Chapter 12: Alpha Male
Mount Justice

Blue Jay's POV
I quietly munched on my waffle bar as I sat next to Robin and the others.
It's been a couple of hours since Red Tornado and his siblings attacked the Cave and no one still gave us answers on how or why this happened.
Green Arrow placed a small bowl of pretzels on the table causing Kid Flash to respond.
"Thanks, but no thanks."Kid Flash answered.
"Yeah."Robin agreed. "What we want is ours answers about Red Tornado and his siblings."
"And if Red Tornado is a traitor or not."I added in a bitter tone.
"Exactly!"Kid Flash responded and took the small bowl from Green Arrow. "Leave the bowl."
Kid Flash started to eat the pretzels as I finished the last piece of my waffle bar.
Just as Black Canary opened her mouth to say something, Superboy suddenly attacked Aqualad and slammed his against the wall.
"You knew?!"Superboy shouted in anger. "That android and his maniac family nearly killed M'gann!"
"Conner, what are you doing?!"Miss Martian asked as she flew forward.
"Kaldur knew we had traitor among us and said nothing!"Superboy admitted.
This caused me, Robin, Kid Flash and Artemis to stand up from where we stood.
"What?"I asked in shock.
"You knew?"Robin questioned.
"And didn't tell us?"Kid Flash scowled.
"I sought to protect the team from..."Aqualad started.
"Protect us from what?"Artemis demanded. "Knowledge that might have saved our lives?"
Superboy looked at Miss Martian.
"You almost died!"Superboy protested.
"Enough."Batman ordered.
The six of us turned around and saw Batman narrowing his eyes at Superboy causing him to let go of Aqualad.
"With Red Tornado...missing, the team will now be overseen by rotating supervisors."Batman stated and Captain Marvel walked forward. "Captain Marvel has volunteered to take the first shift."
"I'm really looking forward to hanging with you guys."Captain Marvel declared with a smile.
I hear Superboy whisper something to Aqualad before Batman stepped in to break the conversation.
"Red Tornado is a member of the Justice League."Batman stated. "That makes him a league responsibility. You will leave him to us. I have another assignment for this team."
Batman waved his hand and causing a holo-screen to appear behind Green Arrow and Black Canary.
"Gotham Mayor attacked by Guerilla Gorilla?"Kid Flash read.
"We'd be doing something way better with our time than this."I mumbled quietly.
"Was this the only thing he could find to distract us?"Superboy questioned over the mental link.
"Batman, please, tell me you're not sending us on this joke of a wild ape chase."Robin said hopefully.
"I never joke about the mission."Batman answered darkly.
Robin took a step back and went next to me.
Rule Number 1 in my book: Never question Batman on whatever he tells you to do.
"I've checked the sources."Batman commented. "I've studied the patterns. Mayor Hill's encounter is only the latest in a series of incidents. Aqualad, you and your team will depart for India and check this out."
I followed the others out as Kid Flash glared at Aqualad.
"Heh."Kid Flash scoffed rudely. "Your team."
I walked between Kid Flash and Robin as Captain Marvel flew towards the Bio-Ship.
"You're coming with-"Robin started.
"Sure."Captain Marvel replied. "We'll have a blast."
Captain Marvel headed into the Bio-Ship as me, Robin and Kid Flash looked at each other.
"Translation, he blames us for Red Fiasco."Robin stated. "He doesn't trust us."
Aqualad walked forward causing Kid Flash and Robin to glare at him.
"It's a big club."Kid Flash retorted.
I gave Aqualad an apologetic look before following Robin and Kid Flash inside the bio-ship.
Northern India
September 23, 21:36 EST
Aside from the fact that it took a good fourteen hours to get from Happy Harbor to the northern jungles of the Indian subcontinent and despite the Bioship's atmosphere being a bit frosty, things were going great.
Okay, I'll be honest m.
It was far from great.
The Team's interactions over the past several hours had been awkward and deathly silent.
Just to be clear, I never liked silence.
It usually made me feel insecure most of the times.
I snapped out of my thoughts when the Bio-Ship hovered over the jungle floor.
