Chapter 15

"So when should I kill him, if you take me to where he is I can kill him immediately." Rem asks, his odd eyes watching me closely.

Grabbing the bowl I turn around and smile at Rem. "Give me some time to think about it. I'll text Misa tomorrow to let her know when."

"Very well."

"Also, no matter what you can't kill him until I give the order understood?"

"Alright, I'll promise you that. At least where L is concerned."

"Misa, tonight I will have the movie night with you. But you can't just show up like this. I don't want you getting caught. We can talk over the phone on nights like this one. But if I don't answer then that doesn't mean to show up. Remember I'm under surveillance okay."

"Uhh, I guess. At least we can talk rather than just text."

"I would prefer texting because I'm not much of a conversationalist but I guess talking sometimes would be alright. Just remember absolutely no showing up without me telling you it's okay first. I'm a college student on top of being Kira so I am very busy."

"You should so just model and be done with it! You'd make a killing doing it." Smiling I walk past her into the sitting room and set on the couch in Indian style.

"You know, my boyfriend said the same thing to me today. Maybe I should look into it."

She gasps. "You have a boyfriend?!"

"Yeah... He's basically the only one I ever talk to. I avoid everyone else but... We sort of just clicked."

"Ooo tell me everything!"

My cheeks go red even with her insistent annoying girl talk I couldn't help but remember what Light and I have done. "There's nothing to say."

"That's a lie it's so written all over your face!"

"Just put in the movie."

"Okay! But this conversation so isn't over!"

*L*

Holding up a clear Ziploc bag I look at it. "Hair" Setting it down I put up another one. "Snack crumbs" Yes, Light is my very first friend I wasn't lying about that. But something has come to my attention that cannot be ignored. "Hair" Picking up a new Ziploc "Mr. Yagami."

"Huh?"

"If I die within the next few days. Your son's girlfriend is Kira. Hmm, another hair." Mr. Yagami gasps. Am I just being jealous? What proof do I really have? That's just it, there isn't any proof. She's a young girl the fact that she has a friend beyond Light isn't totally inconceivable.

"What did you just say Ryuzaki?!

"Exactly what are you talking about anyway?"

Looking up at a Ziploc of fibers. "If anything happens to me I've asked Watari to make himself available to you so I'm counting on you."

"You've said yourself that there isn't really any chance for her to be the Kira we are after and that you've profiled Kira as a male. And now this? Honestly how much do you suspect my daughter?"

"The truth is I don't even know what to think anymore. I've never been in a situation like this. If Kira and the second Kira are working together right now things are not looking good for me. Given that" I pick up my cup of tea sitting down another bag. "I may not be thinking as clearly as I normally do so I could be wrong." Taking a drink of my tea I can't help but want to protect her but if she is Kira then I can't do that. Right? Than Light's words last night, with how he feels like there is a hole inside his chest when she isn't around? Maybe it's because I've only seen her briefly twice in person on top of watching over video cameras but.. Somehow I have to agree. When I'm not watching her I'm thinking about her. And it's seriously clouding my judgment. "Maybe I only consider her a suspect because we don't have anyone else. But still. If I do happen to be killed soon. Please assume Miss Lake is Kira." I have no choice but to make a sneak attack. This is all a wager now of whether or not she is innocent. And with what Light said I am closer to her weakness than I had been before.

Hearing someone walk in I glance away from the evidence long enough to see Watari. He was looking far paler than usual. I watched as he moved to sit down, something he rarely did around the others. Something's wrong. Turning I see everyone watching him their eyes wide in shock at how he's acting. "Ryuzaki." He says his voice quiet yet he can't even seem to look at me.

"Yes Watari, what is it?"

He took a few moments of silence before he stands and walks over to me holding out a Manila envelope. Taking it I look at the blank front then begin to untwine the back which was held closed by a piece of string and two button-like clasps. "It's from Winchester England." That is all he said which nearly made my heart stop. Hearing the door again I hear Light greet everyone before he too fell silent. Again showing up at the perfect time? Coincidence? Pulling the pages free from the envelope I look to find a Police investigation sheet and its findings. The pictures of Whammy's house were disconcerting. It was reduced to a pile of rubble.

