Chapter 7

I avoided Light for the next couple of weeks even though my body ached to be near him. Just the thought of feeling his gentle touch brought pings of emptiness and a burn to my throat. He needed to be able to focus on what is going to happen and I have been far too big of a distraction. If I kept it up he would end up making a mistake. Yet, as I pick my mail off the floor in front of my door I smile seeing the Toho university letter I had been waiting on. Pulling it out I look at my test scores. Perfect across the board. Just as I thought. Reading the admittance letter I nearly roll my eyes from sheer boredom. Seriously, couldn't they have tried to surprise me? It said I was accepted into Toho university, and that at the orientation in a couple of days I will be giving a speech with two other students. Then it went on to give me the information necessary to set up my schedule. Putting the papers back in the packet I walk from my home locking the door behind me. Walking up to the Yagami household I already hear squeals from inside. Of course, those two would be excited at finding out how Light scored and that he would be giving the speech with two other students.

Ringing the bell I wait, shifting the envelope to my left hand as I did. The one to open the door though wasn't Sayu like usual but it was Light. His smile the second his eyes met mine made my breath catch. Why did I want to stay away from him again? I silently question myself as I walk inside. As I slip out of my shoes Light snatches my envelope from me. Walking into the living room with it, making me chase after him. "Hey! Give that back!" I yell to him trying to jump high enough to snatch it from his hand. When I finally give up I puff out my cheeks playfully, and he opens the envelope to read it. His eyes widened either at my test scores or the fact I will be giving a speech with him. From his reaction, Sayu reaches up and takes the papers from him and looks at them as well.

"Whoa! Hey mom! Look at this!" She says running to her mom and handing the papers to her as well. Meanwhile, Light's eyes were locked on me. Feeling my cheeks flush I look up at him and give a nonchalant shrug as if to say what? Didn't expect it?

"Congratulations Kira, well done!" His mom cheers happily as she looks at my results.

"I knew Light was a genius but I had no idea Kira was just as smart!" Sayu comments causing my cheeks to darken even more. "Let's call dad and tell him!"

"Hey uh... Light?" I glance away from him tuning out the happy squeals of the other two. "I'll make sure it's ok but would you mind if I didn't give a speech and just stood up there?"

"It's perfectly fine with me. I know how uncomfortable you are in front of people you don't know."

"Thank you." I smile giving him a hug. One less thing to stress over.

At the entrance ceremony, I couldn't help it. All the cherry blossom petals caught my attention. Holding up my hands I try to catch them giggling. "Light they are so pretty!" I laugh finally catching one and holding it in my hand. Petting the soft and delicate leaf. Light's chuckle from behind me made me turn around and look at him. His smile was handsome as he stood there with his left hand in his pocket. Going up to him I stand beside him. Today my hair was down and I was wearing my black pinstripe slacks a white spaghetti string tank top and a black vest that Light had insisted I button up.

I wasn't too happy about it but eh, Light insisted so I did. Personally, I wanted to wear shorts or something but he wouldn't go for that either. It was all I could do to get him to let me keep my hair down. The pendant he gave me rested between my two keys at my neck and laid over my vest. To be honest, when I looked in the mirror I realized I looked a lot like my mom in this outfit when she gets back from work. That thought alone made my heartache. What did they do when they realized I was gone? Did they do anything at all? Were they worried about me? Did they even care? "You're college students now, that's kind of exciting, I'm filled with joy." At Ryuk's words, it was everything I could do to not roll my eyes at him but I look up at Light who is looking at the entrance to the campus.

"Let's sit together." I tell him finally getting him to look back down at me with a smile.

"Let's."

Walking in with him we find ourselves some seats and I set with my backpack pulled up just enough it can set over the edge of the chair but it still was on my back. Exactly where it should be. For this reason, I kind of liked these uncomfortable chairs even though they didn't let me set like how I'm used to. Throughout the addressing the guy on the stage was doing I was giggling nervously. Light gave me a gentle nudge silently telling me to calm myself. I close my eyes and take in a breath to do so. "Now for the freshmen address Freshmen representative Light Yagami."

"Yes." Light says as he stands up and begins making his way up to the podium.

"Freshmen Representative Hideki Ryuga"

"Oh umm... here." I hear his voice echo before finally seeing him stand, as he too begins walking to the podium. Mumbled whispers begin to sound from the ridiculous name.

