It was Charlies first day at a new school. School started a week ago but Callie thought she would be less anxious going on the second week. WRONG. Everyone already knows everyone. And all the new kids got to met people and get there new friends now there's cliques. Cliques that she wasn't a part of,
cliques that will be harder to get into. HUMPH. Why couldn't she have started like all the other kid. She thought to herself as Callie pulled into the parking lot of Tubman High School, "home of the bulldogs"or at least that's what the sign says.
"Have a nice day at school Charlie either Zona or me or Alex with pick you up ok," Callie told Charlie looking at them through the rear view mirror.
"Alright bye," Charlie said before hopping out of the car.
Callie ended up dropping her off a bit late so she had to visit the office.
"Um I'm a new student here," said Charlie, greeting the women behind the desk.
"Name," the women asked in a snarky voice
"Charlie Rogers," charlie whisper with a nervous tone
"The principal wants to see you in her office. It might take a moment for her to get in but I'll let her know your there. The office is just right down the hall," the lady told charlie looking at the computer screen
Charlie slowly walked down the hallway stopping at each door to make sure she hadn't passed the door. Once she made it to a door that said principal office she juggles the knob then pushed the door open. She saw no one was in the room so she sat down on the other side of the desk. A few minutes later a tall Afro- Latina women in her 40s
"Hi," the women greeting her paused "Charlotte how are you," she said looking at the paper
"I'm good how about your self," Charlie said putting on her best fake smile
"I'm great, well I don't have anything for you, I just wanted to introduce myself to you but student lead should be down here in a moment to give you a tour of the school," said Principal Garcia before leavening the office.
She waited patiently, tapping the desk her taps matched the rhythm of her heart. She paused, contemplating taking out her phone but then She heard a voice.
"Hi my name Gab I'm the student lead here to give a tour," they said. "What's your pronouns by the way," they asked her?
"Umm she/her maybe, I don't know no ones every asked me that, I just go with default," Charlie said
"Ok which ones are you more comfy with," they asked again?
"Well when you put it like that she/they I guess," I let them know before getting up out of the chair.
"Well my pronouns are they/he and I'm a sophomore. You ready for the tour,"they asked holding the office door open?
"Yeah I guess," Charlie said standing up.
"You got your schedule," Gab asked as they strolled through the hallway?
I shake my head.
"Cool we'll just visit Miss. Pat before we go on the tour," He said looking back at them.
They left the out same long hall I came in.
"Hey Miss Pat can we get," they pause waiting for a name.
"Charlie Rogers," I say.
"Charlie Rogers schedule," they ask for me.
"Sure can do," she says with our look up from the computer. "Well looks like we don't have a Charlie but we do have a,"she pauses and looks up at Gab,"ohhh never mind coming right up,"
"Thanks miss pat," gab says with a fake smile headed towards the printer near the door.
We wait for the printer to print and quickly move out of the office.
"Sometime miss pat can be less aware but she's a really cool chick," gab tells me before looking at the schedule.
"We have almost every class except 3rd hour," gab says wow you're taking 11th grade math impressive," they say.
"So is algebra 2 really hard," they asked?
"No it's just algebra 1 but more in-depth," Charlie answered.
"Oh," they say leaving a slight pause.
"Well Ms Hernandez ,which is English, is going on right now, next period Ms Johnson is Biology, then Mr Smith is Geometry. Monsieur Hall is fourth hour then lunch I like to eat in my car I can't go off campus yet,"They throw that little detail in.
"Then we have health and choir ."
They was a pause in they speech.
"Do you wanna walk around for a while," they asked gathering themself.
"Yea I guess," Charlie answered.
"I only asked cuz I kinda don't want to go to class," they said with a smirk.
"Oh," They said with an even bigger smirk.
"Mr. Hernandez is pretty cool tho but I just don't like the people in the class," he told them.
"Oh, who is it, just so I know who to avoid," Charlie asked them?
"The HBIC at the school is Rain Ziegler she's a junior and this is her second time taking tenth grade english," Gab let her know.
"I don't even believe Rain has a brain she about as smart as a rock," they said as Charlie let out a chuckle.
"Don't get me wrong she's really hot but she asked me what pronouns where when I first meet her," they added.
