Chapter 10 – Respite
"This definitely looks like a place where a monster would take residence. Why can't they ever hole up in a nice location like a tropical resort or a spa? A casino wouldn't be so bad either…"
Takeshi remarked while observing the dilapidated mansion before him. A few hours ago, he and the rest of the Gremory Peerage had received a mission from the agents of Archduke Agares to eliminate a Stray Devil that had taken residence in one of the towns near Kuoh and had begun preying on the humans living there.
"It's a shame indeed, but what to do?" Rias shrugged. "Work like this isn't meant to be pretty."
"I'm curious about something though." Takeshi said while surveying the area. "Why are Strays always so prone to aggression and murder? We've hunted down two others over the past month and they both behaved like this one. Wouldn't it help them more in the long run if they kept a low profile?"
"Some do, but most of them belong to races that are predisposed to combat and violence." Yuuto explained. "Due to the influence of their newfound Devil physiology, they tend to be ruled by their primal instincts. This results in them turning on their masters and going on killing sprees when escaping to the human world."
"If that's the case, then why reincarnate them in the first place?" Takeshi asked. "Shouldn't those High-class Devils be aware of how easy it is for such creatures to turn on them?"
"They should…but pride often blinds them." Akeno said. "They think themselves talented and strong enough to control such servants, only to be proven wrong at every turn. Hopefully, they'll learn their lesson at some point."
"…Shame that Beelzebub-sama didn't install a self-destruct formula in the Evil Pieces like he intended to at first." Koneko said. "Would have made our jobs much easier."
"True, but it would be disastrous if an enemy managed to somehow trigger the formula in the middle of a fight." Yuuto said. "I'd much rather hunt down the occasional Stray than potentially get blown up by an enemy that's a little too smart for our own good."
"Ditto." Takeshi nodded. "The risks outweigh the benefits. Let's be grateful that the Pieces let out a faint signal and small magic traces we can locate if we're close enough to them."
"Alright, people, let's focus." Rias said, clapping her hands to get everyone's attention. "Our target is definitely in there, so let's not keep them waiting. Now, Takeshi, are you sure you want to engage the Stray alone like you insisted?"
"I am." Takeshi said. "There's something that's been troubling me about Mayhem Striker's Balance Breaker. This is the best chance to test it out since I'm at one hundred percent and it's a real fight."
"Since you feel so strongly about this, I will let you fight on your own." Rias said. "The rest of us will surround the residence and make sure the Stray won't attempt to escape. However, Akeno will be joining you just in case you bite more than you can chew. Also, you're not allowed to be reckless. Is that clear, Takeshi?"
"Crystal clear." Takeshi said, turning to Akeno. "I would say after you, but in this situation, I think it's best if I take point, Akeno-san."
"Ufufu, what a gentleman." Akeno giggled. "Very well, lead the way, Takeshi-kun."
Takeshi and Akeno opened the front door, their senses alert for any sign of a trap. Once they stepped inside the mansion, they were immediately assaulted by the stench of rot and decay.
"Ugh, the only thing worse than a killer is a messy killer." Takeshi remarked while covering his nose. "Looks like our Stray isn't hunting just for sport like the last ones."
"It wouldn't have made any difference either way." Akeno said. "Our task remains the same."
"Right."
Takeshi nodded as he and Akeno pressed on, opening all doors around the long hallway to make sure there weren't any hidden surprises. The smell of decomposed flesh became even more overwhelming once they reached the dining room, a wide area that must have been beautiful once, but had now fallen into a state of utter disrepair. The eerie silence and the rotting body parts strewn across the floor only served to make the place even more haunting.
Takeshi raised his hand all of a sudden, motioning for Akeno to stop moving and take a few steps back. She did as he asked, while Takeshi moved to the center of the room. Summoning Cataclysm Zone and Mayhem Striker, Takeshi spoke.
"I know you're there, Stray. Stop skulking in the shadows and show yourself."
There was no response to this. The only sound that could be heard was the two youths' breathing.
"If you're trying to stall for time, it's meaningless." Takeshi said. "My fellow Devils have surrounded this house and cut off all escape routes. Surrender, and the punishment will be more lenient."
"As if I'd trust the word of a rotten Devil!"
Takeshi jumped to the side, barely evading a thrust that opened a hole on the floor. Turning his gaze to the direction of the attack, Takeshi observed his assailant. She was a young woman with short white hair, grey eyes and a voluptuous figure not covered by a single article of clothing that held two lances in her hands. However, all sense of normalcy stopped there. Her lower half was that of a large lion with black mane and a snake for a tail.
"Stray Devil Viser, I assume?" Takeshi said as he brandished his axe. "I've never fought a chimera before. This should be an interesting experience."
"It will be your last experience, you cocky Devil brat!" Viser yelled as she charged. "I will eat you whole and leave nothing behind!"
"The likes of you cannot kill me." Takeshi declared while evading Viser's thrusts. "You are the one who will be eradicated without fail! Transf—I mean, Balance Break!"
[Malice Rise! Abyss Rage Awakening!]
Takeshi winced as several metal protrusions erupted from his body, opening up and clamping themselves around his body to form the armor of his Balance Breaker, Dead Shore Advent. Grabbing Viser's lance, Takeshi channeled his miasma, eroding and shattering it. Viser thrust her second lance, but Takeshi broke it with an axe kick. Before the Stray could fix her posture, Takeshi kicked her in the face, sending her crashing through the wall and into a hallway.
"Impossible…" Viser heaved, blood dripping from her mouth. "I'm a Rook, yet a single kick did this to me… And this form… Who are you!?"
"You don't need to know that." Takeshi said. "It's time to be punished for all the innocents you preyed upon."
Viser snarled as her snake tail opened its mouth, shooting out a small stream of acid. However, Takeshi was faster, shooting a large fireball from his hand that burned the incoming acid and struck Viser, engulfing her body in flames. The Stray howled in pain, thrashing around in a vain attempt to extinguish the flames consuming her flesh.
"Victory was never an option for you."
Takeshi said as a large number of ash blades formed around Viser, skewering her body all over. The Stray Devil let out an almost inaudible croak and fell dead to the ground. Takeshi snapped his fingers, with the flames burning Viser's body intensifying and incinerating her corpse, leaving only a pile of ashes behind.
"A job well done, Takeshi-kun." Akeno praised her fellow Devil. "I see you've also got the hang of using your demonic power in combat."
"More or less." Takeshi said, dismissing the armor and groaning at the sight of his ruined clothes, which were riddled with holes. "Not again… This is the fifth outfit I've ruined this month. Can't this Balance Breaker manifest in a manner that doesn't make a mess out of my wardrobe?"
"Ara, ara, that's quite a problem indeed." Akeno said, and then a sultry smile appeared on her face. "At least it's a good thing that Takeshi-kun's body is easy on the eyes, ufufu. The results of your daily training are really showing."
"I'll…take your word for it."
Takeshi said, a faint blush on his cheeks. Just like Akeno had said, thanks to his training, all the excess fat on him had vanished and he had started putting on muscle. Still, he wasn't sure he felt comfortable by Akeno's almost predatory gaze on him. Or at least the cautious part of him wasn't. The more adventurous part urged him to take advantage of this situation somehow.
However, such thoughts were banished from his mind as he felt a wave of dizziness assaulting him. Stumbling a bit, he leaned on the nearby wall for support.
"What's the matter, Takeshi-kun?" Akeno said, rushing to his side with a concerned expression on her face. "Did something happen?"
"It's nothing…is what I want to say, but I suspect that's not the case." Takeshi said, straightening himself. "I'm alright now. Let's go back to the others. We shouldn't keep President waiting."
Takeshi said as he left the dinning room behind, with Akeno following after him. Upon exiting the dilapidated mansion, the two of them were joined by the remaining members of the Peerage.
"We sensed a brief clashing of auras, followed by one being extinguished." Rias said. "I assume that means the Stray Devil is dead?"
"She won't be troubling anyone ever again." Takeshi said. "Not to mention, I accomplished my objective, so that's killing two birds with one stone."
"Since that's over with, mind sharing with the rest of us just why you were so adamant on fight the Stray Devil on your own?" Rias said. "Was there some special reason?"
"Well…I noticed an issue with my Balance Breaker while using over the past month." Takeshi said. "Every time I equipped it during training, I would feel exhausted afterwards. At first, I dismissed it as something normal. I mean, keeping it up for forty minutes until it deactivated itself should be pretty taxing, right?"
"That's only to be expected, but there's probably more to that story, right?"
"Yes." Takeshi responded to Rias. "Remember the previous Stray Devil subjugation? When Kiba-kun and I were trapped in that Jorogumo's web and I activated my Balance Breaker to free us and kill that Stray?"
"What about it?"
"Even though I didn't equip Dead Shore Advent for that long, I still felt drained for a brief amount of time." Takeshi said. "Same thing happened today as well. I'm afraid…that using my Balance Breaker is trimming my lifespan the same way using Mayhem Striker's regeneration ability does."
"Are you sure about that?" Rias frowned. "There's no chance you're mistaken?"
"I know my own body best, and I can tell this is abnormal." Takeshi insisted. "I tried to question Nidhogg about that, but he's been giving me the silent treatment. My guess is that, while the Balance Breaker gives me the power to generate miasma and scales up my abilities, like increased strength and speed, faster regeneration and being able to summon a greater quantity of ash, it also scales up the demerits of Mayhem Striker."
"You mean, instead of sapping your life as fuel only when regenerating your injuries, it does so constantly in Balance Breaker?"
"Precisely." Takeshi nodded at Yuuto's words. "However, even if my hypothesis is correct, I doubt Nidhogg will confirm it unless I'm on the verge of death. He'll probably show up then to gloat."
"Whatever the case, it's best that you restrict the use of your Balance Breaker for now." Rias said. "Until we look into this more, you are to use it only when it's absolutely necessary."
"You won't find me arguing there." Takeshi said. "Devils might live for more than ten thousand years, but I'm not taking any chances. But enough about that. More importantly, spring vacation is almost over and the next school year will begin in just a few days."
"Takeshi-kun and I will become second-year students, Koneko-chan will become a first-year student, while President and Akeno-san will become third-year students." Yuuto remarked. "Time flies."
