Chapter 11: Home Front

Gotham Academy

September 22, 09:30 EDT

Emma's POV

Me and Dick were listening to Barbara until we notice Artemis talking to Bette, who happened to be the Student Liaison of Gotham Academy.

I looked at Dick causing him to smirk in respond.

"Excuse us, Babs."I responded.

Dick pulled out his smartphone as me and him went on both sides of Artemis.

I simply smiled while Dick placed his arm around Artemis's shoulder.

"We'll laugh about this someday."Dick stated.

Dick took the picture causing Artemis to since at the flash before he and I went back to Barbara.

"Who were they?"Artemis asked.

"Dick Grayson and Emma Miyazaki."Bette replied. "They are both in your English Class."

"Dick? Emma?"Barbara said as we walked back to her. "What was that about?"

"Nothing, Barbara."Dick answered. "We're just being friendly to the new girl."

"You only get one chance to make a first impression."I chuckled.

Barbara rolled her eyes and began to walk away.

Dick and I exchanged looks and then we looked at the picture.

The two of us were smiling at the camera while Artemis just looked confused.

We definitely won't forget this moment.

Gotham City

September 22, 20:35 EDT

Blue Jay's POV

Robin and I landed on the rooftop silently as we caught sight of someone else entering the alley.

"Artemis?"Robin asked with a mischievous expression.

"Robin! Blue Jay!"Artemis said with a startled look. "I...uh..."

"How random."Robin continued. "That you're in Gotham City! Instead of Star City, where your uncle Green Arrow lives."

"I'm-uh-here to see my cousin!"Artemis answered quickly. "She was in the state spelling bee! Here...in Gotham...City!"

"C-O-O-L."Robin spelled out. "Did she W-I-N?"

"N-O."Artemis responded.

"D-R-A-G."Robin sneered as his mask lenses quirked.

I rolled my eyes as I cut into the conversation.

"Are you two D-O-N-E?"I questioned.

Artemis blinked for a second before gesturing to the phone booth.

"Yeah."Artemis agreed, jerking a thumb towards the door. "Let's just go to the cave."

"Ladies first."Robin insisted.

Robin bowed at his waist, swinging an arm out in some sort of grand gesture.

I rolled my eyes as Artemis gave him a frown.

"Your town."Artemis retorted, putting her hands on her hips. "You guys go."

Robin shrugged before he and I stepped inside the phone booth, shutting the door behind us.

"Recognized: Robin: B-01."the computer's voice announced. "Blue Jay: B-00."

The moment Robin and I arrived in the Cave, we ducked down as a fireball came hurling straight toward us.

What the heck?!

"Recognised: Artemis: B:08."the computer stated.

"Get down!"I yelled out.

Robin grabbed my wrist and pulled me away from a fireball that was hurling towards us.

The two of us rushed over to Artemis as smoke surrounded us.

Artemis began shooting her arrows while me and Robin began throwing our birdarangs to where the fireballs were coming from.

Whenever the birdarangs would hit something, I could a sort of metallic sounding 'clank', which made me suspicious.

"Who are we fighting?!"Artemis demanded.

"Dunno."Robin answered he landed next to me. "But we're sitting ducks by these tubes! Head for the exit!"

The three of us made a break for it, ducking under a stream of fire that flew their way.

But just as we entered the adjoining corridor, a wave of water cut off our escape route.

"Or not."I muttered bitterly.

Me, Robin and Artemis started to run again as the wave caught and threw us against the opposite wall.

We didn't waste any time as we began to run again, dodging another fireball and spinning around to see that the flaming balls of misery were coming from a higher ledge.

Now that I think about it.

It seems the Team's supposedly 'secret headquarters' had quite literally, just been compromised.

Me, Robin and Artemis went into Mount Justice's training room to escape the fireballs that were going to hit us.

"Robin to Team!"Robin shouted as he pressed his comlink. "Aqualad, can you hear me?!"

"Kid Flash! Superboy!"I shouted in my comlink. "Come in!"

The door to the training room blew open causing me, Robin and Artemis were all thrown forward.

I quickly stood up as I followed Artemis and Robin out of the room.

"Robin!"I responded as we rushed to the showers. "Try the Batcave!"

Me, Robin and Artemis began to activate the faucets as the fire tornado continued following us.

"Robin to Batcave!"Robin shouted. "Override RG-04! Cave calling Justice League! HOJ/Watchtower! B-Zero-One! Priority Red!"

I glanced at Robin as I felt an uncomfortable tickle go down my spine.

