Chapter 39
I couldn't believe it. Days have passed as I continually reread my entire diary from beginning to end and even watched the anime on my Ipad. Though my diary became extremely vague it continually mentioned an anime named Death note. From the page, that spoke of how I got here, on though wouldn't really put names to anyone in specific but it gave enough of a gist that when I watched the anime I could tell who I had meant. It still wasn't enough for me though. Someone, whoever had wrote me that letter on my USB. Had to of copied my handwriting and wrote those entries. They had to of. I would never, ever, for any reason Kill someone… right? That day those thoughts were overwhelming my mind I couldn't think of anything else. I had gone to Watari's office and requested if I could use the computers on the main floor. Lucien, who had to go somewhere on short notice for some unknown reason was nowhere to be found. So Watari had called him and requested for me so I could use the computers along with view any and all data he had on them. They both were stumped for the most part but I guess Lucien had decided I was still searching for answers. So since this was the Kira Task Force Headquarters I may as well search through all of their findings to familiarize myself with the gaps in my memory.
I am now setting at the center computer reading through all of their information containing the Kira case and anything that was revolving around it. Watari came up behind me and spoke in his usual gentle tone. "Miss Lake. I have made coffee for you." Tearing my eyes away from the computer screen was hard and suddenly I felt how tired they were. Rubbing them briefly to help them focus before looking to the old gentleman with a smile.
"Thank you, Watari." I spoke taking the cup from him and looking back to the computer. First blowing against the steam to help cool the contents before reaching my hand to the keyboard and clicking the down arrow.
"Forgive my intrusion Miss Lake, but you have been here for days staring at the screen. Won't you… Shouldn't you try sleeping sometime?" Concern was evident in his voice which caused me to look back at him again. The emotion in his eyes was remembrance more than worry. Almost as if this whole scenario was déjà vu for him.
"It's alright Watari, I just can't seem to sleep while my mind is still so muddled." I speak softly to him before looking back to the screen. He remained standing behind me almost as if he knew I was going to continue talking. -creepy- "Before I requested to look at all of the task force findings for the Kira case I had read something disturbing. I had to know if it was true so I read my diary and poked around my gadgets. Almost as if I was hoping to disprove everything I was finding out, I felt like I needed to see from an outside source." Bringing my coffee to my lips I take a drink before bowing my head looking down at the dark liquid as I swallow. There wasn't enough chocolate in it but I very well couldn't say that to this nice old man, right? I continue talking deciding I shouldn't tell him. "I kept telling myself, there was no way I could ever be a killer. There was no way I would manipulate others. That I would never have... Dark emotions. Or even no emotions at all. But, according to these documents I very well could have." With my last sentence, I set my coffee down on the desk and begin flipping through the files again. "It seems Lucien, who was called L, Eraldo coil, and even Ryuzaki. Had no evidence against me. But, even he believed I was actually the one killing. I'm not exactly sure if I wasn't the main Kira or even the Second Kira. My journal made no true mention of them. It did, however, speak of how I had killed people even before coming here with the use of a Death Note. As if it meant nothing to me to have caused deaths. It even mentioned things about Ha Ha! I am your executioner... So In the recess of my mind, I began to wonder if I really was this killer. Which I have now found out to be a mass-murdering serial killer."
"So what have you figured out?" The familiar voice spoke up from across the room causing me to turn my chair around and look past Watari who too even looked behind himself. Standing there in the center of the room with his left hand in the pocket of his jeans and his right scratching the back of his messy black hair was Lucien. His dark gaze staring at me as if he wasn't completely all there. As if he was listening but yet, lost in his own thoughts. I tried to give him a smile but it turned into more of a grimace before I glanced down and turned back around.
"I have gone through the MO's that you have come up with and even built some for myself of both the Second Kira and the Original." I brought up my unsaved document where I had been typing notes of my own just so I could even begin to understand what the case was all about. I heard footsteps behind me before another chair was slid over next to me. "Guess you could say I was investigating myself to see if anything I found in my diary could be true." I give him a nervous laugh before enlarging my document. "Anyway, from watching the videos and looking at all the murders to have happened since the beginning. Which was the criminal in Shinjuku, forty-two-year-old Kurou Otaharada. I can conclude that there were indeed three main killers. One of them being this... Kyosuke Higuchi, the previous head of Technology Development at the Yotsuba Corporation." I shrink down my document and lead him over to the death information within another window. "As you already know there is one main description for Kira. They kill murderers and truly hardened criminals. The second Kira mainly focuses on petty criminals mostly those regarding assaults on women. Kyosuke though only used criminals as a cover, he paid no mind to what they were accused of. They could be either petty, under suspicion, or murderers. He didn't care, it was only his front to cover up the deaths he was causing to further his own career. Kyosuke may be out of the picture now but when you look at the other two MO's and travel the deaths from the beginning until let's say, recently. You can see that they haven't really changed. The Original's only differs slightly once all of their original victims were completely removed. I would have to say the ones killing now, are in fact the same Kira and Second Kira as they were before I and this Amane had been detained."
