Chapter 8: Clayface

Cape Canaveral

August 19, 20:48 EDT

Blue Jay's POV

Batman, Robin and I fought our way through soldiers of the League of Shadows that were trying to prevent us from getting to the rocket on the launch pad.

"I need to get that rocket!"Batman stated.

"Roger that!"Robin replied as he leapt up and kicked away two soldiers. "We'll run the interference!"

"Happy hunting!"I sneered before punching a goon hard on the face.

Robin and I kept the soldiers occupied while Batman made his way to the rocket.

"You will not interfere with the Master's desires!"Ubu growled.

Batman dodged Ubu's fists from hitting him and then kicked him on the stomach.

"The Master must learn to live with disappointment."Batman replied.

However, with his superior strength, Ubu managed to pin down Batman against a tanker truck.

I hit a few soldiers with my whip as Robin fought off the other three before he contacted Batman in his comlink.

"Hold on, Batman!"Robin responded. "Me and Jay got your back!"

Robin goes beneath the truck to whirl a fuel hose around Ubu's ankle while I went inside the vehicle to jam the gas pedal.

"Now Batman!"Robin and I yelled out together.

I jumped out of the truck as Batman kicked Ubu on the face and the bodyguard got pulled away.

Robin smirked. "I love our job."

"I know."I chuckled with a playful smirk.

Batman made his way to the foot of the rocket, where Talia was waiting for him.

Talia fired a shot, which nearly hit Batman's shoulder.

"That was simply to prove I'm serious."Talia warned.

"Hello, Talia."Batman responded.

Robin and I finished beating up the goons when we notice Talia pointing her gun at Batman.

"Uh oh."Robin mumbled.

I contacted the Batcave, where Alfred was monitoring us via a camera in Batman's cowl.

"Blue Jay to Batcave."I said with a frown. "Are you seeing this?"

"Unfortunately, yes."Alfred answered. "I have a front row seat."

Robin checked his computer wrist for how much time was left until the rocket would launch into the sky.

"5 minutes and 49 seconds left."Robin declared. "Come on, Jay. We gotta do our part."

I nodded at Robin as we headed to the next phase to stop the rocket as Batman made his way to the rocket's nosecone and discovered its new payload was a diamond lens.

I guess it seems Talia decided to let him go.

"A diamond lens, sir?"Alfred asked.

"Yes."Batman agreed. "Destroying it won't be easy."

As Batman tried to figure out how to destroy it, a figure arrived.

"Neither easy nor necessary, detective."the man declared.

"Ra's Al Ghul."Batman responded.

Ra's Al Ghul...the Demon's Head and Immortal Leader of the League of Shadows.

His also the only of our enemies that know the secret identities of Batman, Robin...and mine.

Robin and I fired our grappling hook guns to head to the top as Batman kept Ra's busy.

"Such contempt."Ra's said. "And yet I always admired you...believed you the only man worthy of my legacy. Why are our encounters always so adversarial?"

"Something to do with your disdain for human life."Batman complemented.

"Granted. The human race is destroying this planet. You tolerate it. I cannot."Ra's explained. "But I believe I've finally arrived at an equitable compromise."

Ra's began explaining his plan to Batman on using the diamond lens, he could focus the sun's rays into a beam that could destroy cities.

The human surplus would be destroyed, while nature and rural areas would remain.

I would admit it's an impressive plan, if I wasn't so creeped out.

"I'll even spare Gotham...since you've developed such an unhealthy attachment to the place."Ra's declared. "All this is possible, detective. If only you'd join me."

"Pass."Batman replied.

Batman's respond it's not a surprise since it was the same answer that he gave Ra's during the 'incident' that included Robin and I kidnapped to the Himalayas.

Just to be a clear that little incident was a test for Batman by Ra's to see if he was a suitable heir to his dominion and the right mate for his daughter.

Including witness Ra's go insane after being placed into the Lazarus Pit...Eesh.

"There's just no pleasing you. This remote will launch the rocket now."Ra's stated as he placed out a remote. "You see, detective, I've failed in the past by underestimating you. Not this time."