"Don't you feel like we're forgetting something?"I asked.

"Maybe."Robin replied. "At least the water's helping."

Suddenly we heard the pipes within the walls of the showers began to creak and groan as the small tiles started to fall off as every faucet and showerhead sprayed water everywhere.

"Or not."Robin muttered.

I quickly held my breath as the water quickly overtook us and watched as Robin placed an exploding birdarang onto the wall.

For a moment, the dots on the birdarang blinked before the wall exploded outward and washed the three of us into the hallway.

After coughing a bit, I got up and made a dash for the kitchen with Robin and Artemis on my heels.

"We need to get lost."Robin suggested.

"The Air Vent!"Artemis answered.

"Good!"Robin responded. "Go!"

Artemis and I went to pull off the entrance of the vent as Robin turned to the security system on the door.

"What is he–?"Artemis started.

"Downloading the Cave's blueprints."I responded.

"It could come in…"Robin started and looked at us. "Go! Go!"

Artemis and I quickly jumped up the ventilation shaft with Robin right behind us.

"Go left!"Robin ordered.

Me, Artemis and Robin headed to the left as a fire blast passed to the other side.

"Ugh. Too close."Robin groaned and checked his holographic computer. "Take the first right. There should be a vent cover right in front of you."

Artemis pulled it open and the three of us slid down and into the temperature control room.

"This way."Robin instructed.

Robin, me and Artemis began running down the nearby stairwell before an explosion caught our attention.

It was a feminine figure engulfed in a cloud of fire and began rising the flames higher in the room.

I jumped off the railing with Robin and Artemis doing the same.

We notice the bar on one of the generators had a red meter that was quickly overtaking the green and started to crack causing me to pale.

"Man that's not good."I retorted.

Me, Robin and Artemis began running again, steam coming out of nearby pipes as the pressure exceeded the parameters.

As we did so, the pyrokinetic threw more fireballs at us, but we were able to duck behind a nearby boiler for protection.

Artemis found the access tunnel causing Robin and I to jump into it before his birdarang exploded.

"Hold on."Robin instructed.

I wiped away the sweat in my forehead as Robin scuttled over to a nearby control box, where he used a batarang to knock the covering off.

Robin plugged his holo-glove into one of the ports before making his fingers type across his holographic computer.

"Locking down the cave's motion and heat sensors to prevent the enemy from tracking us."Robin explained.

"And I ask again."Artemis said. "Who is the enemy?"

"Let's find out."I suggested as I took out my mini laptop. "Lucky I keep this on me."

I pulled out my own USB cable to plug it in and tap into the security cameras while Robin continued locking out the sensors.

My mini laptop downloaded the video and saw our companions hanging in the hanger.

We saw Aqualad coming over to Superboy, Miss Martian and Kid Flash and subtly question them about their loyalties.

As they discuss Artemis, they were suddenly ambushed.

"What happened?"Artemis asked.

"The explosion took out the camera."I answered with a frown. "I'll find another angle."

I typed a few keyboards in my mini laptop to show the other camera screens.

However every camera feed turned to static, signifying that our Team, no matter their powers or skills, had been beaten.

"That's it."Robin muttered. "All four are dead."

I nodded before me and Robin notice Artemis looking at us with a shocked expression.

"The cameras."Robin corrected quickly. "I meant the cameras."

"I'm sure the others are okay."I commented as I typed on my mini laptop. "Just give me a sec to find out the fastest route to the hangar."

"Yeah."Artemis said sarcastically. "They're fine. They've all got superpowers. They can handle anything."

We quickly moved through the vent to head to the library.

"There should be a secret passage behind one of these bookcases."Robin suggested.

"Seriously?"Artemis scoffed, sounding incredulous. "Cliche, much?"

"You should see the Batcave."I insisted.

Suddenly the door of the library opened causing the three of us to hide behind a bookshelf.

I held my whip as I heard clanking footsteps heading our way.

"Artemis, Robin, Blue Jay."Red Tornado's voice rang out.

"It's Red Tornado!"Artemis said happily.

Artemis jumping out of the shelves before me or Robin could stop her.

Robin and I tackled Artemis down underneath a table before she was attacked.

"Yes on the Red!"Robin shouted.

"No on the Tornado!"I scowled.

Just as we were about to exit the library, the female android that controlled fire, rounded the corner and flames exploded throughout the library which led to the sprinklers to activate.

I followed Robin on top of the bookshelves as Artemis shot an arrow at the female android, who easily destroyed it.

"Who-What are they?"Artemis demanded.