"And finally, Freshmen Representative Kira Lake"

"Yes." I answer as Light had, standing up taking note more whispers came from my first name. Of course, yet another obvious outcome that I had been expecting since my first name is the same as the one who kills murderers. Walking up to the podium I put myself between Light and -Hideki- raising my hands so my thumbs link around my bag straps. I try really hard not to fidget from the number of eyes upon me. As Light gives the speech I try to keep my eyes off of him. So I wouldn't just start reciting it oddly in front of everyone. Focusing more on the conversations elsewhere, I hear someone exclaiming how the three of us got perfect scores in all subjects which nearly had me rolling my eyes. My hands itching to unbutton the vest to be more relaxed. I try to keep my mind off of how uncomfortable I am. As Light's speech ends I finally glance at him from the corner of my eyes. "Man the two guys are like total opposites"

"Yeah.."

"The one called Light looks like he is a sheltered genius groomed for success his whole life, while the other one. There's something just not right about him. He's freaking weird."

"He must be what they call a mad genius, coming to the Toho entrance ceremony dressed like that? Unbelievable."

"Either he's crazy or he's just toying with us." Hideki's speech comes to a close as I feel myself shifting from one foot to the other. "And that girl, she looks the part but she seems like she doesn't care at all. How did she get perfect scores?"

"I heard she finished the testing first this year. Only took her like five to seven minutes."

"Whoa! You've got to be kidding!"

The clapping drowned out their talking, as I follow Light with -Hideki- behind me down to the seats that were open for us. Setting in between them I lift my bag back over the chair so I can sit straight. Closing my eyes I sigh showing both of them how bored I really am with all of this.

"Light, Light Yagami, your father is Chief Soichiro Yagami of the NPA, your respect for your father is only maxed by your strong sense of justice. You are planning on joining the police agency when you graduate. Also, you already have experience with how you've helped the police solve cases in the past. Kira Lake, your family is unknown as is your very history. Your birth certificate and background only recently showed up in the systems almost as if you never existed before this year. Even though you are smart and show interest in the judicial system you yourself have not made any further plans on whether if you will yourself join the police agency as well. Now both of you are showing an interest in the Kira case. I am impressed by your abilities and your sense of justice. If you promise not to tell anyone I have important information considering the Kira investigation that I'd like to share with the both of you." Knowing that Light is thinking about whether or not to just ignore him I myself smile hearing his brief intake of breath. As he realizes what this guy is actually getting at from the information I had given him.

"I won't tell anyone." Nodding in agreeance with Light, I fold my hands in my lap.

"What is it?" I ask simply as if I'm still just as bored as I had been a few minutes ago.

"I want to tell you I'm L." He whispers quickly. Perfect, everything still seems to be going pretty well the same as in the anime, only I'm being added into this. Maybe this means that the next few obstacles will still be the same as well. So far him addressing Light, L has proven to me that he wants to use Light as I had expected.

Without even looking at him I try and get Light to calm down by touching his hand lightly before placing my hand over his closed one. Light seems to gather himself with my touch. "If you are who you say you are then you have nothing but my respect and admiration."

"Thank you though the reason why I chose to reveal my identity to you is because I feel you may be of some help to us on the Kira investigation." Hearing him fall silent I sigh finally opening my eyes and looking ahead.

"Hehehe, if this guy is really L as he says he is then consider me impressed." Ryuk laughs to Light who by now is struggling internally bringing about another sigh from me.

"You can count me out. There isn't any proof to me that you are who you say you are let alone that you wouldn't be using this chance as just another ploy. If that is the case for your revealing that would mean that you suspect myself or Light for that matter. Which would also mean there would be no point in me helping you for there would be secrets kept from me and I would not be able to help to the best of my abilities, even if I were interested in doing such. That aside as of right now, I would like to concern myself with my studies before jumping onto a path that would choose my career for me." I calmly say before closing my eyes feeling both of their eyes on me for my calm stature and use of words. Yes, I just showed L that I can quickly come up with a comeback to his ploy and still remain calm as if the matter really doesn't involve me. Another way of attacking and defending just as he was doing.

Walking from the entrance hall with Light I close my eyes. What I told him was true it tells him that his actions didn't catch me off guard nor did that jumble up my brain to make me blind to his attack. While plainly stating I won't have anything to do with him in a nicer manner as my defense. To top it off none of it can be used against me. Ryuk chuckles before speaking. "I didn't think the ceremony would be so interesting."

"Hey, Light.."

