Scene Five
❦︎
The light is bright; it is midday. The stage floor is rocky, with the illusion of rough terrain. HEDY treads through the alps, walking from SR to SL. She has a blank, yet determined, look on her face. The face of a woman who has walked for days and is tired but must go on. She is beginning to look sickly. There are pawprints on the ground which she follows. There are also rose petals scattered across the stage. The tracks end. Suddenly, HEDY stops. Her eyes move about; she looks from SL to DL, and then to DS, and out into the audience. Her eyes catch something. She straightens up and runs to DC with every bit of energy she has left. Her eyes move from DC to DR, very slowly, as though she were watching BRUNO move from very far away.
HEDY (her voice is hoarse and tired and sore)
Bruno! Bruno!
A few seconds pass, when the winds begin to whisper to HEDY. At first, it just sounds like wind, but then it morphs into THE VOICE.
THE VOICE (offstage, or over the sound system)
He doesn't love you anymore.
HEDY
(falls to the floor, covering her ears and laying in a fetal position) No! No! No!
THE VOICE
He is a beast now, on the hunt for a mate of his own kind. He doesn't want you anymore.
HEDY
He is human! He is! He is!
THE VOICE
He left you like your father and mother did. When he loved you and wanted you, it was like your parents coming back, wasn't it? And now he's gone, isn't he? It's like they've left all over again.
HEDY
They never loved me to begin with. Bruno loves me.
THE VOICE
He's a beast. Beasts don't love.
HEDY
He is not a beast. He is a man.
THE VOICE
Would a man who loves you run from you?
HEDY (terror and confusion that morphs into hurt and anger; with a pain from the depths of her soul)
Ach… Ahh … Ahh! Leave me be. Leave me be!
Fade to black. End of Scene Five.
