Chapter 5: Schooled
Mount Justice

Blue Jay's POV
I stood with Robin and Miss Martian as we watched Kid Flash and Aqualad play an air hockey game.
"Recognised: Superboy, B-0-4."the computer's voice rang out through the cave.
Superboy walked into the cave and began approaching us.
"Hi, Superboy."Miss Martian greeted politely. "How was Metropolis?"
Superboy didn't offer a real response and simply walked passed us.
It seemed that something has taken a toll on him.
Then Black Canary and Martian Manhunter entered the cave.
"Ready for training, everyone?"Black Canary asked.
"Always."I assured with a small smirk.
"Uncle J'onn!"Miss Martian cheered, running up to her uncle and hugging him.
"M'gann, I was in the neighborhood, so I thought I'd see how you were adjusting."Martian Manhunter replied.
"A few bumps, but I'm learning."Miss Martian answered honestly.
"That's all I can ask."Martian Manhunter commented.
I couldn't help but notice Superboy beginning to walk away.
"Stick around. Class is in session."Black Canary declared, effectively stopping Superboy. "I consider it an honour to be your teacher."
Black Canary set up the training board up.
"I'll throw a lot at you. Everything I've learned from my own mentors."Black Canary stated and winced. "Ugh! And my own bruises."
Black Canary paused for a moment, pulling off her jacket and wincing as it tugged on the most recent of her injuries.
"What happened?"Miss Martian asked in concern.
"The job."I answered.
This caused me to earn a small smile from Black Canary while I focused back on the class.
"Now, combat is about controlling conflict, putting the battle on your terms."Black Canary explained. "You should always be acting, never reacting. I'll need a sparring partner."
Before I could raise my hand, Kid Flash had already stepped up, eating the last of his banana.
I couldn't help but smirk, knowing full well that he would lose within the next 30 or so seconds.
"Right here! Yeah! After this-"Kid Flash started as he threw his banana peel in the trash and stepped into the training ring. "Swish! I'll show you my moves."
Black Canary lunged at Kid Flash in seconds, effectively knocking him over, by first throwing a punch which he blocked and then swiping his feet out from under him.
"Aah! Uh!"Kid Flash groaned. "Ohh! Hurts so good!"
As KF laid on the ground, a sign popped up beside him on the training board which said,'Kid Flash Status: Fail.'
"Good block."Black Canary said. "But did anyone see what he did wrong?"
"Ooh, ooh."Robin sneered. "He hit on teacher and got served?"
I covered my mouth to laugh lightly as Kid Flash sent a glare at Robin.
"Dude!"Kid Flash scowled.
"He allowed me to dictate the terms of-"Black Canary started.
"Oh, please. With my powers, the battle's always on my terms."Superboy stated conceitedly. "I'm a living weapon and this is a waste of my time."
Black Canary smirked. "Prove it."
Superboy walked onto the training board and Kid Flash stepped back.
The two stepped into a fighting stance, and Superboy threw the first punch, which Black Canary easily redirected, using its momentum to flip him over.
The words 'Superboy Status: Fail' appeared next to his downed form.
Robin started to laugh, but Aqualad elbowed him to become mute.
Superboy stood up and glared at Black Canary.
"You're angry."Black Canary said. "Good, but don't react. Channel that anger into-"
Black Canary was trying to teach, but was cut off when Superboy charged once more.
This time she dodged a full-body attack and landed swiftly behind him, kicking his feet out from under him, sending him to the floor once more.
The words 'Superboy Status: Fail' appeared again.
"That's it. I'm done!"Superboy retorted and slapped away Black Canary's outstretched hand.
"Training is mandatory."Black Canary reminded.
I bit down on my lip as I watched as Black Canary's eyes narrowed.
Somehow, Superboy was saved by a new interruption, "Batman to the Cave," dad's face appeared on a holo-screen, pulling mine and everyone's attention.
"Five hours ago, a new menace attacked Green Arrow and Black Canary."Batman stated. "The attacker was capable of studying, then duplicating the powers and abilities of its opponents. Arrow called in reinforcements, which nearly proved disastrous as our foe gained more and more power with each new combatant."
"Whoa!"Kid Flash said in shock. "One guy with the powers of the entire League?"
"In the end, it took eight leaguers to dismantle the android."Batman complemented.
"An android?"I asked. "Who made it, T.O. Morrow?"
"Good guess, Blue Jay, but Red Tornado doesn't think so."Batman corrected.
"The technology bears the signature of professor Ivo."Martian Manhunter admitted.
"Ivo? But Ivo's dead."Aqualad interrupted.
"So we all thought...or hoped."Black Canary responded.
