A/N: I wish SO much that Grey's would have brought Tim back instead of Megan. Just my opinion.
Chapter 2
Mawali, Africa
Arizona Robbins had a love hate relationship with Africa. She loved the kids, the work, the difference she was making. But she hated the heat, the food, the uncomfortable living situation, and she hated that a certain brunette still invaded her dreams over 3 years later. She still kept the picture on her bedside table of the two of them. Callie has her hand on Arizona's forearm. She is laughing about who knows what. But her smile is pure magic. The look in Arizona's eyes shows nothing but love. They were at a party Alex Karev was throwing. They had been dating about a year. Callie was telling her about a patient that had injured himself in a sex swing accident. Arizona could hear that picture. Hear the hearty laugh that came from her girlfriend. She missed her. If she had a dollar for every time she thought about just packing up and going home, she could build 10 clinics throughout the world and retire. She had packed everything up as her three-year period was approaching and was ready to go back. But the surgeon who was going to take over had a heart attack. She agreed to stay one more year. She agreed to that 3 months ago. As much as she wanted to go home, she had already put three years into this. She had to assume Callie had moved on. She talked to Teddy every so often. But they agreed not to say anything about her. It was better this way.
Arizona was nursing a gross cup of coffee when her co-worker and fellow Carter Maddison grant winner, Dr. Jacobs came in with a weird look on his face.
"Morning Luke. Everything okay?" She smiled at him. Never her real smile. The only thing that could provoke that on this side of the world were the children she worked with.
"There is a call on the satellite phone for you. It sounds urgent." He extended his arm and the completely outdate phone that was reserved for emergencies and supply orders was thrust in her direction. She took it and watched as he left the room. Immediately thinking something had happened to her parents she took a deep breath and answered.
"Hello, this is Dr. Robbins."
Silence…
"Hello. This is Dr. Robbins. Can you hear me?" She spoke a bit louder. She had never had issues with reception on this monstrosity of a phone before.
Right as she was about to hand up she heard a voice that had only been in her dreams the last three years….
"Arizona…." No. It couldn't be.
"Calliope?" Arizona knew she had to be hallucinating.
"Arizona. Yeah, it's Callie." The sweet voice on the other end replied.
"Hey, how are you?" Arizona smiled. Completely forgetting that the only way she would be getting this call is if something was going on.
"Um. I really don't know how to say this." She stopped as she heard Callie nervously chuckle on the other end of the phone.
"Callie. What's going on?"
"Arizona, this morning I was paged about a John Doe that had stowed away on an Army cargo plane from Afghanistan. We operated and he is doing well. When he woke up when I saw his eyes. I knew… Arizona. It's Tim." Callie breathed out.
They sat in absolute silence for what felt like an eternity.
"Callie. You-how? How could you call me with THIS? You…you know he is dead. We buried him. You have to be mistaken." The pain of the day she lost her brother flooded her and she couldn't stop the tears from flowing.
"Arizona…sweetie." Arizona felt her body shiver at the term of endearment on the other line. The pure concern seeping from Callie's voice.
"Calliope…. how?" Arizona whispered.
"I talked to him. He told me his name is Timothy Daniel Robbins. Arizona I have seen pictures. He is a little banged up that was an understatement. But it is him….." Callie could hear Arizona sobbing on the other end of the phone.
"I-I need to come home. I don't I don't know what." Arizona was spiraling she needed to get to Washington. "My parents!" She yelled.
"I will call them. I will handle everything okay. Just talk to the people over there and the Carter Maddison committee. My Dad agreed to have his private jet come get you. It can be there tomorrow. It will grab your parents on the way back from you. Okay?" Callie was soothing the blonde. She could picture her right now. Clutching her shirt and on the verge of a full-on breakdown.
"I-thank you. Thank you, Callie. Can you tell him I am coming? Please?" Arizona sobbed.
"Of course. I will stay with him until you get here, okay?"
"Okay. Thank you again. Thank you so much."
Arizona heard the other line disconnect and dropped to her knees. How? How after 5 years? Where had he been the last 5 years? She recalled Callie's comment about him being a little banged up. What had happened to him? Stowaway in a cargo airplane? She steadied herself. She could go over every what if in the world, but one fact still remained. Her brother. Her BEST friend…he was alive. He was alive and she would be on an airplane to see him tomorrow!
She took off out of the office and immediately went to the headquarters of the clinic. She alerted her superiors who immediately told her they would handle everything. She didn't have time to deal with the administrative stuff. Quite frankly, she didn't care. She ran to her small apartment and packed quicker than she ever had before. Realizing the complete whirlwind, she was about to encounter she decided to try her best to lay down and get some rest. The next few days were going to be crazy, but she couldn't wait.
As she laid down and took a breath she was struck with the realization that she would be seeing Callie. She would be seeing the love of her life for the first time in three years. Not only that, but she sent her father's private jet to retrieve Arizona from AFRICA and her parents. That had to be expensive. How would she ever repay her? Even after she walked out on her and shattered her heart, she still did this for her. She didn't deserve Callie, she never had.