At this point Charlie was full on belly laughing and Gab joined them. But the fun was interrupted when a teacher stuck there head out of there door told them to shush. Which made them laugh even harder as they walked the halls.
Once we calm down they asked "You wanna skip today?"
"Yeah sure as long as we take your truck," Charlie told them
"Of course Gab doesn't walk in cold weather," they said earning a little chuckle from Charlie.
"First off never talk about yourself in third person again and second it's not that cold," Charlie said.
"It's pretty cold out," he argues.
"Um not it's," they said with a hint of sarcasm in their voice
"It totally is but, let's get out of here before someone realize what we're up to," they said looking around to make sure no one saw them.
Once they get out side and the breeze sends a slight shiver down Charlie spine.
"Told you so ,"they whisper in Charlies ear.
"Is the truck yours," They asked when they saw the lights go off.
"No the blue one next to it is mine"
Before Gab could finish the sentence they were basically running to his car. He followed behind them.
"Woah slow down race horse I got the key," they joked holding the keys as they open the doors.
When they hop into the car you realize they've had no backpack this whole time.
"Where's your backpack," They ask?
"I leaved it in my truck," Gab said " I had a feeling I'd be skipping"
"Oh so is this a habitual thing, am I hanging out with Tubman high school premier bad boy," Charlie joked.
"No it's not but, when they called me into the office for the tour I planned on skipping after the tour but, you seem super cool so I invited you," Gab tells me as they turn out of the school parking lot.
For the next few minutes is quite until Gab breaks the silence "we're here"
Charlie hopped out the truck leaving their back pack inside it.
"So is this where Gab the bad boy skips,"Charlie joked.
"Firstly I don't skip and second no it's where me and my mom go for meditation, it's really quite here," they let Charlie know.
They lead the way as they find a spot to sit. They finally settle on sitting under a tree. You take a see next to them.
"You're right it is quiet,"Charlie said admiring the clouds in the sky.
"Yea today is kind of a rough day for me," Gab said with a somber tone.
"You wanna talk about?" Charlie offered.
"Nah I'm good," Gab said while taking something out of their bag.
"You draw," Charlie asked after noticing the sketch book.
"Yeah, do you?" Gab said putting what ever they were originally getting away for their sketchbook.
"No I paint but can I see," Charlie gestured to the book.
"Sure," Gab said with a smile handing over the book.
Charlie flip through the book with an intriguing look on her face.
"I just meet you so you're gonna have to tell me what that face mean," Gab said.
"It means I love it," Charlie said hugging them.
"Oh," Gab stunned by the physical contact eventually returning the gesture.
"Sorry," Charlie recoiling after Gab let go.
"No it cool. I've never seen anyone react to my art in such a way. It made me feel special. ," Gab said smiling.
"You're welcome Charlie said before pulling out a book.
The sag in silence with sounds of nature filling in the void.
"Can I draw you, drawing the same place gets boring," gab asked.
"Umm sure," Charlie said tucking there hair behind there ear with a blush
"I'm sorry if this is awkward," Gab said looking down at the paper.
Charlie continued to read the book in their hand on occasion slipping a glance at Gab.
"Um I'm done you wanna see it," Gab offered.
"Yea sure," Charlie said closing the book
"This is beautiful you flatter me," Charlie said.
"I just drew what I saw," Gab said honestly.
"Yeah but this is breathtaking," Charlie said looking at the drawing.
"So are you," gab said.
"So do you draw everyone them smooth talk them," Charlie asked?
"No only cute people," Charlie joked.
"Oh my gosh you are so corny," Charlie said chuckling.
"No I'm smooth," gab said laughing along.
"What time is it," Charlie asked after the laughter died down.
"Um 11:40," gab said looking at their watch.
"I think we should go back to school," Charlie said.
"Why ," gab asked
"Cuz I'm hungry and have no money," Charlie said.
"Come on," gab said grabbing Charlie's arm.
"Where are you taking me," charlie asked confused.
"You'll see," gab said leading them to the truck
"Ok," charlie mumbled.
They pulled up to a small quiet burger joint.
"This is the spot," gab said unbuckling.
"I've never been," charlie said.