Ra's triggered the rocket with a remote detonation, but nothing happened.

"This time...I'm not the one you underestimated."Batman replied with a smirk.

Batman moved out of the way a bit to reveal me and Robin on top of the rocket while grinning at the Demon's Head.

While Batman and Ra's spoke, Robin and I had secretly snuck up to remove the diamond lens from the rocket.

"Hi."I greeted with a wave.

"Gotcher nose...cone lens."Robin sneered while holding the diamond lens.

"No!"Ra's scowled.

I sighed and looked at Robin.

"Why do the bad guys always say no?"I questioned. "They see us standing here with the thing and still they say no."

Robin shrugged in respond before looking at Ra's.

"You're in denial, Ra's."Robin commented. "Ever thought of trying re-nial instead?"

"NO!"Ra's shouted angrily.

Robin dropped the diamond lens and Ra's let out a scream before jumping after it.

"Wait!"Robin protested. "I didn't mean for-"

Thud!

The Demon's Head fell from the launch pad and landed near where Talia stood.

I winced at Ra's unmoving body as I looked down with Batman and Robin.

"She'll hate me for that."Batman stated.

"You? But I'm the one that..."Robin started.

"This is hardly your fault, Master Dick."Alfred replied. "And in any case, Miss Al Ghul's father's deaths tend to the temporary."

"None of which will matter to Talia."Batman responded.

I raised an eyebrow at my mentor.

"Which bothers of you because?"I asked curiously.

Batman didn't respond as the three of us watched Ubu pick up Ra's' body before he and Talia left the facility in a helicopter.

As the sun was setting, Alfred contacted us in our comlinks.

"Master Bruce, Master Dick and Miss Emma."Alfred spoke up. "I have an emergency alert from Red Tornado. A member of the Family has passed."

I froze a little at the news.

It seemed that while Batman, Robin and I were facing Ra's, the Team received their own mission.

Salem

August 21, 16:07 EDT

Me and Robin stood next to each other as Red Tornado spoke a eulogy at the grave of Kent Nelson.

The entire Team, as well as members of the Justice League and Justice Society of America were there as well.

"Kent Nelson did not require a magic helmet to me a hero."Red Tornado stated. "Kent dedicated his life. Gave his life to safeguard this world from evil. May he finally find rest with his beloved, Inza."

All of us closed our eyes and bowed our heads at the passing of the former protector of the Helmet of Fate.

Gotham City

August 26, 08:15 EDT

I quietly swallowed the small caramel cube in my mouth as I walked into the Wayne Foundation office with Bruce and Dick.

Lucius Fox called Bruce over to the office because they received a mysterious canister.

Bruce shook hands with Lucius before the business manager notice Dick and me.

"Richard and Emma."Lucius responded with a smile. "It's been a while since I last saw you two."

"Hello, Lucius."Dick and I answered in unison.

"So what's this about, Lucius?"Bruce asked.

"Not sure, Bruce."Lucius answered. "This arrived addressed to you. No return address."

"Has it been scan?"Bruce questioned.

"Post 9/11? Of course. But it appears to be...mud."Lucius stated.

I blinked.

Mud?

Dick looked at me.

"Are you finding this weird?"Dick asked.

"Yep."I responded.

Suddenly a crack was heard and something burst out of the canister.

It was a mud monster emerged and it let out an angry roar.

Me and Dick immediately started running and went to different rooms to change as the employees ran off in terror.

After I changed into Blue Jay, I joined Batman and Robin to start fighting the strange creature.

The monster dispatched the guards and was about to attack Lucius, but the three of us prevented it from doing so.

The mud creature grabbed Robin and me with his mud-like hands before throwing us out of the building.

"Whaaatt?"the creature growled. "Whaat diiid sheeee dooo tooo meeee?"

I groaned as I rubbed my head, just in time to see Batman activate his taser and it shot pulses of electric waves at the creature, making it let out a cry of pain.

