Chapter 41
(Earlier that night before Light went to Misa's room)
"You are quite good at this." Lucien says as I click off the communication. I couldn't help but feel my cheeks heat up from his compliment. "You do know, if you wanted to you could either succeed me or we could work together as L and S in the future." I found myself looking away from the computer towards him with my eyes widening.
"You mean.. Me become S full time?" I had to question. Why else would he suggest it? Have I really found something that all my skills could be used for? Looking back to the computer I bring the applications up onto the large screen in front of us so it now contained everything I had used my call to the Taskforce to cover up what I had really been after. Images from the webcam on their computer streamed in a large video of the now empty room as well as having tapped into their microphone it was now broadcasting all sound to us. I wasn't done yet, but this will give us a full view of what the Task Force is really up to.
"I really do believe." He speaks in a little more than a whisper as he now looks up to the screens I was showing. Even as another one pops up showing I was now liberating information from their files to fill in the gaps from the past four years of Light Yagami being L.
"Well.." I said as I was finishing up the file download and turn my head to look towards Lucien. "It could be fun.. I've spent so long bored out of my mind at home that I've picked up otherwise useless skills such as what I'm doing right now. Nothing really challenges me in my life. So…" Looking back to the computer I begin to hack into the cell phone company so I may bring up Gps of the phones belonging to Light Yagami and Misa Amane. As well as enabling us to listen in on their phone conversations and read their texts. Successfully filling up the last bit of open space on the large screen with six separate smaller windows. Setting them to record I finally lean back in my chair. "So why not fall under my guise of S."
"Yes." He breathes as his thumb pushes against his bottom lip before speaking again. "By the way, why S?"
Setting up I look at him nearly giggling. "If I would have done K for my first name he would have figured it out. As for my last name, L is already taken so I had to think of something. I was out of options really except… My middle name which my mom gave me that is the exact replica of her old nickname."
"Sapphire." He spoke almost as if recalling what was written on my Mom's backpack. I gave him a nod before looking back up to the screen. Earlier when we had pressed that the news article in the obituaries made it to this morning's paper. We had moved temporarily into a hotel late last night. Which seemed oddly familiar to me but then again I could only place it being from the Death Note episodes I had previously watched in my room. On it, L would change hotels every few days. So we had timed our return perfectly until Matsuda the second youngest detective had already come here and rushed through the building searching for us. We had to make it look as if the place had been abandoned for this to work. Deep down, somehow I knew someone would try and find out the truth from Lucien or Watari. It was best if it seemed like with my death they had no more reason to stay here.
Over the video, I had managed to connect during my brief call to the task force I could tell that my death had affected all of them. But, I hadn't been prepared for the amount of pain echoing in Light Yagami's eyes, which was quickly covered by a challenging glare at the computer at some point when I was speaking. There is no doubt. Light Yagami, you are Kira. I didn't know if I was happy about what I was doing or not. I felt a pit of pain building inside of me mixed with triumph that I was going to repay him for his betrayal. "Thank you, Watari." Lucien says bringing me out of my thoughts as I notice Watari had wheeled in a cart full of sweets. Just before he handed me another cup of coffee. Reminding me it was now a waiting game, taking a few cookies and a slice of strawberry shortcake, which I found it hard not to squeal from seeing. I return to our task at hand as I munch down on the cookies before scooping a piece of my cake with my fork and taking a bite. Coffee left temporarily forgotten on the desk as I enjoy my cake and scroll through their progress over the four years.
" 10th of January after I was brought in a coma in Colorado USA, Mary Kenwood, the second daughter of the Kenwood Family dies in a road accident while riding her motorcycle. On the seventh of April Tierri Morello loses his life to liver cancer. He died at a suburban hospital in Paris France with his family by his side."
"Those two were Weddy and Aiber, I had brought them in to help us with the investigation of Yotsuba." Lucien elaborates for me. I vaguely remember those names being mentioned in the information we already had on file. So I continued.
"10th of April, Takeshi Ooi, Masahiko Kida, Suguru Shimura, Eiichi Takahashi, Reiji Namikawa, and Shingo Midou, all members of the Yotsuba Group, Die of heart attacks. L reports to police officials that the deaths of those six men were deeds of Kira. He backed his theory with information from the meetings of death that the six of them used to hold with Higuchi. Rumors then start to spread, causing Yotsuba's share rates to dramatically drop... On the 1st of may, L proposes to the police and the media to withhold information regarding photos and picture images of criminals when reporting their arrests. Within two weeks, this proposal was enacted and Adapted Worldwide. This caused the Data of criminals to start leaking on the internet. By the next month it seems, photos and names of criminals were all over the net as if waiting to be used by Kira."
