Chapter Two

Mirabel

"What?" Camilo asked. I ripped off the tarp hiding the door. Camilo's gasp echoed off the walls of the hallway, but I was too much in shock to care. I looked at the door. It wasn't much, just a plain wooden door, as if our casita hadn't decided what the person's talents would be. The name etched across the top was what changed everything. Shayla. Who on earth is Shayla?

"We've gotta tell somebody," I said, turning to Camilo.

"No!" He said, fear creeping into his voice.

"What do you mean 'No'?!" I asked, a little louder than I should have.

"I... I don't know," he admitted. He covered up the door again, "I just think that, maybe this is something that should be kept a secret... At least until we figure out who this person is."

"Alright," I said. We walked down the stairs in silence. I didn't know where my cousin was going, but I knew that I was going outside, behind the house. As I was getting near the back door, I noticed Camilo was thinking the same thing as I was.

Sitting where I was probably wasn't the smartest idea. Sure, it was beautiful, but it brought back all the memories from a few months ago. I closed my eyes, but it only made the flashbacks worse. I stood, and started to walk away. Then I saw a figure falling from the sky. Camilo noticed it too.

As the figure got closer, I noticed the figure was a human. How on earth had a person gotten that high up?

The person hit the ground, much to far away for the both of us to have catched them. We raced up to the person.

The girl had scratches al over her. Her pants were all ripped, but her shirt was intact. Her shoulder-length hair was as pink, with dark roots. That was new. I'd never seen hair like that before. Camilo picked the girl up. Or at least tried to.

"Mirabel! Help me or I'll drop her," His voice was strained. I did my best to balance the girl's weigh between us.

"Can't you turn into someone stronger?" I asked him.

He laughed.

"If it worked like that, I'd be Luisa all the time. But shapeshifting is just physical. I don't magically get someone's strength if I turn into them," He said.

"Good to know," I said, "We have to get this girl to my Mamá, she'll be able to fix her injuries."
