Chapter 28
Digging through Higuchi's bag back at headquarters I find a black notebook. The one he had pulled out and scribbled the name on at Yoshida productions. It had to be it since there were no other notebooks inside. Pulling it out I look at the cover and in large white lettering were the words Death Note. Strange. Opening it up I skim through the names, sure enough, there were names I was familiar with but there were also others I wasn't. Kiara had been brought back here from having woken up and argued with Light about going to the hospital. So as of right now, the screens were upon Kira's floor with Yagami in the room with her as her cousin was still sitting upon the couch silently. What is it with that family? When they had brought her in she agreed that it had been the best decision to not take her to the hospital but after that, she hasn't said a word or even looked the least bit interested in her cousin's condition.
I hear as Light comes up behind me setting down into his usual chair as he pulls the notebook from my hands while I am in thought. Kiara has a fake birth certificate and background. Now she has a family member here who had been -looking- for her. Kiara's personality is similar to Light's and even my own which was another reason why I had thought she was Kira. But most of the time since we had installed the surveillance in her room she usually sat there in silence. Now her cousin is just sitting there in silence but when Kiara's attention would be drawn to the one unconscious by giving away even a slight eye movement. Her cousin did not. It was as if this didn't involve her. As if the one unconscious wasn't even family.
For some reason. This bothered me. I wasn't even her family and I was worried which is why I had the surveillance on so I could see her. Kiara was now laying on her bed, her hair had been sponged clean. The wound they had found hadn't been that bad but what has me worried is, if she has a concussion she shouldn't be sleeping. But she had fallen unconscious before we ever got to her. Maybe we should have pulled her from the trunk before then. "Ryuzaki." I hear Light's voice bringing me out of my thoughts so I was now looking to him.
"Yes?"
"I was cross-reverencing the names in here to see if they match with deaths. A lot of them do but there are others that don't."
Rolling my chair over to him I look at the names. "Like which names?"
I watch as he flips to the third to last page that had been written on and pointed. Believe it or not, there was Kiara's real name. "But she's not dead." I say before I could catch myself.
"Exactly, so this can't be how he was killing. Maybe he was just imagining their deaths."
"Or maybe she can't be killed by this thing." I say taking the book from him and holding it up. "Do a thorough analysis on this." Hearing Aizawa walk up behind me and take the book he walks back to the table I had Watari set up.
"Ryuzaki do you even know what you are saying?"
"Hmm... How to use it. It says The human whose name is written in this notebook... Shall die. This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when they are writing his or her name. Therefore the people sharing the same name will not be affected. If the cause of death is written within forty seconds of the person's name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified then the person will simply die of a heart attack." Setting up my used creamer cups I stack them listening to him. "After writing the cause of death details of the death should be written in the next six minutes and forty seconds." He falls silent for a few moments before continuing. "As well the back cover has some more instructions of how to use it. There are two more rules. One of them is if you make this note unusable by tearing it up or burning it. All the humans who have touched the note till then will die."
"What?! Is that really true Aizawa?"
"Yeah, that's what it says." So if a human's name is written in that notebook they will die. Then why is Kiara's name in it and she is still living? This fact cannot be ignored. Either this notebook is to distract us from the true way Kira kills or... Kiara isn't human.
"And then, there is this last rule. According to these instructions at the back of the notebook. If the person using the note fails to consecutively write names of people to be killed within 13 days of each other then the user will die."
"Wait a second if that's true then that means Kiara and Misa Misa are completely cleared doesn't it?"
"Hmm, now that you mention it that's right. Kiara and Misa were detained for more than 50 days and then they are still under surveillance. If either of them had been Kira then there would be no way they'd still be alive by now." Aizawa says.
"Wow, that's great news isn't it chief?"
"Yeah.." If this notebook can in fact kill the human whose name is written in it then that would mean there are two maybe more out there. But if the human whose name is written within it will die then how is Kiara still living? She's human, isn't she? If she isn't would that also mean her cousin isn't as well? Looking back up to the surveillance screen of their room I watch as Kiara finally begins to stir and again her cousin doesn't even lookup. If she isn't human, wouldn't that raise more questions rather than enlighten us with answers?
"Ryuzaki, Miss Amane, and Miss Lake have both been cleared of suspicion they shouldn't be under surveillance any longer." Aizawa states to me.
"That's right it's crystal clear." Matsuda agrees.
