p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" emJust to be clear, this chapter may or may not be connected to the previous one. /em/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" "Wren." Pidge scowled, crossing her arms. "What are you doing here?"/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" "Oh, you know me," Wren answered breezily from a corner of the room. "Here to cause mischief and mayhem, sower of destruction."/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Pidge's frown deepened as her eyes scanned the room for unusual movement, something that would give away Wren's position. "Ha-ha, very funny. Now why don't you get whatever you're looking for and leave?"/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Wren smirked and leaned closer, tapping Pidge's nose and causing her to jump and snarl. "Not so fast, shortstuff. This time I'm leaving something for you."/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Out of the pocket of her jacket, Wren pulled out a strange looking round device. Placing it on Pidge's bed, she watched Pidge's eyes widen as the device appeared seemingly from thin air. Curiosity momentarily overshadowing her resentment of Wren's appearance, she picked up the disk, turning it in her hands. "What is it?" Pidge asked. "From what I know of alien technology, it seems to be Altean, but I haven't seen anything like this around the Castle."/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" A voice came from across the room, "You have all of the information you need available to you. My only responsibility is to get the disc into your hands. Until next time, Pidgey." Pidge's head snapped up. "Wait, what?! Don't you dare leave without giving me more information! Why did you need to give this to me? What is it? What does it do? Where did it come from?" Only silence answered her. "Aaargh!" Pidge screamed, hurtling the disc across her bedroom. Just before it hit the wall, it halted in mid-air and then floated to the floor. "Come on, Pidgey, you know better than that," the wall said in an irritating tone. "Stop making things difficult already." She groaned and flopped on her bed. "You're the worst." The wall gave a smug snicker before returning to silence./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Reluctantly, Pidge got up from the bed and approached the disc. Little as she wanted to, she knew she had to figure out what the device was and how to use it. Whenever Wren showed up, things tended to get dangerous fast soon afterward. When Wren took the time to speak to Pidge, that usually meant things were about to become very difficult for her. Like that time when Wren appeared out of nowhere to give her a hair clip, saying she'd want as much visibility as possible for the coming rescue mission. Several aliens from a diplomatic mission to a nearby tribe had gone missing, and the leader pled for their safe return in exchange for joining the Voltron Coalition./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Using Wren's clue, Pidge got all her radar equipment up to date and started searching the area surrounding the palace, only to be overcome by guerilla fighters. Turns out that not all the tribes were happy with the ruling elite, and many saw their proposition to join the Voltron Coalition as a plug for more power. Pidge was locked in a dingy cell deep underground. The cells were so primitive, they had dirt floors, metal bars coated with rust, and mechanical locks. She was able to use Wren's hair clip to pick the lock on her handcuffs and cell, but not before being beaten, interrogated, and used for ransom against Voltron. In exchange for Pidge's safe return, the rebel tribes wanted Voltron to fight for their side against the ruling elite. The ruling elites weren't about to cave, and she assumed they were keeping her capture a secret from Voltron. Harboring an injured leg and various other minor cuts and bruises, Pidge was able to fight her way up to the surface, where she'd had to run full pelt into a dense forest and spend the night shivering under a pile of leaves, trying to call her lion and jumping at small noises./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" The next day, the rest of the team found her and informed her that the diplomats were safe and sound in the ruling elites' massive bathhouse. It was a combination of a spa and a waterpark, and upon being elected to travel in the diplomatic mission, the diplomats were so thrilled to have the privilege to enter the bathhouse for the first time that they had never actually left for their mission. The rest of the team hadn't even know she was kidnapped, as the ruling elite told them she was taking advantage of bathhouse privileges instead of going on the mission./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Due to Lance's love of waterparks, the rest of the team had been dragged into the bathhouse to find her, and the location of the diplomats had been discovered. The team had enjoyed a relaxing evening and a full night's sleep before waking to realize that she still hadn't returned from the water park. Green had led them to Pidge, who looked like a nervous wreck./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Once this had been explained, Pidge, with her eye twitching, spoke in a quiet voice. "Let me get this straight. You didn't even notice I was gone. And you went to a waterpark/spa that was so big, the team of diplomats who we thought were kidnapped actually got lost in it and never even left. I MISSED ALL OF THAT?!"/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Lance got a starry look in his eyes. "Yeah, there was this one ride where you actually had to wear seatbelts and the raft shot up into the air, and then you landed and it turned into a submarine that coasted along the bottom of the tide pool before dropping you into a whirlpool that funneled into a rollercoaster."/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Pidge's eyes were saucers. "WE HAVE TO GO BACK!" "Sorry Pidge," said Shiro, "but as we were leaving the ruling elite were overthrown by this group of fierce looking rebels and they decimated the water park." "NOOOOOOO!"