Chapter 3: Fly Me To The Moon
As soon as Shinji started to fall, Misato ran over to try and grab his arm. He was just barely out of reach, and she nearly fell in alongside him. She watched on the side of the dock alongside Ritsuko, as he sank slowly to the bottom.
"SHIT!" she shouted.
She threw off her jacket and high heels. Then dove in after the drowning boy. The water was cold, and he was sinking fast. She needed to pick up her pace if she wanted to save him. Though eventually, she started to lose breath. And Shinji was falling out of sight due to the deepness of the pool. Misato realized she wouldn't survive this if she continued after him. So, in bitter frustration about not being able to save a child. Especially one who apparently knew everything about her. She quickly started to swim towards the top. She was about out of breath by the time she broke the surface of the water.
While gasping for breath, she did her best to shout for nearby mechanics with diving suits. To go down and finish the job that she couldn't do. As she swam back to the dock, Ritsuko helped her up. Two divers came from behind her and dove into the water. While watching the two men dive deeper into the pool. Ritsuko had a few questions for Misato.
"Tell me, did he show any signs of his knowledge when he was around you?"
Misato thought for a minute, but with her head hurting from the trip down. Along with the water being incredibly cold. It was hard to think back on the trip over here. Except, for one moment that she found strange at the time.
'You don't get along with your father, huh? You kind of remind me of myself.' she remembered saying. Followed by Shinji responding with:
'You have no idea.'
"Yes!" Misato said between gasps. "He did subtly remark about knowing about my past. Though I didn't think about it that much at the time."
"Any other hints at what he knows?"
"No, not that I can think of. That boy was one hell of an actor. He had you fooled when you met him as well."
Ritsuko looked away from Misato when she reminded her of that.
"That's…..true." she said, as if she was in pain when she said that.
"Hey, I messed up too. I should've noticed what was going on. So don't look down upon yourself."
Misato's words came from a good place, but they weren't that comforting to Ritsuko. For she knew that this event wouldn't only cause problems for her and Gendo. If SEELE were to find out about this, who knows what their reaction would be. Going by what Shinji said at the end of his speech. It sounded like they would go to whatever lengths necessary to cause the Third Impact. Just like Gendo…and herself.
"Let's just focus on getting you better. As well as getting Shinji back for questioning. At least he won't have to pilot the EVA anymore. Not with what he knows."
"Don't worry about me." Misato said, standing up while shivering. "Also, don't try to hide from the fact that Shinji just told me some facts that even I didn't know. After this, you're going to tell me what he meant by the EVA being his mother."
"That won't be necessary!" Gendo nearly shouted.
He walked onto the dock with a genuinely angry expression. A bit of a departure from his constant ice-cold stare. He walked up to the two women and then looked down into the water. The divers seemed to be continuing their descent. Which only angered Gendo more, due to Shunji's unpredictability. If the boy was really about to drown himself, he could've given him more information about how much he knew.
"Captain Katsuragi, I appreciate your rescue attempt, but you are not classified to know any more about the EVAs than you already know. You are hereby on medical leave for the rest of the battle, unless we reach an absolute emergency level."
Despite her shivering physical state, this information made Misato stand straight up in rage.
"That's outrageous, sir! You're willing to dispose of one of your top officials simply because of a little information being leaked. I can't even put together the full picture yet. I'm sure everyone in this room can't either."
Despite Misato's statements, this did not change the look on Gendo's face. Ritsuko wanted to step in and defend her longtime friend. But she knew that the less Misato knew, the safer she was.
"Your opinion has been acknowledged and rejected. Report to the med bay, Dr. Ritsuko will accompany you. Vice Commander Fuyutsuki and I will take command now."
Misato was about to speak up again, but Ritsuko tugged at her shoulder. Giving her a look of sympathy that tried to silently tell her to simply come along. It took everything in her power to keep herself from not swearing in her commander's face, but Misato went along with Ritsuko. Right as they were about to leave, however, one of the divers surfaced.
"He's gone, sir!"
All three of the adults on the dock couldn't believe their ears.
