Author's Note: My arm hurts. It feels like it got pounded by a stone hammer and then was sat on by dragon...
Okay, I'm exaggerating a little bit. But my arm does hurt, which makes reaching stuff pretty hard. =/ Oh well. I'm not letting some sore arm stop me from doing stuff. =D
Anyway, welcome back everyone to another edition to "Sticks and Stones!" =D Now, one of the most noticeable traits about Hiccup is how he uses his hands a lot when he talks. I can't help but smile every time he's talking and moving his hands around. Even when he was talking with the Berkians in the Great Hall about Grimmel during HTTYD: THW, he was using his hands. And then there was that "truly flattering impersonation" that Astrid did of him in HTTYD 2 (which was pretty accurate in my opinion XD). So, I came up with this little drabble. =) I hope you guys enjoy it! =D
Summary: Hiccup uses his hands when he talks a lot. Astrid jokes that he could probably carry an entire conversation just using his hand gestures, and Hiccup decides to take the challenge. Post HTTYD 2.
Hand Gestures
"You use your hands a lot when you talk, you know."
Hiccup stopped telling Astrid about his new invention idea and looked up at the blonde, who was smiling brightly. Her blue eyes sparkled with amusement, and she was snickering quietly.
The young chief dusted his hands against his apron and said, "I don't know whether I'm supposed to be offended by that or not."
Astrid laughed and walked over to him. "You shouldn't. It just makes you…you, but it makes it a little hard to focus when you're talking. It's just…amusing."
"Amusing, huh?" said Hiccup. He knew that he did use his hands when he talked. He used them so much that he hardly even noticed when he started to make wild gesticulations as he spoke. Hiccup wasn't made fun of for this often, but he did receive a few laughs or giggles from those who were watching him speak. After being crowned the new Chief of Berk, Hiccup had been attending multiple meetings which required him to talk a lot. He had tried to refrain from using his hands, but he just couldn't seem to stop himself, especially when he was making a point. Whether it was a wave, pressing his hand against his desk, or just simply making funny gestures, Hiccup used his hands a lot when he talked. It was part of him.
Astrid laughed again and she nodded. "Yeah. Here, I can do the perfect imitation of you," she stepped back and said in her mediocre Hiccup voice and said, "Hi, I'm Hiccup and I love dragons!" As she said this, she waved her hands around exaggeratingly, which made Hiccup snort.
"Really, Astrid? That's the best you can do?" he asked with a slight deadpan expression.
The blonde shrugged. "I'm just doing what you do."
Hiccup shook his head. "Well, I don't do that. You're making me look like I'm…like I'm losing it or something!"
Astrid raised an eyebrow and smirked. "You're doing it again."
Hiccup looked down and saw that his hands were facing palms up, directed toward Astrid. He dropped his arms to his side, which made Astrid snicker.
"You know," she said. "I bet you could probably carry an entire conversation just using your hands."
"Ha, ha," said Hiccup. "Very funny."
"No, seriously," said Astrid with a grin. "Just imagine. If you lost your voice, you could just use your hands! Then you wouldn't have to skip chief meetings or other important things that require you to speak."
The entire thing sounded somewhat silly, but Hiccup couldn't contain his laughter. "Do you know how ridiculous I would look? Just making hand gestures without saying anything. People would think I've gone crazy."
"Crazy or just trying to carry a conversation," said Astrid.
Hiccup smiled at her, and an impish look flashed in his green eyes. Carry an entire conversation by just using his hands?
Challenge accepted.
Hiccup pointed to Astrid. She looked at him attentively and blinked in bemusement when he began to make stirring motions with his hands.
"Hiccup, what are you trying to say?" asked Astrid. Hiccup shook his head and pointed to his hands, which Astrid knew translated to: "Guess by watching my hands."
Astrid crossed her arms and decided to accept the little challenge. "Okay, you can continue. Try me."
Hiccup grinned and continued to make stirring motions. Astrid watched and began to think. What could Hiccup be referring to? There were many things that needed to be stirred, but he could also be referring to turning something. Astrid decided to go with stirring and racked her brain to think of what Hiccup was hinting at. Then, it hit her.
"Are you…cooking something?" asked Astrid. Hiccup nodded and gave her a thumbs up, and then made drinking motions.
"Wait, I thought you were cooking…Oh! The stirring refers to making something in the kitchen. And you're...making a drink I'm guessing?"
Hiccup snapped his fingers. "Bingo."
"Now, what kind of drink needs to be stirred…" Well, there were several drinks that could be stirred. In fact, all of them could. Water, juice, pretty much all of them. But the way Hiccup was stirring made it look like he was mixing something thick. Something that was difficult to stir without a proper spoon or ladle. So, what was thick and drinkable? Astrid tapped her chin in thought and said the first drink that came to mind.
"Is it yaknog?" guessed Astrid. And to her delight, Hiccup nodded with a grin.
"Okay, so, what about yaknog do you want to talk about?" she asked. Hiccup repeated the same motions that he had done earlier and then tapped his temple. His head. His…
"Brain!" Astrid said. "You want me to come up with some kind of new yaknog recipe?"
"Yep!" said Hiccup at last. "You got it!"
Astrid grinned, but her face soon turned into one of question. "Wait, what's wrong with my original yaknog recipe?"
Hiccup scratched his head. "Well…it could use some…improvement."
Toothless snorted from the corner. "Major improvement."
Astrid crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes at Hiccup. "If it's that bad, why did you drink it when I first gave it to you?"
Hiccup blinked and brought up his hands. He knew that he wouldn't be able to get the words "You're yaknog tastes horrible," but he could tell her through his hand gestures.
Besides, she wouldn't hurt him if he did something that she found amusing…right?
Author's Note: I have a feeling that Astrid will still be offended even if Hiccup used his hands to tell her that her yaknog is...not great. X)
I hope you guys enjoyed this little drabble! =D
Until the next chapter!
