Chapter 7: The Birthday Girl

Six Years Ago...

Warsaw, Poland

February 15, 11:51 EDT

A six year old girl Emma held Keiko's hand as they walked inside a graveyard.

Emma wore a red winter coat, a light blue top with large yellow flowers on it, a dark blue skirt, long grey socks and black Mary Jane shoes. Her dark chocolate brown hair were tied in small ponytails with a pair of hair bands with fluffy red balls on them.

Keiko Miyasaki appeared to be in her late 20s with the same purple eyes as her daughter and shoulder-length wavy black hair. She wore a fluffy dark brown coat with black gloves with a sky blue chanel suit with white tights and black shoes.

The atmosphere was cold so Keiko had to make sure her daughter was wearing warm clothes that will prevent her from catching a cold.

"Do you still have the flowers, Emma?"Keiko asked.

"Yes, mama."Emma responded and showed a small cute bouquet of pink flowers with her free hand. "I have them right here."

Keiko and Emma walked past a few gravestones until they arrived to one that had a few flower bouquets on it.

15th February 1929 - 6 May 2002

Keiko looked sadly at the gravestone of her grandmother (Her father's mother) before putting the little bouquet on it as tears fell down from her violet coloured eyes.

"Mummy, I miss grandma."Emma admitted.

"I know, sweetheart."Keiko responded with a warm smile. "But she is now watching you from afar. So don't be sad. If you are, it will only make her sad."

Emma nodded and dried her tears away as a little smile grew on her face.

"Okay."Emma answered bravely. "I'll be happy."

Keiko smiled. "Good girl."

The six year old girl takes her mother's hand and they walked out of the graveyard.

Then Emma looked behind and sees a female figure approaching her grandmother's grave, but didn't say anything.

"She must be a friend of grandma."Emma thought simply.

Miyazaki House

August 13, 09:30 EDT

I slept peacefully in my bed as the sunlight shun from the window.

Suddenly my phone started buzzing which caused my eyes to snap open.

I picked up my phone and saw Dick had contacted me through video chat.

"Emma, come on!"Dick's voice rang out. "Time to wake up!"

I groaned and simply ended the call before placing my pink pillow over my head.

My phone started vibrating once again causing an irritated look to appear on my face.

I removed my bed sheet cover to reveal my lavender coloured pyjamas to answer the phone again.

"Richard John Grayson!"I growled with a glare. "What do you want?! I was enjoying my nap!"

"Got a surprise for you, Emi."Dick declared smugly. "Close your eyes and no peeking."

I scowled and closed my eyes as I sat on my knees.

"Now open."Dick instructed.

I opened my eyes and saw the figurine in Dick's hands.

It was a small usaburo kokeshi kimono maiden doll that had chestnut brown hair styled in twin buns and clad a navy blue kimono paired with a bright red obi adorned with plum blossoms.

"Oh my gosh! My Kokeshi Doll!"I said in amazement. "I thought I lost it two years ago!"

"Nah, I kept it safe after you accidentally left it in the bathtub that day."Dick admitted in amusement.

I frowned and blushed in embarrassment.

"Thanks for the reminder, Dicky."I mumbled darkly.

"Emi."Dick said.

"Yeah?"I asked with a frown.

"Happy Birthday."Dick replied with a smile.

The expression on my face vanished as my eyes widen at Dick's sudden respond.

I completely forgot it was my birthday today.

Remembering my mum, stepfather, Corinne, Bruce, Alfred and Dick's birthdays were easy.

But mine? I usually forget.

I couldn't believe it.

I was finally thirteen years old.

A teenager.

"Get yourself ready, birthday girl!"Dick insisted and winked at me. "You got a big day ahead of you!"

I rolled my eyes as he ended the call before I placed my phone at the top of my drawer and went up to my closet.

I placed on a pink pinafore with a white shirt underneath and tied a green bow at the back of my head. The shoes I placed on were short black boots.

After getting dressed, I went down in the dining room to join my step-father Hayato Ueno and Corinne.

Hayato wore a silver-grey business suit with short caramel blonde hair and dark pastel blue eyes.

Corinne was my cute six year old half-sister with long caramel blonde wavy twin-tails with straight-cut bangs, purple eyes and wore a cyan blue dress with white tights and matching shoes.

She had her father's hair colour and our mum's eyes just like me except they were a bit darker.

Mum was making her famous yummy pancakes in the kitchen, Hayato was reading the morning newspaper as Corinne stuffed her face with pancakes and cream.

"Good morning, Emma."Mum greeted. "Happy birthday."

"Thanks, mum."I thanked as I sat down next to Dick. "I honestly forgot about today."

Mum gave a kiss on the forehead before placing a plate of pancakes in front of me.

Then Hayato ruffled my hair a bit while Corinne gave me a big hug.

"Happy birthday, Emma."Hayato chuckled.

"Happy birthday, big sister!"Corinne giggled.

I smiled at Hayato and Corinne before I started decorating my tower of pancakes with a sprinkles, whipped cream and cherries before I began stuffing my face with a fork.

I really loved enjoyed eating pancakes on my birthday because it's the day I can eat them with a bit more sweetness.

"I have an important meeting today with Lucius Fox about CEO chemical reports."Hayato declared as he took from his cup of coffee. "But I'll come back before dinner."

"Great."I commented as I licked away the cream on my upper lip a little bit. "Do you want to come with me, Corinne?"

