Chapter 15: Failsafe

Mount Justice

October 16th, 16:01 ETD

Blue Jay's POV

I stood with the rest of the Team as we watched an awful event with a newly-returned and rebuilt Red Tornado inside the Cave.

Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, Captain Atom, both Green Lanterns...even Batman and Superman.

They were all gone, disintegrated by whatever race of hostile aliens decided to invade Earth.

I felt a wave of panic wash over me, but I still kept my calm face on.

Then the screen in the center of the training space, turned to a second screen as another transmission comes through.

It was Zatara.

"Tornado, did you-?"Zatara asked.

"Yes, Zatara."Red Tornado answered. "We saw."

Me, Robin and the rest of the Team stood resolutely behind him, already suited up.

"Celestial defenses have failed."Red Tornado replied. "Initiate all terrestrial measures."

"Affirmative."Zatara responded. "See you in the field."

Zatara signed off as Tornado turned to look at the seven of us.

"I must join the League."Red Tornado declared. "We will protect the planet at all costs. But should we fail, the responsibility falls to you."

Aqualad made a cursory glance at us before looking resolutely at Red Tornado.

"We stand ready."Aqualad said firmly.

Red Tornado gave us a small nod before he walked over to the Zeta tubes.

"Recognised: Red Tornado 1-6."the computer's voice announced.

As soon as Red Tornado was gone, Aqualad turned towards Robin, who was standing beside me.

"Turn on GBS."Aqualad ordered. "We'll be able to follow the Justice League's efforts that way."

Robin nodded and began typing his fingers across a holo-keyboard that suddenly popped up before a screen appeared that showcased a news broadcast.

Iris West-Allen reported from Central City that multiple alien jets had attacked the city and killed several bystanders.

Flash managed to whisk away Iris in time and Zatara teleported cameraman Danny to safety.

Iris thanked Flash and the two heroes go off to save more civilians.

But when they moved to the next building...they were disintegrated.

The camera moved to Taipei, where Hawkman, Hawkwoman, Green Arrow and Black Canary were disintegrated as well.

Everything started to happen too fast for me to comprehend.

Cat Grant announced that we have lost most of our heroes, but didn't mention Wonder Woman or Red Tornado.

Robin pulled up another holo-screen from the various camera drones floating around the country.

This one was from the camera in Smallville, where Wonder Woman and Red Tornado were battling more of the smaller alien ships.

"Wonder Woman!"Red Tornado shouted, trying to convey a warning. "Above you!"

We saw Wonder Woman flying about the city, using her lasso to throw one ship at another and destroy both of them, but she too got disintegrated by the beam of light.

Red Tornado looked up to see the mothership coming down over him and he has to get out of the way, only able to watch as it lands on Smallville.

He used his hands to release tornados out in front of him, to deter ships, but they circle around him out of his range.

"Red Tornado to Cave."Red Tornado responded in our comms. "I fear I am all that remains of the League."

"RT!"Robin shouted from his comm.

It was too late.

Red Tornado was hit in the back by the yellow-orange beam as we watched in shock.

We were now the only ones left to save the Earth.

"We are Earth's heroes now."Aqualad declared strongly.

"So, what are we waiting for?"Superboy questioned. "A theme song?"

"A strategy."Aqualad answered. "Earth's weapons are ineffective and it has been made tragically clear a direct attack will not succeed."

Aqualad looked at Robin causing the Boy Wonder quickly tapped on the Holo-Glove.

"Checking satellite imagery."Robin stated. "Here's where the aliens are now."

"This one get lost."Conner said and gestured to one near the North Pole.

I saw a single red blotch in the North Atlantic ocean, a little way off from the southern coast of Greenland.

My eyes narrowed as I recognized the subarctic location and Robin did too.

"It's Superman's Fortress of Solitude."Robin admitted.

"Superman has a Fortress of Solitude?"Superboy said in confusion.

"The Fortress's power source probably caught the aliens' attention."I explained. "At least enough for them to send a scout or two rather than their entire armada."

"Must be some fortress."Superboy muttered quietly as he turned away.

"Conner."Miss Martian said softly.

"No, it's okay."Superboy commented bitterly. "I guess there's a lot about Superman I'll never know. Uh, you know."

"We will target this lone ship."Aqualad declared firmly.

"Yeah. Break it down!"Kid Flash cheered. "Build more! Hit those ugly aliens with their own mojo!"

Kid Flash punched his fist into his open hand to prove his point, but Artemis elbowed him in the side.

