Chapter 3: Welcome to Happy Harbor

Blue Jay's POV
Me and the team (minus Superboy and Miss Martian) were fighting Brick and his goons.
Brick opens fire at Speedy, who dodges the shots and disarms the crime lord.
I used my whip to grab a goon and threw him against a crate before kicking the other two down.
Speedy was helping out too, but I knew anyway he was still angry with Green Arrow for treating him like a sidekick and not trusting him.
"For covert missions."Robin said and dropped down behind Speedy. "You know, spy stuff."
Kid Flash runs to the top of the crates to tell Speedy about our new friends.
"And wait till you see Superboy and Miss Martian."Kid Flash added excitedly. "But I saw her first."
I rolled my eyes before noticing Brick letting out a war cry and throwing another piece of concrete towards us.
Me, Speedy, Robin, and Kid Flash all dive out of the way, but Aqualad remained where he was.
Aqualad takes out the concrete with twin maces as Speedy uses two arrows that stick to Brick's chest and release three spurts of flame to knock him back.
"Tell Arrow he shouldn't send boys to do a man's job."Brick mocked. "Go ahead."
Speedy grinds his teeth as he shoots another arrow at the villain.
When the arrow hits Brick, a foam releases from the capsule stuck to the goon and traps him in it.
Kid Flash skids to a stop crouched under Speedy's aim.
"High-density polyurethane foam."Kid Flash chuckled. "Nice."
Speedy turns and started walking toward the path that Robin, me and Aqualad stood which will lead him right out of the docks, if you know the way.
"So, Speedy, you in?"Robin asked.
"Pass."Speedy answered. "I'm done letting Arrow and the League tell me what to do. I don't need a babysitter or a clubhouse to hang out with the other kids. Your Junior Justice League is a joke. Something to keep you busy and in your place."
"Don't be like that Speedy, please."I begged with a sad look. "Just give it a try."
"I don't want any part of it."Speedy scowled sourly.
The four of us watched as our oldest friend walk out of sight before we looked at each other with shocked expressions.
Mount Justice

"Recognize: Robin; B-0-1, Kid Flash; B-0-3"
Robin and Kid Flash ran forward while me, Miss Martian, Aqualad and Superboy stood before a holoscreen.
"Did you ask him?"Robin asked.
"What did he say?"Kid Flash added.
"He is arriving now."Aqualad replied.
Kid Flash looked at Robin.
"Then what are we waiting for?"Kid Flash questioned.
We arrive at one of the entrances which is a ramp that falls down into the cave from the ground above them.
The six of us walked up to the ramp as Red Tornado lands before us.
"Red Tornado!"Kid Flash called out with a wave.
Red Tornado landed in front of us.
"Greeting."Red Tornado answered. "Is there a reason you intercept me outside the cave?"
"We hoped you had a mission for us."Aqualad conveys to the hero.
"Mission assignments are the Batman's responsibility."Red Tornado stated simply.
"But it's been over a week and nothing-"Robin tried, but was cut off.
"You'll be tested soon enough."Red Tornado responded firmly. "For the time being, simply enjoy each other's company."
"This team is not a social club."I scoffed with my arms folded.
"No."Red Tornado agreed. "But I am told social interaction is an important team-building exercise. Perhaps you can keep yourself busy by familiarising yourself with the Cave."
Red Tornado walked past the six of us and headed inside the cave.
"Keep busy?"Kid Flash mocked.
"Does he think we're falling for this?"Robin retorted.
"Recognised: Red Tornado; 1-6."the computer said.
"Ooh, I'll find out."Miss Martian responded and turned around to look at Red Tornado with a concentrated look, but then closed her eyes in disappointment. "I'm sorry, I forgot. He's a machine. Inorganic. I can't read his mind."
"Nice try though, so…"Kid Flash started and looked up at Miss Martian. "You know what I'm thinking right now."
"We all know what you're thinking now."Robin scowled and jutted his elbow into Kid Flash's lower back.
"And now we tour the clubhouse."Aqualad responded.
"Well, Superboy and I live here."Miss Martian said. "We can play tour guides."
I gave Superboy a glance.
"Don't look at me."Superboy replied.
"We won't."Kid Flash assured quickly and looked at Miss Martian. "A private tour sounds much more fun."