Me, Artemis and Robin used our rappelling lines to land on the ground, doing a quick perimeter search to make sure no one was watching us.
"All clear."Robin announced.
Aqualad, Miss Martian, Kid Flash, Superboy and Captain Marvel came out of the bio-ship at Robin's respond.
"Switch to stealth."Aqualad ordered and began tapping his belt buckle and turning his suit black and grey. "And we'll review mission parameters."
"Parameters?"Kid Flash retorted as he tapped the lightning bolt symbol on his chest, prompting the stealth tech in his own suit to activate. "We don't need no stinking parameters."
"It's recon."Robin added, scowling at Aqualad. "We know what to do."
Before I was able to stop him, Robin had grabbed onto my hand to drag me after him and Kid Flash as Aqualad stepped forward again.
"Kid, Robin..."Aqualad started.
"The four of us started this team because the Justice League was keeping secrets from us."Robin reminded and looked at me. "Let's go, Jay."
I gave Aqualad and the others a look before dashing off after my two oldest friends.
"Aqualad may have made a mistake not telling us about the mole."I spoke up. "But that doesn't mean you two have to be harsh on him."
"Well he didn't have to keep that secret from us, babe."Kid Flash replied.
Suddenly the three of us heard a loud screeching causing us to stop running.
We looked up and saw a group of white rumped vultures heading towards us.
"Vultures!"I shouted and took out my whip.
"I thought vultures only ate dead meat!"Robin commented.
Robin throws a batarang towards the vulture that was trying to grab him as we began to run away from them.
"Yeah, these are some very proactive scavengers!"Kid Flash declared.
"Are you guys thinking what I'm thinking?"Robin questioned.
"Kobra Venom/Splitting up?!"Kid Flash and I said at the same time.
I leapt up and started jumping from tree to tree as the vulture that was chasing me had its claws out ready to catch me.
I did a high backflip and wrapped my whip around the vulture's neck as I landed on its back.
The vulture tried to wiggle me out of its back by flying higher, but I held my whip tighter causing me to have control of it.
I made the vulture head down a bit and head onto the one that was chasing Robin.
"Robin!"I called out. "Heads up!"
Robin notice the vulture that I was on approaching causing both of us to jump out of the way as the vultures bashed into each other and got stuck in some of the tangled vines of the trees.
I used my whip to quickly wrap around a big tree branch as my other hand caught Robin from falling.
"Getting closer there, Jay."Robin teased.
"Better late than never, Boy Wonder."I answered with a smirk.
Me and Robin landed safely on the ground before we watched Kid Flash his super speed to evade the other three vultures, running up a tree and bouncing between the two of them to turn himself into a pinball to knock one of the birds out.
The vulture crashed to the ground not far from where Kid Flash managed to catch a vine and swing to safety.
"Hey, love birds! I'm alright!"Kid Flash declared sarcastically. "Thanks for asking!"
I rolled my eyes before me, Robin and Kid Flash continued walking through the forest.
The night was now somewhat peaceful and there weren't any wild animals attacking us...at the moment.
"Link established."Miss Martian's voice said in my head.
"Should he really still be giving us orders?"Artemis questioned. "And should you really be following them?"
"Listen, please."Aqualad ordered.
Kid Flash looked at me and Robin with a sarcastic look.
"Oh, great. Aqualad's voice in my head."Kid Flash scoffed. "I've so missed that."
I scowled in annoyance as Robin spoke to Aqualad.
"Hey Kaldur! KF, Jay and I were attacked by giant vultures!"Robin admitted. "Of course since we're moles, you probably think we ganged up on Jay and attacked her."
"Would you please stop being harsh for at least a minute?"I questioned with a irritated look.
"If he did, he wouldn't tell you."Artemis replied.
"Superboy, are you online or just pouting?"Miss Martian asked.
"Busy."Superboy replied shortly. "Call back later."
"What gets me is how nonchalant he is about not telling us."Kid Flash complemented.
"Well, he should be chalant."Robin insisted. "Way chalant. Extremely chalant."
"Would you guys quit saying the word chalant?!"I snapped. "We get the message! Thank you!"
