SmackDown: 23/8/2001
SmackDown was live at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. SmackDown kicked off live with a Hardcore Championship rematch from SummerSlam with Rob Van Dam defending his title against the unpredictable Jeff Hardy. Both men showcased their respective high-flying maneuvers until Van Dam set up a table outside the ring. RVD attempted to suplex Hardy from the top rope through the table, but Hardy reversed it with a hurricanrana, which catapulted the Hardcore Champ back into the ring. Hardy grabbed a ladder from under the ring and set it up next to the table. The challenger then laid Van Dam on the table and climbed to the top of the steel structure. Hardy went for his patented Swanton Bomb off the ladder, but RVD moved, forcing Hardy to slam through the table and onto the floor. Several Federation officials ran to ringside and helped the high flyer to the back. As RVD watched Hardy being wheeled away, Raven attacked his fellow Alliance member from behind. Van Dam finally got the momentum back on his side, eventually winning the match after hitting his Five-Star Frog Splash on Raven for the win.
As RVD celebrated, Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley walked down the ramp and told the production team to stop the music. She said she couldn't believe that two members of the Alliance were fighting each other. She berated the men and told them to shake hands, but the two would not comply with the ECW owner's demands.
At that point, Stone Cold Steve Austin made his way to the ring, obviously furious that the unity of the Alliance was wavering. The Rattlesnake told both men that they were embarrassing the Alliance. He told both men to go back to the Alliance's locker room and act like professionals.
Stone Cold then told the crowd that Kurt Angle did ruin Austin Appreciation Night this past Monday on RAW, but the Olympic hero would not get away with it. The Rattlesnake said that he should be appreciated 365 days a year anyway. Stephanie told Stone Cold that everyone in the Pepsi Arena appreciated the Texas Rattlesnake, but she was cut short by Chris Jericho's music. The Lionheart made his way to the ramp and told Stephanie to shut the hell up! Y2J said that he knew the Alliance would be in full force on SmackDown because they had the greatest weapon known to man – Stephanie's singing voice! He even went on to play a clip from RAW, showing the Denver crowd how Stephanie crooned "Wind Beneath Our Ring." Jericho said he had his own song for Austin, and he began to sing "Did you ever know that you're a jackass?" to the Federation Champion. Y2J then asked Austin another question stemming from RAW – 'Got Milk?" – and he played another clip from RAW showing Angle drenching the Alliance with milk. At that point, Jericho challenged Stone Cold to a Federation Championship match on SmackDown. Austin said that he would put the title on the line … but not tonight.
He said Y2J didn't deserve a shot for the gold, but he agreed to face Jericho in a non-title match, and if he defeated the Rattlesnake, Y2J would become the No. 1 contender for the Federation Championship!
The Dudley Boyz took on the team of Billy Gunn and Big Show. Show dominated the Dudleyz, taking both men out with massive clotheslines. The Dudley Boyz recovered and attempted a 3-D on Big Show, but the 500-pound monster was too heavy for them to life. Show then hit a chokeslam on D-Von and covered him to give the Show-Gunns the upset victory!
The Rock was walking down the hallway when he ran into a production crew member. He asked the man if he had seen APA, and he directed The Rock down the hall.
The WCW Champion walked into the APA's office, and Bradshaw and Faarooq congratulated the Great One for his win against Booker T at SummerSlam. The People's Champ told the APA that they would lay the smack down on Booker T, Rhyno and Test later on SmackDown!
In another locker room, Edge was on the phone with his grandma, telling her that he would be defending the Intercontinental Championship later on in the night. Christian told Edge that he had a sure way that his brother would remain I.C. Champ after SmackDown! – he cancelled Edge's match! Christian then said that he had set up a Federation Tag Team Championship match up for the duo, meaning they had the chance to become eight-time Tag Team Champions.
Edge told his brother that he wasn't exactly happy that they had to face the Brothers of Destruction for the titles.
In the Alliance's locker room, Kanyon was talking to Chuck Palumbo, Justin Credible, Sean O'Haire and Chavo Guerrero that he was excited about his match against Kurt Angle later in the night.
Next up, Kurt Angle took on the WCW U.S. Champion, Kanyon. During the match, the Olympic hero hit a succession of suplexes on the self-proclaimed Alliance MVP. Kanyon tried to hit Angle with the U.S. title, but Angle ducked. The former Federation Champion then hit his Olympic Slam on Kanyon. Angle won the match by forcing the U.S. Champ to tap out to his ankle-lock submission!
The Rock, Bradshaw and Faarooq took on the Alliance's team of Booker T, Rhyno and Test in six-man tag team action. At several points, all six Superstars were brawling inside the ring. Eventually, only Booker T and Faarooq were left inside the ring, which allowed Booker to hit a scissors kick on the former Florida State football star for the win. On his way backstage, The Book graciously gave the Denver fans a Spinaroonie at the top of the ramp.
X-Pac was hosting SmackDown at WWF New York, and he told the fans that he was the first person in sports entertainment history to have titles from both the Federation and WCW at the same time. He said that because of that, he was obviously one of the greatest Superstars to ever grace sports entertainment.
