Thank you for all the wonderful reviews, I wrote a really long chapter to say thank you and how much I appreciate you taking the time to let me know your thoughts.
Chapter 5
From behind she felt arms hugging her, it was her Mommy who'd heard her get up and followed her. Taking slightly longer due to the need to put on her leg, not that she did it properly, just well enough to hobble down the corridor. It broke her heart to hear her normally so happy daughter crying.
"You know I had problems after my plane crash" Arizona revealed, "Your Mamma found me and I couldn't get to the toilet on time and I wet myself" It was embarrassing, and she hadn't told anyone, but Sofia needed to hear it, she needed to know it was normal to fail, "And your Mamma helped me shower" Arizona wiped away her own tears feeling her own pain along with her daughters, telling the story making it sound more loving and gentle than it had been.
"Why'd you wet Mommy?" Sofia asked wiping Arizona's tears away.
"Because I'd been through something scary, because my brain was really upset, and I was having nightmares and when that happens sometimes your body struggles too, and your brain can't say anything because it's too scared, so your body does it for you" Arizona explained trying to explain how she had felt in simple language.
"It was scary Mommy" Sofia whispered, "I tried to be good I really did" she continued Arizona stayed on the floor hugging her daughter despite the fact her leg was on awkwardly and digging into her stump, this was more important. So much more.
"You are a good girl Sofia" Arizona told her truthfully, Sofia was a little naughty at time but what 6-year-olds weren't.
"But you and Mamma don't want me, Penny says you had to go to court to see who got me" Sofia cried. Arizona's heart broke, how had they let their daughter think that. How did their daughter think she was that unlovable? She had failed as a mother if her daughter believed that. If only she could talk to Callie, they needed to correct this urgently!
"Baby no, absolutely no, your Mamma and I both wanted you so much, we loved you so much, more than anything in the world. We both wanted you to live with us, and we couldn't decide so we went the court to help us. I won but your Mamma she was really sad, and I was really sad, that she was sad, so I let you go with Mamma and Penny because then you'd be happy, and Mamma would be happy" Arizona was crying more now she'd been so wrong.
"But Penny said you didn't want me anymore" Sofia was sobbing now too; Arizona clutched her daughter rocking her on the floor, wishing more than anything she could punch perfect Penny in her stupid face.
"I want you so much, so much I love you more than anything" Arizona reassured her daughter, stroking her hair.
"Do you love me more than ice cream?" Sofia asked insecurely,
"Yes" Arizona didn't even have to think,
"Even more than pizza?"
"Yes"
"Even more than Frozen?"
"I love you even more than Frozen, ice cream and pizza together"
"That's a lot Mommy" Sofia said seriously, Frozen was the best thing ever and her mommy's favourite film, that was a lot of love. Arizona's phone rang.
"Meredith, hey, oh the zoo, I'm running late can you drop Zola here? Great" she hung up, having totally forgotten about her promise to take Sofia and Zola to the zoo today, still it worked as a good distraction and shouldn't acerbate Sofia's injuries.
"Right goose, we have to get changed and have breakfast Zola is coming over today and we are going to the zoo"
"Yay" Sofia cheered climbing of Arizona, "I want to wear my princess dress can I Mommy?"
"Of course, Belle or Elsa?"
"I want to be Belle and then Zola can be Elsa" Sofia decided
"Breakfast first" Arizona ordered watching her beautiful daughter dance down the hall. She stripped the sheets off the bed, carrying them down to the washing machine.
Sofia was sat at the breakfast table, she had gotten 2 bowls out and the milk, Arizona reached for the cereal and orange juice. This time Arizona chose Weetabix, after seeing fruit loops in her vomit yesterday she had gone off the colourful cereal. She was pleased to see Sofia eating the whole bowl of cereal, without worrying about her weight.
They ate breakfast talking about what they would see at the zoo. Sofia wanted to see the tigers, and bears, Arizona liked the penguins.
The door knocked as Sofia was getting changed, Arizona opened it. Meredith and Zola were there.
"Hey Zola, Sofia is in her room she wanted to wear her princess dress, she has one for you if you want to change" Arizona offered watching Zola's eyes light up, there was no goodbye to Meredith as she took off down the hall.
