The day seemed to go by slowly with Anthony looking over his shoulder every moment. Eventually, he had to go to his PE class. He decided to change in one of the stalls, not wanting Kenny to pull something. He waited a moment until he was sure the locker room was empty before he locked his stuff in a locker and then went into the gym. Anthony sat by himself in one of the corners to wait for the class to start.
"LaRusso!"
Anthony looked up and noticed his two friends walking up to him. He sighed in relief, glad that he hadn't seen Kenny yet. Maybe if I'm really lucky he got a different PE Period.
"Hey guys…"
"Where have you been all summer?" Zack asked as he and Marcus came over.
"Yeah, what gives?" Marcus added.
"After the school told my parents about everything with Kenny last year, they took all my stuff." Anthony explained.
"Didn't you say it was only gonna be a few weeks?" Zack crossed his arms.
"They changed their minds,"
"Uh huh?" Zack didn't seem to buy it.
"Seriously!" Anthony threw his hands up in defense. "They grounded me for like the whole summer. I couldn't go anywhere."
"Come on, man," Marcus could believe it. He punched Zack's shoulder. "He's got to be telling the truth. Why else would he have blown Lia off?"
"You're right," Zack could see that Marcus had a point there. They both knew how hard Anthony was crushing on her.
"Wait," Anthony put a hand up, wanting to slow things down for a second. Something didn't make sense. "How did you guys know about that?"
"People talk, man," Zack replied.
"I mean, even if I wasn't grounded, was I really going to go pretend to be buddies with Kenny?" Anthony forced a laugh, wanting to sound cool.
"Seriously LaPusso?" Zack shook his head and Anthony flinched in response. "You would blow off Lia because of him? No, you can't be that stupid!"
"Don't call me that!" Anthony snapped.
Before Zack could respond to Anthony, the three boys heard the sound of a whistle being blown which in turn hurt some of the kids ears, but got their attention as intended.
"Line up!" The teacher yelled while still holding his whistle in between his fingers as all the kids in the gym gathered around, standing a few feet apart from each other in five separate lines. Anthony stood across from Zack and Marcus. "We're going to start with some sprints." The teacher walked back in forth between the five sections the kids had made. "You five at the front will sprint to the end and when they get back here, whoever is behind you will take over."
Anthony was the third in his line and didn't miss the glare that Zack was sending him. Once it was finally their turn to run, Anthony tried to run as fast as he could, but he felt himself get tired after getting to one side of the gym. Zack passed him, shaking his head. Anthony forced himself to keep going. Almost there… Anthony went to tag the hand of the person that was behind him in the line. He blanched as he saw Kenny with a smirk on his face. Kenny make a fake move to hit him and Anthony flinched, causing him to trip and fall.
"Tired already?" Kenny taunted loudly, which caused the gym to fill with laughter. He leaned to Anthony's ear. "And they really believe you know karate?"
The whistle was blown again and then Kenny ran off as the coach came over to Anthony. "Are you hurt?" He asked and Anthony shook his head. "On your feet, LaRusso."
Four rounds of sprints later and the whistle was blown again. The class gathered in the center of the gym where the coach went over what the year would be like. But for the first day, they would spend the day playing Dodgeball.
"Thompson and Jones," The coach pointed to Zack and another kid to be the team captains. "Pick your teams,"
"Marcus," Zack picked first.
"Danny," The other person picked.
When it came back to Zack to pick, Anthony felt relieved, thinking he would be next.
"Kenny,"
Anthony blanched when he saw the look that both Zack and Kenny gave him as he went over to his side. Oh fuck… And the picking went on, back and forth until everyone was on a side. Anthony ended being the last person left and going on the opposite team to Zack and Marcus.
"What the hell?" Anthony went up to him before the game was about to start.
"I think your side is over there,"
"Why didn't you pick me?" Anthony didn't get it. "And why the hell would you pick Kenny?"
"He knows his stuff," Zack shrugged. "Figure that karate will make him a good teammate."
"What about me?"
"I'm sure if you're as good as you say, you'll give the other team a fair advantage," Zack walked away, tossing one of the balls they would be using in the air and catching it.
Is this some kind of test?
The whistle was blown again and coach went over to Anthony. "LaRusso, on your side!" Anthony jogged over to his side, sticking to the back.
Anthony stayed as far back as he could. He wanted to stay in as long as he could, letting all the other people on his team do the work. Eventually, the numbers dwindled on both sides and eventually, he was the only one left on his side, with Kenny, Marcus, and Zack on the other side.
"Oh fuck…" Anthony swore and the balls came coming at him all at once. He tried to dodge them, but it was a loss as those three hit him all at once and it didn't stop, even once he was already down.
The three of them all laughed as Anthony fell to the ground. Zack offered a hand. "Did you even try?"
"That's the sad part," Kenny added as Anthony stood to his feet. "He was. That was his best."
Finally, the coach sounded the whistle and they all went to the locker rooms to shower and get changed in time for their next class. Anthony went over to his locker and was putting his combination in, but was shoved out of the way by Zack going to his.
"What gives?!" Anthony was pissed off. "Since when are you two buddies with Kenny?" It didn't take a genius to see that there was something there. Especially after that in class.
"We were all hanging out this summer," Zack said. "You weren't around and you know, he's got some cool moves."
"What?"
"You know the moves that you know but you never show us."
"He doesn't do the right stuff," Anthony thought about all the stuff he overheard his dad talking about. "Karate is for—"
"Defense only," Marcus mocked.
"Just admit it, LaPusso," Zack got up in Anthony's face.
"What are you talking about?"
"Kenny and I, you know we got to talking…" Zack looked to Kenny's direction as he came over. "And he had some interesting things to say."
"Like what?"
"How I kicked your ass in the bathroom during the summer," Kenny chimed in. "And you were crying like a baby,"
"I was not!"
"Just admit it," Kenny grabbed him, holding him against the lockers as suddenly the locker room was close to empty. "You don't know karate." He held up his fist as if to punch him.
Anthony flinched, shutting his eyes. "Okay, okay!" He was trembling. "I don't know karate, I was lying! Are you happy?"
Kenny let go of him of him and then opened the door to Anthony's locker. He grabbed his clothes and threw them in a puddle of water that was on the floor from the showers being used. "Now I am,"
Zack and Marcus went with Kenny out of the locker room as Anthony scrambled over to his now soaked clothes.
I guess he got his wish. Now Anthony knew how it felt.
A/N: That's the next chapter! Man, I'm on a roll right now. But anyways, I think Anthony's so-called friends turning on him is inevitable. Clearly they were never his friends. So Anthony finds himself alone and now he knows what it was like for Kenny. And it will probably get worse before it gets better.
