Richard Webber wasn't a man who was easily told what he had to do. But in this situation, he was stuck and devastated.
He was just looking at the paramedic crew wheeling the gurney to the rooms where he knew a lot of his staff were going to protest violently. But he decided that he was going to do everything he could before the situation got out of hand.
« You have to know Miss Benedict that you cannot do this. Miss Robbins is waiting for the police to press charges against you. And we are not going to let you transfer them to another hospital. » Richard said quietly. He had all the papers Jamie had given him. He had taken the time to read everything, Jamie's lawyer was pressuring him.
« Listen Mr Webber, my client is the medical proxy of both Miss Robbins and the young boy Robbins. So, you should have informed her they were here. It's her family we are talking about. »
« It's Dr Webber. And I have some information that makes the papers you have given me completely void…. So, we are going to wait for the police, and then, we'll talk. But for the moment I'm going to ask you to leave my hospital. » The older surgeon was now losing his patience.
Jamie clenched her fist in annoyance. She was used to doing whatever she wanted when it came to Arizona. The blonde had been admitted in different hospitals through the years and nobody had ever said anything when she came to get her girlfriend back. She had always signed the discharged papers even when Arizona was still in pain and needed more time in the hospital.
But she knew that it wouldn't be the same here, but she would find a way.
« Listen Dr Webber, I don't have any time to lose. » She warned him. « I have already wasted enough of my time. So, you are going to let me take my partner and our boy home. »
« Ms Robbins has changed her medical proxy, she is denying you any access to her, and you have no rights regarding her nephew. » Richard repeated. « And the papers you have given me are from her therapist saying she is unfit to take care of herself or her nephew, but you don't have any legal documents..So this discussion ends here. »
Breathing heavily and biting her lips, Jamie's frustration was palpable and her lawyer understood it was better to live for the moment.
« Ok Ms Benedict, calm down, we are going to cool down, maybe go for a coffee ok? » He asked his client. « But we'll be right back, with all the papers. So please be ready. »
« Ms. Robbins state is critical. She's not going to be transferred any time soon. » Richard yelled at them as the duo walked out of the hospital.
« You did great Richard! » Bailey told him. « You did amazing. »
« I wish I could have done so much more... »
…
« Callie, I don't think you are the best person to take over her case. » April repeated.
« Once again Kepner, I don't need your opinion. I want what's best for her. And I know her. » Callie snapped. « I have lost 4 years without her. And…It certainly isn't you who is going to keep me away from her. »
« Are you listening to you? » The red head snapped back. « You're talking about Arizona as if she was still your girlfriend, or even more. But guess what, you broke up with her years ago. And after everything she's been through, you can't say you know her. She's somebody we used to know. But you're a doctor for god's sake! You know that years of abuse changes people. »
« Wow, condescending much! Of course I know that. » Callie replied. « I'm aware she's not the same person she was before. But she's still Arizona and I... »
« And you love her. And that's why you are biased. » April insisted. « Callie, I want the same things for her, but I think that a more neutral person should talk to her about what's happening. »
« Kepner is right Callie, and you know that. I'll do it. I'll explain, but you can come inside if you want to support her. » Owen said.
….
Arizona woke up again, her head was spinning, but she was hearing people talking heatedly in the hallway.
She wasn't able to get every word and she didn't really want to.
It was Callie, April and Owen. The chat seemed heated. She looked around the room and no one was here. She felt a little relieved, she wanted some time on her own.
She was happy to see her former friends. She missed them for years, but it felt so weird to be back in this hospital.
She frowned as she heard the surgeons arguing in the hallway again.
She just hoped that it had nothing to do with her.
That's when her gaze fell on the tablet Amelia or another surgeon must have let there. She didn't really mind it, but she noticed the hospital logo had change, and then she read « Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital »
Grey... She knew that Elis Grey had been one of the reasons that the hospital was renowned throughout the country, so they could have renamed it after her. But Sloan?
Was it to do with Mark Sloan?
She sighed, remembering how annoying the plastic surgeon was. He was always around Callie, always having something to say about everything.
She hadn't seen him around, but it wasn't really weird because the two of them weren't exactly friends.
And then she thought back about the little girl she had met hours earlier.
Little Sofia was literally a mini Calliope. Same dark hair, same big brown eyes.
She couldn't help but wonder how Callie became a mother. Was she married, divorced, was she a single mother?
Anyway, it wasn't any of her business. She wasn't even allowed TO mind about that situation.
The little girl seemed playful and curious, and she had an amazing smile, just like her mothers.