"Hmm, he's toying with both the judicial system and the people of the world. Saying, there is nothing that you can do so why even try." Lucien says reading over my shoulder as I fall silent.
"I agree, he is playing a cat-and-mouse game to keep anyone still hoping for Kira to be brought to justice interested while showing the rest of the world that he has won. He has pretty well built an empire where he rules supreme. Only he hasn't quite gotten the finishing touches on it yet. There are still criminals in the world as there are still people who do not support him."
"With having those who do not follow his... Law, then he cannot give up the guise of L. He needs my name to be able to continue changing the world." Lucien finished my train of thought causing me to smile at him. You know, maybe he and I aren't that different.
The next few days we've spent them watching the Task Force as they work from that little room. Discussing topics of whom died since their last report, how and when. Light seemed fixated on the computer typing down everything they were saying while running the names that were being mentioned through searches to check their crimes. Nothing actually seemed out of the ordinary beyond... Once they are done with the reports what else do they do? Police agencies around the world have bowed down to Kira so it's not like they go on with their jobs. They just set around mainly hoping something falls into their laps. I didn't know if I should be annoyed that valued detectives were just letting the case they were working on go cold. This could possibly have become more of a hobby to them. Working on the Kira case and functioning at work. It's plausible.
Even though most of the time they are sitting around they do have their main jobs to work around which was proven to me around the third day of watching them when they seemed to come in later. I began to wonder if I should go through with the hassle of placing up surveillance around the entire apartment so I could also watch more than just Misa's phone. Yet, Lucien's previous attempt at surveillance didn't work. Light somehow found a way around them. Which from the anime I watched it was because of a little pencil lead in his door that was broken and the door handle not angled right so he knew someone had been in his room. Then conned Ryuk, his Shinigami, into checking the entire house for cameras and wiretaps. I couldn't help but wonder that if when I came here if I didn't tell him about them beforehand so he could properly prepare and not be taken off guard.
The more I think about this case, the more I begin trying to further understand what I may have done in the situation to lead up to the facts that Lucien had cataloged. To try and figure out what was going through my mind at the time. There was no second season on my Ipad so I have no idea if anything happened after L died. I find I am completely in the dark about that but, are we even still following the anime anyway? So would that even matter? It seems that Lucien had even felt it necessary to log the destruction and mass deaths of an orphanage called Whammy's. In his notes it said that it was full of his successors so wouldn't that mean it wasn't an accident after all? In Lucien's view, there was no way for anyone to know about Whammy's because he and Watari never use their real names. In fact. I am the first person he has ever told.
Which made me wonder even more. If there was a second season to Death Note, with L dead in the anime wouldn't that mean that someone would have to succeed him in order to keep the investigation open? So wouldn't the destruction of the very orphanage that housed his successors put a stop to that? When I think about it that way it would only make me assume that the fire which killed everyone in the orphanage was my planning. Either I did it or... I somehow got the second Kira who can kill with only a face to go there herself and do the dirty work. I found my eyes widening before suddenly standing.
Thinking of things that way! Then… Knowing Lucien's eyes were on me I tap the keyboard to call Watari. It wasn't long before his screen popped up on the computer blocking everything else out. "Watari, Can you retrieve all the airport footage within Japan, around the time that Whammy's was attacked." I pretty well speed talked from how quickly my heart was hammering. Silence from Watari followed before he finally answered.
"I'll get right on it." He spoke almost as quickly as I had. Maybe he figured out why I wanted them. I finally suck in a breath once his screen vanished and I look to Lucien who was just staring at me. Paused with a piece of doughnut halfway in his mouth.
"I was thinking. If I was indeed the one planning everything I may have had pull with the second Kira as well. Since in your documents you noted that Misa Amane had an unusual obsession with me. If I could get her to do anything and if I knew about Whammies. Wouldn't I have sent her? The second Kira who can kill with only a face to Whammies to get rid of your successors?"
"If we check all of the footage we might find her or at least someone who fits her description. We know she is known to wear disguises so it may be difficult."
"Difficult, but not impossible." I give him a smile finally setting back down and stealing one of his chocolate doughnuts from his box. "We will figure everything out. If we can place Misa Amane at Whammies when it was burned down, we will have her with all the other evidence against her. That will only leave. Light Yagami." Giggling I lick at the frosting. "mmm... Yummy."