"To make certain this threat is permanently neutralised, we're sending two trucks carrying the android's parts to two separate S.T.A.R. lab facilities in Boston and New York for immediate evaluation."Batman explained. "Every precaution is being taken. We'll have four additional decoy trucks to create confusion in case Ivo or anyone tries to recover the remains. You will split into undercover teams to safeguard the two real trucks."
"Yes!"Kid Flash cheered, clearly pumped. "Road trip!"
"So now we take out your trash."Superboy retorted rudely.
"You had something better to do?"Batman asked as he narrowed his eyes.
I gulped a little.
I had to admit with his face blown up so large on the holo-screen, my mentor's glare seemed even more intimidating.
Superboy didn't reply as Aqualad checked on his transmitter.
"Coordinates received."Aqualad responded. "On our way."
All of us headed to the locker room and then to the hanger.
Litchfield County
August 3rd, 20:08 EDT
Me, Robin and my other teammates stood in our bikes as we waited to receive the signal to start following the trucks.
I was wearing a white muscle tank, leather jacket, jeans and combat boots.
"Why don't you have to wear one of these?"Kid Flash questioned, gesturing to the ridiculous suits that he and the rest of the team were wearing.
"Cause I didn't want to."I answered with a smirk.
"I don't either!"Kid Flash complained.
I became alarmed when I heard the trucks' engines rev to life.
"Maybe."I replied smugly and placed on my helmet. "But you're not the one who's been riding bikes like these your entire life."
"S.T.A.R. Boston is a go."A voice said.
"S.T.A.R. Manhattan is a go."Another voice repeated.
With those words, I began to trail after the trucks.
Me, Superboy and Robin were trailing one, while Aqualad, Miss Martian and Kid Flash followed after the other.
"If dislike is the opposite of like, is disaster the opposite of aster?"Robin demanded.
"So, instead of things going wrong, they go right?"I asked, turning my head for a second to look at him.
Robin doesn't answer and I immediately noticed why.
It seemed that Superboy's anger seemed to be bothering him.
"Uh, clearly, you're not feeling the aster."Robin concluded.
"What's wrong?"I asked.
"Canary."Superboy answered, clearly upset with our mentor. "What business does she have teaching combat skills to a guy with super strength?"
"Taking down stronger guys is part of the gig."Robin admitted.
"Black Canary learned that the hard way."I added. "Same with Batman, Robin and me."
Superboy made his motorcycle go ahead causing me and Robin to follow after him.
After saying that, I rode in silence after that and I probably would've kept the tense silence until the drop-off point if not for the robots.
"Robin, Blue Jay, Superboy!"Aqualad's voice came over the comms. "Our truck is being attacked!"
A frowned crept up to my face.
"kind of figured."Robin added while studying the robots.
"Are they monkeys?"I asked.
"I hate monkeys."Superboy muttered.
"Robot monkeys! Ha ha!"Robin laughed sarcastically. "Totally Ivo's tweaked style!"
Robin switched his bike to battle mode and I quickly did the same.
"Hey, hey!"Robin shouted. "Switch your ride to battle mode!"
"No point."Superboy commented.
Superboy jumped off the bike and directly onto the truck.
I managed to swerve to avoid his bike, but Robin couldn't.
Robin ditched his bike, also jumping onto the truck before the two bikes collided.
"Or not."I mumbled simply.
I watched as my two teammates took on the robots on the truck.
The boys began to fight the robotic monkeys, as I tried to look for an opening.
Turning my bike to auto, I got close and make the jump onto the truck.
Climbing to the top, I entered a fighting stance and pulled out my whip.
I began using it to battle the monkeys, knocking them down and hacking them to pieces.
At one point, I hear Superboy cry out and risk a glance towards him.
The clone was being carried up in the air by a bunch of monkeys.
I quickly brought my attention back to the fight and I whacked four monkey robots away as Robin climbed onto the top of the truck and took out his escrima sticks.
The two of us stood back to back as we worked together to defeat the pesky robots.
Suddenly Superboy jumped onto the truck as a few monkey robots destroyed the tyres causing the truck to go out of control.
Robin went down a bit to warn the driver.
"Get out!"Robin shouted.
Me and Robin alongside the drive jumped off the truck causing us to land into the fields next to the road.
We carefully helped the driver out of the fields just in time to see the monkey robots burst out of the damaged van and fly away while holding a small container.
Superboy angrily removed the truck off him and jumped after the robots.
"Superboy!"I yelled out.
"Aqualad to Robin and Blue Jay."Aqualad's voice interrupted. "We've lost our cargo. Did you-"
"It's gone."Robin sighed. "And so is our partner."
"Aqualad to Superboy."Aqualad said. "Radio your position. We'll help you."
"I don't need help!"Superboy shouted angrily."Don't want any!"
"Superboy?"Aqualad tried again, but there was no response. "Superboy!"
"I think he ditched his comm."Robin admitted.