"She never said it was private."Robin reminded.
"So what do we do now?"I questioned.
"Team building."Aqualad spoke up. "We'll all go."
We all followed Miss Martian back into the cave, where she introduced us to every room there was in here.
The last area in the cave, she showed us was in the foyer.
"The cave is actually the entire mountain."Miss Martian explained.
"It was hollowed out and reinforced by Superman and Green Lantern in the early days of the League."Kid Flash added.
"Then why abandon it for the Hall of Justice?"Super Boy questioned.
"The Cave's secret location was...compromised."Aqualad answered.
"So they traded it in for a tourist trap?"Superboy asked. "Yeah. That makes sense."
"If villains know of the cave, we must be on constant alert."Miss Martian insisted worriedly.
Robin took her hand which caused my left eye to twitch a little.
"The bad guys know we know they know about the place, so they'd never think to look here."Robin explained.
Kid Flash separated Robin and Miss Martian.
"Uh, he means we're hiding in plain sight."Kid Flash clarified.
"Ah. That's...much clearer."Miss Martian responded with a puzzled expression.
I rolled my eyes.
Boys.
"What those two idiots are trying to say is that since we know that they know where we are here, they won't come here because we'll be ready for them."I explained. "In other words, they won't have the element of surprise."
Superboy sniffed the air.
"Do I smell smoke?"Superboy asked.
"My cookies!"Miss Martian panicked.
Miss Martian flew off to the kitchen causing us to follow after her.
When we arrived in the kitchen, we saw Miss Martian remove a tray of badly burned cookies from the oven.
Reminds of the times, I baked cookies with Alfred when I was still six.
I ended up making burned cookies twice, but for the third time, they actually came out right.
"I was trying out Grammy Jones recipe from episode 17 of-"Miss Martian started. "Heh. Never mind."
"I bet they would have tasted great."I complemented with a smile.
Kid Flash chomps on one burned cookie to console Miss Martian, prompting a faint smile from her.
"He doesn't seem to mind."Robin pointed out.
"I...have a serious metabolism."Kid Flash admitted.
"I'll make more?"Miss Martian offered.
"It was sweet of you to make any."Aqualad said.
Miss Martian smiled. "Thanks, Aqualad."
"Call me Kaldur'ahm."Aqualad responded. "Actually, my friends call me Kaldur."
Kid Flash leaned against the counter, grinning at Miss Martian.
"I'm Wally. See, I already trust you with my secret ID. Unlike Mr Dark Glasses and Miss Hot Chick over here."Kid Flash teased while glancing at Robin and me. "Batman's forbidden Boy and Girl Wonder from telling anyone their real names."
I gave Kid Flash a hard glare behind my mask.
He seriously doesn't get it when I tell him not to call me names.
Wait, did he just say I was hot?
"My codename is Blue Jay like the passerine bird."I explained. "But most people call me, Jay or BJ."
"Mine's no secret."Miss Martian remarked. "It's M'gann M'orzz. But, you can call me Megan. It's an Earth name and I'm on Earth now."
"Get out of my head!"Superboy shouted angrily.
This caused all of us to stare at him.
"What's wrong? I don't understand."Miss Martian's voice rang suddenly in my head."Everyone on Mars communicates telepathically."
I covered my eyes as I felt my knees buckle slightly from the intrusion.
"M'gann, stop!"Aqualad ordered. "Things are different on Earth. Here, your powers are an extreme invasion of privacy."
Robin helped me up.
"Hey, c'mon, I got you."Robin whispered, grabbing my arm and placing a hand on my back, pulling me back on my feet. "You good?"
"Yeah."I mumbled. "Just wasn't expecting her to be in my head like that."
"Besides, Cadmus creepy little psychic genomes left a bad taste in his brain."Wally joked insensitively.
I sent the speedster a dirty look and threw one of the burnt cookies at his head.
"I–I didn't mean to-"Miss Martian stuttered and Superboy's glare hardened.
"Just stay out!"Superboy grunted before walking into the lounge.
"Hello Megan!"Megan said happily and hit her forehead. "I know what we can do!"
Megan flew away causing all of us to follow her, but then I stopped to look back at Superboy.
"Superboy, are you coming?"I asked.
