Thursday

"Hey, we still on for this evening?" Callie asked Arizona on the corridor to first period class, as if trying her best to completely disregard a certain conversation.

They didn't get a chance to talk properly since Tuesday's lunch except for a quick "hi and bye" in passing on the corridor, given that Callie chose to help the football team with practice at lunch on Wednesday rather than after school like normal.

"Yup, we are." she said. "Didn't see much of you yesterday." Arizona figured she, or rather the conversation they should have was being avoided.

"Yeah, I was helping the football team." Callie rubbed the back of her neck nervously.

"I know." Arizona replied blithely. "I went looking when I didn't see you."

"Sorry about that, it got called last minute and I thought I'd just help out." Although true that she was willing to help, it was only an excuse to postpone an opportunity at the discussion she wasn't looking forward to having.

"Well are you going to join me for lunch today then?"

"I can't, extra practice again. But you'll see me this evening for sure. I should go, I'll see you later." Callie wasn't enjoying making excuses to blonde she was developing more and more affection for, but she promised herself she'd make an effort to answer any questions.

"Okay bye." the English teacher called after her before she was out of earshot.

Arizona watched as she had a seemingly lively conversation with someone else from the group at the library.

"Ok, it was nice talking to you." Callie said to the stranger, walking over to where Arizona stood. "That was a pretty good book. I think I'd buy it."

"Yeah, I liked it too." They walked out of the library to their cars.

Callie could tell gears were turning as Arizona prepared to speak again when they made it to her car.

"So are we going to talk about the conversation that has been being put off?" Arizona said letting Callie know she noticed the attempts she made.

"It was obvious?" Callie thought. "I guess we're going to have it now?" she asked nervously.

Arizona gestured for her to open the car door and get in so they could talk.

When they got in Arizona faced her completely in the seat. "Where were we?" her brain going blank on all the questions that were circling her head just a few moments ago since Tuesday.

"What do you want to know?"

Arizona cleared her throat before answering. "Um... what did you say the medication was called?"

"Amaryl." she gave simply.

Arizona nodded rubbing the thighs of her jeans up and down. "What are they for?" she wanted to hear it from Callie although she was tempted a few times to research it.

Callie breathed deeply. "I have type 2 diabetes, they help to lower my blood sugar."

"How long have you had it?" the blonde asked calmly.

"I started having symptoms a couple months before my 16th birthday, but I just brushed it off until they started getting more noticeable. My Tìa got worried and finally took me to the doctor when my vision got so blurry I was walking into things and knocking stuff over all around the house. I think she thought I just needed glasses at first." Callie supplied.

"So what caused it?"

Callie released a sigh thinking back to 11th grade. "Diabetes is when the pancreas either doesn't produce enough insulin or it doesn't use the insulin well, but your lifestyle can affect it or make it worse. I was overweight for my age, not excessively but.. yeah, and my diet wasn't the best so that probably played a role too I guess."

"Why were you hiding it from me? Why didn't you mention it before?" that was the part she couldn't wrap her head around.

"You didn't ask."

The statement got back a snappy reply. "How would I have known to ask questions about something you never brought up, Callie? Would have just never said anything if I didn't see anything?" she truly was trying to understand.

Callie sighed again. "It isn't something I like talking about as a topic of conversation. I swear I wasn't keeping it a secret, it just never came up."

"Is that the only medication you're on?"

"For now yeah, but my doctor is considering trying other things."

At the mention of the doctor Arizona remembered. "That's what all those doctor's appointments were?"

Callie nodded.

"You just kept saying they were nothing out of the ordinary! That counts as coming up." Arizona's voice raised.

"It wasn't out of the ordinary." the nonchalant tone she was using annoying Arizona more. "They were just check ups."

"You're treating this like it's no big deal."

"Because it isn't! You don't want to be with me anymore because it wasn't the first thing coming out of mouth when we first spoke?"

"I didn't say that." Arizona said sternly. "My problem is that it seems like I would've never know if I hadn't seen your pills. We've been seeing each other for basically two months now, why couldn't you mention that?"

"I'm sorry."

Arizona took a deep breath to go back to calm. "I don't know much about diabetes."

"That's fine, I'll answer any questions you have." Callie said quickly.

"Was that what the first day we met was about? Something related to the diabetes?"

"My blood sugar was low."

Arizona sigh still a little frustrated. "See, there was another opportunity to say something."

"We didn't know one another then, you were just the new English teacher."

Arizona bit her tongue to control raising her voice again. "I brought up seeing you that day in the room since we started dating and you never told me what it was actually about."

"I know, I just... I just didn't really want to have to talk about it. I usually don't tell people unless I have to or they ask."

"Does it happen often? The low blood sugar?"

"Usually it would be high, but the medication I'm on makes it off balance sometimes and it ends up lowering to much."

"How low is low? Mild or...?"

"Most of the time mild, it only got dangerously low once, that's around when I first started taking it."

"And what about when it's too high? How bad does it get then?" the blonde asked curiously.

"I've been to hospital a few times, the exercise and grass usually helps me stay relatively healthy though." Callie joked to lighten the mode, she got a lot of teasing from Arizona for what she ate, the blonde usually referred to her salads as grass.

When Callie realised she didn't get the laugh she expected from the joke, her laughing died.

For a moment blue eyes just sat staring without any words.

"Would you be my girlfriend?" was what came out when she opened her mouth.

Author's Note *

Honestly I stopped it there because I'm trying to decide whether I'm ready to make them a couple officially or if I want them to date for just a little longer or If I could time jump a week or two ahead. I have a lot of ideas floating around in my mind, maybe some of your opinions may help.

But I'll figure it out by next chapter.

It was another short one but the next update will be longer.
