Callie was sitting in the resident's locker room, lost in the thoughts of certain Blonde when Cristina came barging in.
"You missed the mind-blowing surgery," Cristina said dropping on the couch." where were you?"
"Huh?" Callie said coming out of her daze.
"I asked where you were… you missed the reattaching of fingers," Cristina asked again.
"Oh…I … umm… I was attending a patient… another FBI agent… by the way, the one who… um… brought the fingers" Callie replied blushing slightly at the thought of Arizona, which went unnoticed by Cristina.
"Was it surgical?" Cristina asked curiously
"Umm… no she had shoulder dislocation, some cuts and bruises and head lac… nothing major" Callie replied
"You missed a surgery for head lac and shoulder dislocation?" Cristina asked with wide eyes "an intern could have done that"
"well… yeah" Not knowing what to reply, Callie just shrugged.
Cristina didn't press the subject and went ahead to tell how Hunt worked on reattaching the bones and shepherd worked on nerves. For another 15 minutes, Cristina went on telling the process in detail to which Callie just replied with a few "hmm" and "oh" now and then as she was not as invested in the story as Cristina was.
Since the moment Callie had met the blonde, she has been lost in her thoughts. Reliving their interaction, thinking about those blue eyes and the smooth talks. It has been a few hours since Arizona has left the hospital, but Callie has found herself smiling unnecessarily on more than one occasion. The lack of any further cases at the hospital didn't help the matter as well.
After the shift, Callie went to her apartment across from the hospital which she shared with Cristina. slumping on the bed after changing, Callie opened her Phone and checked her social media for some time. She was watching some video when her mind got diverted to the blonde again and she decided to Google her. To her surprise there was very little she found on google. There was one Facebook profile that seems to be made at least 10 years ago and there wasn't much in that other than her birthdate which was 1st March.
"Who does not have social media nowadays," Callie thought and felt a little disappointed that she could find anything more about the subject of her thoughts. She thought of sending a message to Arizona but decided against it thinking it is too soon. After a while, the exhaustion of the day caught on to her and she succumbed to sleep.
…
The next day Callie woke up with a start, she glanced at the clock and realized that she was getting late. She quickly got dressed stumbling on the shoes from last night and ran past Cristina for her shift. She assisted a few surgeries with hunt and shepherd and finished her load of paperwork and for the first time since yesterday, she did not think of the Blonde.
She had just entered the cafeteria to grab a lunch when her eyes fell on the head of blonde hairs standing in the cue for payment. The moment she caught the glimpse of blonde hair her heart started to beat fast; her face automatically formed a smile. Callie was usually a confident woman but since the day she met the hot blonde with blue eyes, she was a nervous mess. She took a few quick breaths before going confidently towards the object of her desire. She went near her and leaned in, to whisper in her ears. "Seems like wishes do come true… else you won't be here"
The blonde turned around in confusion
"Ah… fuck" Callie all but shouted, looking at the blonde's which wasn't her blonde, face "Erica… Hi … shit… I am sorry"
"Did you just use a pick-up line?" Erica asked in shock
"Ah... well… no… I mean… I thought..." Callie stuttered.
"You were trying to hit on me because you thought I was someone else," Erica asked with raised
"Na… umm… yup… yup," Callie said defeatedly
"you know what… forget it… do whatever you want Callie" Erica spat and left.
Happy to see that not many people hear their awkward conversation Callie turned around to leave but her happiness was short-lived because she saw Arizona sitting on the table nearby, looking at her with interest. By the looks at the smirk she was giving to Callie it was clear that she heard everything. Mortified Callie dragged her feet towards her and stood in front of Arizona's table "please tell me you did see that" Callie said scrunched her nose, peeking one eye open.
"See what? That you try to hit on that woman thinking, I am hoping, me and got turned down" Arizona said mischievously "Nah! I didn't see that".
Callie dropped down on the seat in front of Her and put her face in her hands "Arrgghh!... why?" she wined.
Arizona tried very hard to stifle her laugh and said, "did you really just use that cheesy pickup line?"
"Oh god… you heard that too?" Callie said rubbing the palm on her face "you know what? It's not even the worst part…," Callie said whining.
