An Open Window

Wide.

Open.

Full of possibilities.

Those words perfectly described a window. Hiccup rested his head in his arms as he gazed out his own bedroom window. The sunrise was beautiful. Pink, purple, and orange hues were streaked across the sky, and the round, comforting sight of the sun was just climbing its way up from the horizon. Hiccup smiled. He had always loved the morning sunrise on Berk. And now that he could actually fly into the air and get a closer look at it, he loved the sunrises even better.

It had been a few months since the battle with the Red Death, and Hiccup's life had become infinitely better. He could hardly believe that people actually talked to him. He had friends now, and he even managed to tame the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself. Hiccup never would have believed it if he were told that he would train a Night Fury some time in his life. The fact that he had actually done so still boggled his mind.

And since he had trained Toothless, he had learned so much about dragons. Things that proved to be useful in the intense battle with the Queen of the Dragon Nest. Hiccup had begun to get used to his new prosthetic leg. He still found it a little difficult to walk, but he was significantly a lot better than four months ago.

Toothless snored behind him, and Hiccup laughed to himself. The Night Fury was tired. The two of them had spent the previous day helping viking families with their dragons. They had flown and walked all over Berk, giving tips and solving problems that occurred that involved the dragons that now resided on Berk. Toothless had crashed the minute they returned home, so Hiccup wasn't surprised that his scaly friend was sleeping in.

Hiccup geared his eyes back toward the sunrise. He didn't mind not being able to fly out into the air to enjoy it from a closer view. He knew that Toothless needed to rest, so he would let him.

The young viking's thoughts wandered to how much had changed since the Red Death. He was no longer overlooked by his tribe. He was accepted by his peers. People made an effort to talk to him, and no one ever scowled or frowned his way when he was walking through the village. Villagers were friendly toward him, the other teens of Berk hung out with him, and his father was making an effort to spend more time with him. Hiccup had never been given a chance, but now, he found that people were actually trying to get to know and interact with him.

The young viking found that there were several opportunities for him too. Wide and open, just like a window. Not only did Hiccup help other viking families with their dragon problems, but he also helped his father at chief meetings when it came to dragon related things. Hiccup and the other teens of Berk had begun to teach their dragons new tricks. Aerial maneuvers, and acts that were just for show and entertainment. Hiccup would give the others help and critiques when they needed them. Hiccup also changed up the saddle plans that he had used to make Toothless' tailfin and saddle, and he crafted each of the other Dragon Riders a saddle of their own just for their dragons. Now that peace was made between the dragons and vikings, Hiccup found several new opportunities and chances for him to take. Several opportunities that he had never been given back when he was shunned by Berk. But now, Hiccup was given a chance. He was given an opportunity.

He was given an open window after so many years of having them shut in front of him.

Toothless yawned from behind him, and Hiccup turned around with a smile. The Night Fury stretched and shook his head, shaking out the remnants of sleep that still lingers.

"Hey, Bud," said Hiccup. "The sunrise is almost over, but if we head out now, we can still sneak in a short morning flight."

Toothless crooned a reply and soon, both he and Hiccup were soaring above the clouds. The sky was transitioning from its colorful blend of warm colors to a bold, beautiful blue. The sun glowed brightly, and Hiccup grinned.

Hiccup was given an open window. And just like a window, they were filled with possibilities.

And if there was one thing Hiccup knew, it was that those windows would never be closed ever again.