/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Thus ended another adventure where Wren gave Pidge "valuable information" that led to her getting into trouble. Was Wren actually trying to help her? Or was Wren causing these situations that put Pidge in danger? She was always so smugly vague, like she enjoyed watching Pidge's confusion. Worse than that, Wren still wouldn't explain to her exactly who she was. Was she an Altean? Pidge knew Alteans could camouflage themselves, but she'd never seen that extend to the objects they were holding. Wren could be a Galra agent, trying to win her trust by "helping" her only to turn her in later./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" But even as much as Pidge resented the terrible things that came after a visit from Wren, she had to acknowledge that the random stuff Wren gave her on occasion did help. And while Wren would take things, they were usually small and unimportant./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"That lead to another important question. How did she keep getting in and out? Pidge had tried installing Wren detectors discreetly, and while they were useful at identifying when anyone else came on board, Wren's entrances and exits were undetectable to her tech. She didn't understand. Was Wren from another dimension? That was possible if another dimension had made a comet ship. Maybe her detectors weren't picking up Wren because Wren was portaling directly into the ship. But how was she able to lock into their precise location when they moved so often, and how did her ship fit into Pidge's bedroom? It exasperated her to no end that she, the tech genius, couldn't provide objective proof that there was an intruder on the ship./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Pidge shook off the questions and looked closer at the device. It was definitely some kind of Altean device. She could ask Allura about how to operate it, but that might be problematic./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Pidge hadn't told any of the others about Wren's existence. The first time Wren had appeared, she'd saved Pidge's life, and in gratitude Pidge had promised not to reveal who had helped her. It seemed to mean a lot to Wren, and Pidge didn't want to bring up how close she'd come to dying with the team. She loved them, but sometimes certain people *emcough Shiro cough/em* could be a little overprotective./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" As time went on and Wren's interventions continued, Pide started to feel uncomfortable with keeping Wren's existence a secret. She'd never actually seen her as she was constantly camouflaged, which grew more unnerving over time. So when she started to consider sharing Wren's visits, she tried to gather proof that she existed. That was harder than expected, as Wren was invisible to scanners, and computers acted strangely around her. Recordings turned up blank and videos showed only static. Pidge grew more cautious towards Wren and wariness continued to build. Was Wren doing this on purpose? Why was her existence so hard to prove?/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Finally, she resolved to continue to keep Wren's existence a secret. As Wren never spoke around other members of the team, they might think Pidge was just cracking from pressure, and she had no way to prove otherwise. Asking Allura about this disc, when they hadn't visited a planet in weeks, might be hard to explain. But if Allura did find it unbelievable that she found the disc lying around the Castle, it might prove Wren's existence./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" Pidge walked into the main deck, hoping to find Allura. Lance was leaning forlornly on the railing of Allura's platform, chatting idly with her as they looked at the star map. As his eye met Pidge's, Lance leapt up. "Pidge! My buddy, my pal!" He strode toward her, full of excitement. "Remember when we were all taking a break from fighting Zarkon and Keith and I found the pool? It was on the ceiling, and we thought that was the end! No pool fights or relaxing lap swimming. But I think you could help! If you changed the gravity in that room, we could still swim in the pool!"/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" "Lance, please. I need to talk to Allura before I consider indulging in your pool fantasies."/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" He gave Pidge a sly grin and nudged her. "For it to really be one of my pool fantasies, we'd need a lot more girls and some real sunlight to highlight my natural glow." Lance gave her the puppy dog eyes. "Please, Pidge? This really means a lot to me. It'll make it feel like we're back home again." Pidge screwed up her face before caving in. "Fine. But before I work on the pool's gravity, I need to talk to Allura. It could be important for our security."/p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" "Yes!" Lance lifted Pidge by the waist and spun her in a circle before setting her down and dancing around the room. "You'll love it, just wait! I'm so excited, let me go tell the others! Allura, you'll come too, right?" Allura laughed softly. "I'd be delighted." "Woohoo!" Lance tore out of the room to round up the others./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" "Pidge, what came I do for you?" Pidge approached Allura, holding out the disc. "I found this . . . laying in a cupboard in one of the rooms of the Castle. What is it?" Allura glanced absently at the disc as she closed the star map. "Ahh, that is a sapalite. We used them when I was young. They store files so you can look at them on different computers." "Kind of like a flashdrive." Pidge commented. "What's a flashdrive?" "Never mind." Allura stepped off her platform and positioned herself next to Pidge, looking at the disc closer. "You know, we could sync the sagalite to the computers in here. Who knows what information Alteans may have stored on it! It could be a message from my father." Pidge took a step back, feeling guilty now. "Yeah . . . the thing is, we don't know for sure how it got here - what if it was planted by the Galra. It could have a virus on it – that could infect our whole system! The Castle could completely shut down. Let me try to evaluate it on my own, check for bugs, and if I don't find anything wrong, then we can look at it together." Allura frowned, her eyes dropping to the floor, before turning away. "Fine. Just let me know when you're done. If it was from my father, he may have a message for me." She added under her breath. "I miss him." Pidge, guilt curdling in her stomach, gave Allura a quick side hug before sprinting to her lab./p
p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; font-size: 12pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" When connected to the Altean table in the lab, a video opened with a view of Pidge's lab and her chair, sitting empty. Wren's smug voice echoed from the speakers of the viewing station. Pidge glowered as she realized Wren was most likely sitting in her chair – HER CHAIR - invisible. "Hi Pidgey, I figured you would be watching this alone, in your lab. As expected. However, this message is meant for the whole team. It will not unlock unless it is in the presence of all five paladins, and it will not play unless it is on an Altean viewing table. Have fun gathering the others! Wren out." Pidge ground her teeth together, fighting the urge to smash the disc into ten thousand pieces. She snatched it off the table and stomped out./p