"I suppose you're right." I go to place another empty creamer cup onto the stack. "I understand but please accept my apologies for all the trouble."
"Thank goodness." Yagami says as he walks up to Light and places his hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah but." Light stands. "We still can't say we have solved this case until we've figured out everything. Like why is Kiara's name in the notebook and she isn't dead."
"Yes, you are right." I pause before finally looking away from my cream cup stack to Light. "It's time you tell us what you know about Kiara."
"I'm sorry but that's best left up to her." Perfect response. He doesn't wish to betray her trust just as Matsuda doesn't.
"Left up to me for what?" I hear her weak voice coming from the stairs. Looking over as the others do I see Kiara and her cousin stepping down off of them."
*Kiara*
Walking over to Light I smile at him before setting down in the seat he was standing in front of as he moves out of the way. "Should you really be up and moving?" I hear him ask causing me to smile again.
"She will be fine." The girl that had been in my room says walking over to us as well watching Light.
"She's right. I heal quickly." I say knowing that they had already noticed how quickly I heal but then again that was after consuming Light's blood. The question remains though. Who is this girl?
"Perfect timing Kiara. Will you answer my question?" Ryuzaki asks now looking at his stack of used cream cups.
"I will if I can." That is all I say grabbing a hold of the chair's arms and lifting myself up, taking note that my arms don't hurt anymore. Folding my legs beneath me in Indian style I rest my back against the back of the chair.
"This notebook is supposed to kill any human whose name is written within it. Why is yours in it and you are still here… Unless Kira Lake isn't your real name as you've been claiming." Smiling I look down folding my hands in my lap trying to think of the best way to word his answer.
"Her real name is indeed Kira Lake." The girl answers for me. "And the other answer to that should be an obvious one." Who is she?!
Looking up I watch her curiously. "Who are you?" I ask causing all of them to look at her. She just smiles at me.
"I am your cousin Aphrodite Damphire pleasure to finally meet you." she says her tone almost a happy one.
"Damphire huh, So you are my mom's twin's daughter."
"Yes."
"Hold on a second. You two are family yet you've never met?" Matsuda asks but before I could say anything Aphrodite answers him.
"Yes, our family has kept Kira's existence a secret and in order to do that, she couldn't have any unnecessary contact with anyone. Not even her family. It was necessary to protect her."
"Protect her from what?" Aizawa asks. Yes, from what?
"That is another story." She simply states.
"So am I really to believe that she isn't human?" Ryuzaki questions looking back at me.
"..I.."
"She's not. Would you like proof?" She asks finally sounding actually happy.
"I think that would be necessary yes." Aphrodite giggles before reaching out and touching my head. She then digs her thumb into the sore spot causing me to growl inhumanly and pull away.
"Ouch!" I say standing and glaring at her. It was then I heard gasps coming from all of them but Light. Looking to Ryuzaki's wide eyes. I had my answer. "Light... Are they.."
"Yes, they are."
Lowering my gaze so my bangs cover my eyes I sigh. I'm going to seriously hurt her! "Oh come on, they were bound to find out eventually and as they said your name was written in the notebook so your humanity was already being questioned." She says causing me to snarl at her. She was right though. There wasn't really an out when Ryuzaki asked me that question.
"What are your powers, Kiara?" He asks almost as if he didn't want to believe what he was witnessing.
"I have none beyond the normal stages of energy work."
"Is this true Aphrodite?"
"From what I hear from my mom yes, she hasn't developed any special skills or anything yet." So is that what they are really waiting for?
"Why were you here looking for her if she wasn't supposed to have any contact with the family?"
"We were worried when she hadn't left any messages. So unlike the adults, I went looking for her to make sure she was alright."
"I see. Well as I said there is no reason for Kiara or Misa to stay here any longer. The rules in the notebook are clear. Since both of them are still alive and well then we must assume they are innocent. But do not get the wrong idea, Kiara. Knowing now that you are not human I am unsure if that rule would include you. But as you've said since the beginning I have no evidence against you. I thank you for staying as long as you have."
Raising a brow I move to Ryuzaki before leaning forward and placing a kiss on his cheek. "I just wanted you to say something like that. You are forgiven besides your company hasn't been that bad." Giggling I step back seeing him touch his cheek as if he couldn't believe what I had just done.
"Thank you."
"If I'm allowed to I would still like to come and visit all of you anytime."
"Unlike Misa, you will always have a place here." He says sending a shock through me although Aphrodite just giggles.