Superboy glanced at me and I gave him a small smile.
I headed into the elevator, where the others were still waiting with the door open.
When Superboy stepped in, we went down to the hangar.
When the elevator doors opened, see this red pod thing.
"It's my martian bio-ship!"Miss Martian announced.
"Cute."Wally replied as we walked closer. "Not aerodynamic, but cute."
"It's at rest, silly. I'll wake it."Miss Martian declared and raises one of her hands causing the pod to instantly transform into a ship.
The ship turn around and a ramp to enter appeared.
"Well, are you coming?"Miss Martian inquired while walking in.
I shared a look with the boys before running after Miss M.
When we went inside the bio-ship, a bunch of seats appeared inside.
"Strap in for launch."Miss Martian ordered.
Me and Robin ran for the seats on the left, while Wally darted off to the right.
Robin took the one on the left corner and I took the one right beside it.
Aqualad and Superboy took the seats at the front and Wally had grabbed the one on the right corner.
Miss Martian settled herself at the helm.
It seemed that everything she needed was materialising the same way her clothes seemed to.
As I sat down, seat belts of an organic material instantly moved across my body, effectively strapping me in.
"Cool."I giggled quietly.
I looked back at Robin, who seemed to be intrigued by this.
"Red Tornado, please open the bay doors."Megan ordered politely through her comms system.
A second later the doors were opening and we flew out.
"Incredible."Robin praised.
"She sure is. I-I mean the ship."Wally stuttered. "Which, like all ships, is a she."
"Fast with his feet."Robin admitted. "Not so much with his mouth."
A smirk crept up my face.
"Dude!"Wally snapped with a glare.
As we continued to fly, I couldn't help but notice the look that Miss M continued to give Superboy.
"He'll come around."I assured.
"He doesn't seem to like me much."Miss Martian responded sadly.
"You guys remember he has super hearing, right?"Wally reminded.
"Hey, how about showing us a little martian shape-shifting?"Robin offered.
Megan stood up and transformed into a girl version of Robin.
It was close but not exact.
Still cool, then she does a little twirl and becomes Kid Flash before doing a little pose at the end.
"Is it wrong that I think I'm hot?"Wally rhetorically muttered.
"Impressive."Robin remarked and clapped. "But you know you're not exactly gonna fool anyone with those."
"Mimicking boys is a lot harder."Miss Martian admitted.
"Do me."I insisted with a small smile.
Miss Martian gave me an appreciative look before doing another twirl.
This time she comes about looking like a mission-ready me.
I stood up and the seatbelt recedes before I approached Miss M.
Her skin tone now matched mine and her hair was the same style I usually had it in.
Her suit was a perfect mirror image.
All my tools and toys were strapped on and her face (despite the domino mask) seemed pretty spot on.
"It's like a mirror."I stated in awe.
When Miss Martian transformed back, we both sat back down.
"And your clothes?"Aqualad inquired.
"They're organic, like the ship."Miss Martian replied. "They respond to my mental commands."
"As long as they're the only ones."Superboy stated.
"Can you do that ghosting through walls thing that Manhunter does?"Wally asked eagerly, which thankfully shifted the conversation.
"Density shifting? No."Miss Martian admitted. "I-it's a very advanced technique."
Me and Robin shared a mischievous look before smirking as he turned back to the group.
"Flash can vibrate his molecules right through a wall."Robin stated.
"When he tries it, bloody nose."I giggled motioning to Wally.
"BJ!"Wally snapped with a glare.
I felt my grin grow bigger as I laughed lightly.
"Here's something I can do."Miss Martian replied happily. "Camouflage mode."
Miss Martian divulges as the bioship turned invisible from the outside.
"Red Tornado to Miss Martian."Red Tornado's voice interrupted."An emergency alert has been triggered at the Happy Harbor Power Plant. I suggest you investigate. Covertly. I'm sending coordinates."
"Received."Miss Martian answered. "Adjusting course."
Robin sighed. "Tornado's keeping us busy again."
"Well, a simple fire led you all to Superboy."Megan commented. "We should find out what caused the alert."
"I think I know the cause."Superboy spoke up.
We all looked out the window to see a spinning tornado heading towards and it caught the ship.
I groaned as the bio-ship spun inside the tornado wildly.
