Wade watched her as she walked off the witness stand and out into the hallway. She'd stuck to her story and Cole hadn't been able to rattle her. He closed his eyes, covering his hands with his face as he relived the attack in his mind. He had made sure she lived to send a message to Irvine. Now he was regretting that decision. He looked out at the galley and saw the people on Tricia's side. He knew who they were from his stalking of her. He looked up as she walked back in. He smirked when she looked his way and then turned his attention back to the front. He just might have to pay her another visit when this was all over.
"All rise." The bailiff said. "Court is back in session."
"Be seated." The judge said. "Mr. Orton, call your next witness."
"I call Dr. Stephanie McMahon to the stand." Stephanie got up and was sworn in as she took the stand. "Dr. McMahon, can you explain the injuries Ms. Irvine sustained?"
"Tricia had welt marks on her back from an obvious belt being used. She had marks on her face where she was hit. And she had marks on her wrists from something that cut into them."
"Was there rape trauma?"
"Yes. She had tearing from vaginal trauma and there was DNA on her."
"And did the DNA match anyone?"
"Yes sir. It came back a positive match to Mr. Barrett."
"Thank you." Randy said as he took his seat.
"Your witness Mr. Cole." The judge said.
"Dr. McMahon, couldn't Mr. Barrett's DNA got on Ms. Irvine through consensual sex?"
"Yes, of course it could have."
"So, all of Ms. Irvine's injuries could have come from rough, consensual sex right?"
"No. The injuries Ms. Irvine suffered couldn't have been consensual. They were too severe."
"How so?"
"Well the marks from the belt. They were too severe. No matter how rough someone liked sex, they couldn't and wouldn't agree to be beaten like that with a belt. We cleaned them up and put some dressing on them but they will leave scars. And that's why no one would agree to that."
"Nothing further."
"You may step down." The judge said. "Mr. Orton, your next witness."
"I call Layla El to the stand." He waited while she was sworn in. "Ms. El, what is your involvement in this case?"
"I dated Mr. Barrett."
"And how was your relationship with Mr. Barrett?"
"We dated for about a year."
"And how was the relationship? Was it a good one?"
"In the beginning. He was kind and sweet. But I soon learned he had a nasty temper. When I did break up with him, he broke into my apartment one night."
"Objection. Relevance?"
"Your honor, I'm trying to establish that Mr. Barrett has a history of violence."
"Overruled but make your point, Mr. Orton."
"Ms. El, can you tell the court what happened then?"
"He told me that I would always be his and that nobody would want me when he got done with me. He forced me to give him oral sex and then he...he took one of my kitchen knives and heated it on the stove and he...branded me with it."
"What happened when he did this?"
"I ran from him. We ended our relationship and I moved away."
"Nothing further." He said sitting down.
"Ms. El, if Mr. Barrett was so obsessed with you being his, then why did he never find you when you left. In fact, isn't today the first time he's seen you since you broke up?"
"Since the day he branded me, yes. Since the day we broke up, no."
"Nothing further." He said sitting down. "But I reserve the right to re-question the witness later."
"So noted." He said before turning to her. "You may step down." The judge said to her. "Mr. Orton, you next witness."
"I call AJ Lee to the stand." He said as she walked to the stand and was sworn in. "Ms. Lee, can you tell the court what your relationship is to this case?"
"Kaitlyn was my sister."
"And did Kaitlyn ever tell you about her relationship with Mr. Barrett?"
"She did."
"And what exactly did Kaitlyn tell you about it?"
"Not specifically at first. But as he became more controlling toward her and her fear of him grew she did. She was terrified of him. My boyfriend and I did everything we could to get her away from him sooner."
"Did you help Kaitlyn leave him at one time?"
"Yes. We managed to get her stuff and move her out of their apartment."
"What happened when she moved out?"
"Wade became crazier. He stalked her. He would call the house at all hours demanding she come back to him. He would come on her job and threaten her."
"What happened when he did this?"
"She went back to him. She was afraid of what he would do if she didn't."
"And then what happened?"
"He beat her to death. She had only been back a few days when I got the call that she was dead."
"Objection. Your honor, my client was acquitted of those charges and they have nothing to do with this case."
"I'm trying to establish a pattern."
"Overruled but move on Mr. Orton. You've made your point."
"Nothing further." Randy said as AJ stepped down from the stand. "I call Chris Irvine to the stand."
Randy stood up as Chris took the stand. "Mr. Irvine, what did Mr. Barrett say to you on the day he was acquitted of Kaitlyn's death?"
"He told me that I hadn't heard the last of him."
"And during the trial, didn't he threaten you and your family?"
"Yes, he did."
"And what exactly where the threats?"
"He told me that when I least expected it, he'd take everything I loved away from me. And once he did that and I had nothing left to live for, he'd put a bullet in my head."
"Do you think he meant going after your sister?" Randy asked.
"Objection. Speculation."
"I'll rephrase." Randy said to him. "Mr. Irvine, in your opinion, do you think he meant going after your sister?"
"I wasn't sure what he meant at the time. But yeah, I believe he meant going after Tricia."
"Thank you." Randy said sitting down.
"Mr. Cole, your witness."
"Mr. Irvine, how much do you know about your sister's love life?"
"I know everyone she's dated."
"Do you know all the men she's slept with?"
"Knowing my sister, most likely yes."
"And why is that?"
"Because my sister isn't the type to sleep with anyone. She dates the guys she sleeps with."
"So you know about all of them?"
"Objection, relevance?"
"Your honor, I'm trying to establish that despite Mr. Irvine's claim, he doesn't know everything about his sister. Including the guys she sleeps with."
"Overruled but make your point Mr. Cole."
"I'll rephrase. Is it possible that she's had sex with someone you don't know about ?"
"I guess it's possible." Chris replied.
"Thank you." He said sitting down.
"You may step down Mr. Irvine." The judge said to him. He looked at the courtroom. "I think we've had enough for today. Court is adjourned until tomorrow at nine am." He banged his gavel and everyone headed out of the court house. It had been a trying day and everyone knew the rest of the trial would be too.
