Chapter 2: Fireworks

Washington, D.C.

July 5, 00:01 EDT

Blue Jay's POV

"Time runs short."A voice echoed in my head. "You must awaken. You must awaken now!"

A groaned escaped my throat as my eyes slowly opened to check my surroundings.

When I tried to move, I felt my hands being locked tight and saw I was trapped in some kind pod just like Robin, Kid Flash and Aqualad.

I looked down and saw Superboy staring at us.

"What do you want?!"Kid Flash shouted angrily. "Quit staring! Your creeping me out!"

"Uh, KF?"Robin said. "How 'bout we not tick off the guy who can fry us with a look?"

"Yeah, if you don't remember this guy here was-"I started.

"I know he kicked our butts, Jay."Kid Flash interrupted.

Aqualad looked at Superboy.

"We were trying to help you."Aqualad commented.

"Yeah!"Kid Flash agreed. "We free you, and you turn on us! What's that for–"

"Kid, please, be quiet now."Aqualad insisted. "I believe our new friend was not in full control of his actions."

I looked at Robin and notice a little tiny tool appearing on his glove causing me to suddenly remember the little hair clip I head underneath my hair.

But since my hands were cuffed, I couldn't reach it.

Good thing, I remember the little extra clip that was hidden underneath my left glove.

"What if…what if I wasn't?"Superboy asked suddenly.

"He can talk?!"Kid Flash asked in astonishment.

"Yes, he can."Superboy answered.

Aqualad, Robin and I looked at Kid Flash, who stared back at us.

"What?"Kid Flash asked with a shrug. "It's not like I said it."

"The genomorphs taught you telepathically?"I asked.

"They taught me much."Superboy replied. "I can read, write. I know the names of things."

"But have you seen them?"Robin questioned. "Have they ever actually let you see the sky or the sun?"

"Images are implanted in my mind, but, no, I have not seen them."Superboy responded.

"Do you know what you are?"Aqualad asked. "Who you are?"

"I am the Superboy."Superboy answered."A genomorph. A clone made from the DNA of the Superman. Created to replace him should he perish. To destroy him should he turn from the Light."

Me, Robin and Kid Flash looked at each other in pure shock as Aqualad continued speaking to Superboy.

"To be like Superman is a worthy aspiration."Aqualad responded. "But like Superman, you deserve a life of your own. Beyond that solar suit. Beyond your pod. Beyond Cadmus."

"I live because of Cadmus!"Superboy shouted. "It is my home!"

"Your home is a test tube."Robin commented. "We can show you the sun."

"Uh, pretty sure it's after midnight, but we can show you the moon."Kid Flash suggested.

"And the striking display known as fireworks too."I added. "They're loud, but colourful."

"Jay, I think the fireworks just ended."Robin responded.

I frowned. "Oh."

"But we can show you, introduce you to Superman."Aqualad declared.

"No, they can't."A voice said.

We watched as the doors opened up to reveal Guardian and a couple of scientists coming inside.

"They'll be…occupied."Dr Desmond sneered and turned to the female scientist. "Activate the cloning process."

"Pass!"Robin and I responded in unison. "Batcave's crowded enough!"

Desmond glared at Guardian.

"Get the weapon back in it's pod!"Desmond ordered.

"Hey!"Kid Flash protested. "How come he gets to call Supey an it?"

"Help us."Aqualad pleaded.

Guardian placed his hand on Superboy's shoulder and the boy brushed it off.

The genomorph on Dr Desmond's shoulder landed on Superboy's and a expressionless look appeared on his face.

Superboy left the room as Dr Desmond glanced at the female scientist as she activated some kind of machine.

I screamed out in agony as my body got hit by electric shocks and felt some of my blood being sucked out.

Suddenly I heard a loud crash and the pain I was feeling stopped.

I looked up a little and saw Superboy throwing the broken heavy door aside before he began walking forward.

But was he going to save us or let us be doomed by the mad scientist?

I got my answer when I saw Superboy shove away Guardian and the two scientists.

He was now on our side.

Superbly glared at Desmond.

"Don't give me orders."Superboy scowled.

"Uh, you here to help us or fry us?"Kid Flash asked warily.

Superboy glared at us, but then stopped.

"Huh, I suppose I don't have heat vision."Superboy said with a smile. "So I suppose helping's my only option."

I used the clip in my left hand to uncuff myself before escaping out of the pod.

I rubbed my wrists as Robin landed next to me.

"Ugh! Finally!"Robin exclaimed and looked at me. "We're lucky Batman isn't here. He'd have our heads for taking so long."

"Seriously?"Kid Flash questioned. "That's what you two are worried about? The whole League will have our heads after tonight!"