But then the Bio-Ship flew out of the tornado and then hovered over the ground, allowing us to jump down.
I ran straight into the building from opposite sides, Robin heads for the guy causing the trouble straight on, while I decided to take a more discreet route.
Climbing up into the rafters.
"Ugh!"Robin groaned as he was knocked into a wall.
I took the opportunity to jump down from my place up top and land directly on the guy's back.
I try some of the moves Batman had taught you, aiming for pressure points, but nothing happened.
Instead the guy flung me off and I landed on my back right next to Robin with a painful groan of my own.
Superboy and the rest of the Team rushed in.
"Who's your new friend?"Superboy grunted.
"Didn't catch his name."I declared sarcastically while leaning up on my elbows.
"But he plays kinda rough."Robin added.
"My apologises."the guy answered. "You may address me as Mr Twister."
Mr Twister used his ability to blow Superboy into a wall behind us.
Robin and I got back up on our feet.
He was clutching his side and I had a hand on my back.
Wally pulled his goggles on and took off towards Mr Twister with all of us in tow.
Mr Twister knocked Wally out of the building and then pushed both Aqualad and Miss Megan back, leaving Robin and I the only ones standing.
Robin stood right in front of me as Mr Twister once again focuses on the two of you.
"I was prepared to be challenged by a superhero."Mr Twister sneered. "I was not, however, expecting children."
My eyes narrowed as my hands crept up under the pockets of my hoodie grabbing two exploding birdarangs from my utility belt that I wore underneath.
"We're not children!"I shouted.
I launched one of the exploding birdarangs as a diversion and then the other, which landed squarely in Mr Tornado's chest.
"Objectively, you are."Mr Tornado stated and flicked the bomb from his chest causing me to gasp. "Have you no adult supervision? I find your presence here quite disturbing."
"Well, we hate to see you disturbed!"I snapped back, not ready to give in yet.
"Let's see if you're more turbed once we kick your can!"Robin vowed.
Miss Martian brought some debris down on top of Mr Twister and then charged at him.
Superboy attacked from the top and I moved to attack from the bottom.
Superboy got knocked away first by Mr Twister and I followed soon after.
But this time landing awkwardly on my side, causing the pain to spread.
"Indeed. That was quite turbing."Mr Twister mused and exited the building. "Thank you."
I took a deep breath before pushing myself back onto my feet.
Me and the others headed out just in time to see Wally in the air.
"I got you, Wally."Miss Martian assured as she telekinetically caught Wally with her powers.
"Thanks."Wally thanked.
The six of us regrouped outside to confront the villain.
"I would have thought you had all learned your limitations by now."Mr Twister taunted.
"What do you want?"Aqualad yelled out.
"Isn't it obvious?"Mr Twister asked as he floated up. "I'm waiting for a real hero."
"Read his mind."Aqualad commanded. "Find a weakness."
"I thought I wasn't supposed to do that."Miss Martian said.
"It's okay with the bad guys."I clarified.
Miss Martian closed her eyes to concentrate.
"Nothing! I'm getting nothing!"Miss Martian answered before opening her eyes. "Hello, Megan! Mr Twister is Red Tornado in disguise! He's inorganic and an android. And how many androids do you know that can generate tornados?"
"Red Tornado sent us here."Aqualad chimed.
"After saying we'd be tested soon enough."I added with a frown.
"This is his test."Robin snarled. "Something to keep us busy."
"Speedy called it. We're a joke."Wally scowled. "This game, so over."
"We know who you are and what you want!"Robin shouted.
"So let's end this!"I admitted.
"Consider it ended."Mr Twister declared.
Suddenly the air around Mr Twister was shooting out causing the skies to darken.
"An impressive show, but we will not indulge you!"Aqualad yelled out as the first crack of thunder rolls. "We will not engage!"
I visibly jumped back and quickly went between Wally and Robin.
Both boys send me curious looks as a grip onto their arms.
"Uhm, c-can Red Tornado do that?"I questioned nervously.
The thunder got louder and my inner fear multiplies as I stared at the dark clouds with a frightened expression.
"You think I'm Tornado? Ironic."Mr Twister dictated.
Mr Twister created an explosion that knocked us all back and onto our backs as thunder was heard in the distance.
