Summary: Hiccup discovers that he's poisoned, and he only has a few hours left to live. Alvin has the cure to his poison, but he won't give it to Hiccup unless he trains his dragons. Hiccup will have to make a decision...his own life, or the captured dragons? (ROB.)
A Mission Gone Wrong, Part Five
Pain roused him from the sweet, painless bliss of unconsciousness. Hiccup squeezed his eyes shut, trying to escape to the once pain-free realm of darkness, but he knew that he had to wake up. He wasn't on the island anymore, and he needed to find a way out of…wherever he was.
Hiccup groaned and opened his eyes. His vision swam for a few moments, and once the waves cleared, the young viking found that he was tied to the chair in the middle of a stone cell room. The place smelled pungently of rot and other things that Hiccup couldn't name. There were no windows, no light. Not even a sliver of it.
After his eyes adjusted, he spotted the one way exit that was unfortunately locked. A giant metal door stood in the way between him and freedom. Hiccup frowned. It was going to be a lot more difficult to escape since the door was locked. Alvin had really outdone himself when he set up Hiccup's cell.
The door is locked, I'm tied to a chair, and Toothless is nowhere in sight, Hiccup summed up in his thoughts. Well, I might as well just focus on one problem at a time.
Deciding that it would be best if his arms were free, Hiccup began to work on the ropes that bound his wrists together. As he twisted and jerked, he immediately regretted doing so when his wrists pierced with pain. The ropes were cutting into his flesh, and he knew that if he struggled even more, the more damaged they would become. Hiccup stopped struggling and he hung his head weakly, wondering how he was going to get out of his precarious predicament.
Creeeak.
Hiccup lifted his head to see that the door was opening. He doubted that it was his friends or Toothless; his dragon was probably being held somewhere else and his friends must have headed back to the island to save him only to find that he was gone. His prediction was corrected, and Alvin stepped inside, holding a sword as sharp as dragon talons in his large hand. Hiccup hardened his gaze and scowled at the chief of the Outcasts despite the hopelessness he was feeling on the inside.
Alvin walked up to Hiccup, and his steps echoed throughout the cell. Soon, he was standing right in front of Hiccup, keeping the sword threateningly in view, which silently warned Hiccup that if he made a move to escape—even though he practically couldn't—or said something wrong, that sword blade would be the last thing he would see.
"Here's the deal, 'Iccup," said Alvin. "Train my dragons, and I'll let you and your dragon go."
"I'm not training your dragons, Alvin," Hiccup responded sharply.
In one swift movement, the sword was placed under Hiccup's chin. The young viking didn't even flinch. He was expecting it. The Outcasts were becoming predictable in their tactics.
"Train my dragons or I'll slice you to pieces, boy," Alvin spat.
Hiccup kept a steely expression. "I won't."
That made Alvin even more enraged. He was about to take a swipe when he remembered the poison that was coursing through Hiccup's veins. He still had a chance to get the stubborn teen to train his dragons. He just had to be patient. Why, the boy didn't even know what was wrong with him yet. He probably would give in and train the dragons he wanted once he realized that he was slowly dying.
Alvin smiled evilly to himself and put the sword in his sheath. He crossed his arms and said calmly, "You've been poisoned, Hiccup. And you only have a couple more hours until you die."
Hiccup stiffened. A couple more hours until he…The young viking shook his head. He wouldn't. He would find the cure. His friends were probably on their way to save him. They would get him out of there and they could go and find the cure together, but a part of Hiccup knew that getting the remedy wouldn't be that easy.
"Although, I do have a proposition," Alvin said.
"And what might that be?" asked Hiccup.
"I'll give you the cure, for I'm the only one who has it," replied Alvin. "But you have to train my dragons. If you do not, you'll be dead by sunrise."
Hiccup shivered. That was a rather difficult decision. To save his own life or the dragons? Of course, the young viking refused to train the Outcast chief's dragons. He wouldn't train innocent creatures to be used by a cruel tribe who wanted to use them for war and destruction. No, he wasn't going to train Alvin's dragons no matter what he did to him.
But…
I need to get my hands on that cure, thought Hiccup. But he wasn't going to train any dragon for Alvin to get a hold of it. Since Hiccup's friends were most likely on their way to come to his aid, he decided that he would stall Alvin until then. He just hoped that the other Dragon Riders would be able to make it to him in good time before something went wrong.
I'm sure Astrid has things under control…The Hofferson was second-in-command of the Dragon Training Academy; Hiccup knew he could trust her to lead the others.
"Bring me my dragon first, and then I'll make up my mind," said Hiccup after a few moments of silence. After some thought, Alvin agreed, knowing that the young viking didn't have very long to live anyway. He left the room, slamming the door shut behind him, leaving Hiccup once again in nothing but darkness.
Hiccup felt a sharp, stabbing pain that didn't only emit from his leg but throughout his entire body. He whimpered as an unbearable wave of pain washed over him, and his breathing quickened. He was running out of time.