However the mud monster immediately recovered and roared even more.

"Really thought he'd be a little less shivered after that."Robin commented.

The creature's fists burst out from his back and we quickly jumped out of the way.

However some mud shot out from its back and slammed the three of us against the wall.

"Howwww?"the creature groaned as it a slowly disappeared into the sewer. "Howwww diiiid thiiisssss haaappennnn?"

The muddy creature escaped through a sewer lid as me, Batman and Robin carefully walked forward.

"Counters out every move and even withstands being tased."I retorted as I looked at the mud in my clothes. "This thing is dangerous beside being disgusting."

Batman picked up a bit of mud to analyse back in the Bat Cave before putting it away.

The three of us headed inside the Batmobile to get back home as Batman contacted the Team.

"Attention, Team."Batman ordered. "Take a Zeta-Tube to Gotham City immediately and rendezvous with Robin and Blue Jay at these coordinates as soon as possible."

"What is the mission?"Aqualad asked.

"Shouldn't we wait for Artemis?"Kid Flash suggested.

"No waiting."Batman responded. "There's a creature loose in my city."

"If it's your city, why are we hunting it?"Superboy questioned with his arms folded.

"You are not to hunt or engage it."Batman instructed firmly. "Track it until I return with the solution."

Batman ended the call and the small screen of the Team vanished.

"Both of you take a shower before joining the Team."Batman ordered.

"Yes, sir."Robin and I said in unison.

Gotham City

August 27, 04:49 EDT

Aqualad, Miss Martian, Robin, me, Kid Flash and Superboy walked in the sewers as we searched for the mud monster.

However, the mud monster emerged from the dirty water and ended up attacking the six of us at the same time.

We all released our attacks at the creature and all of its parts splattered onto us.

"That was unpleasant."Miss Martian said. "Like tangling with a rabid ma'alefa'ak on Mars."

"Unpleasant, sure...but kinda easy. That thing was a pushover."Kid Flash remarked. "What the heck was Batman worried about?"

I rolled my eyes at Wally's respond as Superboy looked at Robin.

"What's a malafak?"Superboy asked.

Just as Robin opened his mouth to say something, I let out a scream as the clay monster emerged again and grabbed me with one of its muddy hands.

"Jay!"Robin shouted out.

I screamed as the monster knocked me back and I was thrown into the sewer water.

Gross!

Now I will need to double my time in the showers after I go back home.

My eyes slowly opened and stood up a bit as I saw the monster walk away from us.

"Batman to Team."Batman's voice spoke up. "Report status. Have you encountered the creature?"

"Yes, Batman."Aqualad answered. "Though the encounter was far from successful."

"Tell me everything that occurred."Batman ordered. "I want details."

Robin helped me up as Kid Flash wiped away the mud on his suit.

"If that's Batman, ask him where Aretmis is?"Kid Flash questioned sarcastically. "And how come she gets away with skipping this so fun sewer party?"

Batman sent us the coordinates before the six of us left the sewers and returned to the Bio-Ship.

Me, Robin and Kid Flash took turns into change into our spare clothes.

"Man, I need a shower."Kid Flash complained. "I mean what's the point of putting on a clean costume when I'm not fresh?"

I sat on a seat as I took out my mini laptop to type to search for something on its small screen.

"Oh Wally, you're always fresh."Miss Martian said.

"At least you have a clean costume."Superboy complemented as he stared at his dirty clothes.

"Yeah, an old back up!"Kid Flash complained. "No stealth mode! It stinks!"

"Actually, I think the stink is you, Freshness."Robin responded smugly as he sat on a seat. "But what about the creature?"

"His in a abandoned warehouse."I admitted as my laptop did a little beep before the screen showed the creature's location. "I placed a tracker on him before it escaped."

"Once we track him, we should split up."Robin suggested. "Whoever finds Clayface radios in the rest of the Team."

"And then we converge and kick some clay butt."Superboy agreed.

"What do you think, Aqualad?"Miss Martian asked.

We all turned around to see what our leader thought about our plan.

