couldn't safe your dinner, Isis was faster". He chuckled.
"That's ok, thank you" She sat down with a deep sigh.
Robert took Edith out of her highchair, "I will bring this one to bed. I will be back down in a minute". It took longer than expected, and Cora got in the hallway to check on Robert. She heard his voice. "Mama, loves you very much, now go to sleep." Robert had gone into Mary's room. Cora touched the Christmas decorations. She had a hard time decorating the house this year, the loss of Patrick was still heavy on her heart.
Robert touched her shoulder and she got spooked. "Where were you in your mind?" He saw a tear in her eye. He pulled her close. "Oh darling, Mary loves you I know."
"It is not just that." Cora sniffed. "Why does she resent Edith so much and why do we not have our baby boy here with us."Her body was shaking as she tried holding back her tears
Robert pressed her head against his shoulder. "Let it out, just let it out." He held her until her crying stopped.
Cora brushed her cheeks dry. "Enough crying, we were talking about Harold."
Robert looked her in her eyes, and saw she was indeed ready to talk about something else.
Robert walked into Harold's office. It was still strange to see a different assistant at the desk. He remembered the first day he walked in here as yesterday. It was almost 5 years ago, but he could see Cora at this desk. He shook his head to clear this thought. "Good morning, I have an appointment with Mr. Levinson."
"What is your name sir?" The assistant asked.
Before Robert could answer, he heard Harold's voice. "Come on in, you want some coffee? Oh, no of course, you want tea." Harold smiled.
Robert followed him into his office. "What do you think I can do for you?"
"Well, I want to move this office back to the USA, but I need some promotional work done there, and you are the best in that department."
"Harold, I know the European market, but I don't know nothing from America. You people think differently." He smirked.
"Don't tell your wife that." Harold chuckled. "Maybe you are right, but still, you know a lot more about advertising then I do."
"What does Madeleine think of moving to America?"
"She follows me wherever I go." Harold answered.
They had talked for hours and decided Robert would come with Harold for three weeks to set up his business there.
"When will you leave?" Cora asked. They were in bed and Cora was curled up against Robert.
"February, early March, but I told Harold, I need to be back home before Mary's birthday. I am not missing another birthday of her." He twirled Cora's hair around his finger.
Cora leaned on her elbows; "I will never forgive you if you did." But she said it with a cheeky smile.
"All four of us could go, you can show me New York."
"Darling, I would love to show you New York, but we will do that another time. I can't leave, I have that photo shoot mid February, for the new magazine."
"Even better, we will go another time, just the two of us." Robert pulled her close.
