Chapter 31

*Kira*

Smiling as we chose an apartment settled into the busy part of town. Sounds of cars should echo late into the night here but, it was beautiful. Fully furnished so I didn't have to focus on finding furniture for this little place. But, what caught me was standing in the living room. Realizing now we were in the same apartment Light and Misa used in the anime. I was filled with a confusing emotion. Up until now, I was always happy when things followed the anime but, I found myself unhappy to be in this very apartment. Could I actually be jealous of the animated Misa? Shaking my head I toss my bags on the couch before stretching my arms above my head. I walk into the kitchen leaving Light to situate his things. Flipping through the cupboards and then the fridge I find myself shaking my head. I shall have to buy everything Light will need. I had already stopped by the house and grabbed everything of mine excluding the computer appliances. Which, I had been a little irritated to find my cousin, sitting at the table drinking my coffee. Yet, I left it there for her anyway saying. "I'll just pick up more." I probably should have established the hacks into HQ then but I was a bit preoccupied.

I wanted to hurry up, grab my things, and come here with Light. Aphrodite was doing well, keeping up with the profile of Kira. She wasn't killing criminals that ranked too low either. When I had gone into my computer room to grab the death notes I noticed she had already started pinning things up on the walls. Previous criminals killed attached to the things they had done. She had everything set up so she knew exactly which type of criminals should die. I couldn't say that I liked the thought of her filling the walls with those things but I could only guess she wouldn't have done so if she thought she couldn't hide them at a moment's notice. She was doing well enough anyway I gave her a few more pieces of death note to keep hidden so she wouldn't run low. Her keeping up with the usual killings would give Light enough time to focus on his studies without having to balance school, Kira, and the task force all at once. Meanwhile, since we are now in this apartment I could always help by looking up criminals that have yet to be caught and figure out names and faces so that they too will meet justice.

Smiling to myself as I feel arms wrap around my waist and pull me against a warm chest. Light's scent wafting around me even before I felt his lips brush against my ear. Closing my eyes I find myself leaning back against him. "This is a new beginning, we will create our world together without any obstacles." Yes, he was right. Moving in here wasn't all about us being together under one roof. We needed to seize the moment and get off under the thumbs of L so we can build his world. Turning in his arms I wrap mine over his shoulders as I press my lips against his. Light's hands move down to my rear and lifts me so my feet were no longer touching the floor. In a few quick steps, I find my butt touching the cold surface of the counter as his hand sifts into my hair. "Let's break in this apartment." He smirks with his words that were more meant as a statement then an order, though it is clear. As his free hand reaches up and pulls my shirt up and over my head, yes, it's clear. I have no choice even if I wished to argue. Smirking I reach forward and pull on the hem of his own shirt to remove it so I may more fully touch him without the hindrance.

*L*

Last night I couldn't help but continue to watch them sleep. Light's phone conversation with Amane plagued my mind. As for Kiara, last night proved now more than ever that she wasn't human. She had drained Light of blood in their intimate actions. The two holes on his neck seemed to have healed completely since then and the morning, which I couldn't quite figure out. Although this would explain Light's actions while Kiara was in confinement and she had said she was thirsty.

*~ Thinking back~*

"No!" I watch as Light yanks himself away from his dad's touch. "She needs to see me! Before.."

"Before what?" I ask now curious as to why.

"L...Light.." I hear her quiet voice turning back she was now setting up rubbing her head with her eyes closed. Her hat had fallen off from her fall. Did she know that Light is here? "I..I'll be... Alright.." she speaks though her voice is cracking and she seems to be fighting to catch her breath. "I.. Promised... You... Remember.." Promised? Looking back to Light seeing he was watching the screen. Though his eyes still gave off his worry for her, he was calmed down.

"Ryuzaki. Can I speak to her over the microphone?"

"I don't see why not" In fact I'm curious about what will be said. Turning the microphone for him as he walks up to it and leans forward to speak.

"Kira." She gives a gasp hearing him speak to her before a small faint smile appears.