As I continue to read their findings it was apparent that no one had gotten out alive and there was no evidence to prove unlawful acts so it was just marked as a tragic accident. Looking from page to page the names that had been given to the orphans all were listed, not even one of them escaped even the caretaker Roger Ruvie wasn't lucky enough. Could this be linked to the Kira investigation? They were all my successors after all. Bringing my thumb to my lip I chew on the end of it. Light has no way of knowing about the Whammy house and Kira never left the vicinity. If she even leaves the house she just goes to school, is with Light then goes home, unless she goes shopping. The fact is, she is never gone from home very long, and Light was with me the whole time except when he goes home and to school.

There was no actual way for anyone to know the connection between the whammy house and Watari. We've always been careful to never use his real name so how could this have happened? No, there is only one way, an unfortunate accident. But still, you'd think at least one of them would get out alive.

"What is it Ryuzaki?" I hear Light's voice break through my thoughts. Looking at him I place the papers back into the envelope and look at them.

"It seems an orphanage caught fire and was reduced to rubble in England. No one got out alive and from the police investigation there was no sign of foul play." I tell them simply even though I could feel myself begin to shake. Was it really Kira? If it was there was no way for any of the suspects to travel without being caught. Could Kira have already executed a sneak attack on me without my realizing it? And if it was is this a message to me? As if to say... -I know who you are and can kill you at any time. You are just living because I am allowing you to?- No this act is unlike Kira if he did find out about the Whammy house all it would look like is just another orphanage there was no way for anyone to know that my successor was somewhere in those walls.

"I see, that is a terrible unfortunate event." Light's voice clearly showed how shaken he was finding out that no one in the orphanage got out. Light is actually a good guy. With the word orphanage, he knows it was full of kids that met a tragic end.

*Kira*

Just from when Misa visited me I had already set things up so that Light could kill L at any time so I had to tell Light the first chance I had gotten. With an easier method I mean, I could have just come out and said L's name but what fun would that be? Misa and I had talked through the night after the ending of her ridiculous movie about supernatural beings. I was finally able to get her to go home only because I reminded her that she has a shoot scheduled. Which made her squeal and hug me saying I must have been a fan of hers before actually meeting her. Seriously this girl was giving me a headache. Which is odd because I've never even had one before. Walking out of class with Light, holding hands as usual he has been quiet all day which I didn't exactly mind. After dealing with Misa throughout the night I felt too weak to do much of anything. Light hadn't been at home this morning so I figured he was with the task force. Which technically I'm not supposed to know about.

Making our way down the sidewalk towards our next class building I see L sitting on the bench, squeezing Light's hand gently to get his attention he stops walking seeing L look our way, away from his book, and raising a hand in like a wave. "Hey, Light!" He glances at me before dropping his tone back to his usual. "How's it going?"

"Kira, could we see each other later, I need a moment alone with him." Raising up on my toes I place a kiss on his cheek before responding.

"uhh okay." I say watching him walk to L.

As Light stops in front of him, he looks up. "She could stay if she wants." I see another ploy to get me near him. Walking past them deciding I'll give Light a while.

"Never mind that, is it okay for you to even be here? Didn't you say you were afraid to appear in public?"

"I did but then I realized as long as you're not Kira I should be safe." Sighing I pick up my pace to set beneath a Sakura tree that wasn't casting as much of a shadow so I could feel the sun on my skin. Closing my eyes I'm inwardly smiling. By now L should have received word about Whammy House. Which means all of his successors are dead. Meaning once L dies. There is no one that will cause misfortune to Light and his family.

*Light*

"Fact is you and your girlfriend are the only ones on the outside who know I'm L. In the unlikely event that I die in the next few days, I've instructed your father and everyone at Headquarters to assume that your girlfriend is Kira." Damn him! "Besides you told me yourself that you missed having me around at school. So I figured why not come back for a little change of pace. As long as it doesn't kill me college is a lot of fun."