I went over to the computer and opened up Aqualad and Kid Flash's pods.

"Robin, take care of Kid."I ordered. "Superboy, take care of Aqualad."

Superboy glared at me.

"Don't you give me orders either."Superboy warned darkly.

Superboy jumped towards Aqualad and broke his locks free while Robin went to pick Kid Flash's.

Once Aqualad and Kid Flash were quickly released, the five of us ran out of the room.

"You! You'll never get out of here!"Desmond growled. "I'll have you back in pods before morning!"

I turned around and waited for Robin as Desmond glared at us.

"That guy is not whelmed, not whelmed at all!"Robin scoffed.

Robin threw explosives at the weird pods that kept our DNA.

"What is it with you and this whelmed thing?"Kid Flash asked.

Me, Robin and Kid Flash headed out with Superboy and Aqualad as an explosion was heard behind us.

"We are still 42 levels below ground!"Aqualad stated. "But if we can make the elevator..."

Suddenly a group of bigger genomorphs arrived and blocked our path to the elevator.

The five of us glanced at the orbs that were glowing red and smaller genomorphs hatched out.

We were trapped!

Me, Robin, Kid Flash and Aqualad immediately jumped over the big genomorphs while Superboy started fighting them.

"Superboy!"Aqualad yelled out. "The goal is escape! Not to bury ourselves here!"

"You wanna escape?!"Superboy shouted.

Superboy picked up a big genomorph that was unconscious and threw it to the other genomorphs.

Aqualad slammed open the doors of the elevator and I pulled out my grappling gun.

Robin and I swung ourselves up while Kid Flash climbed up.

Superboy grabbed Aqualad and started to fly, but then he started to fall.

Robin threw a batarang against the wall and Aqualad caught it just in time.

"Superman can fly, why can't I fly?"Superboy questioned.

"Don't know."Kid Flash responded. "But you can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Still cool."

Kid Flash helped Superboy go down as the clone thanked Aqualad for grabbing him.

Robin and I became alarmed when we heard the sound of an elevator heading our way.

"We have to get out of here now!"I warned.

"Guys, this will have to be our exit!"Robin stated.

Robin pointed at the door labelled 'SL-15' and Superboy kicked the door open.

We ran down the hall just as the elevator passed us.

But we still had the army of those creepy genomorphs still chasing us from behind.

"Left!"Superboy ordered.

I almost slipped by having to turn left, but Robin quickly grabbed my hand as we continued running.

"Right!"Superboy instructed.

The five of us ran to the right, only to meet a dead end that contained the ventilation system above.

"Great directions, Supey."Kid Flash said sarcastically. "You trying to get us re-podded?"

"No, I don't understand."Superboy responded with a troubled look.

"Don't apologise!"Robin remarked. "This is perfect!"

Superboy opened the entrance to the ventilation system as Robin smirked at me.

"Ladies, first."Robin gestured and held out his hands for me.

I rolled my eyes as I jumped on them, climbing into the ventilation system.

Then Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad and Superboy immediately followed shortly after me.

"At this rate, we'll never get out."Kid Flash complained as we crawled through the system.

"Shh."Superboy hushed. "Listen."

The five of us froze when heard the genomorphs closing in on us.

I took out my mini laptop and typed in a few things as a hologram map appeared on the little screen.

"What are you doing, BJ?"Kid Flash asked.

"Don't worry."I assured smugly. "I have deactivated the internal security cameras so that certain friends of ours won't find us."

We soon came out out of the ventilation system and saw that we were in a clear hallway.

It seemed that the genomorphs were no longer following us.

Robin bent down as he worked on his gauntlet to do one of his sneaky tricks.

"I hacked the motion sensors."Robin stated in amusement.

"Sweet."Kid Flash remarked and placed on his goggles. "Still plenty of them between us and out. But I've finally got room to move."

The four of us started running after Kid Flash as he rushed to the stairs and a few small genomorphs were chasing after us.

"More behind us!"Robin warned as he checked the map.

I heard a crash and stopped to see Superboy kick and pretty much break the staircase.

An impressive way to lose our pursuers.

By the time we got to sublevel one, an alarm was ringing throughout the area.

I saw Kid Flash on the ground and Aqualad standing over him.

"We're cut off from the street!"Aqualad announced.

"Really?"Kid Flash asked sarcastically and stood up. "My head hadn't noticed."

I opened the hologram on my mini laptop to hack into the security system, but it wasn't fast enough.

Even with Robin taking half of it.

Aqualad and Superboy tried to open the doors, but it didn't work.

Suddenly we saw the bigger genomorphs showing up as Robin called out for attention.

