Chapter 36

Renewal

"Now Try to kill me!" L proclaimed over his... -worldwide broadcast- in attempts to lure Kira out of hiding.

"All thought this was announced as a worldwide broadcast, the truth is, we are only broadcasting in the Kanto region of Japan."

"In actuality, the first of your victims was a suspect in Shinjuku. Furthermore, his crime was only ever reported inside Japan. I used that information to deduce this much. You are in Japan and your first victim was little more than an experiment, which means you haven't been killing for very long.

Kira Task Force HeadQuarters

Kira has found a way to obtain information from the task force headquarters. There are 141 people on the force who have access to classified information regarding the investigation. I am sure somewhere in this list of police officers and those closest to them. We will find our suspect. L looks up from the papers regarding the task force police officers and tosses them onto the floor next to his computer. Now looking towards the computer that shown a live feed into the task force.

FBI Investigation of Those Involved with the Japanese Police

On December 14th 12 FBI investigators entered Japan.

Here we are on December 19th.

Using prison inmates, Kira conducts experiments manipulating his victim's actions before they die. He needed to know how much control he had over his victims before he could use it against the twelve agents. I suspect that Kira had to be one of the people being investigated by the FBI between the 14th and the 19th of December. In fact, I have no doubt.

An Important Witness Naomi Misora.

"Ray Pember's Fiancé?" L exclaims holding the phone to his right ear looking at the image of Naomi Misora on his laptop. "Naomi Misora." His eyes seem to narrow upon her image. -So it's her. She was working under me. I guess she came to Japan with her fiancé. I heard she was seen with Pember. It is possible that she may have found a lead. If that is the case did Kira manage to get to her first?-

Light Yagami

"Everyone at this point I would like to focus our investigation on only those people who Ray Pember was tailing." L pauses before looking over his left shoulder towards Mr. Yagami, Aizawa, and Matsuda who were staring at L watching his every move and listening to his every word intently. "There are two groups, Deputy director Kitamura as well as Detective Superintendent Yagami and their families." All three of the detectives give sounds of surprise as if they couldn't believe what L was suggesting. "At this stage, I'd like to place wiretaps and surveillance cameras in both households."

"Hey! That's my son that you're talking about, are you honestly telling me that you suspect him?" Mr. Yagami turns towards his left in the chair placed in front of the screens surveying his home and family. L was sitting there with his thumb on his bottom lip staring up at the screens with his feet on the edge of his chair and his knees near his chest.

"I do suspect him, that is why I placed wiretaps and surveillance cameras in your home and the Deputy Director's house."

Enter Kira Lake

"There's a shadow at the window." L pointed out causing Mr. Yagami to gasp and lean forward in his chair, his jaw-dropping as his eyes went wide. When the sliding glass door opens and in walks a girl with nearly impossibly long black hair. On-screen Light turns smiling at her as she smiles back. "It's obvious from those reactions this isn't the first time that girl has been there."

"That is a girl that has been welcomed into the family. But I never would have thought they meet up like this. She seems so… Polite and lives around etiquette."

"What is her name anyway?"

"Her name is Kira Lake."

"Am I suppose to think that is just coincidental?"

What is it about this girl that drives even a part of me to want to do anything to protect her? If she is Thee Kira would I still be able to pursue this investigation? Yes, there is no doubt, if she is Thee Kira she will be brought to justice no matter my feelings.

Contact with Light Yagami and Kira Lake.

L turns first looking at Light and then Kira as he speaks so he may observe their reactions. "I want to tell you I'm L." Light just seems to sit there staring straight ahead of him his hand on his legs as Kira glances from L to Light before returning her glimmer of a gaze forward as well. Her hand moving over to Light's.

The ball bounces as Light and L play tennis. -Relax Light, while it's true Kira hates losing it is also true that most people would rather win than lose. It's human nature- Light sends the ball back to L making him run for the ball. Barely missing the ball as it scores the final point. L slowing to a stop looks towards Light. -look at that he's going for the win.-

Walking from the tennis court leading off of campus beneath some Sakura trees L looks to Light. "I suspect that you Light Yagami are in fact Kira or at least help your girlfriend who I also suspect to be Kira."

Light pauses his walking his right hand gripping onto his gym bag as he looks back at L chuckling. "You think that I'm Kira?"

Setting around Mr. Yagami's hospital bed next to Light, L glances towards Light's girlfriend at the window. Who, was just looking out the window as if she was in her own little world her teeth biting away at her bottom lip. "Yes, in fact, I've told him everything, including that I suspect your girlfriend Kira more than I suspect you. It's true he even knows that I am L."