"Ow!"Kid Flash groaned in pain.

"Martian and Kryptonian in the house."Artemis reminded sharply.

Kid Flash turned towards Miss Martian and Superboy, who were staring at Wally, their expressions unreadable causing the speeder to scramble for a different statement.

"Uh."Kid Flash said nervously. "Not that all aliens are automatically ugly."

I rolled my eyes as I turned away from Kid Flash and Artemis and towards where Robin was fidgeting with his utility belt.

"Are you sure we can do this?"I asked quietly.

"We have to, Jay."Robin answered as he turned to look at me. "Batman, Superman and the others are not going to be there to help us. Plus, this is what we've been trained for."

"But we have been never been trained for an apocalypse where all of our mentors and parental figures get disintegrated before our very eyes."I reminded with a hint of fear.

Robin took my left hand and gave it a gentle grip.

"Don't worry, Jay."Robin assured. "We got this. But, you know we can't fully prepare for these kinds of things."

"Yeah, I know."I whispered. "But I guess all we can do is try and hope for the best."

After we placed on our new suits, we made our way to Superman's Fortress of Solitude in the southhern coast in Greenland.

Our suits were in Polar stealth instead of the usual.

Not a mode I had needed to use since Batman had outfitted all of us with the new stealth tech in their suits, but, despite the situation, it was pretty cool.

My polar stealth suit was in shades of white and light grey.

But since it was cold, I wore white trousers instead of a skirt.

Outside of the Fortress of Solitude, promptly labelled with an S on the door, the Arctic Wind howled as the alien ship sat idle.

Artemis, in winter gear, moved through the ice formations to an opening that lets her see the side of the ship.

Miss Martian was camouflaged as she flew up to the ship.

Her eyes glow green for a moment before she uses her Telekinesis to rip the end of one of the wings.

"Communications disabled."Miss Martian informed before it falls to the icy ground. "Propulsion disabled."

Artemis comes away from her hiding and fired an arrow at the center red spot on the ship's front, that expands and then immediately hardens.

Now the alien ship was firing around trying to find where we hid.

The shots got our location right and one shot landed rather uncomfortably close to us.

"And ETs are sealed inside!"Artemis declared.

Aqualad has his vantage point under the ice, as he jumps through the ice with his water bearers ready the ship sinks a little.

The laser turned to Aqualad immediately and there's nothing he can do other than brace for impact.

Wolf jumped in and knocked the shot off course and continued to hold onto it until Superboy was bracing it from on top of the ship to keep it from moving.

Kid Flash, Robin and I came out from hiding as well to land on the alien spaceship.

I tapped on my mini laptop to scan for the weaknesses in the alien spaceship.

"The weaknesses are right here in these three sections."I stated.

Miss Martian delivered three quick telekinetic blasts right where I was pointing at while Aqualad watched from the wing as Superboy yanked at the laser.

One of the refiners comes loose and both Wolf and Superboy could hear it whir to life, Superboy glanced behind him but continued yanking on it.

But then Wolf jumped and pushed Superboy out of the way, only to get disintegrated by the laser.

"Wolf."Miss Martian whispered gently.

Robin tapped away on his Holo-glove and checked every wavelength he can think of.

"There was no indication of feedback."Robin informed quietly and looked at Superboy. "I'm sorry."

"Can't do anything for him now."Superboy replied and yanked the laser off. "Let's go."

Miss Martian watched the laser came loose with surprise, then called the camouflaged Bio-Ship to our location.

Superboy heard it and jumped onto it before it stopped.

The clone swung the laser over and Miss Martian placed her hands on the ship, communicating with it, the hull of the ship moves in swirls to meet the new technology.

"Rerouting systems to integrate weapon into ship's bio-matrix."Miss Martian responded. "We'll need to de-camouflage for a few minutes."

Me, Robin and Kid Flash notice two more alien spaceships flying over our now noticeable location, then loopback.

"We may not have a few minutes."I warned.

"Miss Martian, open fire."Aqualad ordered.

"Can't."Miss Martian answered. "Weapon systems are off-line to incorporate the new cannon. And that's not fully integrated yet either."

"Gotcha covered!"Artemis assured. "Get inside! I'm almost there."

I quickly got off the Bio-Ship to go help Artemis with the three alien spaceships.

"Jay, come back!"Robin protested. "What are you doing?!"

I ignored Robin as I threw my birdarangs and Artemis released the three arrows that were nocked onto her bow at the alien spaceships.