"Ufufu, it sure does." Akeno remarked with a smile. "Those two years passed in the blink of an eye. Before you know it, Rias and I will be graduating from high school and heading to university."
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves." Rias said. "We still have a whole year before that. For now, we should aim to make as many wonderful memories as we can during that time."
"…I hope the coming year will be a little more peaceful." Koneko said. "I barely had time to study for finals."
"Hear, hear!" Takeshi said. "It was a real pain maintaining that ninety percent average. Though I still fell behind the Student President in the end. Seriously, how the Hell did she score almost perfect in all her subjects? Is she cheating? Yes, she must have used her Devil powers to cheat!"
"Now, now, don't be a sore loser, Takeshi." Rias grinned. "Sona is just that intelligent. If it makes you feel any better, I've also never beaten her in anything that requires brain power."
"It doesn't, but thanks for trying, President."
"Speaking of which, tomorrow is April second, right?" Akeno said, glancing at Rias for a moment. "That's perfect. My morning is free, so I'd like Takeshi-kun to accompany me."
"Accompany you?" Takeshi said. "What for, Akeno-san?"
"I want to visit the new clothes store that opened in Kuoh's shopping mall, and I'd like someone's opinion." Akeno said. "Seeing as your Balance Breaker has ruined several of your clothes, this should also be a good chance for you to purchase some new ones. At the very least, you can see if you like anything and come back another time."
"Well, it's not like I have anything planned for tomorrow…" Takeshi said while rubbing his chin. "Very well. Should we meet in the town square at, let's say, eight o'clock?"
"Sounds great." Akeno smiled. "I'll be looking forward to tomorrow then, ufufu."
Out of the corner of his eye, Takeshi caught Rias, Yuuto and Koneko giving what appeared to be discreet thumbs-up at each other. However, this occurred so fast that he wasn't sure if that was the case.
"Alright, everyone, it's time to call it a night." Rias said, clapping her hands. "I have a feeling it's going to be a busy day tomorrow."
Takeshi didn't get the chance to question this statement as a large teleportation magic circle appeared underneath the group, transporting them away from the area.
The next day…
"Damn it! The one day I shouldn't oversleep, my alarm clock's battery died! This is the worst!"
Takeshi cried out while running through the streets of Kuoh, doing his best to avoid bumping on the large number of pedestrians around him or reveal his superhuman strength by going overboard. The last thing he needed right now was having to modify half the town's memories should he overdo it by accident.
"Next time, I'll be setting both my normal alarm clock and my cellphone's alarm clock!" Takeshi remarked, jumping over a child and ignoring his mother's angry remarks from behind him. "I hope I won't be running too late! Tch, I knew I should have taken the motorcycle!"
After running for several minutes, Takeshi arrived at Kuoh's town square, an open circular area filled with a large number of trees and benches, and surrounded by several stores. A large statue of Nomura Morihide, a past governor of Saitama, was situated there. Next to it, Akeno could be seen standing, clad in her casual clothes, which consisted of a long black skirt and a tight-fitting white shirt. She was also carrying a beige handbag.
"Akeno-san!" Takeshi called out to her. "I'm so sorry I'm late!"
"You finally came…" Akeno clasped her hands, a sad puppy-like expression on her face. "I was afraid you stood me up and had gone frolicking with some other girl. My poor heart was about to give out from the sadness of being abandoned."
"Spare me the theatrics, Akeno-san." Takeshi said in an exasperated manner. "It's true that I was late, but it's only twenty past eight. There's no way you thought I had abandoned you or anything like that."
"Aw, I was found out." A playful smile appeared on Akeno's face. "This is the point where you should be apologizing profusely with a flustered expression. You're no fun, Takeshi-kun."
"I am sorry that I kept you waiting, but a mere twenty-minute delay isn't enough reason for me to get me flustered." Takeshi said. "You'll have to try a bit harder, Akeno-san."
"Hmm, should I take this as a challenge?" Akeno said, a glint appearing in her eyes. "In any case, we really should get moving before it gets too crowded."
"After you, Akeno-san."
Takeshi and Akeno started walking side by side, heading towards Kuoh's shopping mall. Takeshi also made sure to be mindful of his surroundings as well in case he ran into students of Kuoh Academy. While he had gone through several near-death situations so far, provoking the wrath of the entire male student body was still something he would rather avoid.
"Ara, ara, there's no need to be so tense, Takeshi-kun." Akeno said. "I'm using a little bit of my demonic power to divert attention from everyone around us so that we won't be bothered. Even if we do run into students from Kuoh, they won't be able to take notice of our features. We could even start kissing passionately in the middle of the street and no-one would be the wiser regarding our identities, ufufu~."
"That's…good to hear." Takeshi said, struggling to keep the vivid mental image out of his brain and the blush from his face. "Speaking of demonic power, there's something I was curious about, Akeno-san."
"Oh?" Akeno said. "Ask away then, and I'll be happy to answer if I can."
"Utilizing and shaping demonic power requires one to have a minimum amount of it along with a good imagination, right?" Takeshi said. "Despite that, I haven't been able to copy President's Power of Destruction. I've also tried converting metal to gold, but that didn't work either. Why is that?"
"You're an ambitious one, aren't you, Takeshi-kun?" Akeno said with a smile. "What you need to understand is that demonic power isn't almighty. When it comes to the clan traits of each Pillar family, us common Devils are unable to replicate them because we lack the unique factors present within the noble Devils' bodies. It's those factors that shape and transform demonic power into each Pillar trait."
"So, they basically have some sort of mutation in their DNA that affects their demonic power in a manner we common Devils cannot understand. Therefore, we cannot replicate them."
"Exactly." Akeno said. "As for your second question, transmuting common metals to rare ones would take a large amount of demonic power and an intimate understanding of the properties of both metals. It's not something as simple as wishing for it. Even experienced Magicians that specialize in alchemy have trouble with such conversions."
"Well, there goes my dream of making it big with little effort…" Takeshi sighed. "Since we're on the subject of demonic power though, there's something else I've been curious about. Those magic circles we're using, where are they coming from? From what I've understood, magic and demonic power work differently despite the former originating from the latter, and no-one really showed me how to use these magic circles. I just…knew how to."
"The answer is this." Akeno pointed at her chest. "The Evil Pieces within us have several basic magic circles encoded in them that aid us in focusing our demonic power and performing rudimentary tasks. For noble Devils who don't possess Evil Pieces, a ceremony is performed shortly after their birth where they brand them with a seal that contains the same magic circles."
"Why?" Takeshi asked. "I mean, not that I don't appreciate having to skip the basic steps, but why go to all that trouble?"
"It's to maximize the effectiveness of demonic power while minimizing the consequences of using it." Akeno said. "In the old days, Devils would direct demonic power with their thoughts alone, using incredibly simplified magic circles as rudimentary aid. However, there was danger in this."
"Let me guess." Takeshi said. "Stray thoughts could influence demonic power negatively, causing it to misfire or accidentally hit something else other than the intended target?"
"That's right." Akeno said. "In order to fix this issue, Devils began utilizing more complex magic circles derived from human magic to better direct and control demonic power once said magic became mainstream. While there is some loss of power since a portion of demonic power is used to fuel the circles' construction, it was considered worth the cost."
"Interesting." Takeshi remarked. "The more I learn about the state of the world, the more I realize how little I know."
"That's to be expected." Akeno said. "However, there is no rush. You can take your time and slowly learn about everything you need."
"It would be nice if that was the case…" Takeshi muttered. "Oh, looks like we have arrived."
Before the two youths stood a large two-storey building, with a large number of people entering and exiting from it.
"Over here, Takeshi-kun." Akeno said while leading Takeshi to the shopping mall's second floor. "The new store should be right around…here."
The two youths stepped inside the store, with Akeno looking around for a bit before turning to Takeshi.
"I think it would be best if Takeshi-kun tried out some clothes first." Akeno said. "What do you say?"
"I don't have a problem…though I could use some help." Takeshi rubbed his neck with an uncomfortable expression on his face. "I'm…not really that good when it comes to shopping for clothes. I can't for the life of me figure out what matches well with what."
"Ara, there's no need to worry." Akeno said with a sly smirk. "Your Senpai here will do her utmost to help you. No matter how many hours we'll have to spend in here, I'll definitely find the best outfit for you."
"Wait, hours!?" Takeshi spoke with an alarmed expression. "That's hardly—"
"Ah, ah, ah." Akeno placed her finger on Takeshi's lips. "Indulge me here, Takeshi-kun. It's not often I get the chance to shop for a gentleman's clothes. Yuuto-kun is very reluctant to go out shopping with me for some reason."
"I can't imagine why…"
Takeshi grumbled, but followed after Akeno, who was heading towards the men's section. It was true that he would need new clothes sooner rather than later, and figured it couldn't be so bad. He immediately revised his opinion five minutes afterwards when Akeno gathered a pile of clothes almost as tall as her and had Takeshi try them out on after another in rapid succession.
"I'm beat…"
Takeshi let out an exhausted sigh once Akeno released him after almost two hours of playing dress-up doll for her, collapsing on a nearby chair while holding a bag with his purchases. He never would have guessed that his playful Senpai would be so enthusiastic about fashion. A short distance away, Akeno was talking to one of the employees, speaking in a hushed manner and handing several clothes to her. Once she was done, she returned to Takeshi's side.
"What's the matter, Takeshi-kun?" Akeno tilted her head to the side. "You look very tired for some reason."
"Gee, I wonder why." Takeshi said with a sarcastic expression. "Still, thank you for helping me out, Akeno-san. I got some good suggestions from you."
"Shame that you only bought one pair of trousers and a shirt though." Akeno said. "That dark blue jacket towards the end looked really good on you. There was also that dark brown sweater and that green long-sleeved top, as well as—"
"Yes, your choices were all really nice, but this store is a little too expensive for my tastes." Takeshi said, cutting off Akeno. "I couldn't possibly buy all these clothes. I'll wait a bit until I've gathered some more money before coming back here."
"I understand." Akeno said. "I hope you're not too bored just yet though. There's still me, and I'd like to hear your opinion on my choices."