"I have to admit without you around intelligent conversation is hard to come by."

He chuckles. "I see luckily, Kira's there to fill the void." I couldn't help it I smirk with a slight chuckle of my own.

"Well, something like that." Ryuk laughs behind me catching my meaning. Now I don't know. Kira told me she has set things up so that Rem will kill L whenever I give the word. I thought it would be okay for today. No, as soon as I make the decision to kill him he suddenly appears. Almost as if to distract me from my goal. I guess he is just trying to guarantee his safety and with the way things are I am playing right into his hands.

"Hey, do you want to have some cake with me in the cafeteria?" He asks getting up and slipping on his shoes.

"Sure I have a break now anyway." I turn and start walking.

"That's perfect I'm kind of craving shortcake right now."

"Well, let's hope they have it."

"Kira! There you are!" huh? I look behind me to see a blond girl in a black and blue dress run up to Kira. Holding her purse behind her she smiles happily. "I had a photoshoot nearby so I thought I'd come by to see you." Misa you idiot! "Oh, and I had talked with them they said if you want they could snap a few of you as well. Who knows this could be your big chance to join modeling!"

I watch as Kira turns to her and flips her long black hair behind her. Obstructing Misa's view to me for a few seconds. A hint that I need to get out of here. L walks past me up to Kira leaving me so I am able to slip behind a tree. Damn it! And I can't help her otherwise Misa will know! "Misa, I told you I'm not really interested in modeling."

"Oh come on it would be fun! Oh is this the boyfriend you told me about?" Watching from behind the tree I see her look to Ryuzaki. "He looks so different and unique." Wait I've won. Misa can see Ryuzaki's real name! "Hi, there I'm Kira's best friend Misa Amane. Nice to meet you!"

"I'm Hideki Ryuga"

"Huh" She looks at him her eyes a little wider than before. Kira finally closes the gap and grabs a hold of Misa's hand. "Hideki Ryuga?"

"Yeah, He has the exact first and last name as the famous Idol, pretty bizarre huh. You know, now that I think about it how about I do go to that photoshoot and give it a try." Ryuga deciding to come here was a mistake. I watch as Kira looks at him and her eyes go wide. Hearing his chuckling I couldn't understand it. Why the hell is he laughing? Did he notice something? If he's somehow guessed that she's the second Kira there's no way he'd be laughing right now. Right?

"Kira... Thank you for letting her come around. I have been a huge fan of yours since the august issue of 18"

"What? Really? That's so sweet of you!" She responds happily clapping.

"Hey oh my god, isn't that girl Misa Misa?"

"You're right it's her!" Perfect. Fans are now crowding around so I don't have to worry so much about hiding.

"Oh wow, I guess I should have known I'd be spotted with all of these kids around."

"I'm like your biggest fan"

"Keep up the good work."

"Ooh thank you couldn't do it without you… No way! Somebody just touched my butt!"

"This is an outrage! Taking advantage of this situation is unforgivable!" Through the crowd I see Ryuga moving up next to Kira. What is this? "I will personally find whoever is responsible for this."

Misa giggles. "Oh Ryuga, you're so funny." I want Kira to ask Misa what L's real name is as soon as possible but all of these people are in the way.

"Misa! It's time or were you planning on being late again." A woman in a green blazer and brown skirt with her black hair up in a bun walks into the mass of kids.

"I'm sorry Yoshi"

"Let's go!"

"Oh okay" Watching her manager lead Misa off I smile. Perfect now Kira can just give her a call and find out L's real name. "Bye Kira! I hope you can join us!" As the kids clear out I walk up to them and Ryuzaki turns to me.

"Now then perhaps we should get going."

"Yeah... Actually, could you go on ahead? I need to ask Kira something."

"Oh okay, then I'll see you there." He walks slowly past me as I wait before turning and closing the distance between Kira and I. As if knowing what I wanted I see her pull out a pink phone and begin dialing. It's over, it's been fun L. I'm grateful I was the one to discover your name so I could kill you myself. There was a beep as Kira hits send and brings the phone up to her ear with a sigh.

