He always knew that there was something about her that was different. It's what made him pay attention to her even after all those years of being told Muggle-borns weren't worth any attention at all, especially after she punched him. But hearing her scream on his parlor floor being tortured by his aunt tore at something inside him. And what was worse was that Draco couldn't stop watching. He wanted to close his eyes but his aunt would take that as weakness and then he would be punished. So he just stood there watching, her eyes were locked on his.
"Now tell ME!" Bellatrix yelled at the tired girl on the ground, practically spitting on her. "What else did you take from my vault?"
The response was quiet and hoarse. "I swear… we f-found the s-s-sword… it's a-a fake… ne-ne-never went into… your va-vault,"
"LIES!" His crazy aunt was just about to do another round of the cruciatus curse when Draco must have done something and caught her eye, making her change tactics. "Draco get over here and use your Alpha command on this Mudblood Beta bitch."
Draco couldn't disobey even though he was an Alpha and his aunt was a Beta because she was the Dark Lord's favorite and was given permission by Him to boss any of the Death Eaters around. No one dared to disobey or felt the Dark Lord's wrath.
Slowly as if to his own doom he approached the girl on the floor. He knelt above her head putting one hand on either side of her face making her look at him. "Hermione," Draco said in his deep baritone Alpha voice that made Beta's pay attention to him and his commands. Out of the corner of his eye he saw that his aunt and mother were paying more attention to him as well. There was something in Hermione's eyes as they stared back at him that he just couldn't identify. Slowly she lowered her eyes and turned her neck in a show of submission but even that felt off to him. Draco pushed that feeling aside and went on with his interrogation, "Look at me and tell the truth. Where did you get the sword?"
Hermione looked back at him and drew a breath. With that breath she seemed to also draw more strength to speak. "We found an old sword and made it look like the sword of Gryffindor. We thought that if people thought we had it it would make people believe in the Order more and rebel."
There was something about what she said that just sounded wrong, like it was a lie. But that would be impossible. No Beta can defy the command of an Alpha to tell the truth. Unless… but that would truly be impossible.
"Ask about my vault Alpha," Bellatrix added, a little dazed to the Alpha voice.
Draco's thoughts were scattered by her voice. He gathered himself and asked, "Have you ever been in the Lestrange vault? Did you take anything?"
Still looking into his eyes she stated firmly, "No." That answer was more truthful but there was still something about her posture that still didn't sit well with his Alpha instincts.
"She must be lying!" Bellatrix screeched.
"She can't be Bella. She was made to tell the truth under an Alpha's command," Draco's mother finally stepped in.
Bellatrix made a face that made her look more manic than normal. "I'm still going to teach this Mudblood bitch her place. Something she'll never forget if she lives." His aunt pulled out the cursed dagger she wears at her waist and pushed Draco out of her way, bodily leaning over Hermione to carve into her arm. The screaming started up again and it was worse than time he did close his eyes because every instinct told him to make it stop. Her anguish haunted him.
After the last 'D' in MUDBLOOD was carved there was a commotion from the fall and Draco looked up to see Harry Potter and his sidekick barge into the room. Quickly his aunt picked up Hermione and held a wand to her throat.
"Let her go!" Harry yelled in his own commanding Alpha voice. Draco had known that Potter was an Alpha but he didn't realize that he was such a powerful Alpha that it would almost make him want to obey. Almost.
But it did make Bellatrix obey and was frozen in place as she let Hermione go. Hermione was just about to reach the Chosen One when Draco seemed to snap out of it and yelled in his own Alpha voice, "No! Stop!"
Harry growled and grabbed Weasley's shoulder and stepped in front of Hermione. "MINE!" That command got the red-head moving again. And with the help of a slightly familiar elf the trio disapperated.
It wasn't until later when Draco realized that Hermione had never stopped at his command. That's when he knew what she was and why he was feeling off with her interrogation.
Hermione Granger was an Omega!