"Sure, though I'm not really sure if I'll be of any help." Takeshi said. "My non-existent fashion sense aside, you're a beautiful girl, Akeno-san. You'd look drop dead gorgeous even if you wore rags."
"Ara, ara, I can't say I'm immune to such flattery." Akeno said with a pleased expression on her face. "You're a natural at this, aren't you, Takeshi-kun?"
"Again, calling it how I see it." Takeshi said. "Though one would have to be blind to not acknowledge how attractive and radiant Akeno-san is."
"You're really trying to make me blush, aren't you?" Akeno said, her smile growing wider. "Such a naughty man, ufufu~. But that honesty of yours is something I value very much. Now, let's go."
Akeno brought Takeshi to the women's section, where he spent more than an hour watching her trying out a variety of clothes. Despite his own nightmarish experience, a beautiful girl performing a one-woman fashion show for him was definitely worth the earlier trouble in his book.
"So, what's the verdict?" Akeno asked. "Which one do you think was best?"
"I'd probably go with this." Takeshi said, pointing at a light purple one-piece with a cute frill on it. "It really brings out your appeal and makes you look even more beautiful, something which I didn't think was possible."
"Ufufu, since it comes with such a high evaluation, there's no way I'm not buying it." Akeno said with a happy expression. "But I think I should take this one as well…"
Once Akeno had paid for her purchases, the two youths exited the clothes shop and headed for the stairs.
"It's still early." Takeshi said after glancing at the large clock placed in the middle of the atrium. "There's a café on the first floor, so how about we go there and grab a drink?"
"Before that, there's one more place I'd like to go to." Akeno said, a mischievous smile on her face. "Follow me."
Takeshi did so, only to be shocked when Akeno brought him to a specific store on the first floor.
"Erm, Akeno-san…?" Takeshi spoke in a reluctant manner. "Why exactly are we in front of a lingerie shop?"
"Ara, ara, there's only one reason for that, no?" Akeno smirked. "My current underwear is starting to become a little too tight, so I figured it's about time to try on a bigger size."
"Oh…" Takeshi said, feeling a little embarrassed. "In that case, I'll wait for you outside until—"
"Oh my, what are you saying, Takeshi-kun?" Akeno said. "Your opinion is crucial, so you'll be accompanying me inside."
"Oi, what are you saying, Akeno-san!?" Takeshi shouted with a flustered expression. "Me going into a lingerie shop is just—"
"Now, now, there's no need to be so embarrassed." Akeno said, a sly smile on her face. "I guarantee you'll have a good time, ufufu~."
Before Takeshi had the chance to protest further, Akeno had dragged him inside the shop. While part of him was exasperated with his Senpai's antics, another was somewhat looking forward to this. After looking around for a few minutes, Akeno picked three pieces and brought them to Takeshi.
"What do you think, Takeshi-kun?" Akeno asked, lifting them up. "Which one would suit me better?"
One was a red-colored set with a black lace pattern sewn on it, the other was a pale blue set that gave off a refreshing feeling, while the last one was a daring black set made out of material that was almost transparent in places. Glancing at the last one for a second, Takeshi quickly averted his gaze and pointed at the blue set.
"That…that one would look best, I think…"
"Is that so?" Akeno said. "In that case, I'll try it out first."
Akeno said, taking all three sets and stepping inside the changing room. One of the employees, who had been nearby, turned to Takeshi with a playful smile on her face despite the slight fear in her gaze.
"Shopping for your girlfriend, eh? Lucky you. She's quite the beauty."
"She's…very beautiful indeed."
Takeshi was going to deny the woman's statement, but figured it might be more trouble than it was worth. Chances were, she wouldn't believe him in any case. Girls wouldn't usually bring friends of the opposite gender with them to shop for underwear after all.
At the moment, Takeshi caught sight of the Perverted Trio passing outside the store. He flinched for a bit, but then remembered that Akeno's spell was still concealing them. However, at that moment, Issei's eyes opened wide upon catching sight of Takeshi, prompting the latter to crouch in reflex.
"What the…? I thought other people couldn't perceive our characteristics. Hey, Akeno-san?"
"What is it?"
"That spell you cast, it's still working, right?" Takeshi asked. "Because Hyoudou and his buddies are outside, and I could swear he noticed me."
"Oops~." Akeno spoke with a playful tone. "I forgot to recast the spell after its duration ran out."
"Are you kidding me!?" Takeshi hissed in a furious manner. "That's just great… The last thing I need is the Perverted Trio spreading rumors. You finish your shopping, Akeno-san. I'll try and sneak out from—"
"There's no need for that."
Before Takeshi could react, Akeno grabbed him and dragged him inside the changing room, pressing her body against his. He felt his face heating up from the feeling of Akeno's soft and curvaceous body, as well as the fact that she was only wearing the risqué black underwear, leaving her in a near-naked state.
"A-Akeno-san!?" Takeshi spoke with a high-pitched voice. "This is…!"
"Shhhh." Akeno brought her finger to her mouth. "Don't be so loud, or we'll get caught. That would be bad, no?"
"Akeno-san…are you perhaps enjoying this situation…?"
Takeshi said through gritted teeth, struggling and failing to control his arousal. The sight of the near-naked Akeno was simply too stimulating, almost as stimulating as Rias lying naked in his bed.
"I can't say I'm not." Akeno said, licking her lips. "Being seen in such a state by a young man while also risking getting caught in this compromising position…it does feel me with excitement, ufufu~."
"I can't say I'm particularly enjoying myself though…"
"You say that, yet you can't take your eyes off me." Akeno pointed out with a wide smile. "Those were the underwear you wanted to see me in, right? I noticed that you glanced at this set first. Also, I can tell you're excited judging from what's poking at me."
"Nothing gets past you, huh…?" Takeshi whispered, trying to control himself and listen to the conversation of the Perverted Trio, who seemed to be debating whether they had seen Takeshi or not, outside the changing room. "I'd like to meet the cold-blooded guy with nerves of steel who wouldn't be feeling anything in this situation. Though…I can't say I understand why you're playing with me."
"I just can't help it, Takeshi-kun." Akeno whispered next to his ear, sending shivers down his spine. "You're so ferocious and dauntless on the battlefield, yet your flustered expression when I tease you is so precious. It awakens the bully in me and makes want to do all sorts of things to you. At the same time…I wonder how it would feel to be dominated by you. Just imagining it makes me tremble, ufufu~."
Akeno started nibbling at Takeshi's ear while caressing his leg with hers.
"Not to mention, you've shown me that you're someone reliable, unlike most men I've met." Akeno continued, drawing even closer. "I wonder if that's the cause of the fluttering in my heart…"
Shit! Takeshi shouted inside his head. She's really turning me on! Should I do it!? Should I make a move as well!? But if she's just playing or testing me or something, this could blow in my face big time! What do I do here!?
His hands twitched as he wrestled with indecision. But at that moment, the Perverted Trio's conversation became a bit louder.
"See, I knew you were seeing things, Issei." Matsuda said. "Ryuugamine isn't here."
"That's what it looks like…" Issei said in a reluctant manner. "But I could have sworn it was him."
"In any case, since he's not here, we should leave." Motohama said. "While I'm enjoying this Shangri-La, the stares of the customers and clerks are starting to become unbearable."
"Just you wait." Issei said through gritted teeth. "One day, we'll have girlfriends of our own, and then we'll be able to stroll in here with our heads held high."
"But for now, a tactical retreat."
After Matsuda said so, the three youths took their leave. Inside the changing room, Akeno separated herself from Takeshi.
"Ara, ara, it seems our fun time is over…for now." Akeno said with a suggestive smile. "Look forward to the continuation in the future though."
"I…I will…"
Takeshi said in a somewhat dazed manner while blushing furiously, exiting the changing room after making sure no-one was around. After a couple of minutes, Akeno stepped out as well and went to the counter. Once she had paid for her purchases, the two youths left the lingerie shop. Although Akeno was humming something with a pleased expression on her face, Takeshi was still feeling flustered and bewildered from the erotic experience. Because of that, he failed to notice that Akeno's cellphone was ringing.
"Yuuto-kun…" Akeno whispered after picking up. "Yes, it's going well so far… Yes, I know it's your turn… It can't be helped although I've been enjoying myself… We all want to help after all… Alright, I'll leave it to you and join the others…"
Once she finished her call, Akeno turned to Takeshi.
"I just received a call from Yuuto-kun." Akeno said. "He is sorry to bother us, but he asked if you could help him with a contract. He said the request is right up your alley apparently. He's waiting for you in the park."
"Kiba-kun?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow, having composed himself. "I would be glad to help, but it doesn't feel right leaving you here on your own, Akeno-san."
"Don't mind me." Akeno said as she brought out a sketchpad from her bag. "I got some good ideas from the clothing store we visited, so this is a good opportunity to draw some rough first sketches."
"Oh?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow upon seeing the contents of the sketchbook, which was filled with several designs. "You're into designing clothes, Akeno-san?"
"It's been one of my passions ever since I was a child." Akeno admitted. "I'm still an amateur, but I'm making progress slowly."
"That's good to hear." Takeshi said. "In that case, I'll be looking forward to the time where I can wear clothes designed by Akeno-san."
"When that time comes, you'll be my first customer." Akeno smiled. "Or maybe the second since I've already made a promise with Rias. Now, go. You shouldn't keep Yuuto-kun waiting. Also, thanks for spending time with me today. I can say with confidence that I enjoyed myself."
"I also had fun…all things considered." Takeshi said. "I'll see you tomorrow then, Akeno-san."
"Yes…or maybe even sooner than that…"
Akeno muttered, smiling as she waved at the auburn-haired youth. After bidding goodbye to his Senpai, Takeshi started making his way to the park. While he was curious about Yuuto's request, he was confident it wouldn't turn into anything extreme like just now with Akeno…probably.
Great, and now I'm regretting not doing anything more. Takeshi thought. I shouldn't have hesitated. But things like that aren't really my forte…
Distracted by his musings, Takeshi almost didn't notice that he had arrived at the park. Yuuto was standing at the park's entrance, flanked by two youths that seemed to be at about the same age as him. One was tall and well-built with short dark brown hair and green eyes, while the other was a bespectacled young man with light blue hair and grey eyes that was a little shorter than his companion.