"Thanks for this, she is really excited to see her best friend again" Meredith said handed over Zola's bag of snacks, juice and clean clothes. Arizona nodded, she was exhausted and really wanted to confide in her friend but knew she couldn't.
"Are you okay?" Meredith asked concerned, Arizona's eyes were red and puffy she had clearly been crying, and she'd limped over.
"I'm good, I'll drop her off later" Arizona promised, Meredith looked like she wanted to push more but Sofia ran in wearing her yellow Belle dress.
"Look Mommy I'm a princess," She declared, Arizona bowed,
"Hello Princess Sofia," she went to her work bag, getting out a tiara, "I have your crown. Let me do your hair"
Meredith left as Arizona plaited Sofia's hair placing the Tiara on top. She'd just finished when Zola came out,
"Princess Zola, I have your Tiara too" Arizona said,
"Can you do an Elsa plait?" Zola asked, Arizona nodded plaiting Zola's hair too it was thicker and a lot harder but Arizona's skilled hands were amazing at plaits.
"Right let's take some photos then go to the zoo" Arizona ordered. She got some snaps on her phone sending them to Meredith and to Callie. One of Sofia and Zola and one of the three of them. Even though she was angry with Callie, she still wanted to share this moment. It was very confusing.
Then it was the short drive to the zoo. It wasn't busy and they got straight in.
"Can we see the tigers first" Sofia asked,
"Then the lions" Zola added,
"We can see everything, we have all day" Arizona reassured them studying the map. "The tigers are that way" Both girls began racing. "No wait" Arizona's shouts were useless as she chased after them.
It was a busy day at the zoo, they had made it to the tigers in time for feeding, then the snow leopards, then too the lions for their feeding time. Next was the hippo and then the giraffes. After a quick face painting session, where Sofia had a tiger print across her face, Zola had a unicorn and at both girls pleading Arizona a blue butterfly. Both girls had then relented and let Arizona see her penguins and sit through the show. They played on the playground Arizona using the time to call the social worker and inform her of what Sofia had said that morning, Penny was now the main suspect.
After was lunch each girl picking chicken nuggets and chips while Arizona settled for a salad. Her leg was throbbing at this point, but she couldn't say no when both girls wanted to see the orangutans. After walking through Asia, Arizona persuaded them to see the bird show, again grateful to be sitting down, she just wished she could take her leg off for a bit, but knew with 2 excited 6-year-olds it wasn't going to happen. She was amazed just how active her daughter was with the fractured ribs coming to the sickening conclusion that they were probably a few weeks old.
"Mommy, please can we see the tigers again?" Sofia asked Arizona nodded, afterwards they had to see the lions again. Finally, the zoo was getting close to closing.
"We need to go to the shop now" Arizona persuaded, both girls nodded running to the soft toy section,
"Auntie A, they have lions!" Zola exclaimed picking up a lion cub that looked a lot like Simba, "He is so soft"
"Pick out something for Ellis and Bailey too" Arizona ordered, she needed to treat her family over the last few days she'd been through hell. "Sofia what do you want, the tiger cub is cute"
"I don't need anything Mommy" her daughter said shyly, remembering what Penny had said about her being a burden.
"I know, but you deserve it baby. You've been so brave yesterday with all the tests, so you deserve a reward" Arizona picked up the tiger cub.
"Can I have the penguin?" Sofia asked,
"Sure baby, but you like tigers better."
"But you like penguins so when I feel sad if I see the penguin I'll think of you, then I won't feel so sad" Sofia said, Arizona felt her heart melt, Sofia was amazing.
"Then I'll get the tiger club, because it reminds me of you, beautiful, brave and fierce. So, when I feel sad, I will hug my little cub and think of you" Arizona said hugging Sofia and the tiger cub. "Zola did you decide?" she asked as the other little girl came over arms full of teddies,
"Uh huh I got Bailey the snake because he likes scary things and Auntie Melia hates snakes, and I got Ellis the sloth because it's really soft and they both sleep a lot"
"Good reasons Zola, okay let's go" Arizona paid for all the soft toys each girl happy. They bounced back to the car. Arizona limping behind. She didn't want to ruin the day, but her leg was getting sore. She was regretting not taking the time to put in on properly this morning. Once you got one blister it was all fire fighting for the rest of the day. Driving to Meredith's to drop Zola off she smiled watching the 2 girls playing in the back. It was good to see Sofia smile.