"What do you mean 'he's gone!'" Gendo responded.
"He's disappeared, sir. He was sinking towards the bottom, but then he stopped when he was in front of the center of the EVA. Then he seemed to make contact with it, and then he simply vanished."
When Gendo and Ritsuko heard this, they tensed up a bit, because they knew what this most likely meant. And though Misato didn't entirely know what happened. She could see Ritsuko tense up, especially since she was standing so close to her. The captain kept her mouth shut though; she knew asking questions now would get her nowhere.
She also forced herself to keep quiet. When Gendo looked down with an angry and somber look. Turned to Ritsuko and said:
"On your way to the sick bay. Tell the doctors to send in Rei."
Ritsuko sighed but nodded in understanding. Though as she grabbed Misato's arm to take her along with her, a familiar thought passed through her mind.
'My father isn't worth it.' Shinji had said.
The thought constantly teased her, it made her depressed and angry. Because she knew it was true, but what could she do about it right now? Nothing, that's what. So she and Misato made their way into the hallway. Ritsuko then gave the order to start setting up Rei in the Evangelion to the two doctors. As both of the ladies watched the crippled girl groan in pain as she was rolled into the cages. They saw Gendo come up to Rei's side to help her stand up.
Ritsuko's feelings were that of anger and sadness. She took solace in the fact that the things that she was doing would save the world, or at least humanity. Alongside that, she wanted to keep her relationships private. Now they were on display for the world to see. Up for criticism on how much a hypocrite she was. Not after what her mother did.
"What happened to Rei on the day of your mother's death?" Misato asked.
Ritsuko nearly fainted when she heard that. She spun around to face her friend and slapped her.
"Shut up! You know what you're doing when you ask these types of questions."
Misato looked back into Ritsuko's eyes.
"I already knew about you and Commander Ikari. It was pretty obvious to see once you read between the lines. What I didn't know was that you and the Commander were involved in experiments involving family members."
Misato then closed the gap, so she could get in Ritsuko's face.
"I'll find out about what is going on. I was already well versed in intelligence gathering. Then Kaji taught me a few things that will come in handy, after I ask Shinji some questions."
"Continue with that attitude, and you'll never see Shinji again." Ritsuko responded.
"Please, you need me. Because from what I understand about him, I'll be the only one he can trust."
Misato walked away. Ritsuko chose to stand there, watching her as she walked down the hallway. Soaking wet and shivering every once in a while, yet Misato carried herself like the commando she was trained to be. Ritsuko knew what she was about to do. If she couldn't command the battle, then she would watch it instead.
Despite her cries of pain. Rei made her way into the EVA plug with Gendo at her side. He assured her that:
"Even without my son, we will still win this."
She didn't question why; she never felt the need to ever question his authority. She didn't even question where he was, or what happened. The original plan was that if he didn't cooperate, she would be a factor to convince him. To guilt him into piloting something that he would never want to even look at in his life. Now, for all Rei knew, he straight up disappeared.
Though as she was helped into the piloting seat, she could swear that she could hear some of the mechanics say:
"What was that kid talking about?"
As well as lines as:
"The Hell did he mean by his mother being the robot?"
Gendo especially noticed this, even if it was only being whispered. Rei knew that because of him getting angry. That those mechanics wouldn't be here the next day. Though she had no real time to think about that. As the preparations had been fully set and she was to be sealed into the plug. The last thing she saw of the outside world was Gendo smiling at her and wishing her luck. Rei smiled back, because she knew that he only really smiled for her.
As the plug was filled up with LCL, and the EVA was pushed into position. The rumblings it created aggravated Rei's injuries. Though she knew that she couldn't give up. It was her mission to continue on. If she failed, she would be replaced. So, it was best to work as hard as possible, so the replacement didn't have as much work she did.
'Why?'
This thought rang through Rei's head. Though she already knew why, she needed to live up to Gendo's expectations.
'Why his expectations and not your own?'
She didn't have expectations; she didn't need any. Infact, where were these thoughts coming from? These weren't questions she would ask herself.