"Ah, Takeshi-kun, over here!" Yuuto waved at Takeshi upon catching sight of him. "Thanks for coming here on such short notice."
"No problem, Kiba-kun." Takeshi said, gesturing at the two boys next to him. "These two are…?"
"These are my newest clients." Yuuto said. "The tall one is Ogawa Kazuhiko, and the one with the glasses is Yamaguchi Hitoshi. You two, this is my fellow Devil, Ryuugamine Takeshi."
"A pleasure to meet you, Devil-san."
"Same here."
Both youths bowed to him. Takeshi didn't miss the unmistakable signs of wariness in their expressions, but didn't comment on it. More of the usual.
"So, how exactly can I help you, Kiba-kun?" Takeshi asked. "Akeno-san didn't give me any details."
"Ogawa-san and Yamaguchi-san are both members of their high school's basketball team." Yuuto began explaining. "However, they still don't feel confident in their abilities and would like to practice some more in order to avoid dragging their team down. Since they didn't want to trouble their teammates, they summoned me instead. But since I'm not that experienced in sports and Koneko-chan told me once you like basketball, I figured you could help me."
"Basketball, eh?" Takeshi said, a wide smile on his face. "You came to the right person then. It's been some time since I last played in a team, but I should be able to help."
"I knew I could count on you." Yuuto said. "Let's get started then."
The four youths headed towards the nearby basketball court, which was empty at the time.
"OK, I think we should do this in pairs, one Devil, one human." Takeshi said while dribbling. "Yamaguchi-san and me versus Kiba-kun and Ogawa-san. Of course, us Devils will limit our strength to normal human standards as much as possible. Any objections?"
"None."
"I'm fine with this."
"Let's do it."
"Alright." Takeshi pulled out a coin from his pocket. "Let's decide who will start the offense. Heads or tails, Kiba-kun?"
"Heads."
Takeshi flipped the coin, which landed on tails.
"Too bad, but it looks like we'll be the attackers." Takeshi smirked as everyone took their positions. "Ready?"
"Any time."
"Then, here we go!"
Takeshi started moving towards the basket, using a crossover dribble. Yuuto tried to cut him off, but despite his speed, Takeshi shuffled past him. Kazuhiko moved to intercept, but Takeshi jumped and performed a hook shot. The ball drew a tight arc, landing inside the basket.
"Two points for us." Takeshi made a V-sign while grinning. "Looks like the advantage is ours."
"For now." Yuuto smiled. "But the game has just begun!"
The four youths resumed their game, which dragged on for almost two hours, with a twenty-minute break in between. By the end of it, the two humans were lying on the ground panting, looking as if their souls were about to leave their bodies.
"Devils are…a bit too extreme…" Kazuhiko said while heaving. "But this…was definitely good practice…"
"Agreed…" Hitoshi wheezed out. "I even learned…a couple of new tricks… Still…would it kill you…to pass the ball a bit more often…Ryuugamine-kun…?"
"Ah, don't sweat the small stuff." Takeshi waved his hand in a dismissive manner. "What matters is that we won by a landslide. Better luck next time, Yuuto."
"I thought this wasn't a competition…" Yuuto said with a bitter smile, but then his eyes widened. "Wait, you're using my first name?"
"Is it weird?" Takeshi said. "I thought it was about time honestly. We've been comrades for more than two months, so being a little more familiar shouldn't be a problem."
"You have a point there." Yuuto said with a smile before turning to his clients. "I think that should be enough for today, you two. Same time tomorrow?"
"Yeah."
"Sounds good."
After the two youths had taken their leave, Yuuto turned to Takeshi.
"I don't know about you, but I'm famished." Yuuto said. "There's a restaurant not far from here that was recommended to me by a client. What do you say we go and grab a bite? It'll be my treat."
"Well, my parents did say they're going to be out for the day, and there aren't any leftovers in the fridge…" Takeshi muttered. "Alright then, let's go."
The two Devils left the park behind them and headed towards the town's outskirts. After a few minutes, they arrived in front of a small restaurant with a homely feel to it. Once they sat down, looked through the menu and gave their orders to the waiter, Yuuto turned to Takeshi.
"Once again, thank you for helping me there, Takeshi-kun." Yuuto said. "Like I said before, because of my upbringing, I don't have much experience in normal teenager stuff."
"Speaking of which, you never really told me where you came from or what your life was before you were a Devil." Takeshi said. "But if it's a difficult subject…"
"It is…but I can tell you this much at least." Yuuto said with a serious expression. "I was an orphan that was raised in one of the Catholic Church's facilities."
"The Church?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow. "Now I'm really curious to know how you ended up in a Devil's Peerage of all places. But I guess it's not a pleasant story."
"It's not, and I don't want to darken the mood." Yuuto said. "At some point, I'll tell you the whole story, just…just not now. I don't want to recall these painful memories…"
"You don't have to force yourself." Takeshi said. "But maybe you can help me with something else."
"Oh? If it's something within my power, I'd be glad to help."
"You've been a part of this Peerage for some time, right?" Takeshi said. "If so, maybe you can help me decipher Akeno-san's behavior. You see, today, she…"
Takeshi spent the next minutes recounting his erotic experience with Akeno.
"So, what do you think, Yuuto?" Takeshi asked. "Was she seriously coming on to me, or was she fooling around just for fun? Or was she perhaps testing me?"
"…Hard to say." Yuuto said as the waiter brought them their orders. "I can tell you with certainty that Akeno-san hasn't done anything like that to me, and, as far as I know, she hasn't approached any other guy in such a manner before."
"So…?"
"Unfortunately, I can't help you here seeing as I have zero experience when it comes to the fairer sex." Yuuto shrugged. "More importantly, however, what about your feelings? Do you like Akeno-san?"
"I'm…not sure." Takeshi said. "She's beautiful, kind, charming and elegant, and despite her sadistic tendencies, she's very caring. While I don't know much more about her, I think I'd like to go out with her at some point. But since I'm the dangerous Evil Dragon User…should I really be involved with a girl in such an intimate manner?"
"That's something you're going to have to work out with her if you end up going down that path." Yuuto said. "Or with any other girl for that matter. For now, I suggest you take it slow, keep probing her and keep your eyes open for any more signs from her part."
"I guess that's all I can do for now…"
"I'm surprised though." Yuuto said. "Out of all the girls in the Peerage, I figured Koneko-chan would be the first to approach you in that manner. She seems quite fond of you after all."
"Koneko-chan?" Takeshi said with a doubtful expression. "Really? I mean, sure, we hang out a lot together, but I don't think she feels like that for me…probably? Not that I would mind if she did. Far from it."
"Maybe I'm mistaken." Yuuto said. "However, you're in luck if both of them have feelings for you. Dating two lovely girls is a privilege. Perhaps this can be the start of your own harem."
"Harem?" Takeshi frowned. "I don't know… It sounds tempting and is the norm in Devil society, but can I really handle something like that?"
"It's a challenge, that's for sure." Yuuto smiled. "However, you love being challenged and overcoming said challenges, don't you?"
"I can't deny that." Takeshi laughed. "But making several girls happy is something I cannot rush into halfheartedly. I need to gather my resolve and ascertain whether this is a path I truly want to follow."
"I'm afraid I can't help you with that." Yuuto said. "Like I said before, zero experience when it comes to the opposite gender."
"That's something I still find hard to believe." Takeshi said, pointing at Yuuto with his fork. "You've been attending high school for almost a year now, the majority of the female student body is lusting after you, and I'm supposed to believe you haven't gone out on a single date yet?"
"It's the truth though." Yuuto said. "A relationship between me and a human girl is impossible considering the worlds we live in. That's why, it doesn't feel right for me to go out with them when I already know it's not going to work out in the long run."
"Who says it has to be for the long run?" Takeshi said. "I mean, even humans tend to have a lot of short-lived relationships before settling down with someone. Going out with a couple of girls to test the waters and get some experience in the whole affair shouldn't be a problem, and could even prove beneficial later on."
"It would still be dishonest to date someone while keeping my true nature hidden." Yuuto countered. "I'd be feeling guilty the whole time, and it wouldn't be fair to my partner."
"I see that you're a Knight through and through." Takeshi chuckled. "What about the girls from the supernatural side then?"
"The girls from the Occult Research Club are like family to me, so they're out." Yuuto said. "As for the Sitri girls, I don't know them that well to consider them as possible romantic partners. But even if I was interested in some girl…I probably wouldn't pursue her."
"Hoh? Why is that?"
"There are some…unresolved issues regarding my past that I have to take care of first." Yuuto said, his expression hardening a bit. "Until I do, I cannot allow myself to indulge in something like pursuing a romantic relationship."
"That's a damn waste of your good looks." Takeshi said, letting out an exasperated life. "Since we're on the subject of women, has there ever been a time when a female client made a move on you? Or maybe asked for a lewd request?"
"Well…something like that has happened once or twice in the past." Yuuto said with an embarrassed expression. "However, I turned them down on the spot. Not only was it inappropriate, but those kinds of requests are only fulfilled by Devils that specialize in that sort of thing, not by us. My female clients are usually older ladies that have me cook for them or talk to me about their problems at work."
"Lucky you." Takeshi grumbled. "Most of my clients lately are guys, and not of the reputable kind. Pretty sure some of them are Yakuza members. I'm worried that I'll receive a corpse disposal request one of these days…"
"That sounds difficult…"
The rest of the lunch passed with Takeshi and Yuuto making small talk. Once they were finished eating, Yuuto paid the bill despite Takeshi insisting to split it in the middle.
"That hit the spot…" Takeshi rubbed his belly with a satisfied expression as the two boys exited the restaurant. "Thanks for the invitation, Yuuto. Next time, it will be my treat though."
"Don't sweat it." Yuuto said. "It was nice hanging out as friends instead of interacting only when training or working, Takeshi-kun. With President and Student President's Peerages being comprised mainly of girls, I've missed having a fellow guy I can talk to like this."
"Don't mention it." Takeshi said. "I'm on the same boat."
At that moment, Yuuto's phone rang once, with Takeshi's phone doing the same. Both youths pulled out their phones and checked their messages.