Robin pulled on the spine of 'The Mysteries of Udolpho causing the secret passage to open and we all jumped in before the bookshelves crushed us.

"Did you two know Tornado had siblings?!"Artemis asked.

"No!"Robin and I shouted in unison.

Robin and I made to turn around the corner, but Artemis grabbed our hands to stop us.

"So now what?!"Artemis demanded. "Red Tornado is one of the League's power houses! How are we supposed to take down two of him?!"

"Well, they do seem pretty user-unfriendly."Robin commented.

I covered my mouth to laugh quietly as unamused look grew on Artemis' face.

"Don't joke!"Artemis snapped.

Artemis was suddenly cut off by Red Tornado's voice.

"Attention Robin. Attention Blue Jay. Attention Artemis."Red Tornado's voice rang out. "You have exactly ten minutes to surrender or the lives of your teammates will be extinguished."

A moment of silence passed as me, Robin and Artemis looked at each other.

"Nine minutes and 45 seconds."

The three of us started running to get to our friends location.

"Eight minutes."

"We can access the hangar from here."Robin insisted.

Suddenly a roaring sound signified the arrival of a massive tidal wave.

"Or not."I muttered.

"Would you two please stop doing that?"Artemis begged in annoyance.

The three of us started to make a run for it as the wave slammed into our backs and threw us forward.

Robin's cape nearly hit my face as I followed after my friends to the other side.

I let out a gurgling scream as I suddenly felt my throat get caught by the Android that had Red Tornado's voice.

But then Robin took one of Artemis' arrows and jabbed it dead center into the android's eye, finally prompting the man-like robot to let go of my throat.

As soon as me, Robin and Artemis surfaced within the flooded hangar, the three of us had to dive down to avoid being hit by a coming fireball.

Once we resurfaced, I saw two things that caught my attention.

Miss Martian and Aqualad were currently trapped inside a cage made of fire while Kid Flash and Superboy seemed to be stuck in some sort of crudely shaped metal.

"You guys okay?"Robin asked.

"Forget us!"Superboy shouted. "Help M'gann!"

"Aqualad!"Artemis called out. "Is she-"

"She is unconscious."Aqualad replied slowly. "I fear she-we cannot survive that much longer."

The female-like android appeared again causing Robin, me and Artemis to dive down beneath the waterline.

The three of us swam quickly to head to the stair line just as the androids cornered us.

"I'm almost out of arrows."Artemis warned.

"Distract her, we'll handle the other one!"Robin ordered.

Robin and I threw our birdarangs at the other Android, but his body easily deflected them.

The three of us jumped out of the way and dived down as the two Androids' attacks headed towards us.

We headed deep under the Cave and Robin spotted a shaft.

Robin pulled open the cover of the entrance as Artemis and I swam inside it.

I gasped for breath as I emerged from the water and hoisted myself out and into the small tunnel.

"Six minutes."

"What do we do now?!"Artemis demanded.

"We save them."Robin answered.

"That's how it works."I said as I rubbed my throat.

"Maybe that's how it's supposed to work, but those robots already took out our four super powered friends!"Artemis argued with a glare.

"You seem distraught."Robin sneered.

"Distraught?"Artemis retorted. "M'gann is dying! The three of us have no powers and I'm down to my last arrow! Of course, I'm distraught!"

"Well get traught or get dead!"Robin snapped.

I placed my hand onto Robin's and he turned to me.

Robin and I slowly began to make our way through the vent as Artemis followed us from behind.

"How can you two be so calm?"Artemis asked.

"Practice."Robin responded. "I've been doing this since I was nine."

"And you?"Artemis asked.

"Since I was five years old."I answered with a hint of amusement.

"What good is that now?"Artemis questioned. "What chance do we have against unrelenting machines?"

I froze where I stood as I felt Artemis bump into me.

"What?"Artemis asked.

"Of course!"I responded and face palmed. "They're machines!"

"And one electromagnetic pulse will shut down any machine within range!"Robin added with a smirk.

"Great!"Artemis replied. "Except one of you two better have an EMP emitter in your utility belts! Because I know I don't have one in my quiver!"

"I bet we can make one,"Robin sneered and pressed on his comlink. "What do you say, KF? Do-able?"

"Totally do-able!"Kid Flash's voice responded.

I blinked when I remembered one of the birdarangs must've hit near Kid Flash's head.

"Five minutes."

"You know if you have more time."Kid Flash warned nervously.

"Chill out, KF."I instructed simply. "Just focus on working with our brains."