"This way!"Robin shouted and kicked a small door open.

The five of us rushed to the opened entrance, only to come face to face with the other genomorphs.

I took out my birdrangs as the boys stood ready to fight as well.

Then the red horns on the genomorphs started glowing causing all of us to feel light headed and drop onto the ground.

Not another black out.

"Jay."Robin's voice whispered.

I opened my eyes to see Robin's masked eyes looking down at me.

"I'm fine, Boy Wonder."I responded as he helped me up. "Though I feel like going to black out number two."

I notice the genomorphs weren't attacking us, which confused me.

Weren't they chasing after us a few minutes a go?

"Guardian."Aqualad spoke up.

"Go."Guardian ordered. "I'll deal with Desmond."

"I think not."A familiar voice growled.

A bunch of genomorphs backed away revealing the angry scientist behind Guardian.

"Project Blockbuster will give me the power to restore order to Cadmus."Desmond stated and held out a test tube that had a blue liquid inside.

We watched as Desmond drank the whole blue liquid and started grunting in pain.

Desmond fell to his knees before his clothes ripped as he became a big blue creepy looking creature.

"Everyone, get back!"Guardian ordered.

Guardian tried to tackle Desmond, but the monster easily shoved him aside.

Superboy started fighting against Desmond before he was tackled up into the ceiling.

"That's one way."Robin commented.

"Think Lab Coat planned that?"Kid Flash asked.

"I doubt his planning anything right now."I replied simply.

Aqualad nodded in agreement.

Me and Robin took out our grabbing hooks to follow after Superboy and Desmond.

I pulled up Kid Flash and Robin pulled up Aqualad.

The four of us arrived at the ground floor, where we saw Desmond and Superboy still fighting against each other.

But then Desmond threw Superboy towards us, sending him and Aqualad onto the floor.

Desmond let out a loud roar before charging toward us.

Superboy, Aqualad and Kid Flash charged towards Desmond, but none of them were no match for the rampaging monster.

My eyes widen when I saw the building shaking a bit because of the crashed pillars causing an idea to dawn on me.

"Robin, the pillars..."I started.

"Of course!"Robin responded in realisation and activated the map of the pillars. "KF, get over here!"

Kid Flash zoomed up to me and Robin.

"A map?"Kid Flash questioned. "What for?"

"For this."I sighed and pointed at the map. "Look."

Robin showed the plan in the map.

"Make Desmond destroy most of these pillars, got it?"Robin asked.

"Got it!"Kid Flash answered and zoomed back into the fight.

Robin looked at me.

"Jay, place the bombs on each pillar."Robin ordered. "I'll go tell Superboy and Aqualad."

"Understood, Robin!"I answered.

I took out the birdarangs that contained bombs in them and carefully attached them in each pillar.

Superboy and Aqualad rushed up to Robin as Kid Flash kept Desmond busy.

Robin drew a 'X' on the floor using a piece of chalk before Aqualad splashed some water and Kid Flask zoomed onto it as Desmond went after him.

Superboy punched Desmond on the face causing the monster to slip and land on the puddle of water.

Aqualad zapped electricity on the puddle causing Desmond to get zapped.

I notice my birdarang bombs flashing in sapphire blue colours causing me to quickly warn the boys.

"Guys!"I shouted. "Move out the way!"

The five of us ran to the exit as the bombs exploded in the area and the whole building crumbled down.

A couple seconds later, Superboy pushed up all of the rubble around as Robin stopped holding me in a protective hug.

Aqualad gasped. "We did it."

"Was there any doubt?"Robin chuckled a little.

I watched as Robin and Kid Flash exchange a high five, but then they clenched their sides in pain.

I giggled a little underneath my hand before noticing the bottom part of my shirt was a bit ripped while my hair looked sort of ruffled.

"Ugh, I look like a wild person."I scoffed.

Kid Flash smirked at me.

"At least you know how to bring the house down, babe."Kid Flash sneered smugly.

"Shut up."I muttered with a frown.

"Careful not to pick out Jay's feathers, KF."Robin joked. "She might peck you real bad."

"Shut up, Bird Boy!"I snapped as the blush on my face became bigger.

As we stood up, we notice Superboy looking at Desmond, who was no longer moving.

"Hey."Kid Flash said and pointed at the moon. "The moon."

The five of us stared at the full moon in the sky which was surrounded by countless twinkling stars.

As we looked at the moon, we saw Superman show up in the sky.

"Oh and Superman."Kid Flash added. "Do we keep our promises or what?"

However the rest of the Justice League then showed up behind Superman.

I gulped nervously when I notice Batman going next to Superman.