"I've got a message from President." Yuuto said. "She says she wants me to go back to the Occult Research Club and check something. Sorry for leaving you here, Takeshi-kun."
"No, it's alright." Takeshi said. "I just received a message from Koneko-chan. She says she wants me to meet her in the swamp located in the outskirts of town as soon as possible because she needs help with a request."
"Huh. Go figure."
"Yes, go figure…" Takeshi looked at Yuuto with a suspicious look. "This is strange. First, Akeno-san invites me to go out shopping with her. Then, you ask for my help with a request, and now Koneko-chan is doing the same. It almost seems like you're all trying to keep me busy or something."
"You're overthinking things."
"Am I?" Takeshi said as he moved closer to Yuuto, an inquisitive look on his face. "Am I really? Because you're looking very uncomfortable for some reason, Yuuto."
"…It's your imagination." Yuuto said, averting his gaze. "I really should get going now, and you shouldn't keep Koneko-chan waiting. See you later, Takeshi-kun!"
"Oi, Yuuto! Wait up!"
Takeshi chased after the retreating Yuuto, but his fellow Devil was too fast for him. Ducking inside an alley, Yuuto vanished in a flash of light before Takeshi could catch up to him.
"OK, that's definitely suspicious…" Takeshi said with narrowed eyes. "In any case, better go see what Koneko-chan needs and see if I can get some information out of her."
After making sure no-one was around, Takeshi conjured a teleportation magic circle beneath him. One flash of light later, he found himself in the marshes outside Kuoh, where Koneko and a girl that was vaguely familiar were waiting for him. Said girl seemed to be around the same age as him, or maybe slightly older, with long, brown hair arranged in multiple drill-like curls and a voluptuous figure.
"Hey there, Koneko-chan." Takeshi raised his hand in greeting. "Who's your friend over there?"
"Ohohoho, it's good to meet the infamous Ryuugamine-kun at last!" The girl brought her hand to her mouth, laughing in a boisterous manner. "My name is Abe Kiyome, a soon-to-be third-year student in Kuoh Academy. I also know about your circumstances, so there's no need to act reserved around me."
"Ah, you're the captain of the tennis club, right?" Takeshi said. "But when you say you're aware of who we are, that means you belong to the 'other' side as well, no?"
"…She does." Koneko said. "Abe-senpai comes from a distinguished line of beast tamers."
"A human with a special background then." Takeshi said. "I assume you are part of the reason Koneko-chan asked for my help?"
Instead of answering, Kiyome approached Takeshi and began scrutinizing him, an intense expression on her face. For some reason, her gaze reminded Takeshi of an obsessed collector that had stumbled upon a particularly rare piece.
"You are the current Evil Dragon User, right?" Kiyome said, a glint in her eyes. "Truly a one-of-a-kind specimen… In that case, how about you come with me for a while? I'll be sure to treat you with extra care and—"
"I refuse." Takeshi cut her off. "No offense, Abe-senpai, but you're freaking me out a bit right now."
"Too bad." Kiyome said with a slight pout. "But I was half-joking in any case. I'm sure Rias-san would ask for quite the hefty compensation if I were to borrow you. I already owe her one for having you two help me, and I wouldn't want to end up forfeiting my soul in the end."
"…Devils no longer take souls." Koneko said with a fed-up expression. "President has told you so time and time again."
"Excuse me if I can't completely trust the word of a Devil." Kiyome said. "After all, the first rule of a beast tamer is to never let your guard down around a creature you don't fully understand."
"We're getting off-topic." Takeshi said. "What is this request of yours, Abe-senpai?"
"It's simple really." Kiyome began explaining. "A Kappa named Salamander Tomita used to live here, but was forced to return back to his family home."
"Wait a minute." Takeshi frowned. "Why is that Kappa's name Salamander Tomita? Aren't salamanders some sort of fire-breathing lizard? Why would a water-based Youkai have that kind of name?"
"Apparently, he changed his name when he got into rap and started aiming to become a rapper."
"A rapping Kappa…" Takeshi sighed. "You know your life is a sad mess when that sort of comment fails to make an impression…"
"…The light of the town which dries my plate, my anger which cannot be conveyed, I will just take your shirikodama."
Koneko started rapping next to Takeshi, prompting the latter to raise an eyebrow.
"You're into rap, Koneko-chan?"
"…Mm." Koneko nodded. "Salamander Tomita's Shirikodama Rhapsody is among my favorites. It was a sad day when Salamander Tomita had to return home to take over his family's cucumber farm."
"That's probably for the best." Kiyome said. "It isn't easy for a Kappa to make a living as a rapper. The problem is what came afterwards."
"Meaning?"
"A rowdy bunch of Kappa moved in shorty after Salamander Tomita left." Kiyome said. "Normally, I wouldn't bother with them, but they've been pestering the local Youkai, and even caused trouble with some of my beasts as well. Their presence is becoming very disruptive for the local ecosystem, and I'd like them removed."
"When you say removed…you want us to eliminate them?"
"No, no, there's no need to go that far." Kiyome responded to Takeshi's question. "Let's try negotiating with them first, and if this goes nowhere, feel free to rough them up a bit until they get scared. It shouldn't be too difficult for you Devils."
"What about the reward for this?"
"…President will take care of that." Koneko said. "I was supposed to do this on my own, but I thought it would be better if you were here as well. Sorry for troubling you, Senpai."
"Don't sweat it." Takeshi said. "Though it is odd that both you, Akeno-san and Yuuto seem determined to keep me occupied. Perhaps you know something about it, Koneko-chan?"
"…Not really." Koneko said, her features an expressionless mask. "Shouldn't we get going, Abe-senpai?"
"We should. It's this way. Follow me."
Kiyome and Koneko started heading deeper into the woods, giving Takeshi no chance to keep questioning Koneko. Letting out a grunt, he followed after the two of them. After walking for several minutes, the group arrived at the forest's edge, which was surrounded by marshes filled with reeds and low-growing shrubs. A small lake could be seen in the distance, its crystal-clear waters sparkling in the sunlight.
"Tch, I knew I should have brought my boots." Kiyome clicked her tongue in irritation as her shoes sank in the mud. "This is the worst…"
"Bear with it for a while." Takeshi said. "I don't think we're very far judging from all the noise."
True enough, raised voices could be heard in the distance, mixing together in some sort of cacophony that made one's ears hurt. Making sure to be as quiet as possible, the trio crouched down and approached the source of the noise.
"There they are…"
Kiyome remarked upon taking notice of a group of Kappa arguing ahead of them. All of them had the typical features of their kind, namely green scaly skin, a turtle-like beak and shell, webbed hands and feet, and a plate on their head that was filled with water. However, all of them were wore blue caps over their plates, purple T-shirts, baggy black pants, black leather jackets, gold shutter shades and had gold cucumber-shaped charms dangling from their necks, which made them look like a combination between gangsters and rappers.
"…These guys are…" Koneko's eyes widened at the sight of the Kappa. "I thought we had driven them away already…"
"You know them, Koneko-chan?"
Before Koneko could answer Takeshi's question, one of the Kappa threw his cap on the ground, a frustrated expression on his face.
"No, no, this is all wrong!" The Kappa, which seemed to be the leader judging from the large number of cucumber charms on it, shouted. "Ugh, that's why working with you guys is such a pain! Even if Salamander Tomita isn't here, we'll never rise to the top of the rapper world like that!"
"And who's fault is that!?" Another Kappa complained. "Your rhymes are the worst! That's why we lost the other time!"
"Want to say that to my face!?" The Kappa raised his fist in a threatening manner. "Come here if you dare! I'll break your plate into tiny pieces!"
As the Kappa started arguing amongst themselves once again, Takeshi turned to Kiyome.
"You sure you need our help, Senpai?" Takeshi asked. "These guys look like they're about to take each other out."
"Those Kappa love to argue in such a manner." Kiyome said. "They'll be bosom buddies again soon enough, so we'd better deal with them."
After saying so, Kiyome emerged from the reeds, with Takeshi and Koneko following after her, and addressed the Kappa.
"Hey, all of you! That's quite enough!"
The Kappa ceased their argument and turned to the trio.
"Well, well, what have we got here?" The Kappa leader sneered. "A human female and two Devils? I don't know why you're here, but you better make yourselves scarce unless you want your shirikodama taken."
"Boss!" One of the Kappa pointed at Koneko in alarm. "I remember her! She was with that Salamander Tomita bastard during the Ultimate Battle at the River Terrace!"
"…Long time no see, Gift Rappa." Koneko said. "That's what you loudmouths called yourselves, right?"
"Oh, so you remember us, white-haired Devil?" The Kappa leader sneered. "We haven't forgotten you either. Or rather, we haven't forgotten the humiliation we suffered back then."
"This time, Salamander Tomita isn't here to save you." One of the Kappa said. "Our beat will send you running back to Hell!"
"…Even if he's not here, we can still take you down." Koneko said. "You bunch of good-for-nothings."
"Eh, Koneko-chan?" Takeshi said. "A little context for those of us out of the loop?"
"…These rowdy Kappa think themselves as great rappers." Koneko said. "Last summer, they came to this town seeking to challenge Salamander Tomita-san in a rap battle and claim his turf. The two of us beat them in a contest and chased them away. Since Tomita-san isn't here, they must be trying to take control of his former home."
"That's all very interesting, but I have no patience for those who trouble my beloved beasts." Kiyome said, crossing her hands with an intense expression. "It would be in your best interests if you left this area and went to practice this rap of yours elsewhere."
"Brave words, little girl, but if you want us to leave, there's only one way to make us." The Kappa grinned. "Each of you must fight our representatives in rap battling! Win, and we will do as you say! Lose, and these grounds will officially become ours!"
"Huh?" Kiyome raised an eyebrow. "What nonsense is this? If you won't listen to reason, then—"
"…We accept." Koneko said, cutting off Kiyome's words. "You're going down just like last time."
"Brave words, little Devil!" The Kappa leader grinned. "However, we've changed a lot compared to back then! Pick your first fighter and let's begin this!"
"What are you doing, Koneko-san?" Kiyome frowned. "There's no need to go along with this farce."
