Chapter 2: The Time Lords

It was a Saturday and that meant many things. For a normal fourteen-year-old, it meant sleeping in. For Izzy Foreman, it meant getting up at 6 AM to get ready to hang out with Sloane and Stormageddon. This time, just like every Saturday, they had a specific reason to hang out. Izzy let out a groan and crawled out of bed. First came a shower, then skincare, then other necessary morning self-care things before changing into an ensemble that included red high-top Chucks, a white T-shirt that had a cat's head with an owl's body and the word 'MEOWL' on it, a forest green hoodie with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, and a pair of distressed black skinny jeans. By the time she was ready, she was met with the enticing sizzle and delightful aroma of sausage and eggs being fried in the kitchen. She headed over to the kitchen and entered in time to see Basil getting out plates for himself and for his daughter. Jack was in his high-chair eating some freshly-cut fruit with his little baby hands. Izzy grumbled under her breath as she made herself a cup of coffee using the French press and water that Basil had been heating in the kettle. "You know, you shouldn't be drinking coffee." Basil pointed out. "You're fourteen."

"Well, you and Mum shouldn't shag on the table because that's where we eat, but here we are." Izzy shot back.

"Isabel Carmen Foreman..." Basil said warningly, though his face was slightly flushed. His daughter had accidentally walked in on him and his wife at a highly inopportune moment in the kitchen the week before.

Izzy said nothing. She simply served herself up some breakfast. On the way over to her seat, she gently ruffled Jack's fluffy, blonde hair. She sat down and looked at her baby brother. "Enjoying your breakfast, Jack-Jack?"

The baby simply smiled at her. Izzy let out a sigh and looked at her dad. "Think he'll start talking soon?"

"It shouldn't be too long." Basil replied. "It's not abnormal for a child his age to have not said his first words yet."

Izzy shrugged and said, "Whatever. I hope Mum doesn't miss it. She's probably asleep over in New York."

Time zones were a crazy thing. Clara was over in America, doing something that had something to do with her books. She had been pretty successful as an author in the past year or so. She said that she would be back on Monday. In the mean time, Izzy had things to do. Her homework would have to wait until tomorrow. Once breakfast was done, the fourteen-year-old helped her father wash the dishes and clean up Jack. There was a quick nappy change and then Izzy carefully placed and secured her baby brother in his car-seat. She disappeared into her room briefly before returning with her guitar case. With one hand, she carried her guitar case and with the other, she carried Jack's car-seat. Basil was carrying Izzy's amplifier, which was not a particularly big or heavy one. The foureen-year-old went out to Basil's blue 2008 Honda Jazz, which was affectionately known as Sexy. Izzy loaded her brother and guitar case into the car while Basil loaded the amp. Once everything was secure, they drove off. Surprisingly, the traffic wasn't that bad. It wasn't that long before they arrived at an empty building. Standing outside were Stormageddon and Sloane, with the former empty-handed and the latter holding the case to her bass. Between Izzy and her two friends, they used a combination of their allowance and money made from odd jobs- Stormageddon made some money walking dogs- to pay for the use of the building to practice. The taller girl got out of the car and asked, "Everything set up already?"

Stormageddon nodded and said, "I already have my drums set up inside."

"Okay." Izzy replied. "Mind helping me get my amp out?"

The teens were able to get the amp out and into the building. Izzy went back to Sexy to get her guitar. She looked at her father and asked, "Want to watch?"

Basil smiled and said, "I wouldn't miss it."

After Jack and his associated bag of baby things were removed from the car, Basil made sure to lock it securely before following the teens into the building. By the time he got in there, everything was set up. "Okay," Izzy said, "Sound check!"

All three of the teens checked to make sure everything worked first. Basil always seemed to enjoy watching them practice. Izzy, Sloane, and Stormageddon had named the band the Time Lords and their music style was essentially punk rock with a sci-fi twist. Once they were ready, Izzy called out, "All right! One, two, three- let's go!"

They started playing one of their original songs, Run. It was a song about an ordinary shop girl who met a time-travelling alien and ran away to travel with him. In Izzy's opinion, it was quite good. She started her opening guitar riff before the others joined in. She then broke into song.

"Ordinary girl, in a boring-ass world

Every day, all the same

Blonde hair, brown eyes,

Life was no surprise

And suddenly, he came rolling in,

Defeating evil maniquins

Just as she stopped to turn away,

He called her back to say:

Run away with me through time and space,

No longer trapped in the human race!

Run away with me, through history!

Think of everything that you might see!

Run with me, through space and time,

We can be great, partners in crime!

Oh-oh!"

The song continued for a few minutes and several more verses before finally ending. Basil had Jack balanced on his hip, so he couldn't clap. The baby, on the other hand, giggled and clapped. The Time Lords went through several more songs, some covers and some original songs. Before they knew it, it was noon. Stormageddon's dad, Craig, pulled up in his minivan and helped his son pack up his drum set. Sloane got into the vehicle as well, to be taken home because her dad worked on Saturdays and needed to rest. After Basil, Izzy, and Jack were safely in Sexy, the doctor looked over at his daughter and asked, "So, where do you want to go? How about that new vegan place?"

Izzy grimaced. "Hell no. I drove my bike past that place once and I almost got angry-mobbed for wearing a wool jumper."

Basil rolled his eyes. "Isabel, 'angry-mobbed' isn't a word. Also, language."

"You're going to get mad at me for saying 'hell' when 'ass' is in more than one the Time Lords' songs?" Izzy groaned.

"It's used in a punk rock song." Basil replied. "That's different."

Izzy simply rolled her eyes back and said, "Let's just go get pizza. Real pizza, not that vegan cardboard crap!"

"Isabel-"

"Just don't, Dad!" Izzy groaned. "I'm fourteen! I'm allowed to say 'crap'! You said worse things in the 80s!"

"Yes, well, that was the 80s." Basil said, starting the car and beginning to drive. "Everyone swore in the 80s."

"Dad..." Izzy groaned again.

"Welllll..." Basil said thoughtfully, "I suppose 'crap' doesn't really count as swearing at your age."

"Thank you." Izzy said decisively. "Now, let's go get that pizza! I'm hungry as fu-"

"Isabel, if you finish that sentence, especially in front of your brother, I'm taking you to that vegan place and we're getting vegan pizza." Basil said firmly.

"Fiiiiiiine!" Izzy groaned.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I know that this is a short chapter, but this seemed like an ideal place to finish the chapter.