Our weapons hit the two spaceships; one exploded in the air while the other spaceship crashed to the snow.

I froze as the laser turned towards me and Artemis causing us to make a run for it.

"Artemis!"Miss Martian called out. "Behind you!"

I froze in horror, just in time to see Artemis get disintegrated by the alien's beam.

"ARTEMIS!"Miss M and I screamed together.

No.

Artemis was gone.

My body began to tremble as Robin grabbed my hand to take me back to the Bio-Ship.

"Get inside."Aqualad ordered. "All of you."

Aqualad ran forward with his water bearers out and coming to a stop where the ice has been brokenand used his attack to create a torrent of water that ripped apart the ice.

The alien spaceship was brought up nearly thirty feet into the air and Aqualad brought both his bearers in front of him causing the water to turn into giant icicles that go straight through the ship and blow it up.

I felt a few tears roll down my cheeks as Robin comforted me in his arms.

"They're dead."Kid Flash growled. "Every single alien. If it's the last thing I do."

Miss Martian fought back tears as she piloted the Bio-Ship, but her breaths showed how much she's holding back from sobbing at our dead friend.

However Kid Flash lost his temper and takes it out on the console in front of him.

I, on the other hand, just sat down quietly as a wave of guilt washed over me.

Artemis was just close to me and I didn't even try to save her.

Robin placed a hand onto mine as I looked at him.

"I could've saved her, Dick."I replied quietly. "I was right there."

"There was nothing you could've done, Emi."Robin answered. "If you had done anything, you probably would've gotten hit by the cannon as well."

"I could've tried at least."I mumbled.

I looked at Robin quietly before Aqualad stood up from his seat to talk to us.

"There will be time to mourn later. Now we have a job to do."Aqualad reminded. "Defend the Earth and ensure Artemis' sacrifice was not in vain."

"Back to the Cave?"Miss Martian asked as she dried her tears away

"The Hall of Justice."Aqualad admitted. "The human race must know that there are still heroes defending them. There is still hope."

Miss Martian nodded as she flew the Bio-Ship to Washington, D.C.

I wanted to take out my iphone to call Alfred and my close friends to check if they were alright, but I knew I couldn't since we were in the middle of a mission to save the Earth from destruction.

The United States military was already fending off another attack at the Hall by the time the Bio-Ship flew into D.C.'s airspace.

The Bio-Ship was still camouflaged to not alert any of the invading ships to their presence, and as such, that allowed M'gann to fly it silently until it was directly behind four of the ships.

And then, using the new cannon the Team had gotten in the arctic, the one they had gotten with way too high of a price, the Bio-Ship opened fire and disintegrated one of the ships.

This allowed Superboy to jump out of the Bio-Ship onto another one, punching the scout ship until it fell to the ground as its cannon took care of the last two.

The rest of headed out of the Bio-Ship wearing our usual suits as the soldiers cheered at Superboy.

"I don't know who you are, son."General Eiling replied. "And right now, I don't care. You wear the S, and you got the job done."

"I'm not Superman."Superboy stated.

"Tell that to the enemy."General Eiling commented before looking at Aqualad and saluted. "General Wade Eiling, U.S. Air Force."

"Aqualad, Justice League."Aqualad answered. "We'll help you salvage as many of the aliens' cannons as possible. Then we start taking back what is ours."

We all walked into the Hall of Justice and saw the statues of the fonding members of the League were completely destroyed.

I clenched my fists in anger at the view I saw in front of me.

"They're really gone."Robin said.

Miss Martian flew over to a broken statue of Martian Manhunter and started to cry.

Suddenly Miss Martian lifting up the broken part of Martian Manhunter's statue to reveal the real Martian Manhunter under it.

"Uncle J'onn!"Miss Martian remarked in joy.

Miss Martian rushed to her uncle, but Aqualad quickly blocked her path.

"M'gann, check his mind."Aqualad ordered. "Make sure he is whom he appears to be."

"It's him. He's real."Miss Martian assured. "And he's alive."

"But we saw you get disintegrated."Superboy reminded. "You and Superman and everyone."

"Yes, I remember."Martian Manhunter replied as Miss M helped him up. "But I cannot remember how I survived...or how I arrived here."

"Maybe you were density-shifting...and the beam passed right through you."Miss Martian insisted.

"Scrambling your brains along the way!"Robin remarked.

"My mind is clouded."Martian Manhunter stated. "I feel certain I had something important to tell you."