"Agreed." Takeshi said. "They don't look that strong. We can simply blow them away and be done with it."
"…There's no need for violence." Koneko said. "Our secret weapon is more than enough for them."
"Secret weapon?" Takeshi said. "What secret weapon?"
Koneko pointed at Takeshi, with both him and Kiyome showing confused expressions.
"Ryuugamine-kun?" Kiyome asked. "Is Ryuugamine-kun some sort of rap prodigy?"
"…Far from it." Koneko said. "That's what I'm counting on."
"What's the holdup?" The Kappa leader said, tapping his foot on the ground with an impatient expression on his face. "Hurry up! Our first fighter is ready and waiting."
"…You heard them." Koneko said, pushing Takeshi forward. "Get out there and give them Hell, Senpai."
Takeshi let out a dispirited sigh. He understood what Koneko's plan was, but he wasn't sure if it would work out as she intended. Not to mention, he wasn't looking forward to embarrassing himself with his utter lack of knowledge about rap. Regardless, he was willing to try.
We can always beat them up afterwards if need be.
"So, this puny Devil is my opponent?" The Kappa facing Takeshi scoffed at him. "This is practically breaking a tadpole's plate at this point. Since you're so pitiful, I'll give you the first round."
"Have it your way."
Taking a deep breath and clearing his throat, Takeshi started rapping.
"Yo, say, ho! You know the name, you know the fame! You know the end coming right at your gate! The dread Dragon's maw roars, the sharp glowing claw gores! So I will just set fire to your world!"
Takeshi kept going like that, doing his best to endure his embarrassment. Despite the increasingly messy lyrics, his song's effect soon became apparent.
"Gah! What's this dreadful noise!?"
"A curse!? Is he firing a curse!?"
"Make it stop, make it stop! My ears feel like they're about to fall off!"
"My soul! I can feel my soul trying to leave my body!"
"Hiiii! My plate is! My plate is cracking!"
The group of Kappa had lost all semblance of order due to Takeshi's terrible voice. Some had passed out with foam coming from their mouths, others had buried their heads in the ground in an attempt to block the noise and others had fled as fast as they could. As for Takeshi's opponent, he was one of the lucky ones who had lost consciousness. Having anticipated this, Koneko had used her demonic power to create a soundproof barrier around her and Kiyome.
After a couple of minutes, Takeshi stopped singing, surveying the scene of the carnage with a half-satisfied, half-dismayed expression.
"…Good going, Takeshi-senpai." Koneko pat his back. "I knew we could count on you."
"I almost feel sorry for them." Kiyome said. "I don't even want to imagine the horror they experienced. Are you sure you don't have some Banshee blood in you, Ryuugamine-kun?"
"As far as I know, no."
Meanwhile, Koneko had located the unconscious Kappa leader and dragged him back to the other two youths. After slapping him several times, the Kappa leader woke up while groaning.
"…What happened…?" The Kappa leader groaned. "I feel like I had a terrible nightmare…"
Upon taking notice of Takeshi, the Kappa leader's eyes opened wide as he backed away as fast as he could.
"S-Stay away, you damn monster! That horrifying voice is something that shouldn't exist in this world!"
"I know I'm bad at this, but you don't have to be so rude about it…"
"Looks like we can finally come to an understanding." Kiyome said with a cheerful expression. "Take your goons and leave this place, or I'll sick Ryuugamine-kun and his curse-like voice at you again. What do you say?"
"We're leaving this place at once!" The Kappa leader screeched. "You won't see us ever again!"
After all Kappa present had woken up, they gathered around the Kappa leader. Making a hasty bow to his former opponents while making sure not to spill the remaining water in his plate, the Kappa leader led his group inside the forest, vanishing from the three youths' sight.
"All's well that ends well." Kiyome said with a satisfied expression. "The Kappa are gone, and the marshes are peaceful once again. I'm sure Estleena will be happy to swim in the lake again without being pestered by those annoyances. Thank you for your good work, Ryuugamine-kun, Koneko-san."
"…It was nothing."
"Could have done without that whole rap battling thing…"
Koneko and Takeshi responded. Kiyome then whistled, with a large black horse emerging from the forest, galloping towards them and coming to a stop next to her.
"Tell Rias-san that we can meet whenever she wishes to." Kiyome said as she mounted the horse. "Well then, I bid you adieu!"
After saying so, the horse took off, with both it and Kiyome vanishing into the forest.
"That was…interesting to say the least." Takeshi remarked before turning to Koneko. "And now, it's just the two of us. Do you feel like explaining what's going on? And don't insult my intelligence by trying to convince me that nothing's amiss."
"…All will be revealed soon." Koneko said, passing a leaflet to Takeshi. "For now, you should meet with President for your reward."
"A teleportation magic circle?" Takeshi frowned. "Where does it connect to?"
"…Sugito Town." Koneko said. "President is waiting there."
"That's rather far from here." Takeshi said. "Why is she there?"
"…You'll have to ask her that yourself." Koneko said. "Maybe she'll be in the mood to answer your other question as well."
Takeshi looked at the transportation magic circle for a few seconds before sighing.
"…Fine, I'll play your little game for a while longer." Takeshi said. "But I'd better get some answers soon."
Takeshi channeled his demonic power into the paper, forming a teleportation magic circle beneath him. He closed his eyes as the light engulfed him, transporting him into an unfamiliar park.
"Ah, you're here, Takeshi."
Takeshi turned around, coming face-to-face with Rias, who was wearing a beige cardigan, a shirt with red stripes, white jeans and matching shoes. Much like Akeno, her current outfit gave her a refreshing look fit for a girl her age.
"President." Takeshi said. "You look amazing in that outfit. Seriously, all you girls are beauties, yet you keep one-upping yourselves."
"Thank you for your kind words." Rias smiled. "You must be wondering why I summoned you here."
"Among other things." Takeshi said. "Since everyone else is avoiding the subject, mind giving me an answer as to why everyone seems hellbent on passing me around like a hot potato today? Is something going on? Are you planning to prank me or something?"
"I can't reveal the specifics just yet." Rias made a shush gesture. "But I promise it's nothing bad. As for you being here, well, the reason is this."
Rias pointed at the distance, where the top of a Ferris wheel could be seen.
"A new amusement park opened here recently, and I've been looking for a chance to visit it." Rias said, an excited look on her face. "Since you helped with Kiyome-san's request, I figured I'd reward you by having you join me."
"Ehhh, but that's not really my thing." Takeshi complained. "Couldn't the reward just be monetary or something?"
"I'll pretend I didn't hear that, and that you didn't just make the implication that you're unsatisfied with my company." Rias said with a slight pout. "Now, let's go enjoy ourselves!"
Rias wrapped her arm around Takeshi's, half-dragging him towards the amusement park. While the park didn't appeal that much to him, he couldn't help but feel a little excited about spending more time with Rias. Once the two of them arrived at the amusement park and paid the entry fee, Rias turned to Takeshi.
"Since I kind of dragged you here, it's only fair that you get to pick the first ride." Rias said. "What will it be?"
"In that case…how about we start with something simple?"
Takeshi pointed at a merry-go-round ahead of them. Rias nodded as she followed after him, mounting the horse behind his. Once the merry-go-round starting spinning, with the horses moving up and down, Takeshi glanced at Rias behind him. He couldn't help but feel that the smiling girl behind him truly looked like a princess when sitting in the saddle all regal-like. Taking out his cellphone, he took several pictures of her. For some reason, he felt like preserving this memory.
"Hey, if you wanted to take pictures, you should have told me beforehand." Rias said after they got down. "I could have posed in a better way."
"No, that was perfect." Takeshi said. "President having fun in a natural manner is the best. I'm starting to think this excursion won't be a total waste of time."
"That's the spirit." Rias grinned. "Now, it's my turn. How about…we try this one next?"
"A haunted house?" Takeshi said upon noticing what Rias was pointing at. "Why there of all places?"
"I haven't visited something like that before, so I'm looking forward to see what humans consider as horror." Rias said. "It should be an interesting experience."
"If you're looking for an interesting experience there, I think you'll be disappointed."
Just as Takeshi predicted, the haunted house proved to be a bust. Not only did their enhanced Devil senses brightened the dimly lit interior, taking away the element of suspense and fear the atmosphere usually brought, the actors dressed as monsters that popped up at random intervals weren't terrifying at all. Having faced several deranged Strays and a group of powerful evil Youkai, a group of costumed humans failed to make an impression on the two young Devils.
"Looks like you were right, Takeshi." Rias let out a dispirited sigh. "That was a total waste of time. Now, if they had some camels in there…"
"Did you just say camels?" Takeshi said, an incredulous expression on his face. "Don't tell me…you're scared of camels, President?"
"Of all the things, you had to hear that…" Rias said with an embarrassed expression. "Wait, why are you snickering, Takeshi?"
"No…I'm sorry…it's just…" Takeshi said, his hand over his mouth as he struggled to contain his chuckles. "Isn't the Gremory clan's mascot a camel? And you're telling me the future heir, the almighty Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess…is afraid of camels?"
"It's not funny!" Rias pouted, hitting Takeshi's arm. "When I was young, I made fun of some camels my family was raising and those…those horrible beasts started chasing me around the Gremory estate! It was terrible! The worst memory of my life!"
"OK, OK." Takeshi made a placating gesture. "I'm sorry I brought that up. Let's just forget about it and move on to the next ride. Oh, why don't we try the teacups next?"
"Alright…"
Rias followed after Takeshi, still a little sore about her weakness being exposed. After enjoying some rounds on the teacups, they moved to a pirate ship ride, followed by several rounds on the bumper cars, where Takeshi made sure to bump his car into every other participant at least once and claim victory afterwards, much to Rias's amusement. Once they had explored the park's large hedge maze, which took them about half an hour, Rias pointed at the roller coaster in the distance.
"We should go to that one next." Rias said. "You can't visit an amusement park and not ride the roller coaster."
"I'm…not sure that's such a god idea…"
"Why not?" Rias asked, taking note of Takeshi's reluctant expression. "Don't tell me you're afraid or something?"
"As if!" Takeshi spoke in a defiant tone. "I fear nothing, least of all a mere roller coaster ride! Let's go!"