"It is not," Arizona asked laughing
"no... the worst part is… she is my ex"
"Oh," Arizona said with wide eyes "I … am…that's … that's bad"
"How come you didn't recognize her from the back" Arizona questioned
"I don't know… I guess I wasn't even thinking about the possibility of her standing there… I was more focused on… ahem…" Callie tried to explain but didn't finish her sentence.
"…Focused on the possibility of Me being there?" Arizona teased
Callie smacked her forehead down on the table lightly "oh, I am doing so well today!…why it has to happen to me… in front of you no less"
Arizona looked at Callie in surprise "You care what I think?" and just like that Callie got nervous for whole another reason.
"well yeah…I mean after yesterday… I" she said shyly
"Oh, that means yesterday did happen… I didn't make it up in my mind" Arizona sounded genuinely relieved.
"You… you don't remember," Callie said sounding a little hurt.
"Oh no no… I do… I do remember me flirting with you and giving you my card… good to know that it was true, and it wasn't the result of my head injury" Arizona said pointing at the bandage.
Callie didn't say anything but smiled a little.
"Hey," Arizona said putting a gentle hand on Callie which immediately shot a bolt of lightning to both of their bodies "I am glad that it was true that I met you… because let's be honest… it was too good to be true"
This brought the smile back on Callie's face "you Agent Robbin's are Smooth"
"Well…yeah…I am awesome!" Arizona replied in a matter-of-fact tone
"And humble too…" Callie replied shaking her head.
"I couldn't stop thinking about you last night," Arizona said after a few seconds which made Callie blush.
"Even though I slept almost as soon as lay down… because of the medicine you prescribed… but that whole 10 minutes I was awake… I was thinking about you." Arizona replied putting one hand on her heart, showing the truth in her words "I swear".
Callie laughed loudly at this; she could help but think how easy it was to be with this person "she is such a sweet, kind person and definitely a smooth flirt."
"I never got your message," Arizona said when Callie didn't speak for a while
"Huh?" Calli said coming out of her daze. "oh… message… yeah late-night… work… ahem"
"Oookay" Arizona replied nodding but didn't say anything further. They both looked awkwardly towards each other for a few seconds
"Ahem... well… how's your hand and leg and everything else," Callie asked
"When I woke up this morning, I felt like I was run over by a truck but after some time I felt fine" Arizona replied.
"So, you took the medicine after getting home but not when I was fixing your shoulder?" Callie asked curiously
"For one… what you prescribed were general painkillers and what you were going to give me was morphine… which makes me extremely stupid, and I DID NOT want to behave like an idiot in front of you" Arizona explained
"Seriously? You didn't take the morphine just so that I don't see your goofy phase?" Callie asked in surprised
"Of course… you know you only get one chance for the first impression," Arizona said bouncing eyebrows and smirking.
"Well in that case I have to say that it indeed was a great first impression" Callie flirted back.
They both were loving their little game of harmless flirting. There was a definite attraction between them and both were aware of that, but instead of straight out asking each other out they were enjoying the little dance they were doing with their flirtation. They stayed there for some time, talking until Callie pager indicated the end of their time.
"I… need to run," Callie said unable to hide her disappointment
"Oh… sure" Arizona replied sounding equally disappointed "I guess I have to wait for your message"
"I guess yeah" Callie smiled "See you later I hope"
"Most definitely Dr Torres" Arizona replied popping her dimples.
Callie just smiled at the effect of Arizona dimple had on her but didn't voice it out. With a final goodbye, she left for the consult.
Arizona went to check up on her teammates, after having a quick checking up on Agent Anderson and William, she popped into Alex Karev room who was since been transferred to the normal ward.
Alex was Arizona's go-to guy, her second in command, her partner, basically her right hand. They always had each other back no matter what. They have been working together for over 3 years now and they knew each other moves even before they make it. Therefore, when the accident happen, Arizona was scared to death of losing Karev. Losing Karev would mean losing her sibling and she was not ready for that. It's not like Arizona didn't care about her other teammates she was a great Boss and always cared about her team, but Karev condition was more critical than the other two and to be honest, they go way back. When you are in a job like that losing your partner is like losing half of yourself. No matter how much they are being trained for such hostility, it gets to them now and then.
