The day had come when Peter Parker would arrive at the tower. Everything was set, everything that a teenage boy could possibly need was ready in the room. So Faustine went to pick the boy up at the airport. Obviously he was anxious, looking around when he passed the arrivals gate. The secretary waited beside the reserved space for the passengers when she saw the new young hero.
- Peter Parker? I am Faustine Michaelis, I work for Stark Industries. I will be taking you to the tower. - She said, showing her identification.
- Sweet. Thanks. I was wondering how I would get there, since Mr. Stark didn't give me any directions… I know it is kinda hard to miss the Avengers tower, but still…
- Follow me. - She simply said, smiling to the boy.
Peter was taken to the tower where Faustine made the same route that Pepper had done with her to show him around. His bags were taken to his room before he could protest. The teen looked around with interest, not asking many questions, as if he was on a mission. Finally Peter arrived at his room, with the blonde secretary standing beside the door and handing a keycard.
- This will be your room. It has anything you might need. However, if you notice that we forgot something, feel free to call me in these numbers. This is the schedule that the meals are prepared for, but for the Avengers, due to the odd hours, the kitchen is always available. - She said, giving the promised schedule to the boy.
- When will I be able to talk to Mr. Stark?
- Mr. Stark is out dealing with company matters for today. However, he will be here by late night or early tomorrow. For now, my recommendation is to rest as much as you need.
- Sure. Thanks. - The boy fidget before entering.
Faustine walked away, taking a deep breath in front of the elevator, waiting for it to arrive. For a second, she let her guard down. So far, everything was sailing smoothly, she had seen the boy safely to the tower, the tour was a success, he was resting inside, now all she had to do was to wait until the end of her shift.
- Playing babysitter now? - A male voice came from behind her, making Faustine hold in a scream.
- Mr. Laufeyson. - She breathed out to regain her composure. - How can I assist you?
- Just looking for some amusement… Not much to do when you are playing the good guy… - He said with a coy smile.
- Sure. Do you have any preferred activities, hobbies you like? If not, you can pick a preferred genre and I can make a list of movies and order your prefered snacks to be delivered to you.
- You see… I would love to-
The conversation was cut short due to the sound of the elevator's doors opening to reveal the God of Thunder and to Peter Parker coming out of his room. Loki cursed under his breath, nowhere to escape from both of his interruptions. The teenager came closer like a drooling kid and Thor had his obnoxious look while approaching the new secretary.
- Brother! Miss Michaelis! What a pleasant surprise! - Said Thor in his thunderous deep voice.
- Mr. Odinson.
- Who is the new kid?
- That is Peter Parker. He has been recruited by Tony Stark. I believe he will handle introductions upon his arrival.
- ah… hi… - Peter greeted, drying his hands on his jeans to shake hands with Thor.
- Miss Michaelis, I'll be out on a mission. So when I return I would like this list of items to be delivered to my room.
- Absolutely. I'll see it done.
- and I…ahm… can't seem to rest… so I would like to go to a lab or something… - Peter said from behind Loki.
- Absolutely. Right this way, Mr. Parker. - She pointed the elevator to the boy. - Excuse me. - She said to the brothers.
Faustine disappeared behind metal doors with the kid and as soon as she taught him the way to the lab, she was off to work on the absurd list that Thor had given her. Happily, it took most of her time, not giving much opportunity to think about the awkward encounter in the hallway earlier today. She learned that her guard must be up all the time, basic survival instinct.
Days went by, Peter started to blend in with the Avengers and work on projects with Tony Stark himself. Despite the CEO's complaints about the lack of silence from the kid, both of them worked really well together and it was obvious the growing liking of the student.
Peter Parker would also seek Faustine to talk about teenage problems. They would sit together during lunch, him to talk and she to listen. No one knew how she managed to get the patience to keep up with him.
- You know… you really look like Gwen…
- Who? - Faustine asked, curious, testing the kid's intentions.
- Gwen Stacy… she was my high School crush… And things didn't go smoothly… Sticky situation, you know… - He said, with an apple stuck to his fingers and making Faustine laugh. - It is like a second chance…
- Mr. Parker….
- No.. please.. Call me Peter.
- If you are saying what I think you are saying, I can't. You are still underage and I have to keep my distance. I have been with someone younger than me in the past… and it was very interesting. However, you are still too young, you should share your teen curiosity with another person your age. If it doesn't work out… in the future, a few years from now, you try again…. But the person has to be above legal age, deal?
- Are you sure? I mean… Was I too cringey?
