A/N: I am going to try to alternate updates between this story and The Race. But I am currently in a flow with this one. Plus, the chapters here are a tad shorter. Like I said, don't get mad at me. I will finish The Race.
Chapter 3
Seattle, Washington
Callie had paged Mark and let him know she would have to monitor a few patients overnight. She wanted to tell him about Tim, but she didn't want anyone seeing him until Arizona and her parents had the chance. Tim was still fast asleep when her cellphone started ringing. She recognized the number immediately.
"Hi Barbara." Callie smiled at the older woman. She was always so good to Callie.
"Callie. Sweetie. I didn't wake you did I?"
"No. No I am just dosing. I am sitting in his room."
"Do you have an iPhone?" Barbara asked with hope seeping in her voice.
Callie already knew what the older woman wanted. Before she could ask Callie switched the phone to FaceTime. When the other side picked up, the woman on the other end smiled. It had been too long since Callie had seen her. She remembers the tight mother like hugs that Barbara gave and immediately missed her.
"Oh Callie. You look even more beautiful now then you did all those years ago." Barbara complimented.
"Oh stop. I am sleep deprived and look it. Here. I know why you asked about this." Callie took her phone and pointed it at Tim sleeping in his bed. She heard the gasp from Barbara and hear her yell "Daniel…Daniel! It's him!" She turned the phone back around just in time to see Daniel Robbins stern face look softer than it ever had.
"Hi Callie." He whispered.
"Hello, Colonel. Hold on one moment." She turned the camera back to Tim and heard the weeping coming from the other side. Callie felt like she was intruding so she quietly let the Robbins know she would give them a few moments. She put her phone down and headed to the bathroom.
Callie was mentally exhausted. The last 18 hours had been a blur. One minute she was making Sofia breakfast and the next she was sitting in the hospital room of Timothy Robbins. The brother of the love of her life. Not only that, the brother who everyone thought was dead. Pair that with the fact she heard Arizona's voice for the first time in 3 years, and Callie was holding on by a thread. Taking a deep breath and splashing some water on her face, she headed back out to her chair.
Callie had alerted Chief Webber to the situation and he told her to take some time off. He knew the history between Arizona and Callie. More importantly, he respected Dr. Arizona Robbins too much to have any issues with this sensitive situation. Only the most trusted people worked on this case and there were to be no leaks as to who this patient was. Seattle Grace was a gossip mill, but this was not to be used for anyone's entertainment.
As Callie made her way back out to the room she heard Daniel and Barbara talking to each other. It seemed they were coordinating some sort of long-term plan to stay in Seattle. She cleared her throat to alert them of her presence and took the phone back.
"The jet will be there to pick you both up tomorrow. Arizona will be on it, so she should be able to fill you in a bit more. I have sent copies of his scans and chart to her to review when she gets on the plane." Callie was nervous talking to the Robbins about their daughter. It was kind of awkward.
"Callie. You just have no idea how grateful we are to you. I don't know how I would have gotten in contact with Arizona and broken this news. The fact you personally reached out means the world to us. We still just love you so much." Barbara had tears in her eyes as she tried to convey to the brunette just how grateful she was for how she handled this situation.
"Callie. I am sorry for what Arizona did. But we are in your debt. You have been and always will be family." Daniel Robbins was a scary man. He kept his feelings close to his chest so Callie was touched by his words.
"I love you guys. No matter what happened with Arizona and me. I will be here with Tim. He has quite a few surgeries to go yet, then some intense physical therapy. But, if all goes as planned I am confident he can get back to almost 100%." Callie smiled at the relieved looks on their faces.
"Will he ever be able to operate again?" Barbara asked the million-dollar question.
Callie had known that Timothy was a surgeon. He and Arizona both went to Hopkins. Though he was 2 years older, Arizona's accelerated education had them graduating at the same time. Then, they completed their residency together. Arizona had noted how their plan was to try to get a job at the same hospital, he in trauma and her in peds, but he decided to join the Army. The Robbins were Marines but Tim always liked to push the envelope. He joined the Army and then was quicky shipped off to Afghanistan due to lack of doctors. Then one day a Black SUV pulled up to the Robbin's house and life was never the same. Callie still couldn't believe this man, one of only two Arizona ever loved, was lying close enough for her to touch.