"Ya hear that? I think it's your new friend." Ryuk says as we stop, I look at L who was looking at me as if he was debating about calling out to me as well. "Uhh.." But he just moves his gaze to Light. A smile nearly tugs at the corner of my lips. I got under his skin. "Nice meeting you."

"No, the pleasure was mine." He walks away and gets into the nice old car as Watari opens the door for him. Walking with Light up to the car I wait.

"Well... I'm sure I'll see both of you on campus."

"Yeah take care." Light responds watching the car door close before pulling away. "Kira." He says softly to me. Looking up at him I give him a smile. "You sure outclassed me today." He chuckles before we begin walking to the train station.

"What do you mean?" I ask looking ahead. I already knew why but it was nice pretending to be a girl who didn't have much of a clue for a change.

"I mean you responded to the encounter calmly not missing the chance to return the favor whereas I was so tormented even though I had forewarning that I couldn't come up with anything beyond clearing my head and remaining silent."

"Oh, that." I respond to him as we step onto the train. "The only thing about the encounter that had me unnerved was how he made you feel. I guess I got a little upset with him for that, so I decided to react."

"But still, him doing this he was able to attack and defend in one move yet you were able to easily do the same. Out classing me." We set on the train and I sigh.

"I didn't mean to outclass you Light. Honestly, he upset me getting to you like that. I wanted to attack him in the same way he did you."

"But even with you telling him that, he can't do anything to you. You made sure of it. Are you sure you didn't plan your response?"

"I didn't, with knowing he had been watching us he already figured out how quick-witted and clever we can be. So I didn't see a problem in giving him a response like that."

"You thought about all that just in the space of a couple of seconds?"

Walking off the train as it stops I don't even look at him. "Well yeah, I did."

"And you really said it because you could tell he got to me?"

"Yes. Though you kept it more internally so he wouldn't notice it himself since he doesn't know you. But I can tell even now you're on the verge of freaking out." Coming up to my corner I glance at his house before looking at him. "Give me a call okay. I'll give you some time on your own to think." Walking away from him I go to my house and unlock the door. Going up to my computer room I set down and bring up my usual pages re-establishing a hack to Mr. Yagami's phone and shadowing Light's computer before navigating them to my Ipad. Tomorrow I'm planning on going on with my plan of placing cameras and wiretaps in the various hotels, so I can get a deeper look into L. While Light will be thinking about getting closer to him through physical contact I'd rather keep away from him and watch him from afar.

*Light*

Walking into my room and locking the door, thinking about what happened and the conversation with Kira. I go to my desk and set down "Hmm?" Ryuk's voice came as if he were confused as to what I was doing. Clenching my fist, shaking from no longer being able to control the emotions that had been boiling inside of me. I lean forward on my desk putting my hands on my head glaring at everything in front of me. "Damn it he got me!"

"Uh, what do you mean?" Ryuk asks as if he wasn't there to witness everything.

I bang my fists on the desk in an attempt to release some of this frustration. "Damn L, I've never been so humiliated in my life!"

"Hey, why don't you just do the shinigami eye deal? Then you should have no problem killing him right?" The shinigami tries to cheer me up.

"And what good would shinigami eyes do me if this is just a trap? If I kill him and it turns out he's not really L that would be announcing to the real L that I am really Kira."

At this point Ryuk looks like a child who had just been scolded. "eh, sorry"

"Don't think that shinigami killing people and humans killing people are the same thing because they're not. I want nothing more than to kill him but if I do it's like asking to get caught!" Clenching my fist I turn back to my desk. "Unfortunately Kira didn't tell me if this guy is really L or not, and to top it off she calmly returned him the favor. Which if this guy is really L his sights will now be drawn more fully upon her rather than me if he looks enough into it. As he said when he was giving us information about ourselves it is like she just appeared out of the blue recently, which would naturally attract his attention to her. But yet while I was boiling from the whole situation she was calm enough she could think clearly and execute an attack in return."

"Also the death note can only kill someone whose name is written in it so it's not like I can arrange for someone else to kill him." Turning in my chair with my left arm on the desk I look to Ryuk. "It's inconvenient and that's the flaw with the death note." I paused waiting for Ryuk to comment but when he didn't I bring my left hand to my head brushing my knuckles against my forehead. "At first I thought once I found out his name I'd have him die in an accident or kill himself. However, none of that will do me any good unless I know without 100% certainty that this guy is L... No, it's already too late to do anything about it since he's approached me and introduced himself as L. It doesn't matter how sure I am regardless of the cause of death if L dies now, the police are going to suspect me or Kira. I underestimated him, without Kira's warning I never even would have considered the possibility that he would reveal his identity to me on purpose. In fact, even with Kira's warning I never truly believed he would do it."