"Hello, Wally!"Kid Flash said in realisation and hit his forehead. "Come on!"

Robin and I exchanged looks with each other before we followed Kid Flash outside to where the Bio-Ship was parked.

"I knew it. Look. It's giving off Zeta-Beams."Kid Flash commented. "The same stuff that powers our Zeta-Tubes. This thing doesn't disintegrate, it teleports. Artemis is alive."

"Maybe, but..."I started.

"No maybes, birdie."Kid Flash answered. "They're all alive."

Miss Martian smiled at Martian Manhunter.

"That must have been what you wanted to tell us."Miss Martian insisted.

Suddenly more alien spaceships showed up causing KF, Robin, me and a soldier to take cover underneath a military vehicle.

"We're on our way."Aqualad declared.

"Negative."Robin answered. "We can't win this. Miss Martian, camo the Bio Ship and..."

Suddenly the Bio-Ship got disintegrated by a laser blast as Robin moved me out of the way.

"We're falling back!"Robin announced.

All of us headed inside the Hall of Justice and the door for the

"I can only authorize one at a time."Martian Manhunter exclaimed.

"Send the soldiers first."Aqualad insisted.

"Belay that."General Eiling replied. "You seven are assets we cannot afford to lose."

Martian Manhunter nodded and walked over to the Zeta-Beam teleporter.

"Override: Martian Manhunter, 0-7."Martian Manhunter said.

"Recognised."the computer camera answered. "Access granted."

All of us lined up for the Zeta-Beam and the Computer scanned us all before we entered.

"Miss Martian, B:05. Blue Jay, B:00."the computer declared. "Robin, B:01. Kid Flash, B:03."

We all arrived back inside the Cave, but I frowned when I notice Aqualad wasn't with us.

The Atlantean member in our team was gone.

Me and the rest of the Team gathered around while Martian Manhunter sat down, trying to recover his memory.

"Our mission is clear."Robin explained. "If we believe the aliens...have been teleporting victims..."

"We do."Kid Flash interrupted.

"Then the only reasonable detention facility is here."Robin stated and showed a image of the mothership. "Their mothership. Atop what used to be Smallville."

"Does that ring any bells, Mr Manhunter?"I asked.

"No."Martian Manhunter answered. "I'm sorry."

"Superboy, you'll create a distraction."Robin instructed.

"No!"Miss Martian argued and looked at her boyfriend. "He's offering you as a sacrifice. Aqualad would never do that."

"You're right."Robin agreed. "Aqualad would sacrifice himself, a mistake that just cost us our leader. Superboy is the most likely to be perceived as threat, motivating the aliens to deploy."

"Worst case, he's teleported inside and we set him free along with Artemis...and, uh, Aqualad and everyone."Kid Flash admitted.

Robin brought his attention on me.

"Jay, we need to sent a message to the people of the Earth to not to give up."Robin declared.

"Alright."I answered firmly and started typing on a holographic keyboard. "I'll try my best."

Robin, Kid Flash, Miss Martian and Superboy as I prepared to give my message to the world when a large screen appeared in front of me.

"People of the world, this is Blue Jay speaking."I announced. "I know we are being invaded by aliens and so many people close to us have been taken away, but do not give up. We know all seems lost...the one thing the aliens cannot destroy is hope. Hope survives, because the battle is not over. Not as long as even one of us is willing to fight. It doesn't matter how many fall for new heroes will always rise to carry on bringing all their resources, their skills, their talents to bear to defeat the enemy. The people of Earth will survive this. We will rebuild and we will thrive. Never doubt and never forget. The Earth will never surrender."

After I finished my speech and closing the large screen, me and the Team got ourselves to do the next part of our plan.

Once we were all prepared, we headed for Smallville on our motorbikes.

We had to stop the aliens and avenge everyone close to us.

We just had to.

I carefully checked my surroundings through my small binoculars while sitting a tree that had bushes underneath it.

Miss Martian and Martian Manhunter went inside the mother ship causing me to put away my binoculars.

"Jay that's you and Superboy's cue."Robin declared.

I nodded. "Got it."

Robin gave Superboy a nod as I came forward and went on the clone's back.

Superboy crashed into the alien mothership as I saw the alien spaceships being deployed and jumped down stealthily into a hatch to hide from their views.

Then Robin and Kid Flash ran inside the mothership and went where I was hiding.

The atmosphere inside the mothership was quiet and there was no sign of the aliens.

"Way is clear!"Robin stated. "Go!"

