Chapter 4

After lunch they returned home, the original plan of playing in the park had been nixed by the broken ribs so instead it was snuggling and Disney films in pyjamas. It was pizza for tea, still cuddling, Arizona's phone ringing disturbed the peace,

"Hey Callie" Arizona greeted taking a deep breath, suppressing everything she wanted to scream at her ex-wife. This was for Sofia, this was to make sure the person that hurt Sofia spent the rest of their lives in jail, this was for the evidence, she could be civil, she could keep her mouth shut.

"Hey is Sofia there?" Callie replied, Arizona covered the mouthpiece,

"It's Mama"

Sofia's face broke out in excitement as she grabbed the phone, helping to ease Arizona's mind, if Sofia was excited to talk to Callie that reduced the chances it was Callie. Another part of her mind scalded it, it was never going to be Callie, Callie would never hurt Sofia. Still she had thought Callie would never let it happen but she had. Sofia had been hurt on Callie's watch.

"Mamma we are watching frozen" she said joyfully, "And we had ice cream and pizza" Sofia continued. Arizona listened carefully for any hint of abuse, neglect anything knowing it wasn't Callie, Callie couldn't be the abuser, she just couldn't, but someone was and maybe something could hint who.

"Sounds like fun, I have to go Sofia I'm being paged, I love you" Callie hung up. Arizona was grateful the phone call was short; Sofia hadn't said anything about the morning activities.

"Right goose, it's time for bath and bed" Arizona ordered checking the time.

"Can you help me Mommy?" Sofia asked shyly as they got to the bathroom.

"Course goose, I'd love to help" Arizona hugged her daughter proud she'd asked for help. They navigated bath time, Sofia even playing with her toys this time, Arizona encouraging her.

"What story do you want baby?" Arizona asked next.

"You don't mind?" Sofia checked, twisted the bedsheets nervously. Arizona had spent part of the first frozen movie changing the mattress and putting a plastic sheet over it.

"I love reading stories" Arizona promised, Sofia nodded picking a book off the bookcase.

"Once upon a time" Arizona began. It wasn't long until Sofia was asleep. Arizona eased herself off the bed and into her living room. She desperately needed to make some calls.

"Bailey" the phone was answered.

"It's Arizona, I need a meeting with you as soon as possible," Arizona begged "Can you come to mine?"

"Okay I have just finished I can swing past your place" Bailey offered, something was wrong, Arizona barely ever called her and had never asked for a meeting outside work. Also, her voice was trembling, Bailey's heart sank, was Arizona leaving, had she taken up one of the multiple other job offers she was always getting.

"Thanks" Arizona hung up pouring herself a glass of wine before tipping it away, she needed to be sober to look after Sofia. Instead, she sat on the sofa crying as quietly as possible letting herself feel the events of today.

It was 10 minutes later Bailey was knocking on the door. Seeing her friends swollen red rimmed eyes and tear tracks down her face Bailey knew she had made the right decision coming around straight away.

"Come in, do you want a drink?" Arizona ushered her friend in trying to hold back her tears before collapsing into her friends arm desperately needing a hug.

"Arizona" Bailey tried hugging her friend tightly, "Arizona what's up" Arizona shook her head slightly trying to stop the tears wiping them away. Bailey held her friend up escorting her to the sofa.

"Sofia," Arizona managed to mutter,

"Is she okay?" Bailey asked concerned looking around the room trying to gather clues. Arizona shook her head no, what had happened was definitely not okay.

"No," the sobs became more, Bailey held her tightly hugging her friend.

"Where is she? Arizona, what's going on?" Bailey pushed really worried about Sofia. Something bad must have happened to make Arizona this distressed.

"In her room, she is sleeping in her room, someone's been hurting her" Arizona choked out.

"What do you mean?" Bailey replied concerned,

"Last night I found Sofia in the kitchen trying to clean her sheets, she had wet herself. I helped her to change and found bruises, today we went to the NAI unit. She has 2 broken ribs, 10 belt marks, several grab marks and is under weight and that's just what we can see" Arizona sobbed. "Someone has been hurting my little girl and I didn't realise"

Bailey held her friend rocking her slightly, she was angry she'd been there when that little girl was born, she'd seen her grow up, she considered her a niece. She thought about Tuck her own son who'd she'd sent away multiple times to his dad's house a man she trusted how she would feel if he came back bruised. It was a thought no parent ever wanted to think

"What do you need?" Bailey asked,

"School hours initially, the police are investigating I had to ask permission to tell you, but nobody else can know"

"Done"

"Do you know any good therapists?" Arizona joked,

"You have a therapist, I know I see the reports, ask her for a Peds one" Bailey suggested, referring to the mandated sessions for PTSD that all the plane crash survivors had been ordered to. Arizona had been going again since Callie had left.

"Good idea, I just don't know what to do? How could this happen?" Arizona asked sounding more lost than Bailey had ever heard.

"There are bad people in this world. Bad evil people." They sat in silence, Arizona holding Bailey for dear life, she needed a friend so badly.

"You are going to be okay, as is Sofia, you both have an army of people wanting to help you. I promise" Bailey said stroking the Peds surgeons' hair. It wasn't long until Arizona had cried herself to sleep. Having had very little sleep in the days leading up to Sofia arriving. Bailey carefully extracted herself. Going down the hall to check on Sofia for herself, the little girl was fast asleep in bed and had thrown off the cover, Bailey could see with the light from the night light a welt between the frozen pyjama top and bottom. Keeping her composure, she re tucked the little girl in and closed the door.

In the living room Arizona was sleeping in what looked to be the most uncomfortable position ever. Miranda woke her gently, shaking her shoulder.

"You need to sleep in your own bed, to look after your girl I just checked on her she is sleeping, go to bed" she ordered. Arizona slightly dazed just nodded. Nobody argued with Bailey. Not even in their own homes.

Bailey left, letting herself out, Arizona got changed and went to bed checking again on Sofia. It was early when she felt the bed dip, and a little hand gently poke her.

"I wet the bed," a little voice whispered, Arizona was awake instantly,

"It's okay goose, let's get you cleaned up" She put her leg on and lifted her little girl up changing her into fresh pyjamas.

"You wanna sleep with Mommy?" she asked feeling too exhausted to start to change the sheets and was relieved when Sofia nodded. They fell asleep again cuddled together.

Sofia woke up first the next morning. Crawling out from under her mother's tight grip she went to her room the urine-stained sheets still there. Her cheeks flamed with shame; she didn't care what her Mommy said she was looser. She could hear the words of her abuser mocking her, telling her only losers and babies wet the bed.

Tears were rolling down her cheeks thick and fast, Penny was right.

Well done too all that guessed.