The two Devils headed towards the small line that had formed in front of the roller coaster. After waiting for a few minutes, they eventually boarded one of the roller coaster's wagons.
"The route seems to be filled with a lot of twists and turns, along with some of the sharpest inclines I've seen in a roller coaster." Rias commented in an enthusiastic manner. "Looks like we're in for a wild ride!"
"2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23…"
Instead of responding, Takeshi was busy counting prime numbers, his eyes shut, his face drained of color and his hands trembling. At that moment, a horn sounded and the roller coaster started moving. As it picked up speed and started pulling all sorts of wild maneuvers, Rias let out an ecstatic laugh. Takeshi, on the other hand—
"Get me out of this contraption!"
Having lost his composure somewhere around the first incline, Takeshi started screaming, a terrified expression on his face as he tightly clutched his lap bar, denting it slightly. Fortunately, he still had enough sense not to unfurl his Devil wings and jump off the wagon. After what felt like centuries to him, the ride finally came to an end, with Takeshi jumping out of his seat and running away as fast as his shaky legs allowed him.
"Oh my, what happened?" Rias said in a teasing manner after catching up to him. "Don't tell me the almighty Evil Dragon User is scared of a mere roller coaster?"
"It's not…funny…" Takeshi wheezed, struggling to regain his composure. "When I first rode a roller coaster…as a child…it scared me half to death. Even now…I still…can't get over it…"
"You're a Devil that has survived a couple of life-threatening situations, yet a simple park ride reduces you to a quivering mess." Rias giggled. "I'm sorry, but I can't help but find it hilarious."
"Yeah, I guess it is." Takeshi said. "Almost as hilarious as you being scared of camels."
"Oh, I see how it is." Rias said. "Tell you what, I won't make fun of your roller coaster phobia, and you won't make fun of my fear of camels. Deal?"
"Deal."
Both Rias and Takeshi high-fived each other. Upon noticing that the sun was going down, Rias turned to Takeshi.
"Going to the Ferris wheel last is a must and we have some time to spare." Rias said. "Where would you like to go?"
"How about we get something to commemorate this day?" Takeshi said, pointing at a shooting range stall. "Any of the prizes there seem interesting to you?"
"Well…I'd like that one if possible."
Rias pointed at a medium-sized samurai plushie. Takeshi nodded and, after paying the manager, picked up the popgun and loaded the cork bullet. Bending forward and taking aim, he fired the first round, but missed. His second shot hit the plushie's side, but wasn't enough to knock it down. Taking a deep breath and adjusting his aim, Takeshi fired once again. This time, his aim was true, bringing down the plushie.
"Alright!" Takeshi cheered, making a V-sign once he received the plushie. "Here you are, President."
"Thank you." Rias smiled, hugging the plushie close to her. "What about you though? Don't you want something as well?"
"No, I'm good." Takeshi said. "President's smiling face is worth more than all the prizes in this park combined."
"Koneko is right." Rias chuckled. "You are quite the smooth talker, aren't you, Takeshi?"
"If Koneko-chan is saying it, it must be true." Takeshi grinned. "In any case, we should hurry if we want to ride the Ferris wheel before the park closes. You go on ahead, and I'll go buy a drink for me. Do you want something as well, President?"
"Just water would be fine, thank you."
Takeshi nodded as he went to a nearby vending machine, buying two bottles of water. Once he made his way to the Ferris wheel, he witnessed a couple of guys about two to three years older than him accosting Rias. While he knew that she could handle herself, he figured it was best to settle this as quickly as possible. As he got closer, he could make out what one of them was saying to her.
"Come on, babe, don't be difficult. Genta and I will show you a great time if you just—"
"Excuse me, but is there a reason you're bothering my girlfriend?" Takeshi cut in, putting his arm around Rias's shoulder and hugging her close to him. "We're kind of the middle of a date here."
"She's your girlfriend?" One of the youths raised an eyebrow. "I don't buy it. A gorgeous girl like her and someone like you—"
"Someone…like me?"
Takeshi cut off the young man, narrowing his eyes and letting out a bit of his demonic power and draconic aura. The effect was instantaneous as both youths took a step backwards, a fearful expression on their faces and looking ready to wet themselves.
"S-Sorry to bother you!"
Both men turned around and left the area as fast as they could. Once he was sure they were out of sight, Takeshi separated himself from Rias.
"Your girlfriend, eh?" Rias let out a sly smirk. "Someone's getting a little ahead of themselves. I don't remember us getting together or anything like that."
"It's not like that, President. I—"
"I know, I'm just messing with you." Rias said. "Still, since you're my pretend boyfriend right now…do you think you could talk to me in a more casual manner? At least until we're out of this park?"
"More casual? I don't know if—"
"Pretty please?"
Rias said, giving a sad puppy stare with her arms clasped before her. Takeshi groaned a bit, taking a deep breath before speaking.
"…We should get going if we don't want to miss the last ride—Rias."
Upon hearing that, Rias's smile became wider.
"Yes, let's go, Takeshi."
Rias held Takeshi's hand as they headed towards the Ferris wheel, a cheerful expression on her face. Once the two had boarded a cabin, the Ferris wheel started rotating slowly, raising their cabin.
"We Devils are creatures that are blessed with flight, yet there's something unique about seeing the ground from above like this." Rias remarked while staring at the scenery outside. "Don't you think so, Takeshi?"
"I think I do, though I still prefer flying." Takeshi said. "Since we're all alone, mind if I ask you a personal question?"
"If it's something I can answer, then go ahead."
"Akeno-san told me once that you wanted to do business in Japan because you were fond of it." Takeshi said. "I was curious how that happened."
"That's probably because of my brother's Knight, Okita Souji-san." Rias said, caressing the samurai plushie she was holding. "He always told me all sorts of stories about this land, and I grew to love it because of that. That's why I wanted to come here no matter what, and I haven't regretted it so far."
"I see." Takeshi said. "But Okita Souji? Your brother's Knight has the same name as the captain of the Shinsengumi's first unit? That's quite the coincidence."
"There's no coincidence. They're the same person."
Takeshi froze for a few seconds, unable to comprehend what Rias had just said at first.
"The same…?" Takeshi muttered. "That…makes sense, I guess. If the Evil Pieces system is about six centuries old, it should come as no surprise that some Reincarnated Devils are historical figures from those periods."
"It's more common than you think." Rias said. "Several High-class Devils have at least one such figure serving under them. Most of these people left their mark on history because of their unique abilities after all, which made them prime candidates for Peerage members."
"Yeah, if I was a High-class Devil, I'd definitely try to scout such talented individuals myself." Takeshi said. "Still, I never would have thought that the Okita Souji was the reason you came to Japan."
"Like I said, he was a big influence…but he wasn't the only reason."
"Oh?" Takeshi raised an eyebrow. "Then, what was the other reason?"
"I…am a Gremory." Rias said, a bit of hesitation in her voice. "The next heir of the noble House of Gremory, Rias Gremory. It's a title I carry with pride…but there are several unpleasant strings attached to it."
"The perils of noble life, eh?" Takeshi nodded in understanding. "Stuff like political intrigue, conflict between families and a huge amount of responsibility?"
"Pretty much." Rias let out a sad smile. "Noble society can be very stifling. Apart from a close circle of friends and family, I always have to mind my words and actions around other nobles lest I give them ammunition to use against me in the future, and I must always appear impeccable in public gatherings for the same reason. Moreover, most Devils that approach me only view me as the daughter of the Gremory family, never as Rias the individual. They're either too terrified of my status, or only care about how I can be of use to them."
"Sounds like it's not as privileged a life as one would have you believe."
"That's why I value my time in the human world, where I can be just Rias." Rias said. "Here I can laugh, cry, play, act like a girl my age in general, and no-one will judge me. There is a sense of distance between me and most of the student body, but it's still far better than the Underworld. One day in the near future, I will have to assume my responsibilities as the next heir and as a noble Devil…but until then, I want to enjoy this dream for as long as it lasts."
A melancholic expression appeared on Rias's face as she said so. Takeshi could only imagine what she was struggling with, but that didn't change what he had to do. Placing his hand on top of hers, he spoke.
"Rias, I don't know what someone like me can do for you, but I will support you in any way that I can when the time comes. I might plan to go independent in the future, but even then, you can always count on me to help you no matter what."
"…Thank you, Takeshi." Rias smiled, placing her hand on top of his. "Whatever happens in the future, know that I will never regret making you a part of my family."
The two of them sat in comfortable silence for a while as their cabin reached the top. Then, Rias spoke.
"Takeshi, I would also like to ask you a personal question if you don't mind."
"Sure thing."
"Every time you're involved in something resembling a competition, you always strive for victory." Rias said. "Don't get me wrong, it's good that you're driven as long as you don't take it too far. I was just wondering if there was some special reason for that."
Takeshi let out a deep sigh at Rias's question.
"Why I want to win, eh…?" Takeshi muttered. "Are you sure you want to hear this? It might spoil your mood."
"Try me."
"Alright then." Takeshi said. "I guess my family is the main reason. You've seen my father and mother. Both are healthy, they have stable, well-paying jobs, they're enjoying a happy marriage, they have a child and are generally living well. No matter how you look at it, they have succeeded in life. Others members of my family…weren't so lucky."
"What do you mean by that?"
"I guess I should start with my father's brother, uncle Masaki." Takeshi said. "He was an avid fan of Showa-era Kamen Rider and the reason I'm such a big tokusatsu fan. Hell, he was the one who convinced my parents to name me Takeshi after his favorite hero."
"I bet that must have been an interesting discussion."
"It probably was." Takeshi chuckled. "In any case, my uncle and his wife were running one of the most prominent restaurants in Osaka. You see, my uncle was a very talented chef, to the point that family gatherings where he was the one cooking could end in a bloodbath due to everyone trying to grab the bigger portion for themselves. He seemingly had it made…until he didn't."
"What happened?"
"I'm not really clear on the details." Takeshi said. "He made some bad investments, trusted the wrong suppliers, and in the end, he was forced to close his restaurant. His wife left him shortly afterwards, blaming the whole mess on his poor management skills. He was left destitute and depressed. My father reached out to him several times, tried to offer help, but was rebuffed every time. Uncle Masaki was always too proud for his own good…"
"So where is your uncle now?" Rias asked. "From the way this story is going, his tale probably doesn't have a happy ending."