The moon was high in the sky as they were leaving the hospital a cloud just moving out of the moon's view so it may cast moonlight upon the three of them. Kira almost automatically looking up at the full moon in the night sky with a giggle. "Ryuga, what would it take to get you to believe that I'm not Kira, please isn't there something?" Light says looking at L.

L gets in the car and lifts his head to speak out of the window. "If you are not Kira then the truth will be revealed. Just let things run their course." The car then pulls away. With L now looking towards the front seat.

Kira Murders, using a Television Station

Watching the news go on as his reporters speak telling of Kira and the tapes the producer stands back with his arms crossed smiling frantically as the screens reflect from his glasses. "Our audience ratings should go up 60 no more like 70 percent after this!" Meanwhile, L and the remain Task Force Members have their eyes glued on the television screen watching with horror and confusion as to what is going on. "We understand the second tape contains a message to all the people of the world which we are now going to play."

The screen flashes to a grey one with gothic black letters spelling Kira. "I am Kira, News anchor Mr. Kazuhiko will die of a heart attack at exactly 6 o'clock." L takes in a sudden breath before yelling. "Stop this broadcast! We can't let him finish!" Aizawa tries to get a hold of the Television Station by phone but there was no answer. One of the other task force members rushes down to the Television station and pulls his gun on the glass doors.

You idiots! He thinks just before his heart gives a shuttering slam as if something had grabbed a hold of it in his chest and squeezed with it fighting to even beat. Giving sounds of sudden surprise and pain he drops his gun. "Ukita! You told us that Kira couldn't kill without a name!" Aizawa yells at L from behind him as L is staring at the Television watching the detective die of a heart attack on television.

"From what we've just seen I'd say it's not entirely impossible that Kira can kill with only a face." L speaks as Mr. Yagami drives a bus through the doors of the T.V. Station.

Pulling his gun on the news director. Mr. Yagami shouts at the man causing his eyes to widen in fear. "This is the police! Stop this broadcast now!"

"There is a strong possibility that this Kira is a fake." L states perched on the sitting chair looking at the task force members who were sitting around the coffee table looking at him. "No, we should think of him more as a second Kira." L continues with his fork resting near his lips. "Mr. Yagami, I'd like your permission to ask your son to cooperate with us on this investigation."

Light Yagami is Summoned to Task Force Headquarters.

Light turns from the Television screen looking at L and the task force members. His eyes are serious to go along with his words. "At the very least, I'd say this isn't the Kira we are familiar with." He says as he points his thumb back at the screen.

"That's… almost... How L... I mean Ryuzaki said it." Matsuda breaths in shock looking at Light along with Mr. Yagami and Aizawa stunned that Light was able to come up with the same thing L had.

Staring at the white laptop listening to the second Kira's next video. "when we meet we can confirm our identities by showing our Shinigami to each other." L throws his hands in the air screaming as yet another Kira mentions Shinigami. The task force members gasp in shock at this before L's chair topples over and he hits the floor bouncing.

Looking at the journal page as L speaks. "If there is a message here, written in some code, that only people who have this... Shinigami power can understand. There would be no way for me to decipher it. Still, it would only make sense for us to look into all of the places that were mentioned in the journal."

"Matsuda, when you two are working together I want you to keep a close eye on Light the entire time. It's only a slim chance but if Light is Kira then there is still a possibility that the second Kira would try and contact him somehow. Also Mr. Yagami, please ask Mr. Mogi to start following Light so we can keep tabs on what he is doing. As for Kira, she and Light are together enough Mr. Mogi can simply stand at the corner when they are apart and watch her door as well letting us know when she leaves if not to your household."

Misa Amane Arrested Under Suspicion of Being the Second Kira.

Misa Amane runs up to Kira who was sitting next to a sakura tree at the college causing Kira to stand. "Kira! There you are!"

Standing next to Kira, L positions himself next to her staring at Misa. "Hi, there! I'm Kira's best friend Misa Amane. Nice to meet you!"

"I'm Hideki Ryuga." L says causing Misa's gaze to move towards the top of his head. -huh? Hideki Ryuga?- she thought as Kira put herself in between Misa and L.

Holding up a purple phone smiling oddly with L's eyes wide. As Kira tries calling Misa. "I'm not sure how you are going to take this... But regarding Misa Amane, there is something you should know. We have taken her into custody under the suspicion of being the second Kira. We gathered physical evidence from the envelope sent by the second Kira. In particular hairs and fibers caught on the masking tape used to seal them. They matched what we found in Misa's room."

