Blue Jay

Chapter 16: Disordered

Mount Justice

October 23, 17:21 EDT

Blue Jay's POV

I sat down on a armchair, fiddling with the nightingale necklace around my neck that Dick gave me on my thirteenth birthday.

It's been a week.

A week since me and the Team had that awful traumatic virtual training simulation.

I watched everyone I cared for die and I died along side them.

I still can't get over it.

I recently been having nightmares because of that event which reminded myself of what I fear the most.

"Emma."Black Canary spoke up. "We need to talk."

I only shook my head, bringing my knees up to my chin and sinking deeper into the armchair across from Black Canary.

I was the first one to 'talk' to Black Canary, mostly because I had wanted to get it over with, rather than letting the experiences of what had happened stew inside until they finally exploded.

Now I wished I had waited.

Dick and the others were outside in the common room, waiting for their turns, and right now, I wished I was out there, rather than in here, with every fibre of my being.

"I-I can't."I whimpered quietly. "I'm...I'm scared."

"It's okay to be scared."Black Canary admitted. "Being scared means you're about to do something really brave such as talking about your problems. Do you want to finally talk about it?"

I froze, knowing what Black Canary was talking about.

"Okay."I answered as I took a deep breath before starting to talk. "You know every since I was a little girl, I always thought the superhero life was great. I mean helping those in need, fighting bad guys and making a difference. When Batman asked me to become his protégé alongside Robin, I immediately said yes without a second thought. With that I had another life as Blue Jay, the Wonder Girl."

My eyes began to tear up as I began clenching my hands tightly.

"But when I realised there was more than that. I was shocked."I admitted while clenching my fists. "I…I learned people can get hurt even those that are close to me. One wrong move and you will end up losing everything even everyone close to you. A failure. A complete failure. I don't want to be that person. Like…like…"

I slowly swallowed my saliva down before I suddenly felt a hand being placed in my quivering hands and saw Black Canary smiling at me.

"I understand, Emma."Black Canary assured with a warm smile. "Yet, even with these problems and weaknesses, all of us continue to fight on. The same goes with every superhero and protégé there is. We live our lives to the best of our ability. We give it our all. All of us will have battle wounds. We will have loss. We will feel pain. It won't be easy but it will be worth it. You will help others with the issues you have overcome and share your story with those that have no idea life could be that way. But all of that will depend on what you do."

I blinked and stared at Black Canary with a surprised expression.

"Really?"I asked quietly.

Black Canary nodded at me.

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face."Black Canary stated. "You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do. If you want to train yourself more to your true potential, then you should ask Batman. You won't know unless you try. But, you don't have to do it right away. Wait until you're ready."

I looked at Black Canary quietly before a smile crept up on my face.

"Right."I answered and stood up from the armchair. "Thank you, Dinah. For listening to me."

Black Canary smiled. "Anytime."

After I finished my conversation with Black Canary, I headed out of the room and saw the others still waiting for their turn.

"Hey birdie, are you okay?"Wally asked.

"Yeah."I responded and smiled at my team mates. "I feel better than ever. Good luck to all of you."

I simply walked away with my hands in the pockets of my pink hoodie as I felt my heart gently beating in my chest.

Emma's POV

After my conversation with Black Canary, I returned home and changed into my pyjamas.

I sat down in my bed looking at an old photo family album that belonged to my late grandmother; my father's mother.

My attention went on an old photograph that was taken in the Summer of 1937 which showed my grandmother as a little girl with her parents, older siblings, cousins and other relatives.

I could still imagine my grandmother's features as a little eight year old; flawless fair skin, long flowing red hair (naturally curled at the ends), light blue eyes with naturally groomed eyelashes and thick eyebrows.

My dad was an American but he was of Russian Jewish-German parentage.

The Gurenko family were a rich wealthy Jewish family living in Saint Petersburg and I remember Grandmother Annika telling me that her own grandmother gave birth to 15 children, so the family became sort of big.

She said she was the youngest child, but was fairly loved like her older siblings.

Grandmother said she was living a bright happy life with her whole family…until the Nazi rise to power and everything changed.

During World War II, all the Jews were sent to concentration camps, which also meant Grandmother and her entire family were to be sent there as well.

However, that night my grandmother went to work on her manuscript in the basement at the time of her family's arrest and became the sole survivor.

Her whole family were sent to the concentration camps…and all of them were killed there.

The Holocaust destroyed so many lives and the happiness that my grandmother had was gone forever.

She was a young pre-teen when it all happened and had to survive the hard way.

My grandmother later found shelter by a family friend and a couple of years later she married a headstrong yet kind American soldier named Liam Vasilevich which makes him my late grandfather.

If grandmother survived through the hardships of life, I'll make sure to do the same thing as Blue Jay.

After I finished looking at the photo album, I placed it in the shelf in my room next to a stylish red Fabergé egg which was a family heirloom jewellery that was the last gift that my grandmother gave me before her death.

I snapped out my thoughts when the door opened and Corinne rushed towards me.

"Emma, come quick!"Corinne insisted excitedly. "Dad is planning to eat all of mum's dorayaki if you don't come down!"

I grinned at the mention of mum's homemade matcha dorayaki.

They're freshly baked, castella-like cakes filled with lots of red bean matcha cream.

Dorayaki with overflowing cream that my mum makes are just so tasty!

They are the best thing that you could eat for dessert!

"Alright, I'm coming!"I chuckled. "I'll race you to the kitchen!"

"Okay!"Corinne giggled. "Okay!"

Me and my little sister headed out of my room to go down stairs to join our parents.

For tonight, I'll enjoy my time with my family and deal with the challenges ahead the next day.

But I'll make sure to live my life to my best ability just like Black Canary told me to.