"Sup? Grumper" Arizona said calling him with her nickname for her.
"Hey, boss… ssup?" Alex chimed in eating her hospital provided Jell-O
"Please tell me you are eating something more than this Jell-O?" Arizona said sitting next to Alex's bed.
"It is the only thing edible here… no wonder nobody wants to be in the hospital," Alex said rolling his eyes.
"Sure, that's the reason and not the sickness and death that surrounds the hospital" Arizona replied sarcastically
"Death surrounds us too but there's no place I'll rather be than that rickety Car of yours, driving around the street catching bad guys," Alex said "I am telling you it's the food"
Arizona laughed at his reply. At first, when Alex joined her team, he used to stay quiet and serious which clashed instantly with Blonde's cheerful nature and that is why Alex was given the name "Grumper". Jo was "Gizmo" as she was their tech expert and Anderson was "cupcakes" because he was white as snow but always had a red nose which reminded Arizona of a Vanilla cupcake with a cherry on the top. These names were allotted by Arizona on the first they she met her team; they returned the favour and gave Arizona "McDimples" as a nickname. This was their internal joke and nobody else in the FBI knew about it as when it comes to work, this was the best team that Seattle's national Security Branch has ever seen. They were meticulous, brave, and fierce, they respected each other and the coordination between the team was impeccable.
"How are you… honestly" Arizona asked in all seriousness
"Honestly… I am fine… My only concern is my hand" Alex replied calmly "but they told me with good PT I will be good as new" Alex replied.
"Okay... I guess then…" Arizona said looking mischievously toward Alex "…Finger crossed…" she added, unable to stop herself from teasing him.
"Ha Ha, very mature Robbins," Alex said in mock anger "Make fun of the maimed guy" he added but he could help but smile along with Arizona.
"Jokes apart… you scared me there for a while," Arizona said sadly "I don't where we went wrong, our intel was so clear the location was correct the house was right… but it was cleaned out, like spotless clean...like somebody already informed them that we were coming" Arizona said wondering
"I know… I was confused too… something is missing but I don't seem to put…" Alex said raising her injured hand "my finger on it"
The reaction was instant, both let out the bawl of laughter. Maybe it was due to the painkillers they were taking or their newfound love for life after their near-death experience. Whatever it was, they both were laughing their ass off making very bad and inappropriate finger puns.
Callie had just finished her consultation and was now doing Cristina's post-op as it was her day off. After checking a few patients, she went to the room where Alex was admitted. Just as she reached for the doorknob, she was met by the loud laughing noise. Confused by the sound of laughter, she entered the room and looked at the scene in front of her with wide eyes.
Arizona and Alex were clutching their stomach and were in tears because of how much they were laughing. So much so they didn't even hear Callie enter.
"Ahem," Callie said clearing her throat.
Alex and Arizona looked towards the sound with teary eyes and tried to somber up at the sight of the doctor.
Arizona looked at Callie and gave a big smile and greeted her "Dr Torres…".
"Agent Robbins" Callie replied with an equally big smile and nodded "Okay… so Mr Karev" Callie said taking eyes off Arizona and focusing on the patient.
After checking his incisions and noting down the vitals Callie asked "are you facing any issue, and shortness of breath or any other discomfort you are feeling?"
"Well, Doctor… I got my finger cut off of my left hand…" Alex began to speak seriously "On the other hand everything is fine" and with that just like before Alex and Arizona fell back in to pit of laughter. Hi fiving each other with their good hands.
Callie was looking at them dumbstruck, unable to understand the scene in front of her. Even after a few moments when they didn't stop laughing Callie finally asked, "Are you guys high!"
They looked at Callie and shook their head in 'no'. Unconvinced by their answer Callie went near Arizona and asked in horror "Arizona! Did you give him something… you know…"
"What!? Callie… no" Arizona replied trying to stifle her laugh but failing miserably.
"Then why are you two laughing so much," She asked in confusion.