Misa Amane's Confinement

As the image of Amane was brought up on the screen showing her strapped to a stretcher with a metal eye mask over her face Mr. Yagami shouts. "Ryuzaki! What's the meaning of this?!"

Misa takes in a breath before shouting. "Now hurry up and kill me!" This causes the task force members to turn and look at the screen suddenly in shock. "If you wanted to you could kill me right now couldn't you?!"

"Does this mean that you admit to being the second Kira? Is this the reason you wish to die?

"No, I don't know anything about the second Kira." She whimpers with a tear falling from just beneath the eye mask.

Watari rushes to Misa and ties a gag around her mouth to keep her from biting her tongue.

Kira Lake is Confined

Being walked into a room that smelled of dust and the air was chillier than what she was used to Kira heard the sound of bars as the doors to her cell were opened just before she was led forward. She looks ahead of her as her blindfold and cuffs were removed she rubs her wrists glancing about the room as the barred door was slammed shut. Walking to the bed she runs her fingers over the top of it then looks at them. "What's wrong Kira Lake, the room not to your liking?" L questions over the microphone staring at her screen.

"Kira, are you alright?" L asks watching the screen.

"L. Light." She barely spoke above a whisper before she collapsed to the floor in a heap.

Hearing a gasp from behind him L looks away from the screen to see Light holding the look of horror on his face.

"I just came to see if I can visit Kira." Light said causing L's eyes to narrow upon him.

"I'm sorry but that's impossible."

"Please, I need to see her!" Light yelled frantically.

"Yagami, I think it's best if you escort your son out for the time being. He needs to go calm down."

"No!" Light yanks himself away from his dad. "She needs to see me! Before.."

Two People Released.

"uh uh, I'm not sure how much more of this the two of them can take." Matsuda exclaims in a worried tone.

"Ryuzaki, you have no reason to keep Kira locked up anymore! It's already been 50 days"

The car Yagami was driving pulls off of the road to travel over the dirt and grass beneath the bridge near the river.

Pulling his gun from his holster as he speaks. "I'm going to kill you here and then kill myself." he proclaims as he looks back at Kira and Misa in the back seat.

"What?!" Kira yells panicked. "What are you talking about Mr. Yagami?! Were you lying about seeing me as your daughter?! Was it all… Just a lie?" "Dad you can't!"

"It's too late!" "Kira my daughter." Mr. Yagami clicks back the cocking of his gun glaring at her. "From one murderer to another, I'll see you in hell!" He growls just before pulling the trigger of his gun. Misa yelling at the top of her lungs just before the sound of the gun echoed.

"No! Stop it!"

"It was a convincing performance, as we discussed I will end their confinement immediately."

Kira Lake is summoned to help with the Investigation.

"As for your part in this agreement Kira. You and I will be together 24/7 and that is how we will remain until we have brought Thee Kira to justice."

Light punches L causing L to go flying backward dragging Kira along with him in Misa's room. Just before L sends his foot to Light's face Kira removes her handcuff and attaches it to Light so when he flies back onto the couch L is yanked with him. Causing the couch to topple over as Kira disappears from the room.

"I told you when we first met, I want nothing to do with this investigation." Kira stated in protest.

Light and L move to the elevator as L puts the cuffs into his pocket. "If she's just going to slip out of these, I guess they are pointless."

Yotsuba

"Their deaths have all worked in Yotsuba's favor." Light says looking at the computer screen with L. "Looking back there have been 13 similar deaths in the past three months

Investigation of Yotsuba

"Is Kira someone from Yotstuba, or is Kira simply using Yotsuba. I haven't figured that out yet. We will proceed under the assumption that this is Kira's doing. We will focus on Yotsuba. Please be sure not to act Impulsively out of panic or haste and don't take matters into your own hands."

"I'm an agent with Yoshida Productions! Would you be interested in using Misa Amane as your new spokesperson?!" Matsuda says holding up his manager card and a picture of Misa in front of the Yotsuba group meeting.

"Ryuzaki, are you watching this? The 8 men who came here were having a meeting who'd they'd get Kira to kill for them!"

"If Matsuda dies our suspicions about the Yotsuba group would be confirmed."

"Do you think there is anything I can do to save myself?" Matsuda says over the phone to Ryuzaki as he hides in a stall inside the bathroom of the building. A drop of sweat rolling against his temple from his panic-stricken nerves.

"Matsuda, you idiot."

Kyosuke Higuchi Confirmed to be Kira

"Good luck Misa Misa!" Mogi who was under the guise of Mochi shouts with his arms raised high as Misa was being led to her Yotsuba audition. "I'll be here ready to celebrate when they decide to hire you!"

