A/N: Anything in cursive is Snape's thoughts or doings. Sometimes I will write "Svereus Snape's POV" and sometimes not.
Chapter 2:
The first day was always the best, and the worst. The day began with breakfast, where each of the different heads of houses handed out their students' timetables. This year Hermione would take every subject but Divination. She had quickly realised that it was nothing for her when they got to try out the different subjects. She was most excited for Ancient Runes, it would be challenging yes but also worth it.
Hermione sat with the rest of the trio at the Gryffindor table, it was a silent agreement that no matter what, they should sit there together each morning. Even if someone needed to study or read they did it at the table, as long as they were together.
This morning Harry was eating his porridge while talking to Ginny, it was so obvious that they both liked each other but neither of them realised. Ron was eating like he hadn't eaten in years, even though he had three generous meals a day at the Burrow. Hermione didn't do anything, she just sat there watching her toast. She did not notice the stare that was so intense it could burn her neck.
Silly little girl. She barely ate yesterday and now she isn't eating her breakfast, such a muggleborn thing to do.
"Hermione" Ron gulped. "Are you going to eat something?"
"Ehm no, I don't… I don't feel so well"
"Okay then, should we go? We all have Care for Magical creatures with Hagrid as the first period."
Hagrid had taken over the subject this year when Professor Kettleburn had retired. Kettleburn had been, let's say, an enthusiastic and occasionally reckless man. His great love of the often a bit too dangerous creatures he studied and looked after led to serious injuries to himself and, occasionally, others.
Hermione understood quickly that Hagrid took after him, he was prone to underestimating the risks involved in caring for creatures. In their first lesson they met Buckbeak the hippogriff. Everything had gone smoothly, besides Nevilles incident with the textbook of course, until Draco came along. Harry had bowed and got to fly Buckbeak so Draco, as the senseless person he was, just walked straight up to the hippogriff and served a hit to the arm. Lesson dismissed.
"Blimey, he really is as stuid as he looks then!"
"Yes obviously Ron!" Hermione took a deep breath "and now he's going to owl his father and get Hagrid sacked"
"But he can't! Hagrid didn't do anything wrong?!" Harry looked furious, like a fire had started within his eyes. Hermione catched sight of this and decided to change the subject before they start arguing.
Ron and Harry had Divination whilst Hermione had Arithmancy before lunch. The lesson went by smoothly, and precisely what had happened at their test lesson in Divination - Harry had gotten the grim, a death omen, in his tea cup. Something was clearly bothering the wizard about this, but Hermione knew that Professor Trewlany was just a fraud. Undoubtedly it meant nothing, but Harry kept worrying no matter what.
"Bloody hell, we got double potions after lunch. Maybe Snape is going to kill you Harry"
"Ha ha Ron, you're hilarious" Harry rolled his eyes and got seated at the table. The boys started talking about quidditch with Fred and George instead. Fred's left eye was black and swollen, which Hermione could only guess was from their little joke business they had in secret. Though the witch didn't want to admit it she found their things rather amusing, especially when used against Ron. But her head went to other thoughts as fast as the food appeared.
"Guys I- I have to run to the library, gotten.. Much… homework… I- I have to go"
The witch sprinted to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. Why was she acting like this? When did this happen? But she didn't really care. All she needed was a release.
"Accio blade" she whispered.
Ron and Harry sat stunned at their table
"What in the world was that?"
"Mmf girl stuff i guess" Ron said no more and continued eating.
"Well I- okay sounds true"
Severus Snape's POV:
He was deep in conversation with Minerva when it happened, he saw the girl sprint out of the great hall just as fast as she had gone in.
"Minerva.. What is up with Miss Granger?"
"What do you Severus?"
"Something feels… off about her"
"Oh surely she's fine, it probably just nerves"
He scoffed, he didn't think it was just nerves. But he wasn't her head of house so he did not care. He should not care…
Her arms were once again bleeding and her eyes were blankly staring at the stall before her. This needed to stop, it couldn't keep happening. She needed to put herself together, if she didn't people would realise. She did not need another reason for taunts from the slytherins. She collected herself and wiped away the blood, she needed to get to class.
"Miss Granger, so you finally decided that it was worth to show up"
She looked at the clock, she was twenty minutes late. Fear crippled inside her.
"I'm sorry professor, it won't happen again" her eyes had taken to stare at the damage on the floor Neville once made.
"Stay after class"
"Yes, sir"
The boys sent her questioning looks but when she didn't say anything they gave up and continued listening to Snape. Today they would be making Calming Draught, a potion that was used to calm a person down after they had suffered a shock, trauma, or emotional outburst.
"Adding too much Peppermint oil could give the drinker a burning sensation in their mouth and cause watery eyes or uncontrollable sobbing. We will test it on our little know-it-all in the class later on. Begin"
Hermione's thoughts were everywhere but on potions. So little did she notice that her sleeve had tugged up a bit.
The girl looked pale. Like she could fall apart at any moment, so he stepped a bit closer just in case. Severus' heart skipped a bit when he saw the scars, he knew the pain behind those. But he also saw that there still was a bit of blood running from one. He silently murmed an incantation to stop the bleeding. He kept his stern look and tried to not care, it was not his problem. But could he just stand by and watch her do this to herself? No. He had to talk to someone.
"Class dismissed"
"But sir, we have barely started"
"Mister Malfoy, are you complaining? 5 points from slytherin."
"But- what- I-"
"Class DISMISSED. Everyone but Granger leave"