Please hurry, guys…thought Hiccup. Please.
…
Astrid couldn't believe what she had just heard. She slammed the butt of her axe against the Outcast soldier's head and he crumpled to the ground, unconscious. The Hofferson girl didn't even bother to retie the ropes; her mind was focused on Hiccup. Her best friend whom she had just learned was dying.
No, no, thought Astrid. He's not going to die. He's going to be fine. We're going to save him.
"Get Fishlegs and Snotlout," ordered Astrid to the twins. Ruffnut and Tuffnut nodded and they mounted Barf and Belch and took to the sky to find Snotlout and Fishlegs. They had managed to get rid of the last of the Outcasts, which Astrid was glad for since she and the others didn't have to worry about any unwanted attention during their serious conversation.
The Dragon Riders met on the pale lit beach and Astrid told the new information that she had received from the Outcast Soldier. Fishlegs and Snotlout gasped once she finished her retelling.
"We need to go and rescue Hiccup," Snotlout stated pressingly.
Astrid nodded. "We will, but we need a plan first. We can't fly recklessly into Outcast territory knowing that they have Hiccup. The island is probably immensely guarded, meaning that it's going to be tricky flying in…"
Astrid tapped her chin and thought for a while. The other Dragon Riders stayed silent, which she was grateful for. The Hofferson girl thought and thought. What could they do to save Hiccup? What tactics did she and the other Dragon Riders need to use to manage to successfully save Hiccup without him getting hurt? And the cure to the poison…Alvin must have it, Astrid deemed. The Outcast chief wouldn't trust something so vital to his plan to his soldiers.
After a few more moments of silent thinking, Astrid came up with a plan. A crazy, possibly insane plan to save Hiccup, but she was willing to do whatever it took to save her friend.
"Mount up everyone," said Astrid as she leaped onto Stormfly. "I'll tell you guys the plan on the way there."
The Dragon Riders mounted their dragons and shot into the sky, heading toward Outcast Island, hoping that it wasn't too late to save Hiccup.
…
Alvin shoved Toothless into Hiccup's cell room, and the young viking immediately brightened at the sight of his best friend. Toothless warbled happily and began to approach Hiccup, but he was blocked by Alvin's sword. Toothless stepped back just in time to avoid getting his nose grazed by Alvin's sharp metal weapon. The Night Fury growled at the leader of the Outcasts, but he didn't launch an attack.
"Well? I brought you your dragon," said Alvin. "Now, you need to answer me. Will you train my dragons or not?"
Toothless turned to Hiccup, a look of concern glittered in his acid green eyes. Hiccup was as white as a cloud and his green eyes were duller than stones. He was losing strength; the poison was eating away at him, and Hiccup knew that it wouldn't be long until Alvin decided to finish him off himself. Hiccup returned Toothless' gaze, shrewdly sending him a look that told him to do something, and the Night Fury nodded imperceptibly, and he snuck behind Alvin while Hiccup distracted him.
"The decision of training your dragons or not was a hard decision to make," began Hiccup. Alvin stood there, listening. "And it took a while, but I think I finally came to a conclusion."
"What is it?" demanded Alvin forcefully. At that moment, Toothless whacked his tail against Alvin's head, knocking him out cold. The Night Fury bounded up to Hiccup and clawed the ropes, cutting them away. The bindings dropped uselessly to the ground, and Hiccup stood up from his chair, flexing his bruised wrists.
"I chose the third option: escaping this island," the young viking told the unconscious Outcast. Hiccup mounted his dragon and the two ran out of the cell room, swiftly making their way through the long corridors and weaving tunnels of the Outcast dungeons. Toothless seemed to know the way. Hiccup guessed that he probably was put in a cage near the exit. Hiccup and Toothless soon abandoned the dungeons behind them and found themselves outside. Hiccup spotted a few black dots in the distance, and he first thought that he was going to go unconscious again until he inspected the dots a little further. Those dots weren't blurring his vision, they were his friends! They had come to save him!
Hiccup smiled. He patted Toothless and said, "Come on, Bud. Let's get out of here before something—"
Before Hiccup and Toothless could take off, before Hiccup could even finish his sentence, he felt himself being violently knocked off his dragon. His vision flickered for a few moments, and he found Alvin standing over him.
"You really thought you escaped?" he said with a diabolical chuckle. He grabbed Hiccup by the shirt collar and the young viking struggled under his hold. "You forgot all about the cure too. I'm the only one who has it. If you leave, you'll never get it."
Hiccup managed to look up into the sky to see his friends approaching. He could hear the Outcasts preparing for battle, loading their weapons and preparing to fire.
And even though he was stuck on the ground, Hiccup could fleetingly hear Astrid up in the air yelling out the command to fire.
Author's Note: The Dragon Riders swooped in just in time! *Cheers* Go and save Hiccup, ya'll!
