Yelena awakes wrapped in linens and surrounded in Kate's scent. There's a huge smile on her face as she stretches across the mattress. She turns around to find that she's alone in bed and her smile quickly dissipates. Then the sound of rattling pans grabs her attention and she relaxes back into the mattress. Suddenly her nostrils begin to flare, then her eyes shoot open and she jumps out of bed.
Kate is in the kitchen cooking when Yelena comes rushing in with a sense of urgency. The blonde throws her body between Kate and the oven, and begins adjusting the knobs on the stove. She grabs Kate by the arms and moves her away from the burning food. The archer grins as Yelena frantically removes the pots from the burners.
"I told you never to cook without me," Yelena says.
"I was trying to do something nice for you," Kate replies.
Yelena sighs and wraps her arms around Kate's waist, "Then don't burn my pans my love," she says. She kisses Kate on the face then takes control of the situation.
The television is playing in the living room when a special report blares across the apartment. It's breaking news about an assassination attempt in Moldova, and it captures their attention. Kate turns up the volume then watches in disgust as they go over the violent details. Multiple casualties and an explosion that ends with a bullet in the stomach of a noted whistleblower.
A picture of the victim appears on screen, and Yelena immediately recognizes him as her last target. She snatches the remote from Kate's hand then shuts the program off. Her reaction is brash, and though she tries to conceal her culpability, it's evident in her demeanor.
"Yelena..." - the assassin looks up from her task - "you said you'd never lie to me," Kate says, with a serious tone.
Yelena stares into her eyes, "And I won't," she replies.
"Did you do this?" Kate asks.
"Yes," the assassin answers, straight-forwardly.
"Damn it, Yelena," Kate sighs, "How could you?"
"It's what I'm paid to do. You know this," Yelena responds.
"You say it like you don't even care. The man has people who love him and admire his sacrifice, including me!" Kate shouts.
Yelena reaches out to calm her, but Kate pulls away, "I'm a fool, I shouldn't have -
"You shouldn't have what?" Yelena asks.
"I should have known that I couldn't do this... this thing with us," she answers.
The assassin pulls her close, "You don't mean that," she says. She cups the archer by the face, and presses her lips all over Kate's mouth.
Kate backs away, "I can't do this," she tells Yelena.
"I have never deceived to you Kate. I have always been this," Yelena argues, "and I can't keep apologizing for it."
"Don't you want to be more?" Kate asks.
"More... what more, a hero?" Yelena asks.
Kate nods, "Yes, why the hell not, what's so wrong with that?" she argues.
Yelena chuckles and rolls her eyes, "You have the wrong sister. I'm not Natasha," she says.
"I never asked you to be," Kate replies, " Yelena I love you, and I will be there to save you from any threat in this world. Hell, any threat in this universe, but I can't save you from yourself. That's a battle I'm just not willing to lose. I won't stick around for that."
"Well then... you have a decision to make, Kate."
Kate grabs the indifferent blonde by the face and kisses her softly on the lips. The dispirited archer pulls away, "I'm gonna go stay," - Yelena's callous manner shifts into an attentive posture - "with Grills. I need time to think," Kate says.