They pulled up outside, Zola and Sofia jumping out. Arizona followed each step was now agony. Zola had knocked the door, Meredith opened it.
"Mom we went to the zoo" Zola said bouncing into the house, holding her lion. "And we saw lions and tigers and got out faces painted, and Arizona plaited my hair look Mommy" Zola tried to show her mother everything.
"Wow you look very pretty Zola, you too Sofia, I love your unicorn and your tiger and your butterfly" Meredith said her eyes sparkling as she surveyed the small butterfly on the side of Arizona's face. "I think we need a photo before it all gets washed off" She took some photos of the girls in their princess dresses and the faces close up with their face paints.
"We got presents to Mom" Zola showed her the snake and the sloth.
"Bailey and Ellis will love them, thank you Arizona"
"Well Zola picked them" Arizona said modestly.
"You have to stay for dinner to say thank you, Maggie is making pasta, and she always makes loads."
"I can't" Arizona apologised shifting the weight off her prosthetic all she wanted to do was to take it off.
"Please Mommy can we stay" Sofia begged. Arizona was powerless to say no. How could she her daughter was pleading with her, and all she could think was how she had failed her, and how much weight she had lost, here she'd be distracted and would hopefully eat more.
"Okay goose, go get washed up"
"Great come on in I'll get the wine" Meredith dragged Arizona into the lounge, Arizona tried her best not to limp, but Meredith was a surgeon she noticed the little things.
"Is your leg sore, I can grab an ice pack" she offered. Arizona hesitated but decided not to let her pride get in the way.
"That would be great" Arizona said. Meredith went upstairs grabbing a pair of shorts and into the kitchen to get the icepack. Arizona changed in the bathroom then made her way downstairs wishing she had her crutches.
"Here" Meredith handed her the ice pack noticing the chaffing and redness to the stump. "It looks sore." She noted, Arizona winced as the cold ice was applied.
"Yeah, I didn't put it on right this morning, and it started rubbing and once it rubs it's all damage control"
"You should elevate it" Meredith noted, as Maggie called them for dinner, "you stay here I'll bring yours"
Arizona gave her a grateful smile. She checked her phone; the social worker had left a message they were going to serve the warrant to search Callie and Penny's apartment tomorrow. She'd also recommended that Arizona serve Penny with a restraining order for herself and Sofia. It was good advice. Arizona texted her lawyer asking her to file the paperwork, with luck they could both be served together tomorrow.
"Everything okay?" Meredith asked walking in with Maggie. Arizona sighed wishing she could share but not sure Meredith was the person she would share with, she had made it clear she was team Callie.
"Sure" She lied, luckily Zola, Sofia and Bailey came in carefully carrying their bowls of pasta.
"Mom, Zola got me a snake I got's to hide it to scare Auntie Melia," Bailey giggled, holding up the 3ft colourful stuffed teddy. Everyone laughed knowing Amelia wouldn't be scared but would pretend to make the kids laugh.
Arizona finished her pasta,
"We need to go home now" she ordered, Sofia looked sad,
"Can Sofia sleep over, please?" Zola asked her mum and Arizona, Meredith nodded while Arizona shook her head, tomorrow was going to be a horrific day she really needed to sleep. Sofia couldn't sleep here. Meredith had already proven her first loyalty was Callie not Arizona and although it wasn't a competition Arizona needed to hold it together until the warrant was served, until they found the evidence.
"We can't sorry Zola, we have a busy day tomorrow" Arizona apologised,
"No, you should both stay, I don't think you should be on that leg again tonight" Meredith pointed out, "And we all get up early here"
"Please Mommy" Sofia begged. Arizona sighed, she really wanted to let Sofia stay but it would lead to too many questions.
"We can't tonight," Arizona protested, that would involve bath time which would mean Meredith would see Sofia's bruises. Also, she knew it was likely Sofia would have another accident and it would be difficult to clean up here and raise even more questions.
"Arizona what's going on?" Meredith asked bluntly,
"We need to go" Arizona ignored Meredith slipping her leg on, hissing as it hit her sores.
