Chapter 4: Drop Zone
Caribbean Sea
July 22, 20:08 ECT
The six of us were in the bio-ship and were approaching near to our destination which was an island known as Santa Prisca.
Today was our very first mission as a team which I was excited about.
Well, it's actually a recon mission since big boss Batman told us that we are only going there to observe and report.
The only thing I worried about is if we mess this up, we're gonna have to deal with the angry Batman.
And the last thing I ever wanna do is make my mentor angry and disappointed.
That also includes getting a bad report sent to my mum.
My thoughts got interrupted when Miss M's voice spoke up.
"We're approaching Santa Prisca."Miss Martian stated. "Drop Zone A in 30."
After the announcement, Aqualad stood up from his seat which melt back into the bio-ship.
"Ready."Aqualad declared.
"You sure you don't need a hand?"I asked.
"I'm sure you're needed elsewhere, my friend."Aqualad replied sagely.
"Putting the bio-ship in camouflage mode."Miss Martian responded.
A hole opened in the bio-ship.
Miss Martian kept the bio-ship hovering over Drop Zone A so that Aqualad could jump through and straight into the ocean below.
I stayed about two miles offshore until I got a sign from Kaldur that it was clear to move forward.
"Heat and motion sensors are patched."Aqualad's voice rang from the comms as Miss Martian moved us forward. "Data is now on a continuous loop. Move-in."
"Drop zone B."Miss Martian announced.
Miss Martian dropped lines for those of us, who couldn't fly to attach onto.
Kid Flash pressed the emblem on his chest which caused his familiar yellow red suit to be turned dark and into stealth camouflage.
He looked at Miss M while showing off his newly upgraded suit.
"How cool is this?"Kid Flash asked.
"Very impressive."Miss Martian remarked before changing her uniform to black and red using her mental abilities.
"Uh that works, too."Kid Flash commented lovingly.
I rolled my eyes as Kid Flash looked at Superboy.
"Hey, Supey. Not too late to put on the new stealth tech."Kid Flash admitted and looked at me with a smirk. "You too, girlie. We could hook you up with a new costume."
"That's sweet, KF."I answered with a fake smile. "I'll take my leather jacket and combat boots any day."
"No capes, no tights, no offensive."Superboy replied with his arms crossed.
"It totally works for you in that you can totally do good work in those clothes."Miss Martian responded with a shy smile.
As I came upon drop site B, the holes in the bottom of the bio-ship appeared once more and the lines followed.
Hooking myself to the drop line, I sent one look to everyone before sliding down.
The rest followed after me before moving out of the way to make room for Superboy, who chose to jump down instead.
Superboy smirked as the dirt cleared from his impact with the ground.
"Knew I didn't need a line."Superboy said smugly.
"And yet creating a seismic event may not have helped us much with the covert."Robin complained bitterly.
"Aqualad, Drop B is a go."Miss Martian informed.
"Head for the factory."Aqualad answered. "I'll track your GPS and rendezvous ASAP."
"Roger that."Robin replied as he pulled something up using n his wrist computer and hologlove.
All of us scanned the screen before heading off.
I walked through the dark jungle for a while, quiet and alert.
Robin was leading the way as I stood beside Kid Flash.
"Did you hear that?"Superboy asked abruptly.
"Uh, no."Kid Flash responded.
"Wait, is this a super hearing thing?"I questioned.
"You do have great ears."Miss Martian commented dreamily.
A small smirk started pulling at my lips.
The girl had it bad.
"Ok, Robin, now what?"Kid Flash asked.
All of us turned to where the Boy Wonder had been mere moments ago.
"Man, I hate it when he does that!"
"Don't we all."I agreed with a frown.
"Superboy, Blue Jay, Kid, switch to infrared."Aqualad suggested from over the comms. "See if you're being tracked."
I hit the small panel beside the comm button on my wrist band before glancing around the infrared filter now enacted through my domino mask.
"Got a squad of armed bozos incoming."Kid Flash noted.
"Two squads."Superboy corrected.
"But they'll meet each other before they find us."I responded.
Suddenly the two groups began to shoot at each other, the sound of the bullets being fired loud and clear.
"No super hearing required now."Kid Flash joked.
"Swing wide, steer clear."Aqualad ordered.
"Yeah, as soon as I find Rob."Kid Flash declared before speeding off.
Kid Flash runs of to find Robin, only to end up tripping and falling into the middle of the skirmish.