"You must be new here because this is staple Seattle," charlie said walking into the restaurant.
"Naw I've been here for 5 years just never got out much," Charlie lied. Well she had been there for 5 years.
"What's good," Charlie asked studying the menu.
"Well I'd say the burgers or the fries cuz it's the only thing on the menu," gab said.
"Hahaha very funny," Charlie said walking up to the line
"vegan burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle and special sauce," gab said.
"The lady with you," the man behind the counter asked
"Their with me,"Charlie said pulling out their wallet.
"I'll have the same thing but non vegan," Charlie said.
"Are you always this good with your words," gab joked.
It earned a smirk from Charlie.
"Here's your money," Charlie said holding out 5 dollars.
"Keep it I got it this time," gab said
"You said this time," Charlie said
"Yeah and next time you'll get it," gab said waiting for their food.
"You said that like where one a date," Charlie said oblivious.
"Oh, ohh," Charlie said after looking at gab.
"Do you want this to be a date," gab. Asked
"No do you want this to be a date," Charlie asked back.
"Only if you want too," gab said.
"I only want to it you want to," Charlie said.
"I want too," gab said
"Well then I want to too," Charlie said.
"Order 43," the man yelled
"That's us," gab said grabbing the bag,
They went back to gabs truck and went back to the park to eat.
"I haven't had a burger this good in a while," Charlie said with a mouth full of burger.
"It's that good huh?" Gab said looking at them.
"This buss," Charlie said.
"Ok," gab chuckled.
After they finished eating.
"I come here and I just draw clouds for hours and hours but it was fun drawing you today," gab said.
"You're welcome," Charlie said confused.
"I'm serious it was nice it was beautiful it was a real challenge," gab said.
"Ok ," Charlie said laying of the grass a pool of curly behind her.
"Are you like this with everyone or am I special," gab asked sliding closing to the tree and subsequently closer to Charlie.
"No your special," Charlie said moving closer to gab.
Charlie didn't under stand why they felt this way. They had just met Gab and they opened up to them more than they even opened up to Callie and they havent even said anything about themself. They never believed in love at first site but with Gab they finally felt understood. They knew it was love but it was something deeper. Had they just found their soulmate because it sure did feel like it.
"You're think to hard it's throwing off my reading," gab said.
Charlie didn't even notice Gab went into their bag and their book. They were to engrossed in there own thoughts.
"Am not," Charlie argued.
"Are too," gab teased.
"Am not," Charlie said.
"Come here," gab offered his shoulder.
"Um ok," Charlie said swallowing the butterflies that made their way to their esophagus.
"So what's heavy on your mind," gab asked.
"Have you ever meet someone and it just clicked," Charlie asked.
"Yeah, why," gab asked closing the book.
"Oh just cuz," Charlie said looking at the book cover.
"Ok, you know we can talk," gab said.
"No I don't I just meet you," Charlie said.
"But we can still talk,"gab said
"No we can't what if you're some stalker serial killer," Charlie said.
"If I was a serial killer you would've been dead," gab said opening the book back up.
Charlie continued to rest their head on Gab shoulder. It was like they known each other forever. It was like their hearts were connected.
Charlie ended up dozing off while Gab read Charlie's book.
"Shit shut shit shit shit," Charlie mumbled.
Gab realized Charlie awoke
"Charlie," Callie yelled across the field.
Charlie tried to burrow themself in Gabs arm like a baby.
"Who's that," gab asked.
"Just ignore her," Charlie told them.
"Charlie I just got a call from the school saying you skipped on your first day," Arizona yelled once she made it over.
"Calm down," the brunette said as she finally made it down the hill.
"I was worried sick," Arizona said.
"I'm sorry," is all Charlie could mutter.
"It's totally my fault," Gab spoke up. "I asked them to skip school with me."
"Yeah but charlie knows right from wrong," Arizona said finally calmed down.
"Come on let's go," callie said.
"Um bye I'm sorry you got in trouble here your book and you left something in my truck," gab said to them after they got up.
"Just give it to me tomorrow," Charlie said before following Arizona and callie to the car.
"I can not believe you," Arizona said getting in the passenger seat.
"Arizona relax," callie said adjusting the rear view mirror.