Crossing my arms I open my eyes from having closed them as I was talking. "He could be telling all the suspects the same thing in fact it doesn't even have to be him. He could have sent a double instead. For L this acts as a solid defense and allows him to confront Kira directly he could defend and attack. Which Kira saw right through but." I pause raising my hands before I continue. "He got me. It was a good move, for both of them." Leaning back in my chair with my elbows against the desk I look down. I am sure I haven't seen the last of Ryuga. He'll keep trying to move in on me playing the absent-minded genius and we'll pretend like nothing's going on.

Laughing at my thought as I think about it. "This is perfect there's no reason for me to be worried. After all, this is proof that they don't have anything on me yet so this whole thing is a contest between L and me." Looking up at Ryuk, I give a smirk. "A match of wits. On the surface, we will be two friendly classmates but in reality, we will actually be investigating each other." Taking in a breath I cross my legs looking up. "This is interesting Ryuga if it's my friendship you want I'll gladly accept it. In time I will earn your trust and once you tell me what I want to know there will be no point in keeping you alive. Then I'll kill you. With my hands if I have to."

Smiling I turn my head to the right. "Yes, and I have my secret weapon. The one who knows everything that you are about to do. She is my ace. And as she proved today, she is just as quick-witted and smart as you or I if not more so. On the plus side, not only is she on my side but at my disposal. And judging by the plan she discussed with me, she is planning something that will greatly help me." Looking at Ryuk to make sure he is following the path of my thoughts. "By saying she wants nothing to do with the investigation so she can focus more on her studies she showed to him that she is smart, clever, and quick-witted but she isn't smart enough that she can slack off when in reality. He doesn't know she didn't even need to study to pass the test with perfect scores. To top things off, she will never betray me. Further proving of how worthy she is of becoming the goddess of my world." Getting up I walk to my window and look out towards her house. "Not even I know exactly what she is planning or if she has even begun. But a part of me is anxious to see what she does."

"Doesn't that mean you rely on her?" Ryuk asks with a chuckle. "Almost as if you need her."

"I don't need her but the help she offers is too good to ignore. Soon there will be a perfect world for us to live in together." Taking off my jacket I toss it onto my bed behind me and pocket both of my hands. "I will do what she's asked of me but I will also do as I would anyway. Knowing her she's already calculated that into her plans." Walking across my room to my closet I grab out a change of clothes and get out of my suit. Before grabbing her death note and a few sheets from my own. Walking out of the house unnoticed I go to her house. Ringing the doorbell once, I look at my watch waiting exactly sixty seconds I ring it again. This time I hear her walking down the stairs before seeing her open her door. Without a word, she steps back letting me in before closing the door behind me. "Thank you for giving me some time to think." I tell her seeing she was still wearing the same outfit she had earlier except for one thing. The vest. This girl someone who is as smart as she is beautiful still acts cute at times. Earlier it shouldn't have surprised me to see her trying to catch the cherry blossom petals as she had but it did. She was still so innocent and is the only thing in this world that invokes these feelings and urges within me.

"No problem Light." she smiles up at me before stepping further into her home. Her way of silently inviting me in as I step up to her. I watch as her cheeks redden nearly rising a laugh from me as I think about what could be on her mind to invoke such a reaction.

"I brought your death note and a few pages from my own like you had asked." I tell her handing her the notebook and pages. She smiles again but I can tell this time her mind was elsewhere.

"Thank you, I just finished the preparations of where to hide it so that no one will find it. Once again you read my mind." Stepping closer my heart skipped as she stepped back, taking another she did the same thing. Reaching out I grab a hold of her turning with her as I push her back against the wall causing her to drop what she had in her arms. Leaning down to her as I place my hands on the wall at both of her sides.