Me and the rest of the Team arrived and fight off the two squads.
Superboy tackled Bane to the ground as Robin threw a goon to another.
"What is wrong with you, guys?"Robin shouted. "Remember covert? Why didn't you follow my lead, vanish into the jungle?!"
"Oh! That's what you were doing?"I scowled as I whacked the guns from three goons away with my whip. "Way to fill us in!"
"We're not mind readers, you know!"Kid Flash added.
Miss Martian comes up behind him, telekinetically taking a guy down.
"Er, I'm not anyway."Kid Flash commented.
"You told me I could only read the bad guys' minds."Miss Martian reminded.
As soon as all the shooters were taken down, I tied them up with the trees.
"I recognize those uniforms."Robin informed."They belong to the cult of the Kobra."
"I am certain Batman would have mentioned it If he knew a dangerous extremist was running Santa Prisca's Venom operation."Aqualad stated.
"Agreed."Robin said. "And since there's clearly no love lost between the cultists and those goons, I'm betting Kobra came in and tossed them out. That's why normal supply lines have been cut off."
"We get it. Kobra wanted super cultists. Mystery solved."I retorted with annoyed look. "Radio Bats and we'll be home in time-"
"These cultists aren't on Venom! Kobra's hoarding the stuff!"Robin argued. "We don't leave. Not until I know why!"
"Until you know why?"I demanded with a glare.
"This team needs a leader."Robin replied.
"And it's you?"I scoffed.
"Dude, you're a 13 year old kid who ducked out on us without a word!"Kid Flash added.
"Haha! And you're a mature 15?"Robin snapped. "You blew our cover first chance you got!"
I rolled my eyes as I let out another scoff, saddling up to where Superboy and Miss M were.
I was thoroughly tired of Robin and his controlling needs.
"Don't you want to lead?"Miss Martian questioned.
"No way."I responded honestly. "I don't need anybody else scrutinizing my every move."
Superboy shook his head in agreement before looking at Miss Martian.
"You?"Superboy asked.
"After the Mr Twister fiasco?"Miss Martian inquired.
"You did all right."Superboy admitted.
Miss Martian blushed at Superboy's respond.
I smirked in amusement.
Miss M definitely had the hots for Superboy.
"Yeah? You don't even have superpowers!"Kid Flash shouted.
"Neither does Batman!"Robin defended.
"Duh, you're not Batman."Kid Flash pointed out.
"Duh, closest thing we've got!"Robin retorted.
"Such clever niños."Bane spoke up. "But you only know half the story. Let me show you the rest. I can get you into the factory via my secret entrance."
I send Miss Martian a nod and she crouched down in front of the villain in question, focusing her abilities on him.
"There is a secret entrance, but he's also hiding something."Miss Martian commented.
Miss Martian's eyes went green as she focuses more of her energy into rooting through his mind.
"Ah, ah, ah, chica."Bane informed with a smirk. "Bane is not that easy."
I narrowed my eyes on the painted faced man.
"Ohh. He's mentally reciting fútbol scores en Espanol."Miss Martian stated. "This could take a while."
"It's not complicated."Bane commented. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
After a few moments in debate, we decided to let Bane go (which I wholeheartedly disagreed with) and he began to lead us up a cliff, to a spot where we could see over the entire factory.
I noticed the shipping containers and product on the ground.
"Look at all that product."I muttered.
"A buy is going down."Robin responded. "But if Kobra's not selling to the usual suspects, then-"
"We need to identify that buyer."Aqualad concluded.
"Just what I was thinking."Kid Flash agreed.
"Yeah, you're the thinker."Robin stated in sarcasm.
"Sarcasm? Dude."Kid Flash said.
"A real leader would focus on getting answers."I answered.
My eyes followed the man with the painted face as he moved toward some rocks.
"Answers are this way."Bane responded.
Bane moved the boulder to the side and showed us what looked to be an old mining tunnel.
"So now el luchador is our leader."Kid Flash retorted.
I simply slapped the back of Kid Flash's head for his stupidity and pettiness.
I walked a bit further until Bane comes to a stop, he hits a button and a light goes green.
A hidden door appeared and slowly opened it.
I took a peek inside before turning back to the group.
"All clear."Robin responded.
Robin sneaked off before we could stop him, disappearing once more.
"Has that little fool already been caught?"Bane inquired.
"No, he just does that."Aqualad replied.
"Stay put."Kid Flash instructed. "I'll get our intel and be back before the boy wonder."