"No, it doesn't." Takeshi said with a dark expression. "He started drinking heavily to cope, and one night, while coming back from a bar…he lost control of his car and drove straight off a cliff. Death was instant according to the autopsy reports. That was about eight years ago."
"I'm very sorry for your loss."
"Thank you." Takeshi closed his eyes for a few seconds, gathering himself before continuing. "Then, there was my cousin from my mother's side, Hiyori. She was an up-and-coming track-and-field athlete who showed a lot of promise…until it was discovered that she was doping using a new substance that was supposedly undetected by the usual tests."
"Doping?" Rias frowned. "Was she that desperate to succeed?"
"Probably. Even worse, she was stealing money from her friends and parents to cover the costs for this drug. I used to look up to her, but you can never guess what a person is hiding deep inside." Takeshi snorted. "You can only trust yourself in the end. In any case, after she was found out, they banned her, her parents disowned her, and now, she's making a living working several odd jobs from what I last heard."
Takeshi clenched his right hand into a fist before continuing.
"The successes and failures of my family taught me one thing." Takeshi said. "In the end…only those who win matter. Defeat, in any shape or form, leaves behind only bitterness, regrets and pain. Victory through dishonorable means does the same. The truth always comes out in the end and destroys you. That's why, I resolved to hone myself and win in the areas that matter to me in a way that I can be proud of myself."
"I understand where you're coming from, but sometimes, defeat is also necessary." Rias said. "Through it, you can learn important lessons that can be used to improve yourself. Don't you think so?"
"I suppose…though it depends on how severe that defeat is." Takeshi said. "There are losses you can't bounce back from. Best to be as prepared as possible beforehand."
"Given what you've told me so far, I understand why you'd think so." Rias said as the Ferris wheel completed its cycle, with the two youths exiting their cabin. "I appreciate that you shared all that with me, Takeshi. I apologize if this brought back painful memories."
"What happened, happened, and I've made my peace with it." Takeshi said. "Besides, it would be rude of me to hold back when you opened up first, no?"
"Probably a little, yes."
Leaving the amusement park behind them, Rias and Takeshi entered a deserted building a few blocks away from it. Once she was sure no-one was around, Rias formed a teleportation magic circle, transporting the two youths back to Kuoh.
"We're…right outside my house, President?" Takeshi noted, slipping back into the usual way he called Rias now that their outing was over. "Wasn't this a little risky?"
"Don't worry." Rias said. "I made sure to deploy a warding barrier beforehand. Since I'm here, let me join you inside. I'd like to greet your parents as well."
"Deploy a barrier beforehand…?" Takeshi frowned as he followed after Rias, unlocking the front door and stepping inside with her. "When did you do that? Hey, what about the reason you guys were trying to keep me busy all day? You still haven't—"
[Surprise!]
Takeshi was startled by the sudden appearance of his parents and the members of the Occult Research Club, who were all wearing party hats. Taking a look around, he noticed that the house had been lavishly decorated, while a large banner with 'Happy seventeenth birthday, Takeshi!' written on it had been hanged on the ceiling.
"You guys… What…?"
"Happy birthday, my dear." Shiori stepped forward and hugged Takeshi. "It's two days earlier than the actual date of April fourth, but I hope you'll forgive us for that."
"Today was a good opportunity since both your mother and I had the day off." Hiroto said. "That's why we asked your new friends to help us organize a little surprise party for you. Hope you're happy with it, son!"
"So that's why you were all trying to keep me busy." Takeshi grinned. "Quite the devious plan."
"I hope you'll forgive us for that." Rias smiled. "But it's not like you had a terrible time today, right?"
"No, not by a long shot." Takeshi grinned. "I'm very thankful that you went to all this trouble for me, everyone."
"It was nothing." Yuuto said. "We were more than happy to help."
"Don't just stand there, Takeshi-kun." Akeno said as she led him to the dining room, where a large cake with several candles on it had been placed on the table. "These candles aren't going to blow themselves out."
"…Make a good wish."
Koneko added from the side. Once everyone had finished singing happy birthday to him, Takeshi stood in front of the cake and took a deep breath as he closed his eyes.
I wish…I can celebrate many more birthdays like this in the future…
Takeshi wished as he blew out the candles, with everyone around him clapping.
"Once again, I'm grateful to all of you for this." Takeshi smiled, and then a sly grin appeared on his face. "Why, I'm so happy that I could sing right now."
[Don't you dare!]
Everybody screamed together at once.
"Takeshi, you know that your mother and I love you very much, so don't get me wrong when I say this." Hiroto said with a serious expression as he placed his hand on Takeshi's shoulder. "I'd rather perform lobotomy on myself with a rusted kitchen knife than have to listen to you sing."
"Thanks, Dad." Takeshi said in a sarcastic tone. "You always know what to say to shatter my self-esteem."
"Don't feel bad about this." Shiori said, hugging Takeshi again. "Everyone has one or two things they're bad at. Your father, for instance, can't ride a bicycle to save his life."
"Hey, you said we'd keep this between us, Shiori! Treason!"
Everyone laughed at Hiroto's dismayed expression. Then, Rias turned to Takeshi.
"So, what will it be first? Food or presents?"
"I'm curious to inspect this year's haul, so presents it is." Takeshi said with a faux haughty expression. "You may present your offerings."
"Don't be like that." Shiori said as she handed a medium-sized box to Takeshi. "This is from your father and I. We hope you'll put it to good use."
Takeshi unwrapped his first present, which was a brand-new tablet.
"Nice!" Takeshi grinned. "And I was just thinking I needed to get a new one. Thanks, Mom, Dad!"
"This is mine, though I think you have guessed what it is." Akeno said, passing a wrapped package to Takeshi. "Something to remember today by, ufufu~."
Upon tearing the wrappings, Takeshi saw that one of the jackets and trousers that Akeno had recommended to him earlier today were contained within the package.
"Thank you very much, Akeno-san." Takeshi smiled. "Though I'm sure I wouldn't forget this day either way…"
"Mine is next." Yuuto handed a small package to Takeshi. "I wasn't really sure what to buy you, so I settled for this."
Takeshi opened it, taking out a watch-shaped activity tracker.
"Oh, this is the latest model!" Takeshi remarked. "Must have been quite expensive. Thanks a lot, Yuuto! This will definitely be useful."
"…Happy birthday, Senpai. This is from me."
Opening Koneko's present, Takeshi grinned.
"The new fighting game that came out a couple of weeks ago, Maximum Beatdown IV, eh? Excellent choice as always, Koneko-chan. We should definitely try it out one of these days."
"…Definitely."
"Last, but not least, it's my present." Rias said as she gave Takeshi a medium-sized box. "I hope you'll appreciate it, since it was a pain to find."
Upon opening it, Takeshi let out a strangled gasp, barely holding onto the box.
"T-This is!" Takeshi took the figure placed inside with trembling hands. "Could it be…? No, it is! The super limited-edition figure of Mashin Chaser with the actor's signature on the base! Where did you unearth this treasure, President!?"
"Like I said, it wasn't easy." Rias said. "I had to use my family's connections, but we managed to find someone who had the figure and was willing to sell it for a…certain price. This is your first birthday as part of our group, so I wanted to make it a memorable one with a gift you would cherish."
After a few seconds of silence, Takeshi grabbed Rias's hands, an intense expression on his face.
"Marry me. Seriously, marry me."
"E-Eh?"
Rias stuttered, unable to process Takeshi's words.
"Ara, ara, President's face has turned as red as her hair." Akeno started laughing. "Ufufu, you sure are an enthusiastic man, Takeshi-kun."
"Woah, there, slow down, Takeshi!" Shiori shouted from the side. "I get that you're excited, but it's way too soon for something like that!"
"No, no, don't stop him!" Hiroto yelled. "Full speed ahead, Takeshi! A man must always trust his gut and move forward bravely!"
"Don't encourage him, Hiroto!"
"I think I'm starting to see why Takeshi-kun is so energetic."
Yuuto said with a smile, with Koneko nodding next to him, busy devouring a piece of cake.
Once the chaos died down, the Ryuugamine family and the Occult Research Club sat down to eat. After dinner was finished and his fellow Devils took their leave, Takeshi offered to help with tidying up. However, Shiori dismissed him, insisting that he should rest and that she and Hiroto would take care of everything. He eventually relented and went to his room.
"How long was it since I last celebrated such boisterous birthday?" Takeshi wondered as he fell on his bed, observing the figure Rias had given him. "Probably seven years ago. If only such days could last forever…"
[Boring! Slaughter and pain are an Evil Dragon's true calling!]
Takeshi stood up at once, an alarmed expression on his face. The voice seemed to be coming from inside his head, but was very different from Nidhogg's sinister tone. This one was rough, as if someone was dragging a serrated knife over a metal surface. The underlying madness in it gave him chills.
"Don't tell me…"
Takeshi narrowed his eyes. Unless he was hallucinating from exhaustion, he knew this was a troublesome omen. However, there was nothing he could do about it now other than grit his teeth and power through whatever came his way next.
"I'll deal with what happens when it happens…"
Takeshi muttered as he went to sleep, his pleasant mood spoiled by a touch of unease about the future.
This concludes Chapter 10. First, in response to your questions.
—To Guest: Tsukuyomi won't go out of his way to seek out Takeshi once Orochi awakens. If the two happen to cross paths though while Orochi is awake…yeah, Takeshi would be in for a rough time. As for the Azazel Cup and Peerage, some members will be the same, and some will be different.
This chapter was a bit of a downtime chapter like I said before, a chance for Takeshi to grow a little closer with the rest of his comrades after all these fierce battles. This chapter turned out a lot bigger than expected (it's probably my longest chapter yet), but I think it was worth it. We also have Takeshi's birthday now, April 4th. There's also hints of a new Evil Dragon awakening, so look forward to that!
Well, that's all for now. The Fallen Angel arc finally begins next chapter, and like I said before, I intend for it to diverge from canon a lot. Until then, please read, review, but most of all, enjoy!
See you all next time!