- A little bit… you shouldn't mention your dead ex… but I loved the pun.
- How…?
- I read your file a few times before you arrived.
- Where do I hide?
Faustine smiled, held Peter's hand for a second out of sympathy and walked away to give a chance to the boy to recompose himself. Some time later, the God of Mischief was out and about, when he saw the secretary looking dreamy at the computer screen. He tried to approach her without making a noise to see what she was looking at. However she snapped out of her bubble right in the moment that he passed the threshold.
- Mr. Laufeyson. - She greeted.
- Miss Michaelis. Daydreaming during work hours… Should I report you? - He teased.
- Please, no, Mr. Laufeyson. - She said with a gentle smile.
- Then please, tell me what was on your mind.
- oh… it wasn't anything important. Nothing to worry about.
- Not the answer I wanted. - He smiled back in a challenge. - Friday.- He waited for the computer to respond to him. - Send a message to Mrs. Potts that her assistant was daydreaming.
- Message Sent. - The computer responded.
- I am a man of my word.
- So what she was daydreaming, Loki? - Pepper said from behind him. - As far as I am concerned, her task list is done.
- Mr. Stark, Mrs Potts. Welcome back. - Faustine Greeted.
- Talking about it, don't you have more messages to decode? - Tony said, walking past everyone in the direction to his office.
- my work is also done. I was merely seeking amusement.
- Don't scare her. Unless you want to take her job.
- Oh, no. Why would I do any more work for you? - The god said, before walking away.
- I am sorry Mrs. Potts. It won't happen again. - Faustine said.
- He is just toying with you. Don't be so harsh on yourself.
Another close call. Faustine was glad that she wasn't caught reading Loki's file yet again. It was already bad enough being a full grown woman with a crush… and that crush being Loki Laufeyson, the God of Mischief. Why her stupid brain would do that?
Pepper increased her work load and Peter Parker was keeping her busy enough with all of his questions and requests. Faustine knew that she had to push her feelings down, conceal them from the outside world. Another call from Peter was all she needed and quickly she went to see the boy. Peter Parker was working with Bruce Banner on a new compound to constrict the Hulk in case he was out of control again. There he was hanging upside down from a web stuck to the ceiling.
- Maybe you don't want to enter my room, if this is not a good idea. - Peter said, apologetic.
- You can use this test lab anytime you want…
- Yeah… but, I am used to doing things in my room… and here I've got nothing to hide.
- How can I help you? - She sighed, losing her fight against the kid.
- I am in need of an assistant… and I thought you could help me.
- Mr. Parker.
- Yeah… I know… age gap, respect the law, but I really need an assistant. I need to watch the data on the computer and I could really use some help to trigger my web shooters
- That I can do. Absolutely.
- Great…ah! Is best if you wear them. Or you will get the web on your hands.
Peter and Faustine worked together in order to achieve the boy's goal. Inevitably, the secretary's hands were caught in a mess of web. They were having fun, having the laugh of their lives while small pieces of web fell to the floor.
- so… do you have any crushes? - Peter asked.
- Mr. Parker… - Faustine said, feeling sad for the boy.
- I am just trying to make some conversation. The web stuck to the scissors again.
- yes. I do… - she confessed.
- considering where we are and what we deal with… is it human….?
- good question… but I'm not playing that game.
- conversation only! I promise! - Peter said, making Faustine giggle.
- yes… they present themselves in human form.
- what else?
- tall, attractive, athletic.
- please… we work with super heroes. - Peter said in playful frustration, making Faustine laugh again.
- dark hair…. and that is the last you will know.
- why?
- you talk too much! And you will spill the beans way too easily.
Peter was at loss for words. Faustine was sincere and it was true. Losing the battle again, was trying to remain silent until Peter got a notification on his phone with work for Spider Man.
The secretary was left to pick the rest of the webs on her own. Her mind started to drift, wondering how it would be to receive Loki's help. Would he magically make it disappear? Would he take his time, as Peter was doing? Or… would he stick her hands together and…
The ringing phone brought Faustine back to reality. It showed Pepper's number. Trying to not stick the phone to her hands, the Secretary explained to Pepper where she was and what was happening to her taking so long to answer.
Using Friday's voice commands, the Secretary was back to work at the same time she freed herself faster from the sticky substance.
Peter and Faustine grew closer with time, if Peter wasn't a young adult, they would seem like mother and son, sitting together and laughing at funny videos.
Loki was pleased to see she had a sense of humor. Maybe a trick or two wouldn't go unnoticed.