"It's just" Arizona tried to explain catching her breath "after yesterday… it felt nice to laugh"
Callie smiled in understanding "Okay then I leave you two to catch up or you know make more jokes about Fingers… See you guys later"
"By calliope…" Arizona said with a dimpled smile.
"By Arizona…" She replied and left the room.
After Callie was gone Alex turned towards Arizona "Calliope?... since when are you and Dr Torres on a first-name basis?"
"Since yesterday," Arizona replied shyly
"YESTERDAY!" Alex exclaimed, "You mean I was fighting for my life, and you were flirting with McHottie?"
"Calm down, it's nothing like that… she fixed me up and we talked… well... flirted and then I gave her my number… and now… I am waiting for her to make a move and message me" Arizona explained
"Damn! Robbins you are fast" Alex said impressed on which Arizona just Shrugged.
"But seriously, thank you for saving my hand, Boss," Alex said in seriousness, "Doctors told me that it was you brought the fingers"
"Common on! It's no big deal" Arizona said dismissively
"It is Boss, nobody would have searched for my finger in that ruckus… I own you one… a big one" Alex said gratefully
Arizona smiled and put her hand on Alex's shoulder "don't go soft on me grumper… else I will have to rename you to Mc Softy"
"Neah… I like grumper better" Alex said smiling "How are you feeling… you are looking pretty banged yourself"
"Pff! I am fine" Arizona replied "2 Weeks of rest and I'll be back"
"Hmm, and how jo-… ahem… Wilson" Alex asked acting nonchalant
"Huh! She'll survive" Arizona said smirking and looking at Alex with squinted eyes.
"Good… good… good" Alex said still acting cool.
"You know Anderson got shot too," Arizona said teasingly "but I guess you don't want to know about him… huh?"
"What… no of course I do…" Alex said stammering "How is he … is he good… well... huh?
Arizona laughed loudly "you are never going to man up and ask her out, are you?" she asked
"What are you talking about… I am asking about Anderson" Alex replied avoiding her gaze.
"Mmhmm… Anderson is fine as well" Arizona said nodding
"That's good," Alex said with a shy smile.
"Well, I'll leave you to take rest… and get back soon," Arizona said standing up
"Ok boss, get well soon too… see ya around," Alex said
Just before Arizona was about to open the door she turned around and said "You got your fingers cut on duty"
Alex looked at her in confusion and nodded "hmm hmm"
"I suppose you'll get your severance pay now," Arizona said before bursting out laughing which was followed by Karev.
After her hospital visit, Arizona ran some of her errands, came back home, changed into her casual wear, and lie down on the bed. She was about to fall into sleep when her phone chimed from the side table, she reluctantly picked up the phone and clicked on the notification bar.
Hi, it's Callie… making my move by texting you. Now it's your turn
Arizona sat up on the bed in excitement and then winced as pain shot up her body. Ignoring the burning sensation in her shoulder she quickly typed the reply
Arizona: How have you gone so long without messaging me? I'm such a delight.
Callie: and oh so modest!
Arizona: it's hard to be humble when you are this awesome.
Callie: you think very highly of yourself Agent Robbins
Arizona: Am I wrong Dr Torres.
Callie: well… I guess not.
Arizona: Be honest. How long have you been waiting for a text from me?
Callie: I was going to wait another day or two to text you, but I can't wait that long to talk to you.
Arizona: thank God for that, because one more day and I would have gone crazy.
Callie: Really? … well we can't have you going crazy now can we?.. so here I am texting you… for your mental health
Arizona: Thank you so much Dr Torres… my knight and shining whatever
Callie: Ha ha ha… well I did my part… ball in your court again.
They both stopped for some time, thinking, and rethinking what to say. After a while, Arizona decided to throw caution at the wind and replied
Arizona: Since you made the first move when it comes to texting, so here I am making the first move and asking you out. Would you like to go on a date with me?
Callie: I would love to
Arizona: Awesome! Friday at 6?
Callie: perfect!
Arizona: Done, now sleep well Calliope… and I will try not to think about you too much
Callie: don't try too hard… ? … Good night!
Arizona: Good night!
And with that, both women went to sleep with a smile on their faces.