"Super!"Kid Flash complained in sarcasm. "Now we can't even track him!"
"He's out of my telepathic range."Miss Martian responded. "This professor Ivo, if he is alive, seems to be two steps ahead of us. M-maybe w-we should contact Red Tornado?"
"Tornado always tells us to handle things ourselves."Aqualad reminded. "And the mission can still succeed if we recover the parts before they're re-assembled."
"Well, that's a great plan, except for the part about us not knowing where to look!"Kid Flash shot back.
My bike arrived behind me and Robin as a realisation came into my mind.
"Maybe we do."I declared before walking forward to examine one of the trashed monkeys with my mini laptop. "We'd have heard by now if the decoy trucks had been attacked. So how did these monkeys know exactly which trucks to target?"
I glanced at Robin and he plugged his wrist computer into the monkey and began scanning.
"Ha! The parts have GPS."Robin stated. "The monkeys can track the signal. Which means we can track them with the one we captured!"
"It looks both sets of parts are converging on-"I started.
I paused when I spotted the name of the location.
"Gotham City."Robin finished.
"That far south?"Aqualad questioned. "M'gann and I won't get there anytime soon. I'm sending Kid on ahead to meet you. Aqualad out."
I picked up the trashed monkey robot as Robin went on my bike.
"Definitely a disaster."Robin declared.
"Heavy on the dis."I mumbled as I sat behind him.
The two of us drove for a while before making a pit stop to change out of our civvies and into our usual suits.
As I finished, Robin got back on the bike and I gave him a frown.
"Why do you get to drive?"I asked suddenly.
"What?"Robin questioned.
Robin turned to me, caught off guard by the random question.
"Well, it's my bike, but you're driving."I commented as I narrowed my eyes through my domino mask. "How is that fair?"
"It's not?"Robin asked.
His answer sounded more like a question than a statement.
"Exactly."I agreed with a playful smile. "So I should drive."
"Jay, we don't have time for this."Robin reminded. "Just get on so we can go."
"We have time for your dis and asters but not enough to decide who's driving?"I muttered bitterly as Robin started the bike once again.
"Sorry?"Robin said, which sounded like a question.
"Whatever."I retorted quietly.
Robin pulled back out and onto the main road.
I wrapped my arms around Robin's waist as he drove and my cheeks had lost the slight tint on them when I settled into the drive.
When I began to see the signs that state we were getting near Gotham, I glanced at Robin.
"So...what is exactly is the plan?"I asked.
Robin smirked. "Isn't that usually your job to make one?"
I opened my mouth to respond, just in time to hear a familiar whooshing sound, looking over and see Kid Flash in his original suit.
"So you changed too?"Robin asked.
"You kidding?"Kid Flash shuddered. "Ugh. I feel naked in civvies."
"We all feel naked in civvies."I mused.
"You do?"Kid Flash sneered and sent me a playful wink.
"Yes, stupid."I scowled in annoyance.
"Your still tracking the parts?"Kid Flash asked, turning to Robin.
"They were heading through Gotham, but they veered-"I started.
"Wait."Robin said as he checked the small holo-information on his helmet. "Dude, they're at m-"
Robin cut himself off for a second, but I knew what he was going to say.
"They're at Gotham City Academy!"Robin admitted.
My eyes widen in disbelief.
Our school.
Once we arrived at Gotham Academy, Robin took the lead while me and Kid Flash followed him to the gym.
I hear a crash from inside and I sent a nod to Kid Flash.
Kid Flash sped around to the opposite side, and the three of us entered at the same time.
I immediately headed for a higher vantage point while Robin stuck to the shadows.
I saw the wind up as the android had Superboy in his grasp, but Kid Flash proved himself again to be the most dramatic person I know.
"Yoink!"Kid Flash shouted, grabbing Superboy from what seemed to be his possible doom.
"Yoink?"I questioned and raised my left eyebrow.
Robin threw some batarangs and I threw a few marble bombs.
"Martian Manhunter."the Android responded and the bombs passed through him.
Amazo had tapped Manhunter's density shifting abilities.
"Access Red Tornado."Amazo said.
The Android threw the boys, who were on the ground in different directions with a small tornado.
"Really?"Kid Flash asked. "You're going to judge me now?"
Kid Flash stood back up, only to come face to face with the android.
"Access Captain Atom."the Android responded.
The Amazo bot shoot a radiation beam at Kid Flash.
Luckily the redheaded speedster slipped away in time and he stopped right below the rafter I were perched on.
"Access Black Canary."It spoke again.
This caused my eyes widened and I quickly threw out my birdarangs.
This mistake, however, was thinking I could stop a sonic wave with small explosives.
The birdarangs exploded and the blast knocked me back.
Kid Flash managed to catch me in the air and place me down.
Superboy came at the Android next, attacking from the side, but Amazo didn't need extra time to recover.