"Based on everything Arizona has told me about Tim, he is a fighter. If he works hard I think he can get back in the OR. I will do absolutely everything in my power to make sure it happens." Callie made sure she didn't promise anything, but she was good. Honestly, she was the best and everyone knew it. But the nerve damage was severe.
"Thank you, Callie. Thank you." Both Robbins said. Wrapping up the call and noting they would see each other in the next few days, Callie laid back in her chair. Through all the chaos she had forgotten one key piece of information…. In the next 48 hours she was going to come face to face with Arizona for the first time in over 3 years. The thought made her nauseous. It was a combination of fear, nerves, and anticipation. She didn't expect to ever see the blonde again. But she was coming back. Not only coming back, but she was returning under the most insane circumstances. This was going to be interesting.
As she started to dose off in the chair next to Tim's bed she heard the body next to her shift. When she opened her eyes to make sure he was okay, she was met with the crystal blue clones of Arizona's
"Hi" Tim croaked out.
Callie stood up and grabbed him some water. She held it to his mouth and encouraged him to take small sips.
"Thank you." He smiled at her. Just like his sister, his dimples were a killer.
"Nice to see you awake." She sat back down and tried to calm her nerves.
"Nice to be awake…in a bed." He looked around the room trying to figure out where exactly he was.
"You are at Seattle Grace in Seattle, Washington. You were brought in earlier today. Apparently a stowaway on an Army cargo plane." Callie filled in the gaps. She watched as Tim assessed his body. As his eyes looked at his hands, one casted and the other currently casted and elevated, she saw what could only be described as fear cross his face.
"My hands…" He stated in a defeated tone. "Shit…my hands.
"I can fix them." Callie confidently responded.
"Can I see the scans?" Slipping into doctor mode.
"Of course." Callie opened the tablet that laid on the bedside table and flipped through the chart as he read it. She watched his face crinkle in the same way Arizona's does when she is focusing. The similarities between the two made this interaction almost painful.
"You can't fix my hands." He responded after a few minutes.
"You don't know me." She replied. "I am very good at what I do."
"I figured. Arizona doesn't date anyone who isn't the best." He chuckled at the horrified look on Callie's face.
"How-how. Wait what?" She asked.
"You knew about me…. Once I joined the service I know she shut down. She does that. I can't imagine what she must have thought when I went MIA for as long as I did. The only way you could know about me is if she cared about you. So…tell me. Where is she?"
"Africa." Callie quickly replied.
"What the hell is she doing in Africa?" Tim laughed. Typical Arizona.
"Well. She worked here for about a year and a half. Then she won the Carter Madison Grant. She went to Africa and runs a pediatric clinic over there." Callie couldn't stop the mixture of hurt and pride in her voice.
"Of course, she did. Always had to be the showoff." She could tell his pain meds were wearing off.
"Does she know?"
"Yeah. She is headed here now. Your parents too. Should be here in a day or so. I am here until then." Callie laid her hand on his thigh.
"Do you, um. Do you have a photo of her? The one I had is so worn. I haven't seen her or my parents clearly in a while."
"Uhh. I – I do. Hold on." Callie pulled out her phone and went to a folder she hasn't opened in a while. She scrolled until she found what she was looking for. It was a photo of her along with Arizona, Barbara, and Daniel Robbins. It was taken when the Robbins family visited Seattle. They are on Derek Shepard's land overlooking the city. She handed the phone over to him and he gasped.
"You met my parents?" He looked at her shocked.
"Uh. Yeah." Callie felt a bit put on the spot. She watched as Tim lifted his left casted hand and gently touched the phone. Tears soon started to run down his face at seeing his family so clearly for the first time in forever.
"She looks happy." He smiled.
"She was." Was all Callie could say. Because they were. They were SO happy. But then Africa came and ruined it all.
"What happened between you two? If you met my parents, she had to have loved you." Tim was truly curious. Arizona didn't bring people home. She was a love them and leave them kind of girl.
"That um. That isn't my story to tell."
"She has always been a fool. Dr. Torres. She is my best friend, basically my twin, and my sister. But she is stubborn" He smiled at her. Then moved his eyes towards her badge. She heard him grimace in pain.
"You can call me Callie." Callie walked around his bed and adjusted his pain meds. Get some rest Tim. Your family will be here soon. She covered him up and watched as he closed his eyes. She gently brushed her hands through his blonde hair just like Arizona liked when she was sick. Get some rest, Timmy. They will be here soon.