Walking towards the exit with Light's arm around her. Kira pauses then looks over her shoulder at L. "By the way since I said deal. From the first video of the conference you should take a closer look at Higuchi to me, he was all but saying "I am Kira."

L watching the videos of the conferences held at Yotsuba he leans forward with his thumb pressing into his upper lip. Finally closing his eyes exhaling a sigh. Yes, there is no doubt now. He is Kira.

The Plan to Capture Higuchi is Put into Effect

"So what are you going to do?" Light asks L from behind as L leans forward on his desk. The rest of the task force staring at him impatiently.

"I'm going to trick Higuchi using Sakura TV."

"Like a hidden camera show!" Matsuda says happily.

"Higuchi we've got a problem." Namikawa says into his cell phone with Sakura TV playing in the background. "Turn on the television. Higuchi nestled away in his home leans forward picking up his remote and tunes into Sakura TV.

"So you are saying one of those people is Kira right?" There were two people behind frosted glass. The announcer being one of them was speaking to the other.

"Yes, and I've got a lot of evidence to prove it too." Matsuda says just as the frosted glass crashes over to reveal who he was. Higuchi began grinding his teeth as perspiration rolls down his face.

"It's, It's him!" He throws open his desk drawer and pulls out a gun stuffing it into his handbag. "Why is he still alive?!"

Getting into his car he speeds off. "I see Higuchi, there was no sign of Kiara but I could briefly hear noises from the trunk."

"We're heading after him." Mogi says as he and Aiber crawl into the blue car.

"You in the red car!" A motorcycle officer says as he excels behind Higuchi. "Pull over to the side of the rode Now!"

"Rem, let's make the deal."

"You were speeding." the Officer says as he bends down to look in through the car window. "License please."

"Oh, yeah, no problem." Higuchi says as he reaches into his briefcase using his pen to write in the death note the officer's name. before slamming the gear shift into drive and taking off.

"Higuchi ditched the cop! He's driving away!"

"This is traffic contro…" The police officer suddenly makes sounds of pain and surprise losing control of his motorcycle and ramming into the back of a semi.

"Everyone! It's too dangerous to allow further action by Higuchi. Let's bring him in!" L says over the microphone glaring at the cameras in front of him. "I believe he has the same powers as the Second Kira he is able to kill just by looking at someone's face. Please keep this in mind as you move in to arrest him!"

Stopped by the roadblock Higuchi's eyes widen in fear realizing what is going on. Staring up at the spotlight on the helicopter where Watari was leaning out with a rifle positioned on Higuchi. "Stop right there." He proclaims before shooting out Higuchi's tire.

After slamming into the rode wall Higuchi pulls his gun out and puts it to his own head. "Stay back, Stay back or I'll shoot! I swear!" Watari then takes the chance to shoot the gun out of Higuchi's hand.

Death of Higuchi

Just as the members of the task force get Higuchi to leave his car. Higuchi gives sudden sounds of pain as he collapses onto the pavement causing L's eyes to widen. "He's dead." Came from Yagami.

"Yagami, retrieve his briefcase and for god's sake have someone pry open that trunk!" Reaching in Yagami pulls out a limp and bound Kiara. "She's just unconscious"

At headquarters digging through Higuchi's bag, L finds the Death Note. The very one Higuchi had pulled out and scribbled the name on at Yoshida productions.

"Hmm... How to use it. It says The human whose name is written in this notebook... Shall die. Then there's this last rule If the person using the note fails to consecutively write names of people to be killed within 13 days of each other then the user will die."

Kira Lake and Misa Amane are both still alive. 13 days… Kira's name already being in the notebook is the only problem. L looks to his right where Kira was sitting eating her chocolate-packed muffin smiling happily as L eats the sweets she had brought him.

Kira Lake Left in Critical condition

Aphrodite, Kira's cousin stood in front of all task force members at headquarters. Light has been abducted by criminals who believe Kiara is Kira. They released Misa Amane to retrieve Kiara. She is now on route to them. Their wishes are, Kiara to give them Kira's power and step down as Kira. Otherwise Light will die." She glanced around the room before smiling. "As you know, Kiara does not have Kira's power. She is also weakened from training so if things go south she could very well end up in a critical state and Light's death. I do not know where Misa is leading her so I cannot inform you of where to go. This is truly a precarious situation."

