Irrelevant?

"Uzumaki-kun, do you think there's any worth in irrelevant stories?"

"Huh? What kind of question is that?"

"It's just something that came to me. I apologize if it confuses you."

"Nagito, half the time we speak you confuse me. We're out here eating ice cream, having a good time. And then you go and say something like that. If Fuyuhiko wasn't in the bathroom, he would be cursing you out."

"Ahaha, yes. But that is what he usually does, isn't it?"

"Yeah, it kinda loses its meaning after a while."

"That's a strange way to put it, Uzumaki-kun."

"What do you mean?"

"When you phrase it like that, it sounds as if Kuzuryu-kun no longer being threatening is a bad thing. Don't you think it's better that he's more relaxed around us?"

"I think that's just you reading too much into my words, Nagito. Also, Fuyuhiko was never really all that threatening to me. It's just that it was sort of new, to be cussed like that all the time. You know?"

"That is the power behind words, I suppose. They allow us to communicate, but they can also confuse us."

Naruto sighed as he looked down at his ice cream.

He, Nagito, and Fuyuhiko were visiting a local ice cream shop. It wasn't anything fancy, but it was comfortable. Naruto especially liked that they had outside sitting. It was just more relaxing to eat outside than be stuck inside. But that was just his opinion.

Anyway, where was he? Oh yeah, Nagito and his usual weird self.

"Look, we're getting off topic here. Weren't you saying something about irrelevant stories?"

The Ultimate Lucky Student blinked.

"Oh yes, there was that. My apologies again. It's just so fun to talk like this that I sometimes lose my train of thought."

For some reason, Naruto didn't buy that, but he also didn't press the luckster.

"It's just interesting to think about, wouldn't you say? What if we were all part of a novel? Do you like reading, Uzumaki-kun?"

Another tangent.

Naruto didn't mind indulging Nagito, though.

"Not really. I mean, I have read a lot more since coming to this world, but that's only because I had to. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have gotten as far as I did without Sonia helping me."

"She is amazing, isn't she? It's not hard to see why she's the leader of her people."

"She's not the leader yet," Naruto corrected him. "It takes a lot to lead people."

Nagito smiled at him. "But you do it so easily. It must be part of your talent."

As the Ultimate Ninja? Hardly.

"I don't know about that. I mean, I was striving to be the leader of my village back in my world, but I came here before I could get to that position."

"You did mention that, yes. I'm sorry that you can no longer achieve that, Uzumaki-kun."

Nagito's words were sincere.

Naruto shrugged it off. "You don't have to apologize. It's still hard to think about sometimes, but I've also accepted my circumstances."

Such a lie. Or was it a half-truth? Naruto didn't know anymore.

"I don't think there are many people who could still continue moving forward after such an event."

"Don't give me too much credit." Especially since he didn't deserve it. Naruto changed the subject, "Where were you going with this?"

This tangent had been long.

Nagito blinked again. "Oh yes, forgive me. I got too excited about wanting to learn more about your world. I sometimes feel like I only have a glimpse of what your old life was like."

That's because it was. Naruto had purposefully left out certain details, like how he had grown up being resented by the villagers. It's not that he wanted to lie to his friends. He just didn't think it was important. Not anymore.

"I was curious to know if you liked to read."

Oh yeah, that was the question.

"Not really. Well, my master was a writer. Did I tell you guys that?"

Naruto couldn't remember. The sleepover hadn't been that long ago, though. Like a week had passed?

"No, you didn't." Nagito smiled. "I'm sure some of the others would love to learn about this."

Naruto doubted that very much.

"Don't get your hopes up. Only Teruteru and Kazuichi would probably care."

"How so?"

"He wrote porn."

The look Naruto got from Nagito made him laugh out loud.

Priceless.

"Is that true?"

"Pfft-ahahahaha! It is, yeah. Stupid books sold like no tomorrow for some reason. I never got the appeal of them."

He would love to have them now. Not to read them of course. Get your mind out of the gutter. Just as a memento to his former master.

"I'm surprised." Nagito cupped his chin in thought. "You said he was a dirty old man, but I didn't think he would also write such….novels."

Naruto snorted. "Kakashi-sensei read them all the time. I swear, I was surrounded by perverts."

"Oh? Then was Koizumi-san correct? Are you one as well?"

"I will throw this cup of ice cream at you."

Nagito just laughed.

Naruto sulked. "I may have done some questionable things at times, but I was never that bad. That guy used to visit brothels all the time!"

"And you went with him? And nobody cared?" Nagito's eyes widened a little. "Your old world was pretty lax, wasn't it?"

"In some ways." Naruto had never really considered it from that angle, but compared to how stringent people were about age in this new world, it made sense for Nagito to be surprised like this. "I guess it was because I was a ninja already. I mean, it wasn't exactly acceptable or admired to take a thirteen year old to brothels, but my old master didn't really care about stuff like that."

"Fascinating."