Miss Martian used her camouflaging abilities to hide us from Mr Twister's view so he won't see us.
"Fine, then."Mr Twister replied. "I won't deny you children have power, but playing hide-and-seek with you would not help me achieve my objectives. So stay concealed. If you confront me again, I will show no mercy."
I came out of the hiding spot as I heard the shouts of the boys as they angrily lash out at Miss Martian.
I focused my gaze on the dark clouds in the sky as someone placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Hey, hey. C'mon stand up."Robin instructed gently, pulling me up and unclenches my hands. "Take a deep breath."
I gently took a deep breath and let it out.
"Better?"Robin asked.
"Better."I responded with a small smile.
"Stay out of our way!"Superboy growled.
Superboy's outraged shout brought me and Robin back to the scene.
As the boy of steel runs off, Wally follows after him, my eyes drift to the Martian girl.
Taking in her expression, I looked at Aqualad and Robin.
"I'll talk to her."I insisted.
Aqualad nodded and chases after the other two boys.
Robin, however, looked skeptical about leaving me alone.
"I got this, Boy Wonder."I assured with a smile.
"Okay, but join us when your ready."Robin reminded.
Robin ran after the rest of the boys in the chase to go after Mr Twister while I sat down next to Miss Martian.
"I was just trying to be part of the team."Miss Martian replied sadly.
"To be honest, I'm not sure we really have a team."I admitted honestly.
A while later, me and Miss M went on the bio-ship to head back to HQ.
Together, the two of us slowly went back onto the bio-ship before contacting Red Tornado at HQ.
"The team really needs your help."Miss Martian attempted as we addressed our "den mother" over the video uplink.
"If I intervened, it would not be to help."Red Tornado responded. "Still, it is an odd coincidence that this Twister shares my elemental abilities and my immunity to telepathy."
"Hello, Megan."Miss Martian said once more, and you figure it must be her thing, as she turns the ship around. "Rule 1, never give up."
Reaching into my pockets, I pulled out a small canister.
I pressed the button in the middle and it broke in two.
Then with outstretched arms, I pressed another button and they extend into a black electric scooter with a blue jay design on it.
"Whoah."Miss Martian remarked as she steered the ship.
I nodded. "I know."
"You brought that with you?"Miss Martian asked.
"Rule 2 newbie, always be prepared."I answered with a smirk.
Miss Martian looked down for a moment before looking at me again.
"I have a plan, Jay."Miss Martian responded nervously. "But I'm gonna need to tell the boys."
"Do what you have to, they'll understand."I assured soothingly. "Even if not immediately."
Miss Martian took a deep breath and started communicating the others.
"Listen to me, all of you."Miss Martian begged.
"What did we tell you?"Superboy's voice rang out.
"I know and I know I messed up."Miss Martian replied. "But now I'm very clear on what we need to do. Please trust me."
Once Miss Martian received confirmation, she launched into retelling her plan and it seemed like a pretty damn good one to me.
As we got closer to Mr Twister's location, Miss Martian told me she was gonna drop me down somewhere early, so as not to alert Mr Twister of anything.
She dropped me about a block away from the action took place and I rode to where everything was going down.
I zoomed passed a couple of people that were running away and hid behind a container.
I pressed a button on my scooter to revert back to it's canister form as I awaited for my signal.
"Hit the showers, boys."Red Tornado ordered as he landed between the boys and Mr Twister. "I was hoping you could handle this yourself, but clearly you cannot."
"But we have a plan now."Robin protested.
"The subject is not up for debate."Red Tornado retorted.
The boys didn't say anything and stalked off.
Soon enough they joined me, backs pressed to the container before breaking off to their spots for the plan.
"I was beginning to think you'd never show up!"Mr Twister nagged.
"I'm here now!"Red Tornado responded.
Then both androids sent a twister at one another.
When the swirls subsided, neither of the androids seemed affected.
"We are evenly matched, Twister!"Red Tornado shouted.
"No, Tornado!"Mr Twister denied. "We are not!"
Mr Twister was suddenly shoot straight electricity.
When Twister hit Red, the android went down.
"Remain still, android."Mr Twister commanded as he summoned some wires and staled closer to the down Red Tornado. "The reprogramming won't take long."
I glanced at Robin.
"Reprogramming?"I whispered.