"Sounds like someone is in love with you cousin." If I wasn't seeing things. I could swear I saw his cheeks darken slightly at her words.
"If I stay… Would you remove the surveillance cameras from my floor?"
"Yes, they would be removed immediately." Smiling I place my hand gently on his shoulder.
"Then I guess I'll run home and get some things. You can have Watari remove the cameras and wiretaps while I'm away." Turning around I go to walk towards the door.
"Why would you choose to stay?" I hear him ask still in disbelief.
"Because This task force is full of those I care about. L, that does include you." Smiling I take Aphrodite's hand and walk out with her. To go get some things.
Walking up to my house I unlock the door before slipping the keys back into the pocket of my jeans and walking in. There stood Rem in the sitting room. I give him a smile before running up to him and hugging him. "Rem! You did fantastically!"
"Are you alright, Kiara?"
"Yes, I'm fine just a few bumps and bruises."
"I'm glad. And as we discussed. Here.." He says handing me the Real notebook. Giggling I take it and hug it close to me.
"Thank you, Rem. You're the best!"
"Are you sure you are alright?"
"Yeah, why do you ask?"
"You seem different."
"Well, I guess maybe I did hit my head a little hard. No worries though I am fine."
"That is good."
"Now, go on with the next phase of the plan. They all have touched the few pages of the fake death note that are actually real."
"If you are sure." I turn around to go upstairs pausing before turning around to look at him again.
"I am. Oh and Rem."
"What is it?"
"Thanks to that fake notebook. Misa has been completely cleared. You did outstandingly well."
"Thank you." He says before phasing through the wall leaving to go to the task force headquarters.
"You know, you're mother would be proud of you Kira."
"What do you mean?" I ask as I walk up the stairs and into my bedroom.
"From what I can tell you planned things so foolproof that even though you were abducted it still went off without a hitch. You will be a fine leader when you take her throne."
"I see, so while I've been gone they actually gave it to her?"
"Yes, it was an obvious decision. She did lead the War that saved the realms."
"So I hear. Well if she'd be proud then I'm happy." I reach into my closet and pull clothes out tossing them onto the bed after setting the death note down upon the bed as well. "But what do you mean when I take her throne?"
"I mean exactly that. And when that happens I will be your second. It's already been predetermined."
"I'm sorry to say this but, I'm not leaving."
"What do you mean?!" She practically yells causing my eyes to roll.
"I have a life here, one I am happy living."
"But, they are only human."
"Then I guess you guys can make do without me for another 40 or so years."
"Why?"
"I have no reason to answer that."
"Oh my god, it's Light isn't it?"
"Why would you say that?" I ask as I pull out a duffle bag and begin packing things into it.
"Because he was the only one that wasn't surprised to hear you aren't human. Or with how your eyes glow."
"Look, I love Light as he loves me. There shouldn't be a problem."
"There isn't. The adults did say that you will come back when you are ready to."
"To be honest I don't know how to get back."
"You have to wholeheartedly want to go back then use the same energy you did that got you here."
Pausing I look up at her. "What do you mean?"
"You mean you did this on accident?"
"I was watching death note and fell asleep at the desk the next thing I know I was here."
"You really wished death note was real didn't you?"
"Well, yeah."
"See, you didn't want to be in your parent's mansion anymore by yourself you wanted to come here. So I guess your energy did the work for you."
"Really, I didn't think of that. But then again all I know about energy and stuff is from what I figured out on my own and by use of the internet." I say as I zip up my bag. Ripping a few pages out of the death note I put them inside my pants pocket as I take the book into my computer room to hide it in the same spot as my other death note.
"So the adults seriously didn't tell you anything?!" She asks standing in my doorway waiting for me to walk back to the room.
"Nope, what I know I've figured out on my own."
"Well, it's settled then."
"What's settled?" I ask her as I walk back and grab my bag.
"I'm staying until you go back."
"Why?"
"So I can help you silly. I've watched this anime like a zillion times. Plus, I can teach you how to use your energy at will. Until you know how. I guess I will have to make things easier for you and do what you cannot myself."
Pulling my bag over my shoulder I look at her letting her words sink in. "Why would you do that for me?"
"I am your Second cousin. I am to be at your side besides. Why would I want to stick around the old farts and watch them conduct their business when we have centuries to learn what to do!" She giggles then ruffles my hair playfully. "Now, tell me what you have planned so far before we go back."
