Twenty four hours later and Yelena finally makes it home. The dogs are the only ones their to greet her as she walks through the door. It's the middle of the night, but she doesn't hesitate to make her way to Kate's room. But to her disappointment, the archer isn't home. It's evident that she hadn't been there all day, and from the pictures on Yelena's phone, she knows exactly why.
Another morning goes by, and in the evening Yelena is back in their kitchen donning her apron and making dinner. The sound of jingling keys sends Fanny and Lucky running to the door, and Yelena's not far behind. Kate plunges through the door as her companion playfully pokes at her body. Their laughter comes to a quick and sudden end when they notice Yelena standing in the entryway.
"Yelena, you're back!" Kate says.
"Yeah I am," she says, while scanning the unknown woman, "and who the hell is this?"
"Whoa! Yelena this is Kerry, Kerry, Yelena," Kate says, before dragging Yelena to the kitchen area.
"Oh she must really like you, she actually remembers your name," Yelena says, while staring Kate up and down. Kerry walks pass them straight into the living room. "Oh yes, please feel free to go through my home," Yelena adds.
"Yelena stop," Kate demands, "I'm sorry, I didn't know you'd be home."
"Well, you knew I'd be home eventually did you not?" Yelena asks.
"It's been a week, and I hadn't heard from you," Kate replies, "so how the hell should I know when you'll be home.
Yelena takes a deep breath, "You're right, that's my fault. I'm sorry," she says.
"Can you please be nice? I really like her," Kate says,"Kerry, can you come over here." Kate glares at the assassin, "Kerry this is Yelena, my roommate, slash, best friend."
"It's so nice to finally meet you," Kerry says, "I'm sorry about that. It's hard to keep my hands off her," she says, as she throws her arms around the archer's shoulders.
"Yea, I see that. I know first hand that Kate does not mind," Yelena says.
"Really, and how would you know that?" Kerry asks.
"Because best friends!" Kate interjects, "we talk, share things, ya know like-
"Beds..." Yelena says, with a grin.
"Well okay! This was a great meet," Kate says, "Kerry do you mind waiting in my room. I just need to catch up with my roommate, I'll be there in a minute."
"Sure," Kerry says. She beckons for the two dogs to join her. Lucky follows but Fanny remains at a standstill between the three women. The pup looks on as Lucky abandons her to the scrutinizing glare of Yelena. Fanny stays put but sprawls out on the floor, garnering sympathy from Kate.
"It's okay girl, your mommy is just cranky," Kate tells the pup.
Yelena moves back toward the hot stove without saying a word, turning her back to the archer. Kate tosses her coat on a chair, then follows her roommate into the kitchen. She slips in the tight space between Yelena and the fridge and grabs a drink. "So... what was that about?" she asks; talking to the back of her friend's head.
"I don't know what you mean," Yelena says, while tending to the food.
"Can you at least turn around? You've hardly made eye contact since I've been here." Kate says.
Yelena aggressively turns off the burners, tosses her spoon on the counter, then whips around. Her already tight lips practically disappear once she lays eyes on her dapper roommate. Kate is decked out in a formfitting double breasted black suit, and it's paired with a red tie and white collarless button shirt. The blonde gets flustered at the sight of her friend's attire, and she quickly tries to redirect her view. She stumbles backward but manages to steady herself on the edge of the counter.
"Are you okay?" Kate asks.
The blonde looks straight at her, "I'm fine," she says, "I'm just tired."
"So that's why you're being so difficult," Kate says. "Have you gotten any sleep?" she asks. The archer takes Yelena by the chin and pulls her face forward to get a glimpse. "You know how you get when you don't get any sleep," she tells her.
Yelena grabs Kate's wrist and removes the brunette's hand from her face. She holds onto her for a moment while the archer gazes into her eyes. "Did you have to pick a girlfriend with the same first initial as yours?" she asks, "Really... it's so American. I bet her friends have already got you some monogram towels."
"You're such an ass," Kate sighs, "you come home after being gone for a week and you don't even say hello or ask how I am. Did you even miss me a little?" she asks.
Yelena grabs her by the lapel and looks her in the eyes, "I did miss you" - she kisses Kate on the cheek- "a lot more than I expected," she whispers.
"You wanna elaborate?" Kate asks, allowing the assassin to draw her in.
"Nothing, it doesn't matter," Yelena says, while clutching to the archer's tie. "You look really good by the way, very nice."
Kate takes a step back, "You mean this ol' thing," she says, with a a smile. She intuitively steps back into Yelena's personal space. There's a pensive look on her face as she examines her friend's guarded posture. "There's something different about you," Kate says, as she scans her tiny companion.
Unaware that her eyes betray her every time she speaks, Yelena says, "I told you, I'm just tired. It was a long flight."
Kate tries to make eye contact but Yelena intentionally avoids her gaze. " It's like..." Kate says - swerving her head to meet the blonde's gaze - "if I just..." The brash brunette propels her lips onto the dodgy assassin, and their mouths begin to jostle wildly against each other. The archer pauses to assesses Yelena's demeanor, and after finding her to be just as invested, she continues with their intense lip lock.
"Kate, stop," Yelena moans. She tries to push her away but the exuberant archer dives back onto her lips. "No, Kate, we have to stop. Your girlfriend is coming," she says, before turning away from her frustrated partner.
Kate still has her pinned to the counter. She caresses her mouth against Yelena's warm ear, "She's not my girlfriend," she whispers.
Kerry walks in, "Hey my little fire bunny, can we order some food?" she asks.
"No... don't ever do that," Yelena tells Kerry, "We don't do cutesy names in this house."
"Kate likes that name, don't you?"
Kate chuckles, "I... uh yeah, we can order food," she says, "there are some menus on the table."
"But I already cooked for us," Yelena says.
"I can eat both," Kate says. Immediately her chin drops into her chest and she shakes her head.
Kerry glances over the counter to get a look at Yelena's meal, and gets a view of her apron, "'I cook as good as I look,'" huh?
Yelena gestures at herself, "Don't you agree?" she asks, "obviously Kate does because she's the one who got me the apron."
Kerry is just about to respond when Yelena's phone starts to go off. Kate takes the opportunity to grab her by the waist and drags her to the couch. Yelena stares at the two as they crash onto the sofa. She reads her text, but quickly dims her phone when she sees Kate coming toward her.
"You have to go, don't you?" Kate asks.
"It's not work it's something else, but I do have to go," Yelena answers.
"Tell me that meant something," Kate says.
"Kate, I can't talk about this right now."
"Fine," Kate whispers. Kerry approaches her from behind.
"You two can have dinner and I will grab something while I'm out," Yelena says.
"Great idea," Kerry says.
Kate pulls her date away again, "Yeah, don't poke the bear," she says. "Go start the movie and I'll bring you a plate." Kerry puts her arm around the archer's stomach and kisses her on the neck before heading to the couch. Kate grabs Yelena's coat from the rack, and holds it open for her.
"Your date looks mad," Yelena says, as she slides into her coat.
"Could it be because you're grinning at her?" Kate asks, -Yelena shrugs - "Look at me Ms. Belova, we need to talk when you get back."
"Okay, as soon as I get back, I promise," Yelena says.