Kid Flash rushed off pettily as I simply face palmed.
"Wait, Kid!"Aqualad called out.
"I got them and I'll make sure they don't kill each other."I assured simply.
I stepped forward and followed the path the two boys went to.
I was virtually silent on my feet as I made it into the control room up top.
As I entered, I spotted the two boys crowded around a computer and stealthily joined them.
"I'm guessing it involves Venom, but-"Robin started.
Suddenly a new graphic appeared on the screen which seemed to be a chemical breakdown of some sorts.
"This one's Venom and that one's-"Kid Flash exclaimed and became stunned by the result. "Whoa!"
"The blockbuster formula from Cadmus."I added.
This alerted the two boys of my presence causing Kid Flash to jump a little.
"Mixed correctly, Kobra's new juice is three times stronger than Venon...and permanent."I complemented with a hint of shock.
"But how did Kobra get access to Project Blockbuster?"Kid Flash questioned.
"Our mystery buyer must also be Kobra's supplier!"Robin admitted in realisation. "Using the cult to create a Blockbuster Venom Super Formula."
Robin tried to contact Aqualad, but failed to do so.
"Robin to Aqualad, we got...static."Robin declared.
Robin turned his attention back to me and Kid Flash.
I bite my lip for a second with furrowed brows.
"We keep looking."I requested.
Me, Kid Flash and Robin continued to scour for any information we could find until I heard gunfire and the subsequent sounds of fighting.
The minute I heard the first gunshot, I rushed out of the room.
Kid Flash realised what was happening and together we took down a few Kobra agents before I heard Miss Martian's voice.
Miss Martian's voice echoed in my head as she set up the link.
"Everyone online?"Miss Martian asked.
"Yeah."Superboy huffed.
"You know it, beautiful."Kid Flash flirted.
I groaned in annoyance before replying to Miss M.
"Where else would we be?"I asked sarcastically, as I brought my elbow back to hit a Kobra agent and then flip him over.
"Good."Aqualad commented. "We need to regroup."
I used my dark binoculars to scan the warehouse for members of your team before placing it away.
"Busy now."Robin shot back.
My eyes narrowed on Robin and he was squaring off with King Kobra's new toy.
I notice bad guys starting to come at me from almost all directions.
You could feel them closing in and decide to give them something to whine about.
I grabbed a few marble bombs from my utility belt and threw them out around me before throwing a small container and smoke came out to blind the bad guys.
I jumped over them and rush to help Aqualad, the boom of the bombs sounding off behind me as you ran.
"Robin, now!"Aqualad announced. "Strategic retreat! Kid, clear a path!"
Kid Flash rushed by, making a path for me to retreat into the mining tunnels from before.
I stayed back, doing my best to cover the rest as they file in, leaving me and Superboy to a dead end.
"Superboy, Blue Jay, the support beams!"Aqualad shouted.
With a nod, Superboy takes the one on the left and I kicked the one on the right.
Miss Martian grabbed Superboy and Kid Flash picked me up in bridal style to get us away from the area.
Then the ceiling came falling down which made large rocks and boulders come crashing down behind us seconds later.
Now that we were caved in and in the dark, Robin cracked a few glow sticks, which bathed the space in red light.
"How could my first mission as leader go so wrong?"Robin groaned.
"You do have the most experience."Aqualad stated. "Perhaps that is exactly what has left you unprepared. Fighting alongside Batman, your roles are defined. You two do not need to talk. But this team is new. And a leader must be clear, explicit. He cannot vanish and expect others to play parts in an unknown plan."
"Oh, so I'm supposed to hold everyone's hands!"Robin scowled and then sighed. "Who am I kidding? You should lead us, Kaldur. You're the only one who can."
"Please! I can run circles-"Kid Flash started.
I nudged Kid Flash on the stomach to shut him up.
"Kid Flash, come on."I retorted. "You know he's the one. We all do."
"Hello, M'gann! It's so obvious."Miss Martian agreed.
"Could have told you."Superboy stated simply and shrugged his shoulders.
"Okay."Kid Flash responded simply.
"Then I accept the burden until you are ready to lift it from my shoulders."Aqualad said and walked in front of Robin. "You were born to lead this team, maybe not now, but soon."
Robin gives Aqualad a small nod.
"All right."Aqualad declared. "Our first priority is preventing that shipment from leaving this island."
"Funny. I had the same thought."Robin smirked. "Sportsmaster is the supplier/buyer."