"I don't get it how your not mad, pretty bird!"Kid Flash argued. "Kaldur kept secrets from us! We known each other-"
"Enough! I am actually upset because all of this 'mole' problem is bringing us part!"I shouted angrily. "We are supposed to be getting along with each other as a team instead of arguing like a bunch of little kids! You guys can argue all you want later! But right now let's focus on the mission and staying alive!"
There was a moment of silence as I slowly took a deep breath to lower down my anger.
"Sorry."Kid Flash and Robin apologised at the same time.
"It's okay."I assured with a small smile. "We're cool."
"Now that that's been settled, let's get down to business."Aqualad responded. "Captain Marvel has been captured and we must act as a team to save him."
"Under your leadership?"Kid Flash questioned. "I don't think–"
I gave Kid Flash a punch on the gut to shut his mouth and he groaned in pain as Aqualad began to speak again.
"This is not up for debate. You all chose me to lead."Aqualad commented. "When the mission is over, if you wish to select a new leader, I will happily step down. But until that time, I am in command here."
Aqualad began explaining to us his plan as we headed to find Captain Marvel.
I listened carefully so that I didn't miss out any information.
"BJ, why the heck did you punch in the gut?"Kid Flash demanded.
"One, it was funny."I answered with a smirk and frowned. "And two, you kept forgetting how much I dislike you calling me, pretty bird."
"Right...or is it because you want to see what makes me tick?"Kid Flash flirted smugly.
"Your an idiot."I muttered with a annoyed glare.
Robin quietly laughed before I sent him a glare as well.
Afterwards, me and the rest of the Team (minus Superboy) headed to the compound of the enemy which was where Captain Marvel was taken prisoner.
"I'll fly over."Miss Martian suggested.
"Negatory."Kid Flash responded. "The field extends like a dome over the whole compound."
"Pylons are insulated, but one good shock could cause a momentary gap."Robin admitted as he checked his wrist computer.
I notice a small button near the door of the compound.
"Like that one?"I suggested.
"That will do."Artemis agreed as she took out her bow and arrow.
"Then be ready to hit it."Aqualad declared. "Be ready, all of you."
Aqualad ran forward into the opening, using his eel tattoos to divert the electricity from the compound's forcefield and a small hole started to appear in it.
"Now!"Kid Flash ordered.
As soon as Kid Flash gave the signal, Artemis shot her arrow through, the projectile hitting the small button and therefore shutting down the forcefield as a whole.
Aqualad waved his hand to us causing all of us to stand up and move in.
Robin suddenly caught my hand and I looked at him.
He pointed at something causing me to follow his gaze.
There on top of the compound was a rhesus monkey with an inhibitor collar around its neck was sitting on an outcropping watching us.
Before me or Robin were able to warn the others, the monkey let out a sharp and echoing cry and even more rhesus monkeys appeared from behind the first one, all wearing inhibitor collars and all on a set course to attack us.
"Remove the collars!"Aqualad declared.
"Sounds easy when he says it!"Robin commented.
A monkey went on my back and started pulling my hair causing me to throw it off of me and whack its collar on its neck before it scurried away.
Robin noticed two other rhesus monkeys land behind Artemis and threw two batarangs towards the blonde, hitting both collars and freeing the monkeys.
Robin and I stood back to back until we saw Mallah exit the compound with a blaster on his hands.
Miss Martian tried to invisibly move past the gorilla, but Malla caught her and threw her on the floor.
"Get your paws off her, you darn dirty ape!"Kid Flash shouted.
Kid Flash rushed to hit Malla, but the monkey easily threw him out of the way.
However Miss Martian overpowered Mallah and threw him which made him break through the wall.
We all ran in and saw Captain Marvel strapped to a lab table with the Brain standing near him and a tiger on the ground.
"It's the Brain!"Kid Flash exclaimed.
"Ugh, I can see it's a brain."Artemis groaned with a frown.
"Not a brain, the Brain."Kid Flash replied.
"In the flesh, uh, so to speak."the Brain answered and looked at Mallah. "Mallah."
Mallah held up some sort of device in his fist and pressed its button causing four pylons appeared in front of the six of us and prompted the gravitational force field to bring us to the ground.