"You also promised me that you would eat like you should. Have you been?" She answers with a shake of her head. My eyes widening. That's right! When she wasn't at Light's house for supper she never ate. And even what they found in her house she kept no food, there is no telling how long it's been since she last ate. "You need to stay strong. Will you... Please eat for me? I'll see if they'll at least give you some hot tea. Earl grey right?"

I watch as she shrugs and he laughs. "That's right the last time I gave you tea you acted as if you've never had it before. Did you like it?" She nods then smiles, her hands begin patting around her. Watari was still kneeling before her.

"M. My... hat.."

"Oh, here it is." He says picking her hat up for her then gently grabbing her hand and placing the fabric in it. She gives him a smile before tugging it on back over her eyes.

"L. Light.."

"Yes?"

"I.I'm so thirsty." Glancing from the video I look to Light whose eyes had gone wide. What could be going on? They were just talking about things she would drink if not coffee. Her being thirsty shouldn't be of any surprise.

"Watari, leave the cell."

*~ Back to the present~*

It seems Light has known all along what Kiara needs. Her needing not water, coffee, tea, or even food but in fact to intake… Blood. He had either saved Watari at that time by telling him to leave the cell or he had only pulled temptation away from her. Kiara doesn't seem like the kind of person who could attack someone without feeling an amount of regret. So maybe she fights against her nature. During the time we had her house under surveillance she only ate at the Yagami household to be elaborate she held no food for consumption in her house. As she only had enough dishes in her cupboards either for show or with hopes of Light visiting for a meal. The cups she had weren't normal drinking glasses. She only had two coffee cups in the entire house. Probably one for Light as well. From the beginning, I could tell there was something definitely different about her. With how everyone is drawn to her with nothing but thoughts of her well-being and safety. Though I had never once thought seriously about the possibility of her not being human. Why would that be? Also, what is she? She drinks blood as if she were a vampire also vampires give off pheromones to their prey of choice so it is easier for them to draw in their victims. This could explain the attraction that draws everyone she is around to her. But that doesn't explain how even watching her on video could it work. Pheromones are for in-person with those she is around. Pheromones can't travel through devices... Can they?

When the two of them had come down Light as well as Kiara had their bags in their hands as she seemed to be glowing. Unable to keep her eyes off of Light or her cheeks from blushing as he was telling everyone, Mr. Yagami mainly. What their plans were. Everyone had agreed about them going back to school and Mr. Yagami's eyes had softened hearing they were getting an apartment to share. I couldn't help but stare at Light, curious as to what he is planning. Is he just a womanizing cheater or could he really be Kira like I had initially thought... No, the death note and Shinigami had already proven Light couldn't have possibly ever been Kira. Yet, if Light feels the way he tells us he does about Kiara then why… Should I warn Kiara? Or would she just think I am trying to butt in on her life? Being jealous of Light for having her she would no doubt use that emotion against me to find reasons as to why I would be trying to tell her. Light is cheating on you.

Who is to say she doesn't already know? She has always been able to see things more clearly than any of us. To know what is being hidden just from a few minutes of lingering around. If she knows, then why is she still so happy? Could it be, that love really is blind? My chance having been missed as I watched them walk out of the building I couldn't help but feel despair for her. I was now working on a bowl of ice cream as the others were rushing about with the ever-growing numbers of Kira killings. They had never stopped. Not when Kiara and Amane were in confinement and definitely not when Higuchi died and we were now in possession of his death note. Are there really two notebooks out there? Or is the Shinigami telling the truth that the notebook is how Kira has been killing? There has been no reason for any of us to suspect that the Shinigami is lying but. If I were a Shinigami bestowing the power to kill on people would I really care to let those investigating to bring down those very people know exactly how they have been killing? Would it even concern the Shinigami? Shinigami are gods in their own forms. They retrieve human souls all the time, bringing to the surface that they actually kill those humans rather than retrieving their souls would make them the worst murderers of all time. Knowing this, they wouldn't feel any compulsion to try and save lives nor would they feel regret that lives are being taken. No emotions whatsoever about these deaths for they have been killing for who knows how long.