"So what do you suspect your involvement was in all this if those killing now are the same and you not being one of them?" Lucien asks as he leans forward against his knees pressing his thumb against his bottom lip still looking at the computer screen. From what I have found out about Lucien or L. He probably already had an idea of where I was going with this but he just wanted me to say it. Almost as if he was testing me or if he truly was curious about what I thought. Picking my coffee back up I lean back in my chair. Taking a slow drink of the contents I close my eyes. Yeah, it doesn't taste as good as it could but.. it was still drinkable and right now I could use all the caffeine I can get. -With knowing what I do now, there is no doubt that anything I had found previously was indeed true. Whether if I really wanted to believe it or not. I killed people. But as to the reason why.-
"I can only say that I did it to protect someone. From what I have read in both my diary and on your findings that I wasn't the type of person to be used or even manipulated. I would have to say that most of what happened to keep you away from Kira and the second Kira was my planning. Which would mean I am equally as responsible for these deaths as those two are. But, the problem is, there is no real proof beyond the hints in my diary." Opening my eyes I look to Lucien with a small smile seeing he was looking at me now. "I made no actual identification on who Kira or the Second Kira are. But, looking at your investigation I would have to say you had both of them under your nose the entire time."
"Light Yagami and Misa Amane." He names now taking a cup of coffee that Watari had just brought him and began filling it with such an amount of sugar and creamer I couldn't even begin to imagine would taste very good.
"I believe so." I spoke as I watched him. He was more in thought now than I can recall ever seeing him.
"What would you say as to the actions that should be taken to acquire... Evidence on those two?" He mumbles before bringing his drink to his lips as if tasting to see if it was the way he wanted it to be.
"I would have to say since Light is now impersonating you with the full backing of the task force along with Kira having the nations bowing to him… hmm" I bite down on my lip moving my gaze towards the screen in front of me. "It could be possible that we could use my skills to retrieve the evidence we need and even lead him into a scenario that he can't get out of."
"How would we lead someone like him when we no longer have L?" He questions as I watch his shadow placing more sugar into his cup.
*L*
So, she admits to being behind all of what we had to deal with before. No, not exactly admitting. She is figuring this out herself as she is speaking to me now. I can see how the emotions are flying past her gaze as she speaks. She is still having a hard time believing what she is saying but all the facts she has looked at is making it impossible for her to fully deny it. If she is right about Light and Misa then I had really been spot on with my deductions. I was only made to be a fool because of Kira herself. She really is amazing to remain so many steps ahead of me. Maybe, if the Kira that is here now begins her own investigation and moves forward. It is quite possible she would be able to put an end to these murders once and for all. "How would we lead someone like him when we no longer have L?" I ask as I move my attention back to my cup and put more sugar into it. It definitely wasn't sweet enough. -Really, this is the first time in almost four years that I have found myself even semi-interested in the Kira case again. She truly is amazing.-
"Hmm... Well, how about to start with we give him a new opponent. Like you did when you first began your investigation and taunted him on live television. Only this time we would make him think it is a completely different person altogether." Looking towards her I notice a look of determination in her eyes. Almost as if she can nearly taste Kira's capture.
"How are we to do that? Before, L had the backing of the nations' law enforcement agencies so I was able to act freely in the direction of capturing Kira. Now we have no one to help." Truly alone.
"You are speaking nonsense, Lucien. Kira has gotten comfortable. He believes he has won. If we began pushing against him even if just from behind the scenes we will get him to quaver in his standing. Questions will begin to arise within the Taskforce and he will begin doubting himself. He will be put in a position where it's either go along with the rest of them or... They figure out who he really is. If we can make him nervous he will begin to screw up. Leave evidence." What was that? Was that my heart? Did it just give a pound as if I am excited by her words? As if... I'm expecting her to truly bring this long case to a final close? Do I trust her? All of these questions I couldn't really put my finger on the answer to. There are the facts though. Kira Lake was involved in the beginning. She herself kept Kira out of suspicion. She took matters into her own hands and went against me. She made it so my focus was solely on her. She had me running around in circles and nearly made me quit long before her slip into a coma. She was the one I was fighting against this entire time. Meaning... I am alive because of her. The Kira she was protecting would have wanted me dead in the beginning but she used her... Influence to keep me alive for some reason. Isn't that reason enough to trust her if only to a certain degree? Well, whether if I trust her or not isn't the issue at hand. She has proven she wants me alive.
"Alright. How do you propose we start?" I find myself asking her. If anything this case may actually move forward with her at the helm. As for me. I will be able to watch her closely to see if she hadn't somehow retrieved her memories and is only trying to contact Light. She beamed at my question as if I had given her something miraculous. Her eyes lit up as brightly as her beautiful smile. Yes, this is the smile I had hoped to see when I had confronted her and Light at the Toho entrance ceremony. The very one I believed could light up the entire world. I felt my heart give a shuttering pound as my chest felt heavy. She truly is beautiful. More than beautiful. What are the words I am looking for? I silently question myself as I place my thumb against my bottom lip, nipping at my thumbnail. She then turned her chair towards me picking up her cup again before she even began to voice her idea.