Not really.

"But he didn't start out writing porn. His first book was actually pretty awesome."

Nagito looked intrigued now, especially since Naruto seemed excited about it.

"Really?"

"Yeah! It was almost like a story about his old adventures. I told you that my old master wanted peace, right?"

He had. That's how they knew why Naruto was so motivated by the concept.

"That's basically the problem that the protagonist is facing as he travels the world, meeting all types of other ninja. He's faced with that problem and many times he's told that it's pointless and that he should just give up. But he never gets discouraged. He's always determined. It's where I get my name from."

"It is?"

"Yep! My parents asked for his permission before I was born. I guess they wanted me to be a ninja like the one in the book." Naruto blushed a little as he scratched his cheek. "I don't know if I am, but it's still flattering."

Nagito shook his head with a smile. "I'm sure your parents would be very proud of you, Uzumaki-kun."

Naruto hoped so too.

"It does sound like an interesting tale. I'm saddened that I'll never be able to read it."

Naruto was too. "Yeah, I have it memorized. But I don't think I could ever translate it to paper. I've never been one to write." Sighing, he glanced up at the clear blue sky. There were hardly any clouds today. "Maybe I'll run into someone who can someday."

That would be awesome.

"There are plenty of writers in the world," Nagito said. "I'm sure any of them could."

Maybe. But if Naruto ever did get someone to re-write Jiraiya's novel for him, he wanted to make sure it was done right.

Wait a moment. Why were they talking about this again?

"I think we got off track. Again."

Nagito chuckled. "Oh yes. I'm sorry, but I got to hear more about your old master and more about yourself. It's a good trade off."

Right.

"That's my answer. I don't really like to read much." Naruto doubted that part of himself would change, even as he got older.

"Novels are an interesting thing," Nagito said after a moment of silence. "Have you ever wondered about the parts that don't make it to the pages?"

What?

"What are you talking about?"

"An author always has this first idea of what he's going to write. You can even call it a draft, just in his head. But then, as he writes, he's certain to omit a few things. Either because he didn't think it was important or because it couldn't fit anywhere. What do you think about plot points like that? Do you think they matter?"

Naruto had never really thought about it. He didn't think Nagito was such a big reader to even think about such things either.

Looks like they were both learning new things about themselves.

"I don't know. If the author didn't include it into the story, doesn't that mean that it's worthless?"

Nagito crossed his arms, frowning somewhat. "That's a rather brutal response coming from you, Uzumaki-kun. I thought for sure you would say it would still have meaning."

"It's just a story."

"What if it was about every day life?"

"What?"

"Take us for example. If we were part of some story, do you think this conversation would be added in?"

Naruto almost snorted. "That's assuming we were even the main characters."

Nagito smiled at this. "I'm sure you would be, Uzumaki-kun. Me? I'm just a side character."

Always so melodramatic.

"Just humor me for a bit," Nagito urged him.

Sighing, Naruto rested his cheek on his palm as he leaned on the small round table.

"I don't know. I guess it depends on what the point of the story was."

"Oh?"

"Most stories have a point, right? If it doesn't help drive that point, then an author is sure to remove it. That's what I would do."

"That's very efficient. Is that why you think it's irrelevant?"

"Yeah."

"What about your readers? Would they think so as well?"

"Can't say. I guess it depends on the personality of the author. Maybe he's just writing for himself, or he's trying to entertain. If he's trying to entertain rather than just writing for himself, he might include as much as possible."

"The two don't have to be exclusive. They could co-exist."

Naruto sighed. "I don't know. This is just me talking on the spot. I have never given something like that much thought."

"I guess that's where we're different, Uzumaki-kun." Maybe it was because the blond was in the spotlight and he was not? Keeping that to himself, Nagito then said, "I would probably enjoy such side stories a lot more than the main plot."

Probably because he would never be the protagonist himself, even though it was something that Nagito was interested in. Unfortunately, he just wasn't as talented.

"Just because they're side stories I wouldn't dismiss them on the spot. They might prove to be as important depending on how you look at them."

Naruto thought about it again and chuckled as he leaned back in his hair.

"They would be charming, I guess. Especially if it was about characters you don't see much of."

"I'm glad you understand."

The two boys chuckled to themselves.

This was the scene Fuyuhiko arrived to, and it made him look on between the two with a raised eyebrow.

"Something I miss?"

"Not much." Naruto threw him a grin. "You were in the bathroom for a while. Get backed up?"

"Don't be disgusting."

Nagito shook his head with another smile. "We saved your ice cream for you, Kuzuryu-kun."

Fuyuhiko thanked him as he sat down to join them.

The three went on to converse about pointless and irrelevant things.

It was just another day in their lives.

I will sporadically update this.

These chapters will vary in length. They won't be in order. Sometimes you'll have to guess where they fit into the main story for yourselves. It's only been three months in the timeline, but I guess a lot's happened, huh.

Anyway, enjoy.