"Arizona" Meredith protested worriedly,
"Meredith I can't, even if I wanted to I can't" Arizona replied picking up Sofia, "Come on Sofia lets go" She didn't give anyone time to process before storming out.
"Mommy" Sofia asked a little scared, any raised voices or sudden movement set her off. Arizona noticed hugging her daughter a little closer to her chest.
"I know you want to stay over, and next week you can, or the week after. I promise" Arizona didn't want to explain to Sofia that nobody could see the bruises, she didn't want her daughter to feel ashamed. "I just want to cuddle you tonight, is that okay?"
"I love mommy cuddles" Sofia grinned forgetting her disappointment. Arizona paused driving home to stop at the store, they went in together buying essentials like ice cream and pull up pants. Arizona kicking herself for not thinking of it earlier, only undressing in Meredith's bathroom had given her the idea seeing the nappies on the side.
Once home the first thing Arizona did was to remove her leg and grab her crutches, feeling the pain ease as soon as it was off. She helped Sofia with her bath and put her into her own bed, before taking her own bath. The warm water helped ease her aching limb next, she applied cream and sat icing it for as long as she dared. Finally, the pain eased to a dull throb, enough she could sleep. Tomorrow was going to be a long day, tomorrow Callie and Penny would have their home searched, Penny would have a restraining order served. Arizona was gearing up towards the fight already exhausted by the thought of fighting with Callie again.
Crawling into bed next to her daughter was worth it, she'd fight anyone as long as Sofia was safe and happy.
Sofia woke up in the middle of the night, kicking and punching, she caught Arizona a few times, she bit her lip as her daughters foot caught her ribs taking her breath away.
"Sorry, I'm sorry" she screamed in her sleep. Arizona fought through the punches to hug her daughter.
"Baby, wake up," she sat up holding her daughter tightly rocking her.
"Mommy," a sleepy Sofia called,
"Hey baby, I'm here"
"It was scary" Sofia revealed burying into her mom, Arizona held her tightly.
"Your safe now goose" Arizona said rocking her, "Do you want to talk about it, sometimes it helps"
"Penny picked me up from Mrs Smith and we walked home. I was playing in my room and got hungry, I went to ask Penny if I could have a snack, she was one the phone, and I interrupted. I didn't mean to, I promise, but she was really mad, and said I was an insufferable Bratt. She got the belt and hit me with it, it really hurt. Then she said if I told anyone I'd be taken away and put in a home,"
"I promise baby, nobody will ever take you away from me again" Arizona said hugging her daughter. "You're never going to end up in a home, if I get hurt you go to Mama and I promise Penny won't be there, if she gets hurt you go Grandpa and Grandma R, if they get hurt you go to Aunt Aria, if she get hurts you go to Grandpa T, if he is hurt you go Auntie Meredith, if she is hurt you have Auntie Bailey, Uncle Owen, Auntie Teddy, Auntie April, Uncle Jackson, they would all love to have you."
"That's a lot of people" Sofia counted,
"And we have your Godmother Cristina Yang, you'd get to live in Switzerland where they make chocolate, and it snows, and they have mountains and make watches." Arizona promised,
"I like Cristina she is funny" Sofia smiled, Arizona grinned, Cristina had been surprisingly good with the young girl and brought her the most amazing presents, the last year she had a customised operation set with more practical surgeries like a Whipple, or a knee replacement. The year before had been a soft teddy heart with the parts clearly labelled if you opened the chambers the valves were clearly labelled.
"Right, we need to change your pull ups and get you back to sleep" Arizona kissed her daughter's hair, Sofia jumped out of bed quickly changing by herself.
"Mommy what if the bad dreams come back?" Sofia asked,
"Bad dream bad dreams go away, good dreams good dreams here to say" Arizona said waving her arms over her daughter.
"You have to do it 3 times or it doesn't work" her daughter whispered cuddling her in the bed Arizona repeated it twice more, watching over Sofia, she was asleep pretty quickly. For Arizona it took longer, she was furious at Penny for hitting her daughter for wanting something to eat. It took a while unwind stroking her daughter's hair. She couldn't sleep, for the rest of the night, waiting until Sofia woke up again mentally listing all she had to do tomorrow as soon as everything opened.