Robin shrugged in respond.
"Longer than you might think."Miss Martian replied.
Miss Martian transformed out of Red Tornado's body to her own which was the cue I had been waiting for.
The plan was good, allowing Mr Twister to think he got what he came for, allowed us to slide in when he wasn't expecting it.
"No."Mr Twister muttered.
Wally launched Mr Twister towards me with his speed-twister, that he had been using to help M'gann with her charade.
Once Twister was in range, I took out my whip and started spinning him around quickly.
Then I made my whip release Mr Twister and sent him towards Superboy.
Superboy took the chance to pummel Twister towards the water.
Mr Twister went under and moments later Aqualad hurled him back up.
Miss Martian lifted Twister's body into the air using a telechentic attack to pull at his gear, and allowing Robin an opening to launch a bunch of exploding batarangs.
When Twister fell back to the ground the chest area opened and a man wearing a green jumpsuit fell out.
"Foul."the man groaned. "I-I call foul."
Miss Martian raised her arm and in a second a rock came down smashing the man.
"M'gann, no!"Aqualad protested.
For a moment it's eerily silent until Robin gets fired up.
"Don't know how things are done on Mars, but on Earth, we don't execute our captives!"Robin shouted angrily.
"You said you trust me."Miss Martian replied simply.
Lifting the rock, only to reveal that the man in green was not a man at all, but instead another android.
"That's why I couldn't read his mind."Miss Martian remarked.
I walked forward and bent down to grab the robotic green eyeball and tossed it over to Wally.
"Cool."Wally said while catching it with one hand and smirked. "Souvenir."
"We should have had more faith in you."Aqualad admitted.
"Yeah! You rocked this mission. Get it?Rocked."Wally joked. "Heh."
"Ignore him."Robin insisted. "We're all just turbed you're on the team."
"Extremely turbed."I added with my arms folded.
"Heh. Thanks."Miss Martian answered with a smile. "Me too."
All content with small smiles on our faces, we loaded back onto Miss M's bio-ship and went back to the mountain with the android pieces in tow.
Later that Night...
The six of us and Red Tornado looked at the robot's remains that we had laid out in the main training area at HQ.
"It was clearly created to sabotage or destroy you."Aqualad suggested.
"Agreed."Red Tornado responded.
"Is that why you wouldn't help us?"Miss Martian asked.
"No. This was your battle."Red Tornado admitted. "I do not believe it is my role to solve your problems for you. Nor should you solve mine for me."
"But if you're in danger-"Miss Martian started.
"Consider this matter closed."Red Tornado interrupted before walking away.
"Batman, Aquaman, Canary or Flash, they'd have jumped right in to fix things."Wally muttered.
"Guess if we're gonna have a baby sitter; a heartless machine is exactly what we need."Robin commented.
"Dude!"Wally scolded. "Harsh."
"Not cool."I agreed, shaking my head.
"And inaccurate."Red Tornado added and glanced at us. "I have a heart; carbon-steel alloy. I also have excellent hearing."
"Heh. Right. Sorry."Robin apologised. "I'll strive to be more accurate."
"And more respectful."Aqualad added
Then Red Tornado walked away from us.
I smiled looking back to the boys to grab their attention.
"You know-"I started.
"Speedy was wrong."Wally finished.
"This team thing."Robin added.
"Might just work out."Aqualad concluded.
Wally, Aqualad, Superboy and Miss Martian lead me toward the kitchen and living room as I walked beside Robin.
Robin suddenly grabbed my arm, stopping me for a moment, waiting for Wally to be out of earshot.
"What happened out there?"Robin questioned. "As soon as Twister made the skies go dark you totally froze. Don't tell your still scared of the dark."
"No, Dick."I answered and managed to crack a small smile. "I'm not scared of the dark."
"But you're scared of something."Robin complemented.
"Everybody is scared of something."I mused.
"No, seriously. What happened, Emi?"Robin asked. "What are you so scared of?"
"Robin, please just drop it."I answered firmly. "I'll tell you some other time. But not right now. I am not ready."
Robin sighed in defeat.
"Fine."Robin grumbled. "Just promise me not to keep too many secrets."
"I won't...I promise."I assured with a wink.
Robin and I shared a smile before following after our companions.