If I were to have the death note tried out it would prove whether if the notebook is indeed real or if the rules are actually false. I had wanted to do such when we had first found the notebook and even had a plan in order to do so. But, it was shot down by Light and his father again. They were actually very picky about who would do the killing and how. It is not like it actually matters, the man would have been executed anyway just after the expiration of the thirteen-day rule and he would have only written another criminal's name that was also due to be executed. All deaths were already preordained but they still had a problem with it. "Ryuzaki." Watari's voice came over the computer just as his screen flashed. Curiously I click the button to speak to him though not at all happy about having my thoughts interrupted.

"Yes, Watari what is it?" I question knowing that by now Watari's voice had drawn the attention of all the other members in the room with me. There was no longer chattering or rustling of papers just dead silence.

"Miss Lake is here. She has requested to see you." Is that so? Requesting to see me? She knows she is allowed here at any time so why openly request admittance?

"Allow her in." I say just before turning in my chair to face the door. It wasn't long until she walked in carrying what looked like a shopping bag. She was smiling but... Not the same one as I had seen over the cameras last night. "It hasn't even been twenty-four hours since you left and already you are visiting." I point out though, I couldn't miss the emotion that flashed in her gaze as she was looking right at me. Did I say something she actually found funny?

"What can I say you are a hard one to stay away from Ryuzaki." She spoke as she pulled the chair Light usually sets in up next to me before setting the bag on the desk. "Let's see.." she mumbled as she dug inside it. "This one is... Dad's" She held up a sandwich container for him to take before she dug again. "Aizawa's" Again another sandwich but it seemed to be a different type than the one she had gotten for Mr. Yagami. "Mogi's" Then finally bringing up one last sandwich and literally turning in her chair to look at him. "Matsu." She smiled. "Tuna, lettuce, pickles on white bread with a side of mini cookies right?" she questioned before Matsuda beamed ecstatically. "Exactly! How did you… Oh never mind. Awesome Kiara!" He laughed taking the food she had brought for him. "You will make an amazing wife." He commented and I could watch her cheeks darken at his words before she shook her head and reached into the bag again. "Ryuzaki." she nearly whispered before she began pulling out what was left in the bag. Chocolate pudding cups, a box of gooey chocolate donuts, a package of chocolate cookies, and one Chocolate, chocolate fudge chunked muffin. "This one's mine." She giggled holding up the muffin and winked at me. "But the rest of this is yours…." she seemed to cut off her words as she looked at me, her eyes soft as if waiting for my approval.

This touched me for some reason. She was only ever so kind to Light so why me? "Thank you." I spoke to her before opening the box of doughnuts pulling one out and dipping it momentarily into my bowl of ice cream. She just seemed to giggle before working on her package. Almost as if she had brought the others lunch so it wouldn't seem weird to only bring me something. I could feel my chest warm as I watched her pull a piece of the muffin off the rest and bring the chocolaty goodness to her mouth. Watari had said she requested only to see me. She never mentioned the others. So did she really only use them to cover up what she really wanted? To eat with me? "Where's Light?" I found myself questioning and her eating paused just before she could take another bite.

"He started classes again this afternoon." She stated plainly and watched as I took a bite of my ice cream-covered doughnut.

"I see, so you are bored?"

"No, I was out of the house getting ready to buy food and stuff when I noticed the time. I figured I have time so why not stop by for a visit?" She giggled softly before finally taking her bite. I see, Light is at school so she was free to visit without his ever-present eyes. Maybe she does know Light is cheating on her. Could the only reason why she has purposefully distanced herself from me, be just because she's with Light? If she knows he's cheating on her she is probably looking for either a friend to confide in and cheer her up. Or she sees herself as free enough to start sparking up new attachments. Though, I can't see Kiara doing that. She would most likely wait until she and Light have officially broken up to create new attachments and move on. So, she probably has remained distant because of Light, and with Light in school, she can openly visit me and not remain so distant.
