A shorter chapter but i didnt want to leave you hanging off that cliff for too long
Chapter 2
A hand on her shoulder made her jump, in full gear 2 firefighters stood there, one already unhooking his spare mask, the other doing the same for Arizona, as the burning ceiling rained down on them,
"We need to get you out" he shouted, "Can you walk?" he questioned as his colleague took over CPR, Callie nodded with the mask over her face getting breaths of fresh air she felt much better the dizziness fading,
"We are on the second floor coming down, 2 victims we need a medical team ready" the fire fighter ordered,
"I have a pulse," his colleague announced easily lifting Arizona draping his jacket over her "We need to get out" he ordered taking the lead, the other firefighter grabbed Callie leading her through the smoke down the remaining 2 floors. They passed fire fighters coming the other way laden with hoses. At the bottom 30 metres from the burning building the Grey Sloan team stood ready.
As soon as they heard there was a fire in the apartment building across the road, they'd bleeped Callie and Arizona, when they'd had no response, they had made their way over just in time to see Callie exiting the building thick black smoke pouring out the open door behind her, she handed Alex Sofia.
"Look after her" she ordered coughing, her face black with soot. Alex nodded taking off sprinting for the Grey Sloan emergency department. Coughing Callie took a few deep breaths of fresh air, before turning to go back in. April grabbed her arm
"Callie you can't go back in" She begged, Callie's eyes weren't focusing on April but on the door,
"Arizona is in there, I'm not leaving her" She pulled April's arm off her, taking a step forwards Meredith was next in line blocking her way silently trying to stop her friend.
"If it was Derick" Callie said, "If Derick was in there, the fire burning him, the smoke choking the life out of him, and you could save him" She pleaded tears running down her face, Meredith moved out the way letting Callie run in.
The fire department were minutes behind, the sirens a welcome relief,
"There are 2 women inside, Arizona only has one leg, Callie went to get her, they live on the fifth floor" April informed the fire officer. Watching as they went in. It was a long wait watching more and more firefighter running into the building and starting the ariel water attack before the lobby doors opened again.
A limp Arizona being carried by a fire fighter, they could see burns on her remaining leg.
"Oh God" April called bringing the stretcher over while Meredith grabbed the oxygen. The firefighter placed the blonde onto the stretcher, both Doctors went straight into assessment mode.
"Airway has soot, intubating" April called, as Meredith worked on access. From the hospital Owen ran across, Alex had given him the heads up, Bailey had stayed to assess Sofia.
"Callie" He cried running over to her bringing over the oxygen tank, she pushed him away.
"Focus on Arizona" she ordered. Owen ignored her placing the oxygen mask over her face.
"Breathe, they have her" they both looked over to see April bagging Arizona, Meredith squeezing fluids in,
"Let's get her inside" Meredith ordered, utilising a fire fighter to help push the trolley. Inside the ER the rest of the team was waiting, Richard took the lead.
"Page Jackson for these burns" he ordered, "Start fluids, high flow oxygen and antibiotics stat" Webber ordered listening to her chest.
They continued to work ono Arizona, Callie stubbornly refusing help watching them work on her wife. Bailey had left Alex with Sofia, who was already up and playing in the next-door room and persuaded Callie to wear an O2 mask by stubbornly placing it onto her everything she took it off until Callie relented allowing her to watch as she examined her friend.
"We've stabilised her for now, Jackson is going to debride the burns, but they should heal in a few weeks. We will keep her in a medically induced coma for the next 48 hours then we will review." Webber said, Alex joined them listening to the end of that.
"Sofia is fine, good lung sounds. I'll admit her overnight just to be 100% sure but you got her out in time" he reassured Callie.
"So now will you sit down and let us check you out" Bailey asked, leading Callie to the bed.
"I just…" Callie said,
"I wasn't asking" Bailey replied already listening to her lungs. "Sounds clear, I think you should stay on the O2 we will take a gas, if it all checks out, we can have you out of here in a few hours."
"I need to go, Arizona and Sofia" she explained coughing,
"If you let me finish, I see no reason why you can't be on O2 in Peds, Alex has already agreed to monitor your levels." Bailey finished, understanding the family had been through a trauma and Callie would want to be with them. "I will be doing my charting and as I am sitting, I may as well sit in the ICU, and yes I will call if anything changes" she promised. "We also need to dress those burns"
"Thank you" Callie coughed grasping Bailey's hand. Bailey patted her hand.
"We are family, dysfunctional but family" she said glad everyone was keeping their distance not wanting them to hear how mushy she was. "Do I need to call anyone else? Family?" Callie shook her head no,
"Arizona has had a falling out with her parents, they didn't even come to see her after the plane crash" she explained sadly. An intern came in with burns dressings, normally Callie would insist on Mark doing it, but he was dead and Jackson should focus on Arizona. Bailey interrupted shooing the intern out.
"Bailey its fine, they're minor burns" Callie said defending the intern, Bailey ignored her protests
"Come" she instructed taking her to the nearest showers allowing her to wash the worse of the soot off before dressing in some scrubs that had appeared and allowing Bailey to clean and dress the burns one to her calf and 2 to her arms. As soon as Bailey had finished Alex approached with a wheelchair and portable cylinder ready to escort Callie to Peds.
Callie stood up feeling slightly dizzy, the adrenaline was wearing off and the pain from her burns and in her lungs was making itself known. Taking a breath stubbornly, she refused to stop she was going to see her daughter, then she was going to see her wife.
Alex saw the dizzy episode deciding not to call Callie out on it but take her away from the prying eyes to Peds where he could monitor her. On the way stopping to pick up a large bottle of cold water to help with her throat. Callie sipped the water gratefully. Arriving on the Peds floor Alex wheeled her down to Sofia's room, April was sat next to Sofia, reading a book on animals
"Look Sofia it's a giraffe, they have long necks so they can eat leaves of really tall trees" April explained to Sofia who seemed more interested in trying to eat the book than the pictures. "Sorry I just didn't want her here on her own, so I thought I'd come and read to her" she apologised, Callie smiled,
"No, I appreciate you sitting with her" Callie said earnestly sitting on the bed next to her daughter. Sofia squealed pulling the oxygen off again hugging her Mamma. Despite the pain in her arm from the burns Callie held her daughter tightly.
"Mamma" Sofia squealed, "Giawwff" she tried to repeat pointing at the book.
"That's right baby, Giraffe" Callie kissed the top of her daughter's head noticing someone had bathed her, she was no longer covered in smoke.
Alex got his stethoscope out and checking Sofia for himself again. "You know this is twice you've been admitted to Peds" he noted, quickly ducking out the room as a pillow came flying at his head.
Callie lifted Sofia up lying on the bed, carefully moving the pillows and the bedside so Sofia was tucked next to her but not at risk of falling off the bed. She intended to make Sofia comfortable and watch her sleep for a bit, make sure she was settled then sneak into the ICU to see Arizona. She'd just rest her eyes for a few moments.