He just went right into it.
"Superman."Amazo said and threw Superboy into the bleachers.
Robin threw his batarangs towards the Android.
"Martian Manhunter."Amazo responded and avoided Robin's attack.
Kid Flash charged towards the Android, only to get caught by it.
"Superman."Amazo said and started crushing Kid Flash in his arms.
Suddenly an arrow was shot towards Amazo causing him to release Kid Flash.
"Martian Manhunter."Amazo decided.
The Android became invisible to avoid being hit by an arrow that was shot towards him.
Who threw that arrow?
"Access Black Canary."Amazo said. "Superman."
Me and the boys had all tried different attacks, but none worked against the Android.
Instead, we all ended up in various states of distress across the gym floor.
"Oh, yawn."Ivo mocked from his seat in the bleachers. "Normally, Amazo would study and mimic your abilities during battle, but what's the point? You're all such poor copies of the originals."
I shot the psycho a dirty look as I pushed myself to my feet once more and Robin placed a hand on my shoulder.
"So everyone keeps saying!"Superboy scowled. "It makes me angry!"
Superboy leaped at Ivo and the professor quickly moved out of the way.
"Want to see me channel that anger?!"Superboy demanded.
"Great."Kid Flash groaned. "He's gone ballistic again."
"Maybe not."I commented with a hint of amusement.
"Amazo, protect your master."Ivo instructed. "Priority alpha."
Ivo jumped out of the bleachers to avoid Superboy's attack again.
"There it is."I sneered.
I looked back at Kid Flash and Robin, who seemed to arrive at the same conclusion.
"Captain Atom."Amazo announced.
The Android sets its aim on Superboy.
"Anyone want to play keep away?"Robin asked in amusement.
Robin kicked Ivo off the bleachers and onto the court.
"I totally do!"I snickered.
I used my whip to grab Ivo and throw him to the right side of the gym.
"Me too!"Kid Flash responded, drawing the android's attention.
"Access Superman."Amazo said before changing once more. "Martian Manhunter-"
That was the Android's mistake.
Superboy jumped before the android could register and thrust his fist into the robot's density shifting head, right as Amazo tried to changed abilities.
"Superman."Amazo said.
For a second, there were sparks of electricity before the head imploded and the android dropped on the floor.
"Help me disassemble him now!"Robin commanded.
Robin rushed towards the fallen android as Superboy recovered from the blast.
I jumped to Robin's side, knowing this was a necessary precaution.
"Dude, the guy has no head."Kid Flash reminded.
At that moment, Aqualad and Miss Martian rushed into the gym.
"Don't take any chances!"Aqualad argued as he ran in.
"Great timing, Aqualad."I replied smugly.
Kid Flash gave me a flirty smile.
"You had it handled, babe."Kid Flash mused.
I frowned and rolled my eyes as Miss Martian checked on Superboy.
"Superboy, are you alright?"Miss Martian questioned.
"I'm fine."Superboy added and then he took a breath. "Feeling the aster."
Both me and Robin looked up at him and smiled at the inside joke that I had shared earlier before turning to each other.
"Hey."Kid Flash called, interrupting the moment and grabbing our attention. "Where's Ivo?"
All of us looked around the gym and saw that Ivo was gone.
Mount Justice
August 4th, 1:06 EDT
"The Amazo android is in pieces again, safely being analyzed at the two separate S.T.A.R. labs, but Ivo escaped and since he originated the tech."Aqualad reported. "He's arguably more dangerous than the android."
"Capturing the Professor will be a League priority."Black Canary assured.
"But we understand your mission encountered other…complications."Martian Manhunter noted suspiciously.
All of our gazes shifted towards Superboy.
"Complications come with the job."Batman stated. "Your ability to handle them has impressed the League."
"The whole League?"Superboy asked.
"Given time, yes."Batman replied. "Kryptonians, as you know, have very hard heads."
I couldn't help but smile in amusement at Batman's tease.
"Of course, there's no shame in asking for help."Batman explained with what looked like a small smile. "That's why the League exists; because there are some problems even, we can't handle individually."
"Please, if we needed help, we'd never get the chance to ask!"Robin scoffed and took out the arrow from yesterday's mission. "Look familiar? You were following us! Babysitting! You still don't trust us!"
I frowned as I stared at the arrow as Green Arrow took out an arrow of his own.
"We didn't follow you."Batman stated plainly.
Green Arrow showed us his arrow, displaying that the two did not match.
"And that's not your arrow, but that means-"Robin started.
"Speedy!"Kid Flash finished excitedly.
Aqualad smiled. "He has our backs."
"Souvenir!"Kid Flash shouted.
Kid Flash speed snatches the arrow away from Green Arrow's hand as me and the rest of the team crowded around him, inspecting the arrow with smiles.