Sofia stirred at just past 6. Arizona was still awake. They had cuddles then went for breakfast Arizona using her crutches to hop down. They had cereal again then watched the lion king on the sofa.
Arizona left Sofia watching the end of lion king making some phone calls. Firstly, to the social worker to her know what Sofia said last night, the next was to her own therapist making an appointment for later than day and getting a recommendation for Sofia. She then called the recommendation a Kelly Thompson and making Sofia an appointment just after her own. She rang Bailey who agreed to watch Sofia while she was at her therapy. Arizona did consider day care but wasn't sure she could trust her daughter with anyone other than herself at the moment. Bailey was a good alternative.
Then it was time to get dressed, Sofia bounced to her room, knowing they were going to the hospital Arizona dressed smart casual with black trousers and a pink top, Sofia wore mini scrubs that Yang had sent for her birthday with a mini scrub cap with cats on it. Arizona grinned seeing it. It was like seeing a mini-Callie. She took a photo sending it to Callie and Cristina knowing that she'd get a kick of seeing her present in use.
"Mommy I'm going to the hospital I'm gonna be a surgeon" Sofia said dancing around the living room,
"Peds like me, ortho like Mama, Plastics like Daddy or cardio like Cristina" Arizona asked slipping her leg on. It felt better than yesterday but Arizona resolved herself to walking less than normal.
"Silly Mommy I'm going to be a Princess surgeon and do everything" Sofia answered still twirling around.
"Of course, my beautiful Princess multiple speciality surgeon."
"Mommy, when can I see Mama?" Sofia asked, Arizona tensed, "I don't know baby, we will know more tonight." She promised, still dreading the conversation to be had with Callie as soon as she was legally allowed to. Then there were her friends and colleagues that would find out and the court case.
"I love Mama,"
"She loves you too" Arizona promised. She checked her watch, "Right bug we better go"
They got in the car driving the short distance to the hospital. Bailey was waiting for them there.
"Auntie Bailey" Sofia jumped out of the car running up to the small Doctor and hugging her.
"Doctor Robbins Sloan Torres nice to see you in uniform" Bailey greeted, hugging her back gently "You're late for the ward round"
"Sorry but Mommy said I had to have breakfast" Sofia apologised, glaring at her mommy for making her late.
"She was right, breakfast is an important meal, we have skills lab, Dr Torres" Bailey instructed aware the young girl had lost weight. Arizona grinned at the interaction, "And you Dr Robbins have an appointment" Bailey ordered.
"Thank you for this" Arizona said as they began walking into the hospital,
"Anything," Bailey replied sincerely, "Anytime anything"
"Thanks, Sofia do you want to go buy some snacks for later?" Arizona handed her $10, Sofia skipped to the vending machine. "They serve the warrant today and the restraining order, they wouldn't tell me what time" she whispered quickly
"Restraining order against Callie?" Bailey replied shocked,
"No, Sofia told me who did it, it was Penny"
"Penny, that good for nothing, first Shepard, now Sofia," she muttered stopping only when Sofia came back.
"Okay, let's go Sofia, I have the skills lab booked" Bailey grinned, "This is going to be fun"
Arizona desperately wanted to go too and watch. Bailey was a great teacher and Sofia was going to love it. Instead, she went to therapy talking for an hour about everything that had happened in the last 3 days, 3 years. Honestly the first 30 minutes was spent crying, trying to even speak. Her first time in private away from her daughter to process her emotions.
The second half was spent trying to process the emotions she was feeling now, anger at herself and Callie for not noticing, hatred to Penny and fear that Sofia was going to be permanently damaged by this. Then there were the emotions she was going to feel tonight, how she would tell Callie about the abuse? How would Callie take it? Would she be as devestated as Arizona felt? Had she had any suspicions?
Exhausted post session Arizona went to the skills lab in a daze. She missed April and Meredith waving at her and walked straight past Webber. They all noticed her red rimmed, swollen eyes and her very slight limp and her dazed expression. Concerned they followed her. Webber had only seen her like this once when Callie had been lying in the ICU and she'd been forced to resuscitate her own daughter. Something big was going on, and they all wanted to know.