"What's on your mind to get you to back away from me?" I ask her looking into her charcoal eyes for an answer. They soften at my question as her cheeks darken adorably so. An unspoken answer. Pressing my lips against hers, I catch her wrists as she goes to hold onto me pinning them against the wall. This time I will not let her be able to push away from me. Pulling her arms above her head I situate her small wrists so I now held them with my right hand as I trail my left hand down her small form. Hearing a gasp escape from her as I slide my hand under her shirt. I smile against her lips using her gasp to guide my tongue into her mouth and explore her sweet intoxicating taste. As our tongues entwine around each other I run my hand further up along her soft bare skin until I find the laced fabric of her bra. My cheeks redden at the prize I was searching for feeling her wiggle against me as I press my hips into hers, further pinning her against the wall. Cupping my hand around her fully developed right breast. Just from the slight touch, a moan reverberates against my lips as her hips wiggle beneath me. Further bringing forth the forsaken urges I have whenever I am around her. Squeezing her breast and lightly brushing my thumb across her peak her breathing deepens elucidating my body to react with hers. Pulling my lips from her own I kiss from her jaw and down to her neck playfully nipping at her tender flesh causing her breath to catch followed by another low moan. This girl only chooses to be herself around me, she is only ever fully open to me. Nipping her again before sucking on her soft flesh, I am fully prepared to claim the very girl I can't seem to ever get out of my mind.

The only girl I can truly be myself around and still have her accept me. I find myself opening my eyes at the very train of thought. No, I cannot take the very innocence I so dearly love. Not yet anyway. Pulling away from her I force my breathing to steady. Her face was redder than I had ever seen before, even with her labored breathing and her eyes closed. She was still the most beautiful girl I had ever met. I watch as she slowly lowers her hands to pull her shirt straight. "That was punishment for putting distance between us." I tell her before bending down and picking up her death note and the few pages. Handing them back to her as she finally opens her eyes. The look within them showing obviously how she was restraining herself as much as I am right now. "See you tomorrow." I turn and walk out of her house feeling if I didn't there was no way I was going to be able to keep myself from doing that again. Looking down at my hand as I walk into my bedroom I remember the feeling of her well-rounded breast beneath a thin enough fabric she might as well not have been wearing it.

I raise my hand and put it over my eye, my fingers going through my hair. These past few months she has wormed her way not only into my life but she has also rooted herself firmly into my existence. She had not been at school like I expected her to be for the past few days but according to her teachers, she was still keeping herself at the top of the class. What could she be doing? They said that work was keeping her away and they were being lenient because it was common that students had to work their way through college, but I knew she didn't need the money to be able to pay for school. Walking to her house I ring the bell then as always count sixty seconds on my watch before ringing it again. Lately, I've never made it any further than her sitting room and that made me wonder if what I had done made her scared of me. The very thought made my chest ache. Hearing her leaping from the stairs she opens the door smiling as she sees me.

"Come in." She says stepping back and letting me into her house. I take my shoes off as she closes the door. "There is something I want to show you." Is all she said before walking up the stairs. So, the reason why she hasn't been letting me up there is that she's been working on something huh. Well, why am I not surprised. Walking up the stairs I follow her into an empty room that only holds an expensive-looking computer with three screens. What I saw on them made my breath catch in surprise. The far-left computer had a desktop screen that looked like my own, whereas the far right had a black screen with white lines that looked like a layout of a building and a red dot was near the top of it. But the center was what startled me the most, in it was quite a few smaller screens showing different angled images of the same room. There sat people that I recognized one or two as ones who worked cases with my dad in the past. And sitting in an armchair with his feet on the edge and his knees near his chest sat L. There was a little window at the bottom right of the screen that was black with green lines that moved as if it were playing voice.

"What is this Kira?" I asked walking up to the computer as she sets in Indian style on the chair.

"Well this monitor is shadowing your computer, it helps me keep an eye on what you are doing so I can accommodate my plans accordingly." she points to the far left screen. "Then this screen I had hacked into your dad's cell phone and it is now showing his location." she then points at the far right screen. "Now this one is showing the cameras and playing audio in one of the many hotels I have under surveillance." she briefly points to the center monitor before continuing. "This is the task force right now. Like this, I can monitor and record all of their meetings and find out exactly what they are planning." My eyes widen as I look away from the screens then down at her. She's acting so nonchalant about this as if this was an everyday occurrence. She reaches forward and picks up her cup of coffee and takes a drink of it.

"So this is what you've been up to?" How in the world did she accomplish so much in such a short amount of time? This girl… can be just plain scary with how smart she is. That thought makes me even more glad that she is on my side rather than against me. If she were the one leading the investigation against me. I would so have been caught and executed by now. I would have had absolutely no chance of fooling her.