The six of us started heading to the exit of the cave as Robin's eyes switched between the ground in front of him and the pop-up holo screen of his wrist computer.
"But it still doesn't track."I reminded. "He doesn't have the juice to acquire the Blockbuster Formula or to get Kobra to do his dirty work."
"And neither of them have the chops to bond blockbuster with Venom."Kid Flash added. "That took some major nerd age."
"I believe the expression is tip of the iceberg."Aqualad admitted.
I glared at the hulking figure ahead of us, which revealed to be none other than Bane with a trigger on his hand.
In addition, we notice bombs attached to the ceiling above our heads.
"Halt, niños."Bane greeted evilly. "I'm feeling explosive."
"You betrayed us."Aqualad scoffed. "Why?"
My eyes started darting around, analysing the the area.
"I want my factory back."Bane replied.
"Kid, you'll need a running start."Aqualad's voice ordered.
We all glared at Bane as he explained his reason for 'helping' us out in the first place.
"So I forced you into a situation 'Where you would either take down my enemies or die trying'."Bane explained. "If the latter, the Justice League would certainly have come to avenge their sidekicks. And when the smoke cleared, Santa Prisca would be mine once more. Blowing the tunnel with you inside should have the same effect."
Bane opened his hand to press the button, but it wasn't there.
"With what?"Kid Flash joked leaning against a tree behind him. "This trigger thingy?"
Bane charged at Kid Flash but was stopped and lifted into the air.
"Finally. Drop him."Superboy ordered with a smirk.
Miss Martian released Bane and Superboy punched him in the face, which knocked the villain out cold.
With Bane down, we all made our way to where the helicopter was still grounded and devised a plan.
Kid Flash rushed out and distracted most of the men.
Superboy went next, landing in front of King Kobra and his new monster.
Aqualad came out 3rd with his water bearers ready, Superboy having served as a distraction.
Miss Martian camouflaged and went in as backup.
I was next to drop down from the roof, onto one of Kobra's men.
My legs lock around his head and fling my body weight back causing him to flew over my body.
The man landed unconscious and I went back up on my feet, swiping the mask from his face before tossing it to Kid Flash.
"Souvenir."Kid Flash responded and caught the mask.
"I know you hate getting your hands dirty."Robin teased from his spot across from Kobra.
I stood a few yards back with my eyes watching the situation unfold.
"True."King Kobra agreed as he removed his hood to reveal his face. "But sometimes, even a god must stoop to conquer."
Robin tried to fight King Kobra, but he was no match against him.
King Kobra threw Robin away, but Boy Wonder stopped attacking and just glared.
"What's wrong, boy?"King Korba taunted. "You look disconcerted."
I moved to jump in but we were signaled to wait as Robin began his attack.
I hear the explosion go off as the helicopter began to crash into the factory.
A parachute jumped out and Sportsmaster got away, but that was a fight for later.
We all regrouped behind Robin as we watched King Kobra's foot slam onto his chests
"I am plagued by mosquitoes."King Kobra stated.
"Good cause this mosquito's mighty concerted over your pain."Robin answered.
Robin did a back flip and landed behind us.
"Another time, then."King Kobra insisted and went into the shadows.
Me and Robin rushed to where King Kobra went, but he was no where to be seen.
"We picked the right guy to lead."I remarked.
I smiled at Aqualad, who gave me a nod in reply.
"Automatically making you the right guy to explain this mess to Batman."Robin added.
Robin gestured to the flaming and broken mess all around us before cracking up in laughter.
I suddenly remembered something which caused my happy mood to be replaced with a nervous one.
Man, we were so going to get it when we returned to Mount Justice.
Mount Justice
August 4, 01:06 EDT
I had my head down as I stood between Robin and Wally.
Batman had been lecturing all of us since we landed back to Mount Justice 45 minutes ago.
In other words, the Dark Knight had listed the list of errors we have done for our first mission together.
"A simple recon mission, observe and report. You'll each receive a written evaluation detailing your many mistakes."Batman retorted, but then his voice change to a soft one. "Until then, good job."
I looked up in surprise at Batman's words before my eyes darted to Robin and Kid Flash before settling back.
"No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy."Batman explained. "How you adjust to the unforeseen is what determines success. And how you choose who leads determines character."
Small looks of relief and glee spread on our faces as we all relaxed.
I let out a breath as I smiled at Robin and my other team mates.
I guess (despite the outcomes) we all did well in our first mission after all.