"Whatever you say, pretty bird."Kid Flash flirted in a smug tone.

I made my eye twitch at the name KF just called me.

I was so punching him in the gut for that.

"Med Lab."Kid Flash said. "X-Ray machine. Find a small vacuum tube called a vircator that converts high-energy pulses."

Me, Robin and Artemis headed inside the Med Lab to find the X-Ray machine as Kid Flash instructed us.

"Reprogram the unit's microwave conversion from x-rays to EMPs...with a cascading energy vector directed outward."Kid Flash declared.

"A ripple effect."Robin said as he took out the vircator. "Like dropping a stone in a pond."

"A stone with 10 to the 12th power wattage."Kid Flash added.

"So you'll need to hook it up to the generator."I exclaimed as I checked on my mini laptop.

"Which is where?"Artemis asked.

"The Hangar."I responded.

"Four minutes."

The three of us headed back in the vents and found ourselves back in the hangar.

"Okay, make with the distraction."Robin ordered in his comlink.

"Hey, Red Tomato, who's your girlfriend?"Kid Flash called out. "Red Onion?

"Yeah, and by the way, worst death trap ever!"Superboy admitted. "We can escape any time we want!"

"I can vibrate my molecules out of here before your binary brains could count to two!"Kid Flash added.

Me, Robin and Artemis carefully scurried quickly to the other side of the corridor as Kid Flash and Superboy distracted the Androids.

"Cover us."Robin ordered quietly.

Robin and I swung ourselves down to the generator while Artemis got ready to shoot her last arrow.

Robin placed the vircator inside as I connected my mini laptop to it to reroute the system.

"And you can't drown a Kryptonian, dumb-bots!"Superboy declared. "We don't breathe air!"

"And Miss Martian?"Kid Flash laughed. "I can't believe you're buying her act!"

"Yeah."Superboy agreed. "Do you know how hot it gets in the caves of Mars?"

"It's not working."I retorted with a frown.

"The circuit's incomplete."Robin responded. "You need something conductible, a piece of metal..."

"Robin! Blue Jay!"Artemis yelled out. "Look out!"

I froze in shock as a tidal wave towered over me and Robin before it washed us away.

My vision started to go blurry as I felt being placed on the floor.

"Two minutes left."

I glanced at Robin, who was a few inches away from me before darkness overtook me.

Mount Justice

September 22, 22:50 EDT

"Jay."A familiar voice said as someone gently shook my shoulders. "Jay. Wake up."

I let out a soft groan as my eyes opened and saw Robin staring at me.

"Is it over?"I asked as I stood a little.

"Yep, Blue Jay."Robin answered. "It is. Artemis saved us."

"So she got traught?"I guessed with a smirk.

Robin smirked. "You got that right, Jay bird."

I gave Robin a playful punch in the shoulder before he helped me up.

"Will you quit playing with that thing and cut us free?!"Kid Flash demanded.

I notice Artemis holding an industrial strength laser cutter while standing over by Kid Flash and Superboy.

It seemed the speedster's patience had finally run out.

Not that he had much to begin with.

"It's not working, genius."Artemis retorted. "EMP shuts down all machines, remember?"

I smiled at Superboy holding Miss M's hand as she stared at him with a lovingly expression before Red Tornado flew toward us.

"All machines present at the time."Red Tornado declared. "What has occurred?"

"Had a little visit from your family."Robin answered.

"Your extremely nasty family."Artemis added.

"I was not aware I had relations."Red Tornado responded.

"Where have you been?"Superboy demanded.

"Monitor duty on the Watchtower."Red Tornado replied and walked up to his fallen 'relatives'. "When it became clear cave communications were down...I attempted to investigate. But your zeta tubes were also non-functional. I transported to Providence and proceeded here."

Artemis tried to activate the laser cutter, but it didn't work.

"The pulse has worn off!"Kid Flash, Robin and I exclaimed at the same time.

Red Tornado turned around and I suddenly started coughing violently as I was blocked from breathing.

Then everything went black again.

Mount Justice

September 22, 23:43 EDT

"Blue Jay."A deep voice responded. "Wake up."

My eyes blinked open to find Batman staring at me while Robin stood next to him.

"Hello, Batman."I whispered with a small smile.

Batman helped me up as Robin looked at me with a relieved smile.

"She's all right."Batman assured.

"What happened here?"Superman asked.

"What happened?!"Artemis repeated with a hint of anger. "The Reds happened! Tornado and his- Wait! Where are they?"

"Gone."Robin answered with a glare. "All three of them. Gone."