The task force had rushed to the Signal given from the phone Kiara carries with her. Given to her by Misa Amane. They walk into a scene that left heavy hearts. Kira was collapsed on the floor surrounded by dead criminals. The paleness to her skin with no sign of breathing or movement had made them all think the worse. Even Kira's cousin was frozen in spot looking towards the small heap of flesh. It was Yagami who finally walked forward and picked Kiara's body up checking her pulse. "It's faint. We need to get her help." L who was watching on screens the entire time felt his heart sink. Kira was dying.

"Bring her back here. I will have Watari set up the necessary equipment and we will administer medical aid."

Aphrodite stood next to Kira's bed for once looking as sorrowful as L felt. "Her heart aura should cast brightly, almost brighter than the rest. But, there is just nothing there as if…it was stopped or taken. I've never seen anything like it." Never seen anything like it? Then what exactly could we be dealing with? Was this the outcome of her name being written in the Death note?

*Light*

"It's been ten days since we brought Kiara back from that warehouse." Matsuda says as he sets at the small glass top table with Dad, Mogi, and Aizawa.

"According to Ryuzaki and Watari, she hasn't shown signs of movement or any inclination that she is going to wake up any time soon." Aizawa says looking down at the table.

"Yeah that's true.. I wonder if she will be alright." Matsuda continues looking now solely at Aizawa.

"All we can do right now is hope." Dad says, his voice stricken with a sorrowful emotion. Yes, let's hope. I had thought when I planned out that scenario that Kira would only lose some of her memories. But now... It's been nearly two weeks and she is still being held on life support. "Light. How are you holding up?"

Going back to typing on the computer to try and make it seem like I wasn't just lost in thought listening to them I close down the camera's showing Kira. "I'm just fine. We should probably continue with the investigation as if she wasn't.." I pause keeping from saying -near death- or -at death's door- "She wouldn't want us to dwell on her condition. She would see it as being a hindrance to us."

"Ahh. You're right. Kiara would not want to keep us from our work." Dad says before they all go quiet. Ryuzaki is currently in Kira's room sitting on an armchair watching her rest as Watari checks in on her vitals every now and then. Changing out her fluids when they run dry. It seems, even Ryuzaki has lost all drive for this investigation since that day. "Yeah, Kira is still out there somewhere. We will catch him that's a promise."

"Light. This is our first date. Can't you enjoy yourself a little more?" Misa says as she leans forward on the table in a café with her chin resting on her hands staring at Light.

"Misa... Let's move in together."

"huh. You mean it?" She perks up as emotions slide over her gaze excitedly.

"Yeah, I already have an apartment"

"Wait, do you mean the one you were sharing with Kira?"

"We didn't exactly share it. We were only there one night so it was more like... She visited. Aphrodite has already came by and retrieved all of her things."

Misa suddenly stands with her arms shooting to the air. "Yay! Victory is mine! Misa wins!"

"Victory?" Ryuk asks standing behind Misa's chair as she sets down and scoots back up to the table.

"Over Kira." she states happily. As if Kira wasn't laying at death's door. Seriously can this girl be any colder? "It's not a problem really, I know you were just using her knowledge about what was going to happen. You don't need her anymore right?" right? I found myself pausing as memories of the time I have shared with Kira flows through my mind. It seems, the longer I am away from her. The more it hurts to go on with what I had decided.

"Right."

Later that night I found myself on top of the Taskforce headquarters staring out over the city. I am sure I am doing the right thing. I just have to use everything Kira had already set in place. Besides, thanks to her Ryuzaki doesn't even suspect me in the slightest. I might as well be home-free. "Hey, knowing now what Kira had told you about Watari and how you can't kill L. That means you cant settle the score with him right? Things will get pretty boring now that he isn't even keeping track of the case.

Yes, Ryuzaki has given up. Told the task force to go ahead and use this place as our headquarters still if we wish to. He has lost all motivation with Kira's predicament. "That's not true Ryuk." I say as the chilly wind blows my coat tail around me and my hair into my eyes. -From this moment on, I'll show him the creation of the new world. Then once I have done that. I will kill Misa and take Kiara back as my goddess.- It is time to get to work. From glancing at all of Ryuzaki's security I found the roof being practically the only place in the entire building that didn't have cameras or audio feeds. Setting up my temporary workstation knowing that everyone had gone home for the night. -It seems, Kira did one last thing to help me. She successfully pulled L off the Kira case. My only obstacle.- I flip open my death note and begin writing like mad. Catching up on all the work that even Aphrodite had missed. When Kira wakes, I will have gotten rid of everyone that had helped the task force in capturing Higuchi. The rest of the Yotsuba members who had partaken in those meetings will all die as well. I will work to eliminate all crime in this world.