He told the New York fans that they were in the presence of greatness, and that the world had better start recognizing it.
Commissioner William Regal and Tajiri were talking in Regal's office when Perry Saturn walked in looking for Moppy. Regal said that he had found Moppy, and he presented Saturn with a mop with a painted face. Saturn embraced the mop, but he then attacked the Commissioner for trying to pawn off a fake Moppy on him. Saturn then looked to the heavens and screamed for his long lost Moppy before storming out of the office.
Debra was yelling at Stone Cold because she couldn't believe Jericho had the nerve to degrade her cooking skills. She said she would feel a lot better if her husband ate one of her cookies. Austin asked her if he really had to eat one right then, but she insisted. When Debra turned her back for a few seconds, Stone Cold dumped the cookies on the floor. When she turned around, he told his wife that he had accidently dropped them. She told him that Y2J's actions were obviously disturbing him because he would never drop her cookies on purpose. Austin said she was right and that he would take care of Jericho later on in the night.
Next up was Edge and Christian vs The Brothers of Destruction for the WWF Tag team Championship.
In the arena, Edge and Christian's theme hits and out comes the 7-time WWF Tag Team Champions who start making their way down to the ring.
"The following contest is scheduled for one-fall and it is for the World Wrestling Federation Tag Team Championship!" Tony Chimel announced. "Making their way to the ring, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, at a combined weight of 459 lbs... CHRISTIAN AND EDGE!"
"You gotta give credit where it's due, Cole and I'll give it." Tazz said. "Edge becoming the Intercontinental Champion at SummerSlam. Big up to Edge."
The pyro explodes and Kane's theme plays as the Big Red Machine walks out with one WWF Tag Team Championship on his right shoulder, and the other WCW Tag Team Championship on his left shoulder.
"And making his way to the ring, one half of the World Wrestling Federation Tag Team Champions... KANE!" Tony Chimel announced.
"Well this isn't the match we expected to see here tonight." Cole said. "Edge was supposed to defend his Intercontinental title tonight, but Christian went to Commissioner Regal's office and said 'We want a tag team title match' and Regal went 'Fine!' So now it's Edge and Christian against the Brothers of Destruction, and Edge isn't pleased."
Kane gets on the ring apron, faces the stage, raises his arms and then throws them down, causing fire to explode from the turnbuckles just as his theme cuts off.
OOOOOOWHOOOOOO!
Dead Silent plays to a pop from the fans as smoke fills the stage, the lights dimming to a familiar sinister blood red and dark blue. Trish is standing on the stage in a dark robe, dressed in black leather pants and a black top, before the Bladewolf walks out, carrying the WWF and WCW Tag Team Championships, and stands in front of her, facing the ring with a dark glare on his face.
Trish takes the robe off, then walks around him, running a hand seductively across his shoulders as she walks forward to the ring while singing.
"He is time... famine, war... pestilence you cannot endure..." Trish gets in the ring and seductively rubs her body against the ropes as she continues while getting more frantic by the second. "the end is here... the end is here! Fall and Pray! Fall and Pray! Fall and PRAY!"
The lights flash blood red repeatedly as Trish falls to her knees and moves out the way as Bladewolf appears in the ring, unleashing a primal yell as he stands under the flashing red lights while the songs repeats the 'fall and pray' part.
Bladewolf beats his chest in sync with the drum part of the theme and the song slowly ends as Trish slides between Bladewolf's legs and poses on her knees in front of him while her back is pressed against his knees.
The lights go to normal and Trish gets to her feet as Bladewolf takes off his coat followed by his short-sleeved shirt to reveal his ring gear underneath. Bladewolf hands his WWF Tag Team title to the referee, as does Kane, and they hand the WCW Tag team titles to Trish.
"Bladewolf and Kane have had a great SummerSlam." Cole said. "Kane unified the WCW and WWF Tag Team titles alongside his brother, the Undertaker. While Bladewolf defeated Bulletproof in 2-on-1 action."
"That was a great match, I'll tell you that." Tazz said. "And now, the Undertaker, kane and Bladewolf have all the gold, WCW gold, WWF gold, they're monsters!"
The referee raises the WWF Tag Team titles, showing they are on the line tonight, then hands them to someone at ringside before calling for the bell.
'Ding! Ding! Ding!'
"Look at Christian." Cole gestured to Christian who was telling Edge to start off. "He's the one who wanted this match, yet he's having his brother, Edge, starting the damn thing. Give me a break."
Kane gets out onto the ring apron as Bladewolf starts off with Edge.
"Well, maybe he just wants Edge to soften up Bladewolf, then Christian will come in and finish it." Tazz shrugged.
Bladewolf lunges at Edge who ducks it and gets Bladewolf in the corner where he lands several right hands to the forehead of the Demon Wolf, only to be grabbed by Bladewolf and tossed into the corner by Bladewolf who unloads with a fury of lefts and rights.
"And here comes the Demon Wolf!" Cole said. "Bladewolf with a fury of lefts and rights to Edge."