"What?"Aqualad responded and snapped out of his thoughts. "Oh, yes..."

Miss Martian landed the Bio-Ship at the clay creature's location which was an abandoned warehouse and we all jumped out.

The six of us split up as part of the plan to look for the shapeshifter.

I went inside the building through one of the windows and carefully looked at my surroundings before noticing the ground covered in mud.

"Blue Jay!"

I turned around and saw Robin running towards me.

"Robin."I said.

"Any sign of Clayface?"Robin asked.

"Nope."I responded. "Did you hear from the others?"

"No. Sorry."Robin answered with a shrug. "Maybe his not here."

"He must be here."I insisted and turned around to look at the trail of mud behind me. "Maybe we should-"

Suddenly something hard slapped me from behind my back and I landed on a pile of crates.

My body hit the ground as a few crates dropped on me.

I glared at 'Robin' shape shifted into Clayface before I closed my eyes and fall into unconsciousness.

Mount Justice

August 27, 07:58 EDT

Batman faced me and the rest of the Team as we walked through the Zeta Tube and into the Mountain.

"I need to talk to Aqualad."Batman declared. "The rest of you hit the showers and head home."

"Head home?"Superboy asked as he raised his arms and an annoyed look appeared on his face. "I am home."

Superboy, Miss Martian and Kid Flash headed off to the shower while Robin, Aqualad and I stayed behind, waiting for Batman to talk.

"Just Aqualad."Batman replied darkly, looking at Robin and me.

Robin and I exchanged looks before we walked past Batman to head to the shower rooms.

I took off my clothes once I was in the shower room and started washing myself from head to toe.

A small groan escaped my mouth as I felt the hot water pour all over me.

After I finished showering, Robin and I headed back to Wayne Manor.

But the moment that I arrived inside my other room, I placed on a dark red t-shirt and grey leggings before collapsing on my bed to catch some Z's.

I was too tired to have breakfast since I didn't get any sleep today.

Wayne Manor

August 27, 20:00 EDT

I read a book about samurai and ninjas in the library of Wayne Manor as I took a sip of my lemon tea soda.

"So Samurai were noble warriors and keepers of the peace in ancient Japan."I read and looked at the next page. "Ninja were trained in dark arts of deception and used their talents as spies and assassins. That's interesting."

After I finished reading my book, I headed out of the room holding a towel before carefully opening the door of the Gym to check on Dick.

Dick was up on the ring set going through two full rotations before releasing at the top, completing a full flip and grabbing the rings again, finally coming to a stop in a perfectly vertical handstand, gritting his teeth and descending slowly until he's parallel to the floor, then all the way down into a cross.

"Just Aqualad."Dick muttered as sweat fall down his face.

Dick pushed up a little higher, bringing his pointed toes to be parallel to his hips, then moving slowly through to another handstand, his eyes on something on the floor away from the mat rather than on his hands.

Pulling through a full rotation, Dick released his hands from the ring set to land himself down.

However, he lost his balance and did a fast paced walk over before slamming his back into the wall with a bang.

Dick angrily made his left hand hit the wall in a solid punch, giving it a small crack.

I bit my lip as I realised he was probably not happy that Dad decided to talk to Kaldur instead of us.

I walked up to Dick and handed him a small towel.

"Thanks, Emi."Dick thanked and wiped the sweat of his face with the towel.

"No problem."I said with a small smile.

Then the door of the gym opened and Alfred appeared.

"Master Bruce wishes to see you, Master Dick."Alfred stated.

We followed Alfred out into the back and just as the door opened, a basketball came flying towards Dick.

Dick caught the basketball and saw Bruce wearing a white shirt with dark blue sweatpants.

"What's this?"Dick questioned.

"Training."Bruce answered with a smile. "Hand eye coordination."

"One on one?"Dick asked.

Bruce smirked. "If you think you can handle it."

I smiled warmly as I stood next to Alfred watching Dick laugh while playing basketball with Bruce.

This should definitely lower his anger on Batman choosing to talk to Aqualad.
