CONGRATULATIONS phyl7375! No, not normal conversation. I think I misspelled a word, and this came up! It was just too weird to not add it in, adding a bit of humor into the solemnity of the story. IDK, I like odd trivia facts. Did not know there was music related to it! Not that I'd like to listen to that, but it's interesting, in a gross sort of way. But yeah. Old English word, last name, rug brand, although knowing what I know now, I'm not quite sure I'd like that rug in my home :) Or maybe, having that name tailing me around my entire life would be worse.
NOTE: Writing about places a kid would frequent and the pizza place reminded me of when I was young, there would be pinball machines and sometimes (old style) videogames in restaurants sometimes. Now, all you see is video gaming (for 21 and over), which is sad. I remember that sometimes, after dinner, my parents would give me a few quarters to play a few games. Now, everyone's on their phones the whole way through dinner. There was something special about game rooms after dinner. The kids of today are really missing out!
?-?
"Ah," Sue sighed, settling into bed. The kids were finally asleep and the couple could have some alone time. "I'm glad this day's over."
"ME-TOO." Jack replied.
"Lucy and I found out why Myles is acting the way that he is."
"Oh?" He distractedly replied.
She nodded. "Because his Dad died over the weekend."
"That's too bad." He replied, still distracted.
Sue frowned at the response, studying her husband. Usually he would be a bit more emotional about such a thing. "Is everything alright?"
"Huh? Oh, just work stuff." He replied, slightly out of his distraction and slightly smiling at her, but still not comprehending what she said.
"Is it something you want to talk about?"
It was his turn to study her. After a few seconds, he spoke. "We got a new case today."
"That's what's bothering you?"
Jack nodded. "Not the case, per say, but who. It was a dead missing kid."
"Oh." She quietly replied, looking away. "You're going to find the person who killed him, right?" She asked when she looked back at him.
Jack determinedly nodded. "Oh yeah."
?-?
As determined as ever, Jack walked into the bullpen the next morning before anyone else. Well, almost. Bobby had walked in barely 5 minutes prior.
"Well, look at you! You look determined." His friend said as Jack sat down at his desk.
He nodded. "We have to catch that guy."
"It really hits home to you, huh? I mean, especially now."
"Yeah." He replied quietly. "But I'd be the same way, Mellody and Chris or not." He replied louder, busying himself with a few things on his desk.
"If you say so," Bobby suspiciously replied.
The two friends worked in silence until Myles walked in a few minutes later. Upon seeing him, Jack's mind went to what he didn't know he heard the night before. "Hey, uh, Myles." He said hesitantly, not sure how or if to bring up the subject. He received a grunt in reply. Figuring that was his answer to stay silent, he didn't say anything more.
"So," Bobby started, breaking the silence. "Where do we start?"
"Well, he was missing for a year. If he was in this area since he went missing, somebody had to have seen him. How about we go and see who did?" Jack suggested.
"Excellent idea." Myles replied, quickly getting up and nearly running out the door, bumping into Sarah on the way out.
"What's with him?" She asked, jabbing her thumb in Myles' direction.
Jack shook his head as he and Bobby lagged behind. "Don't ask."
?-?
Mya sighed as Josh drove them past the welcome sign of Maine. "I am not looking forward to this."
"Who would be?" He countered, stealing glances of his wife.
"Can you, can you imagine," she hesitated.
"If we were the Lykes?" He finished. She nodded in reply. "No. And we don't even have any kids to worry about. Yet." He added, slightly smiling as he thought about the future, his smile quickly disappearing when he thought about the present.
"It's, it's bad enough that they've been worrying about him for a year, but now we have to tell them their worry was for nothing! He's not coming home! Ever!" She exclaimed, her vision blurred from the tears forming in her eyes.
He gently put his hand on her knee. "We may not be able to change the past, but how about we make the present as bearable as it could be, huh?"
She silently nodded as they continued to drive on.
?-?
If I was a kid, where would I go?" Bobby hypothetically asked as the three agents perused around the neighborhood where Peter was found.
"You know, he might've been dumped here. He could have been held on the other side of town." Myles said.
"That very well be, but how about we see about this neighborhood first?" Jack asked.
"I suppose." He reluctantly replied.
"I think I'm going to check out that pizza place over there. They say they have a game room. That's a good place to find a kid, right?" Bobby asked.
"Great idea." Jack said, nodding and looking at the restaurant.
"Come with me?"
He shrugged in reply, waking behind his friend.
"Hey, what about me?" Myles complained.
Jack stopped and turned around. "There's a park over there. How about you ask around there?"
He reluctantly nodded, then the three continued on to their assigned tasks.
"So it seems like you know what's up with him?" Bobby asked, jerking his head back towards Myles.
He nodded. "Yeah, though admittedly I was too focused on this case to hear what Sue was saying entirely."
"Oh? Sue knows what's going on?"
"He said his Dad died."
"Is that all?"
"Is that all?!" He exclaimed, stopping in front of the restaurant to stare at his friend in disbelief.
Bobby shrugged. "He didn't have a great relationship with him. I know I won't be that hung up when my Dad kicks the bucket."
Jack glared at him. "We'll see about that." With that, they walked into the restaurant.