Oh boy.

Superboy walked away from us as he stared at Superman before showing the symbol on his ripped white shirt.

"Is that what I think it is?"Batman asked.

"He doesn't like being called an it."Kid Flash warned quietly.

"I'm Superman's clone!"Superboy announced.

Shocked expressions appeared on all the members of the Justice League's faces.

"Start talking."Batman ordered simply.

After a half an hour of explaining, Batman and the remaining members of the Justice League spoke to each other while Green Lantern, Hawkman, Hawkwoman and Captain Atom took Desmond away.

I stood near the boys as we watched Batman talking with the other heroes.

My eyes landed on Robin.

"What do you think his saying?"I asked.

Robin shrugged in respond as Superman suddenly approached Superboy.

"We'll figure something out."Superman admitted. "The League will, I mean.

For now, I'd better make sure they get that Blockbuster creature squared away."

Then Superman took off in the sky.

The five of us notice Batman walking forward with Flash and Aquaman.

"Cadmus will be investigated."Batman stated as he approached us with Flash and Aquaman in tow. "All 52 levels. But let's make one thing clear-"

"You should've called."Flash interrupted.

"End results aside, we are not happy."Batman stated. "You hacked Justice League systems...disobeyed direct orders and endangered lives."

"I'm sorry, but we will."Aqualad declared.

"Aqualad, stand down."Aquaman ordered.

"My apologies, my King, but no."Aqualad answered. "We did good work here tonight. The work you've trained us to do. Together. On our own, we forged something powerful. Important."

"If this is about your treatment at the Hall, the four of you–"Flash started.

"The five of us."Kid Flash corrected. "And it's not."

"Batman, we're ready to use what you taught us."Robin assured firmly.

"Or else why bother teaching us at all?"I questioned.

"Why let them tell us what to do?!"Superboy demanded. "It's simple. Get on board or get out of the way."

All of us looked at Flash, Batman and Aquaman in silence, waiting for a respond.

Mount Justice

July 8, 08:04 EDT

Batman talked to me, Robin, Flash, Aqualad and Superboy as all five of us stood in a row.

The five of us were wearing casual clothes, but Robin wore black glasses to protect his identity and I simply kept my domino mask despite not wearing my hero costume.

We were in a cave which was the original Secret Sanctuary of the Justice League, which was located in Happy Harbor in Rhode Island.

"We're calling it into service again."Batman declared. "Since you five are determined to stay together and fight the good fight...you'll do it on League terms. Red Tornado volunteered to live here and be your supervisor. Black Canary's in charge of training. I will deploy you on missions."

"Real missions?"Robin asked.

"Yes, but covert."Batman replied.

"The League will still handle the obvious stuff."Flash admitted. "There's a reason we have these targets on our chests.

"But Cadmus proves the bad guys are getting smarter."Aquaman stated. "Batman needs a team that can operate on the sly."

"The six of you will be that team."Batman declared.

"Sweet!"I grinned.

"Cool!"Robin chuckled.

Robin and I high fived each other before I realised something.

"Hang on, six?"I asked in confusion.

Batman looked behind us and the five of us turned around.

Martian Manhunter appeared along with a younger figure, who looked like a female version of him.

"This is the Martian Manhunter's niece, Miss Martian."Batman introduced.

"Hi."Miss Martian greeted.

"Liking this gig more every minute."Kid Flash grinned excitedly.

I rolled my eyes as I simply placed my hands inside the pockets of my pale blue hoodie.

"Welcome aboard! I'm Kid Flash!"Kid Flash greeted as he approached Miss Martian before he introduced the rest of us to her. "That's Robin. The girlie next to him is Blue Jay. That's Aqualad. It's cool if you forget their names."

"I'm honored to be included."Miss Martian replied kindly.

I glared at Kid Flash and whacked him over the head for calling me 'Girlie' before giving a warm smile to Miss Martian.

"Ignore Kid Flash."I instructed. "His an idiot."

Robin laughed lightly as he and Aqualad went next to me before calling out to Superboy.

"Hey, Superboy!"Robin called out. "Come meet Miss M."

Superboy approached us and Miss Martian changed her clothes to make them look similar to Superboy's.

"I like your T-shirt."Miss Martian remarked.

Superboy smiled at Miss Martian as I smirked in amusement.

Somebody already had a crush.

"Hey BJ, why did you have to hit my head so hard?"Kid Flash asked as he rubbed his head.

"To warn you not to call me 'girlie' again."I answered simply.

"Today is the day."Aqualad stated with a smile.

The six of us smiled as Robin placed his arm around my shoulder.

I couldn't wait to go to more missions with our new friends.