"Nah, it's okay."Corinne remarked and smirked a bit. "I am going shopping with mum. You can go with your boyfriend."

My cheeks became pink at my little sister's respond.

Dick was my friend.

Not my boyfriend.

"Mind your manners, Corinne."Mum instructed.

"Yes, mum."Corinne answered with a small grin.

Hayato cleared his throat, earning my attention.

"In the mean time, you and your friend can treat yourselves in the carnival fair."Hayato declared with a small frown.

Hayato took out two tickets to the carnival fair causing my eyes to sparkle.

I love going to the Carnival!

Gotham City

August 13, 10:35 EDT

After eating breakfast, Alfred drove me and Dick to the Carnival Fair.

The minute Alfred set his car to park in front of Mayfield's, me and Dick headed to the funfair to have the time of our lives.

I looked at the cool rides and games around us as I notice everyone greeting, talking and laughing with one another.

I looked at Dick.

"Are you in the mood for laser tag?"I asked.

"Seriously, Emi?"Dick questioned with a smirk. "Your asking me when it's your birthday?"

"Yes or no?"I questioned.

"Relax, it's yes."Dick chuckled. "I love playing anything with you."

I smiled and took his hand.

"Let's go then!"I insisted.

The two of us went inside the Laser Tag and it was so fun!

Me and Dick had to zigzag our way through a darkened maze that spans three levels while shooting at the other players to prevent ourselves from becoming out.

After playing Laser Tag, we went to the bumper cars, Tilt-A-Whirl and the scary rollercoaster ride that ended up making me a little dizzy.

As I sat on my bench, Dick excused himself as he walked to the cotton candy machine and purchased a large cone of blue and purple sugary fluff for us to eat together.

Man, my birthday is going great so far.

But I was deep down getting curious of what surprise Bruce had in store for me.

When it was getting dark, the lights on the rides and games turned on making everything look more magnificent.

To end the day in the carnival, me and Dick decided to go on the Ferris Wheel as our final ride.

"The view up here is very beautiful."I complemented.

"I couldn't agree more."Dick replied with a nod.

I blushed a little as I began to rest my head on Dick's shoulder.

"Whoa! Don't sleep, Emma."Dick chuckled. "It's not bed time yet."

"I know, Dick."I assured. "I just wanna relax a little bit."

"Right."Dick responded and placed his hand around my shoulder. "Your the birthday girl."

Wayne Manor

August 13, 16:30 EDT

Me and Dick returned to Wayne Manor after the Ferris Wheel ride ended.

However when we went inside, I was completely surprised to find the lights in the manor turned off.

Weird.

Since when did Bruce wanted the manor to be in darkness?

"Close your eyes, Emma."Dick responded.

"Again?"I responded with a frown.

"Just do it."Dick insisted with a smirk.

I closed my eyes and Dick started leading me to a room.

"Can I open them now?"I asked.

"Not yet."Dick answered in a quiet sing song tone.

I kept my eyes closed as Dick lead me into a room and let go of my hands.

"Dick?"I asked. "Hello? What's going-"

The lights suddenly opened and the dining room brightened.

"SURPRISE!"

I opened my eyes to see my parents, Corinne, Dick, Bruce and Alfred in the room along with my school friends; Barbara, Yousuke and Bette.

"Happy Birthday, Emma!"Barbara, Yaten and Bette said in unison.

I smiled seeing my friends from Gotham Academy before Bruce walked up to me and placed a hand on my shoulder.

"What do you think of this surprise, Emma?"Bruce asked.

"It's awesome, Bruce."I remarked with a grateful smile. "Totally awesome."

I gasped at the pile of presents and rushed over to start unwrapping them.

Mum's present was a new skateboard, my step-dad's present was a dark purple hoodie and Corinne's present was a couple of coluorful lucite rings.

Dad got me a new smartphone, Dick's present was a silver necklace with a nightingale pendant along with my old kokeshi doll and from Alfred was my own journal to write on.

I then opened up the presents I got from Barbara, Yousuke and Bette which were a sky blue coloured headphone, a golden feng shui cat and a digital camera.

"No way!"I said in awe. "All of these presents are for me?"

"Of course, they are."Bette commented.

"Didn't want to give you something cheap since your now old to play with dolls."Yousuke joked.

I gave the silver haired boy a smirk at his complement.

Yes, I was now old to play with dolls.

But there was no way, I'll ever sell my kokeshi doll.

It was a special doll from my hometown Japan that Bruce gave me after I turned seven.

"And now for the main event."Dick declared.

I snapped out of my thoughts when Dick grabbed my hand and pulled me over to the table where a huge decorated pink velvet cake was in the center, surrounded by plates, silverware and cups for all of us.

"Make a wish, Emma."Barbara encouraged.

"Already on it, Babs."I replied brightly.

I blew off the flames on the candles and everyone clapped at me before Alfred started handing out the yummy cake slices to me and everyone else.

After a few hours of fun passed, Dick and I helped Alfred clear up after my birthday party ended before leaving with my family and school friends.

It was so good to finally be thirteen...and I bet my Grandma Annika would've been happy for me as well if she was still around.

My grandmother was the only relative I had known from my father's side.

My birth father's side.

But now that I think about it my mum had never told me about him or what happened between them.

Maybe someday I'll find out about my dad and meet him in person.

If he's still alive.

In the next chapter, Blue Jay and Robin will be on a mission with Batman and be back with the Team:)