"I thought you were so studious well you have me fooled," Arizona continued.
"Arizona,"callie said.
"What maybe she can read a book on how to not skip school," Arizona said. This was the last straw.
"And maybe you can stop acting like my parents when you're nothing but some glorified babysitters," Charlie said.
"Charlie," callie said looking at her.
"Is that how you really feel," Arizona said tears she didn't even know where threatening to spill.
"when are you gonna send me back," Charlie asked.
"Cuz this went longer than I thought it would and I'm ready to go," Charlie said.
"You aren't a car or a shirt that's to small we wouldn't return you," Arizona said crying.
"I need more insulin," Charlie mumbled.
"Huh," Callie asked.
"I need more insulin," Charlie whisper.
"You have to speak up," Arizona said.
"I need more insulin," Charlie said.
"What why," Callie asked pulling up to the hospital.
"I'm type one diabetic," Charlie said.
"Becky never mentioned that," Arizona said.
"It's in my file," Charlie said.
"We didn't get the chance to read her file," Callie whispered to no one in particular.
"Well we're at the hospital so we can do a full work up to see how you're doing and all the good stuff,"Arizona said.
"I'll page Karev," Callie said.
"No Karevs in surgery he had to finish the surgery because I had to leave," Arizona said pointing the last part at Charlie.
"Get Grey," Arizona said.
"She's sick Ellis gave her the flu," Callie said.
"Get Bailey or Mark,"Arizona said.
"The chief or mr social unaware," callie said.
"Well we can't do it," Arizona said.
"Ok," Callie said finally getting out the car.
"Come on follow us," Arizona said.
"I'll have someone come do work up for you and will get your files from your last doctor transferred and a new prescription just the perks of being a doctor," Callie said giving Arizona a kiss on the cheek before leaving.
"Why don't we go up to the pediatric floor," Arizona said walking towards an elevator. Charlie didn't say anything she just followed.
"How do your emotions change so quickly," Charlie asked.
"What," Arizona said pressing the button.
"You were just yelling at me at the park for skipping and now your getting me a diabetic check or work up or what ever and insulin," Charlie said.
"Yeah I'm still mad at you but you have to survive today for me to be mad at you tomorrow," Arizona said as the door open.
"Huh," Charlie said following behind Arizona.
"Health comes first," Arizona said looking down at her pager. Charlie only nodddd.
"This room," Arizona said opening the door. There stood Callie and another women
The African American women opened her mouth to speak.
"My name is Dr. Miranda Bailey," the short women said.
"Hi I'm Charlie," Charlie said sticking her hand.
"You can get up on the exam table I'm going to have someone your blood and then I'll run some test and in a few hours I'll be back," the women said .
"You owe me," the women mutter before leaving the room.
The was a beeping sound.
"Shit that's me," Callie said looking at the old device on her pants.
"We'll be ok," Arizona said before kissing Callie on the cheek.
"Hi Charlie in here to take you blood," the petite redhead told her.
"My names Georgia," the women said grabbing the elastic of the tray wrapping it around her arm.
"I'll be taking just 3 vials of blood," the redhead said preparing the needle.
"Stay very still please," she said pressing to find a vain.
"You took it like champ," the nurse said after removing the needle from their arm.
"Yeah I'm used to it," Charlie joked.
"Alright let me get these blood sample down to the lab and I'll se you in a bit," The nurse said before leaving with Charlie's blood.
It felt too weird it felt homey. It was like they had a mom and a dad again but they didn't want new parents. They could never let these strangers replace them. But they felt like they were at home, like they were safe. They got attach to be honest. And rule number one was to not get attached.
"Ok, so I have to go check on some patients and what not so would you like to stay in my office or you can stay in Callie's, either works," Arizona said.
"It doesn't matter," Charlie shrugged.
"Great, I'll take you to mine," Arizona said walking out the door.
The women walk like she was the human embodiment of sunshine. Like she had no troubles, had no worries. But that was far from the truth. The blonde had a dark past. But Charlie didn't know that.
"So you can just chill in here till my shift is over or your blood work comes back," Arizona said before Turning around to leave the office.
"Ok," Charlie said plopping down on the couch.
"This family is weird,"Charlie whispered before pulling out her phone.