Bladewolf keeps up his attack before glaring at the referee when heairng hi count, scaring the referee back. Bladeowlf boots Edge in the stomach, Irish whips him across the ring and runs for a turnbuckle clothesline but gets an elbow to the face by Edge, who follows it up by running at Bladeowlf, who takes Edge down with a clothesline.
"Nice clothesline there by Bladewolf." Cole said.
"The Brothers of Destruction are the most dominant force in the WWF today." Tazz said. "i'll give them that. I just wish they could see the light and come to the Alliance."
Bladewolf brings his elbow down on Edge's back repeatedly then gets to his feet, pulls Edge to his and knees him in the stomach repeatedly before he takes Edge down with a hard right while holding his right arm. Bladewolf pulls Edge to his feet and then brings his shoudler into Edge's rightarm, the he Irish whips Edge off the ropes and drops him with a big boot.
"bladewolf then goes for the cover.
"Now Bladewolf going for the cover." Cole said.
"One!"
"Two-!"
Christian breaks it up.
"And Christian breaks it up." Cole said.
Christian gets out the ring as Bladewolf gets to his feet and glares at him before he turns around into a spinning heel kick from Edge, who then tags in Christian.
"And here comes Christian." Cole said.
"i think it's great that WWF superstars are beating up WWf superstars."
"Well, of course they are! it's competition!" Cole said.
"And I think it's great for the World Wrestling Federation." Tazz chuckles.
Bladewolf uppercuts Edge then picks him up before he runs and drives Christian into his corner. Bladewolf holds Christian there as he tags in Kane.
"And Bladewolf tags in his brother, Kane." Cole said.
Kane comes in and both Kane and Bladewolf uppercut Christian before Bladewolf gets out onto the ring apron as Kane continues to punish Christian, lifts him up and hits a sidewalk slam in the middle of the ring.
"Sidewalk slam." Cole said as Kane goes for the cover. "hook of the leg!"
"One!"
"Two-"
Edge breaks the pin.
"Edge breaks up the three count." Cole said.
"i don't think Edge's mind is on this match, Cole." Tazz said. "I think he's full of ego, that he might have now that he wants to defend his own title."
While the referee is distracted with Edge... CHRISTIAN NAILS THE LOW BLOW ON KANE!
"Low blow by Christian." Cole said. "Referee had his back turned." Christian starts pounding away on Kane's back with forearm after forearm, trying to keep the Big red Machine down. "Christian desperate as he hammers away on the Big Red Machine, Kane."
Christian stomps on Kane then tags in Edge, who comes in and delivers some right hands to the masked head of Kane. Edge goes to Irish whip Kane, but Kane reverses it, goes for a right but Edge ducks it, rebounds off the ropes again only to be floored with a big boot by Kane. Kane then walks over and tags in his brother.
"And here comes the younger brother of Kane." Cole said.
Edge makes the tag to Christian who runs into into a hard right hand from Bladewolf.
"You know, every time Bladewolf and Kane team together, I can't help but feel like they are treating it as a competition of who can do better." Tazz said. "I get they are brothers, but they are actually doing that with their opponents sometimes."
Bladeowlf irish whips Christian, runs and floors him with a hard clothesline, gets to his feet, rebounds off the ropes and land a leg drop across the throat of Christian. Bladewolf gets to his feet, pulls Christian to his, irish whips him into the corner then runs and hits a turnbuckle clothesline.
"Christian wanted this matchup, and he's getting some from Bladewolf now." Cole said.
Bladewolf scoops Christian up... AND HITS SNAKE EYES! Bladewolf lifts Christian up again then runs... AND HITS THE RUNNING POWERSLAM! Bladewolf gets to his feet and raises his right hand to cheers from the fans.
"Goozle time, Cole!" Tazz exclaimed.
Christian turns around... INTO A GOOZLE! Bladewofl goes to Chokeslam Christian... BUT EDGE NAILS THE SPEAR!
"Edge with a Spear!" Cole exclaimed. "What a Spear by Edge to the Bladewolf!"
Kane comes into the ring and fights Edge.
"And Kane now in the ring with a right hand to Edge." Cole said as Kane knocks Edge out of the ring and follows. Back in the ring, Christian covers Bladewolf. "And Christian with the cover!"
"One!"
"Two!"
"Thr-!
Bladewolf kicks out at two.
"But Bladewolf kicks out." Cole said.
"Gonna take a lot more than that to keep the Demon Wolf down." Tazz said.
Christian pulls Bladewolf to his feet when Bladewolf suddenly lifts him up onto his shoulders AND HITS THE FURY OF THE WOLF! HE HOOKS THE LEGS! ONE! TWO! THREE! THE BLADEWOLF AND KANE RETAIN THE TITLES!
'Ding! Ding! Ding!'
Dead Silent plays as Bladewolf gets to his feet. "here are your winners and still World Wrestling Federation Tag Team Champions... THE BLADEWOLF AND KANE!" Tony Chimel announced.
The referee hands them the WWF Tag Team titles while Trish enters the ring and hands them the WCW Tag Team titles. Bladewolf and Kane raise both titles before SmackDown goes to commercial break...