Hearing a ring tone behind me I turn around to see Ryuga holding up a purple cell phone. It wasn't his usual ringer so it's obvious that it was Misa's. He finally answers it. "Yes? Hello?"

"Ryuga?"

"Oh is that you Kira? I guess someone must have dropped this phone in all of the commotion earlier on." He took it! That bastard!

*Kira*

Typical. "Uh yeah, that's Misa's phone. I can give it back to her." I speak as I walk up to him ending the call and holding my hand out for it.

"Oh I see, sure that makes sense." He closes her phone turning to me and setting it in my hand.

"Thank you," I say as he turns around and walks away. Pulling my backpack from my back I unzip it just enough to put the purple cell phone into it then putting the pink one Misa gave me back into my pocket as I hear ringing.

"Yes?.. Yes, I see. So it's done then?" Zipping my bag back up and putting it back on I finally look to Light who was watching L. "I understand"

"Kira, I'm not exactly sure how you'll take this but regarding Misa Amane, there is something that you should know. We've taken her into custody under the suspicion of being the second Kira." Hearing Ryuk laugh I look down with a sigh.

"I see then." I speak quietly.

"We gathered physical evidence from the envelopes sent by the second Kira in particular we recovered hairs and fibers from the masking tape used to seal them. They matched what we found in Misa's room. There would be a public uproar if it got out that she's been apprehended as the second Kira so officially we've charged her manager with drug possession and she's a voluntary witness. But I doubt any of this would get out."

"I see, so you are saying you have wrongfully arrested and incarcerated an innocent person successfully ending her career which in turn can and most likely will get the NPA sewed for it. On top of that, the charges against Misa without them being official or anything you in turn have spun the web of another set in wrongful incarceration especially since witnesses do not become incarcerated. Top things off you are saying all of this as if gloating on all that you have done when really upon another's views you are the bad guy in all of this with Misa and her manager." putting my hands in my pockets I walk up to him stopping next to him. "You've surprised me Ryuga, here I thought you loved justice. Come to find out you are just another criminal using others to play your own game. I hope you know Ryuga under false pretenses you can only keep them for 3 days unless you truly intend to charge Misa with being the second Kira. Of course, you can drag it out with arraignments and stuff but even then I don't see them being in there any longer than a couple of weeks if a month at most." Giggling I glance back at Light. "Let's go, our next class should be starting soon." Taking Light's hand as he walks by me I walk with him back to the school. Once again he was quiet. L had really shaken him up again and that irritates me. Everything I told L just now was the truth and he knows it. It also shows him that his apprehending Misa didn't throw me off. It understandably upset me, yes but I was able to counter his attack without slipping up.

(I know you guys are probably all freaking out about the whammy house thing. But let me explain this okay. Mulling it over throughout the whole time I've been writing this story I've been playing and replaying the second season with Mello and near. There isn't really any openings for me to slide Kira in. In fact the main part of the conflict between Light and near stems from when Near openly asks if the current L had ever been suspected of being Kira even if the charges were later dropped. I would not be able to change that since it is such a key player and everything else that is a large piece of the puzzle there isn't any way that Kira could weasel her way in except for at the end with her ending up shot somehow other than light. This way they are cut from the story and it gives L more incentive to incarcerate Misa as he does in the anime. Looking through what I have written I noticed I had been hinting at this all along so it fits. In the beginning, she states outright she will do everything she can to make sure the second season doesn't happen. And then when his dad is in the hospital she states again that if she has anything to do with it no other misfortune will find Light. The actions of Near and Mello bring a large amount of misfortune. With Mello kidnapping his sister then he in turn loses his dad from all the stress and having given up half his life for the shinigami eyes. Then in the end with near killing him. Also with Misa not around Light, there isn't a reason for light to date that girl in the first season so he wouldn't really know her to be able to run the investigation through her as a ploy. I'm sorry if you don't like how she sent Misa to England to take out the whammy house rather than showing up in Aoyama but it seemed to be the best choice for this story. Hope all you Mello and near lovers don't hate me too much for this.)