Luckily Aqualad had a plan for this.
"Miss Martian, Superboy, now!"Aqualad ordered.
Miss Martian took the remote from Mallah before the gorilla even knew what was going on and pressed a button, turning off the pylons.
Suddenly the opposite wall exploded revealing Superboy on the other side and a massive white wolf with him.
Robin and I started throwing batarangs and birdarangs at Mallah before avoiding the laser blasts from his blaster.
Aqualad dodged the Brain's laser attacks and went to release Captain Marvel causing the hero to release the unconscious tiger as well.
The eight of us now surrounded the two villains in each side of the compound.
Superboy and the white wolf confronted Mallah as he roared at them.
"Try it."Superboy retorted and hit his fist against his palm. "I hate monkeys."
"No, Mallah."the Brain said simply, seeming almost despondent. "This will not be our Waterloo."
Mallah panelled all over the Brain as his robotic body opened up to reveal an elaborate system of some sort of weapon.
"Au revoir, mes amis."the Brain declared.
"Get down!"Kid Flash yelled out.
All of us crouched down as...the lights went out.
When they came back on, the Brain and Monsieur Mallah were gone, but no one was injured.
"Wait."Kid Flash said. "That big weapon was...a light switch?"
Robin chuckled lightly as I simply frowned.
"Whelming."I retorted with a shrug.
All of us headed back to where the Bio-Ship was as I notice Kid Flash was looking remarkably giddy for some reason.
"What are you grinning about?"Kid Flash questioned.
Kid Flash held up Monsieur Mallah's beret, which he had swiped from the now-destroyed compound.
"One word."Kid Flash answered and placed the beret on his head. "Souvenir."
"Two words."Artemis retorted. "Gorilla lice."
I snickered quietly as KF quickly yanked the beret off his head, holding it away from himself.
Aqualad and Captain Marvel, and the two were removing the inhibitor collars off the rhesus monkeys that had attacked the Team earlier. After the last monkey was freed, Captain Marvel turned to his tiger friend.
"That's the last of the collars?"Captain Marvel asked and the tiger gave him a roar. "And I can count on you to keep the other animals out of trouble?"
The tiger growled again and Captain Marvel ran his hand over the big cat's head.
"Good."Captain Marvel responded. "I'll be back for a visit. Promise."
With one last roar of farewell, the tiger bounded away into the trees and Captain Marvel waved after him.
"I think I'll call him Mister Tawney."Captain Marvel admitted.
I blinked at Captain Marvel.
I was really starting to feel that there was something odd about him.
Robin and I notice Aqualad heading inside the Bio-Ship.
"Look, we need to know."Robin stated. "Why did you keep the mole intel a secret?"
Aqualad notice all of us were looking at him to give the answer of his action.
"The source of the tip was Sportsmaster."Aqualad admitted.
I bit my lip at the criminal responsible of this mess and who was also Artemis'-
"What?!"Artemis said angrily. "You can't trust him!"
"I do not."Aqualad responded. "It seemed possible, even likely...that he was attempting to divide the team with false information."
"And given how this mission went, he nearly succeeded."Robin replied. "But you had to consider it might be true."
"That's why you kept it from us, right?"I asked.
"Yes."Aqualad answered. "As leader, I did. In which case, I did not wish to alert the traitor."
"Hate to say it, but makes sense."Robin remarked.
"I am still prepared to step down."Aqualad reminded.
I raised an eyebrow at Kid Flash causing him to respond.
"All in favor of keeping Aqualad as leader."Kid Flash insisted.
This caused me, Robin and the rest of the Team to raise our hands to keep Aqualad as our leader.
I smiled at my friends as he walked up to Aqualad and shook his hand.
"Guess it's unanimous."Captain Marvel commented and began to walk away. "See you tomorrow."
"You're not coming back with us?"Aqualad asked with a surprised look.
"No."Captain Marvel responded. "Gotta fly."
Captain Marvel took off in the sky as the rest of us headed inside the Bio-Ship.
This mission ended up nearly a complete disaster, but at least everything turned out fine in the end.