Suddenly an alien robot crashed down as Miss Martian and her uncle revealed themselves.

"No."Miss Martian sobbed. "He's gone."

Miss Martian dropped on her knees as Kid Flash comforted her.

"It's all right."Kid Flash assured. "We'll find him with Artemis. I know it."

"No. My mind is clearer now."Martian Manhunter responded. "The disintegration beam is exactly that. There is no detention facility, no prisoners to rescue. Our mission holds no purpose."

"No! You're wrong!"Kid Flash argued. "The Zeta radiation proves she's alive. She's..."

"Stop it, KF."Robin demanded. "I've been scanning for League and Team signals since we got inside. They're not here. Artemis is gone."

"But our mission still holds purpose."I assured. "To destroy this mothership and save the Earth."

We quickly found the main generator of the mothership and hid quietly from being spotted.

Again there was no sign of any alien.

Wait, does that-

"This is the power core."Robin replied. "Blow this and the whole mothership blows."

As we started running, Robin and I jumped off a platform and onto another.

When we landed on the next platform, Robin began losing his balance and I quickly grabbed his hand.

However, both of us started to get dragged away by the power core and Kid Flash grabbed his other hand at the last second.

I quickly took out my grappling with my free hand to prevent me and my close partners.

A blast was sent towards by an alien robot to disintegrate us, but the Martians destroyed it.

Then Miss Martian used her telekinesis to safely drop me and the boys on the power core.

"You knew."Kid Flash accused. "You knew from the beginning why we were really here."

"How much time do we have left, Robin?"I questioned.

"Four minutes."Robin answered. "Let's go."

Me, Robin and Kid Flash rushed back to the exit, but some alien robots had found us.

All of us took cover as the robots starting firing their beams at us.

"Sixteen seconds and counting."Robin declared. "Manhunter, take Miss Martian and go."

"No."Miss Martian argued."We won't leave you."

"That's an order."Robin demanded. "We'll follow as soon as we blow those doors."

When Miss M and her uncle left the mothership, Robin, me and Kid Flash share a look with each other before charging towards the alien robots.

The next thing I knew the mothership exploded in front of us and then darkness consumed me.

Mount Justice

October 16, 16:21 EDT

I let out a gasp in horror as I saw everyone else sit up from their concrete platforms and tried to comprehend what had just happened.

How are we still alive?

"What happened in there?"Batman asked.

"The exercise, it all went wrong."Martian Manhunter admitted.

"Exercise?"Robin questioned.

"Try to remember."Batman instructed. "What you experienced was a training exercise. Manhunter psychically linked the seven of you within an artificial reality. You all knew this going in. What you didn't know was that it was a train-for-failure exercise. No matter what the Team accomplished, the scenario was designed to grow worse. Still you were aware nothing was real...including the deaths of the entire Justice League."

A look of shock grew on my face.

No wonder I didn't cry when Batman and the rest of the Justice League died.

"That is why you hardly grieved."Martian Manhunter admitted. "Even when Wolf was disintegrated before your eyes. But all that changed when Artemis died. Though consciously Miss Martian knew it was not real...her subconscious mind could not make that distinction. She forgot it was only an exercise and her subconscious took control, making all of you forget too."

Me and the others looked towards M'gann, who looked completely regretful.

"Uh, I'm...I'm so sorry."Miss Martian answered in shame.

"This isn't her fault!"Superboy snapped with a glare. "Why didn't you stop the exercise?"

"We tried. But M'gann had a death grip on the scenario."Martian Manhunter responded. "Even Artemis, who should have awakened upon her death...was so convinced she had passed, she slipped into a coma. I realised I would have to wrest control from Miss Martian's subconscious from within. But upon entering the reality, I was overwhelmed by your collective emotion. There was too much noise to think clearly to remember why I was there. The deaths of Aqualad and Superboy helped. But only when the mothership exploded and Robin, Blue Jay and Kid Flash were silenced...did my mind clear enough to remember my true purpose. To shock M'gann out of the exercise before your comas became permanent."

I closed my eyes to try and prevent the memories from what had happened to stop, but the disturbing images kept flashing in my mind over and over again.

My fellow team mates died, Dick died and I died along side them.

"My apologies."Martian Manhunter apologised. "I had no idea a training exercise could be so dangerous. So damaging."

I didn't say anything as I stood up from my concrete platform and slowly approached Batman.

In the next few seconds, I was crying quietly while Batman gave me a hug to comfort me of the trauma I received from the realistic yet awful training that was done today.