Thinking about it made butterflies flutter in her stomach and it was a feeling she hadn't been able to have for a long time.
It also made her sad because she and Callie were a thing of the past.
Spaced out in her own thoughts, she didn't realize Callie was in her room and had greeted her.
« Arizona? You okay? » Callie worried, speaking louder and making the blonde jump in surprise.
« no... No, I'm good. » She said, smiling shily. « I was just daydreaming... »
« There's something you need to know. » Callie said as she walked to sit next to her. She took the blonde's hand and tried to remain calm, even if she was furious inside.
« Listen, I'm sorry for earlier. » Arizona apologized. « I reacted poorly. I just needed a minute. I'm genuinely happy for you. She's beautiful, and I'm sure you're an amazing mother. You and... your partner must be proud. »
« I...Ugh... Ok... » Callie mumbled. « I wasn't going to talk about Sofia. But we should. But before you need to hear this. »
« Ok... » Arizona knitted her brows. At the same moment, Callie waved at Owen who opened the door and joined them.
« The police will be here in a moment. But we need to know what you want to do regarding Jamie Benedict. » Owen explained. « We don't want to pressure you, but she was at the hospital earlier, and she was trying to make you and Matthew transfer to another hospital. »
Arizona froze on the spot. Her head was suddenly hurting a lot and everything was spinning in the room. She blinked several times before turning her head and throwing up on the floor.
She looked horrified at Callie and Owen who were taken aback by the reaction their friend just had.
« I'm sorry... I'm sorry... » Arizona repeated, her eyes showing nothing but fear. « I didn't mean to... Please... I'm sorry... »
« it's okay honey. We are going to clean that up. It's okay. » Callie rushed to the blond' side gently stroking her hair and trying to calm her down.
« I don't want to see her. Please... Help me. » the blonde pleaded in an emotional state. « She's going to kill us. I shouldn't have run away... Oh my god. »
« Don't worry, she can't do anything. She doesn't have any legal papers, so she can't transfer you. » Owen explained.
« She will find a way. She aways does. » Arizona panicked; her eyes filled with tears. « She knows people, she knows the law. I can't do it again I can't go back... »
« Please, Arizona you have to listen. » Owen continued. « If you want to be legally protected, you need to press charges and to ask for a restraining order for you and Matthew. »
« I can't stay here. She knows where we are... » Arizona repeated. « Please don't let her. Please... »
Callie looked at the woman she loved breaking down. Her sobs were loud and heart breaking. She sat calmly next to her, stroking her hair as Owen felt useless.
As Arizona calmed down slowly, Callie looked at the trauma surgeon and nodded, meaning it was time to ask Arizona again if she was ready to do the right thing.
« Arizona, I know this is hard, and that you are scared, but we need to know if you are going to ask for the restraining order so we can ask for a police officer to look after you and Matthew. You've done the hardest part already. You have set yourself free from her grip. You have to stand up for you and Matthew. And now you have an entire hospital who is fighting with you. » Owen smiled at her.
Arizona took a deep breath. She knew Owen was right, and she felt stupid for hesitating. Feeling supported for the first time in years, she looked at him and nodded.
« Yes, I'll do anything and everything. »
« Great. I'm going to inform security and Richard. » Owen smiled. « We are so happy you're back. We are going to help you and Matthew all the way. »
Owen left the room, so the two ex-lovers were now alone. Callie felt suddenly awkward where she was and she stood up to grab the chair and put a little distance between them.
She didn't let go of her hand though, grabbing it immediately as she sat down.
« You made the right choice Arizona. You are going to be okay. » Callie said as she kissed the back of Arizona's hand.
The blonde felt goosebumps as her ex-girlfriends lips touched her skin. And suddenly she felt safe, and she wanted more. She pulled Callie's arm, silently asking her to get back where she was.
Surprised, Callie let Arizona lead the way.
« Can you raise my bed a little? » Arizona asked.
Callie did as she was asked, pushing the green plastic button, so Arizona was now in a half sitting position. Arizona turned her body a little, or as much as her injuries allowed her too. She hated this situation, being unable to move the way she wanted was so frustrating right now.
Almost instinctively, Callie rested her head on the pillow, she was facing Arizona and she felt a bit intimidated.
« I will make sure you are always safe, you and Matthew. » Callie whispered, as Arizona stared at her. « I promise I will. »
Arizona leaned in closer, their lips brushing against each other.
« Don't make Promises you are not sure you can keep Callie. » Arizona whispered before leaning forward brushing Callie's lips in a soft brief kiss, as tears rolled down her cheeks.