'They are, you have thought about them before, but you just haven't thought about them long enough.'
True, she hadn't thought about them long. Because again, she didn't need to.
'Then why not think about them now?'
"Because there is no time." Rei said out loud.
"What did you say, Rei?" Maya asked from the Central Dogma.
"Oh, no. I didn't say anything important." she responded.
"Okay, make sure you don't talk too much during the battle. It goes against protocol." Aoba then informed her.
"Understood."
The com then changed over to Gendo, who also appeared on her screen.
"Rei, we're about to launch EVA Unit 1. How are your physical conditions? Are they a hindrance to you?"
"No, I will perform my duties accordingly." she said. Knowing full well that she could say no, but that would only mean that would simply activate another Rei. And for the sake of secrecy, they couldn't let multiple Rei's be running around. So, for now, she simply went along with the plan.
"So be it, launch Unit-01!" Gendo commanded.
As Unit-01 launched, Dr. Ritsuko made her way onto the bridge. Going up to Gendo to report to him on the news.
"While Captain Katsuragi has refused the medical room. She will stand down and watch the battle. I've sent two Section 2 agents to observe her, and make sure that she does not try anything."
Gendo then looked back at her with his typical soul piercing look. She knew full well that she should've followed orders. That this was just the easier way to deal with Misato instead of truly restraining her like he gave orders too. Though right now, his mind was more focused on the battle. As well as what his son was planning to do next. He was in the EVA, Gendo knew that for sure. What he planned to do while in there, was going to decide on whether or not Gendo was going to imprison him. Or be forced to do something much worse.
"Fine. If she does interfere, it's your responsibility."
He then turned back to the screen and focused on the battle about to commence. Everyone was on edge, the bridge bunnies and Kozo had heard about some rumblings down in the cages surrounding Shinji. Misato was disobeying orders and Ritsuko was somewhat complicite. And Rei was in a frail state that was unsuited for battle. Though it didn't matter, because the EVA had reached the top of Tokyo-3.
The sun had gone down, the moon had come up and the angel was approaching. The true start of the battle was about to begin.
Shinji had made his way from the core of the EVA towards the plug. Phasing through the blood and muscles thanks to his powers. While he remained calm, he knew that he wouldn't be able to listen to Toccata & Fugue without thinking of huge amounts of gore. This would haunt for the rest of his life, but it didn't matter. He was now watching Rei from behind her. Sending thoughts into her mind to question the fact of why she was in this battle.
He hoped it would have convinced her to stop. Though he as well as her knew she wouldn't do that. The risk was too great. He only really did it now, to soften the blow for what he was about to do next. First, he needed to wait. To see how the battle would play out.
Shinji didn't have to wait long, as on cue the Angel came over the horizon. Much like last time, it shot it's laser at the city. Rei was quick to dodge, but she was caught in the explosion. She recovered and grabbed a pellet rifle out of one of the supply buildings. Charging towards the hills to engage with it. Though she stopped short due to the reach of the power cord. Rei fired some shots to gain Sachiel's attention. Which she sure did.
Sachiel then fired a beam directly at her. Again, she dodged but got caught in the explosion. This time, severing the power cord. Now Rei only had five minutes to fight, but she was in no condition to do so. She had been whipped back and forth. Injuring herself even more than before. She was losing consciousness as well.
The EVA struggled to get up. Only for the Angel to close the distance and kick EVA down the block. Destroying more buildings and making Rei scream in more pain. She was done now, Rei felt like she had a concussion. And Angel was charging up another beam attack. Rei thought that this was it, she would be destroyed inside the EVA plug. This was the end, so she closed her eyes.
'No, you won't die today. I still need you.'
Shinji put that thought in her mind. As he materialized his hand into the plug. Hitting the eject command, thus saving Rei from he death. The beam nearly blew the head of the EVA right off. It also sent the plug flying into the hills, but Rei was still alive. She couldn't see the battle anymore and she was in no physical condition to do anything about it. She slowly fell into unconsciousness, as she realized those thoughts that she was having. Was from none other than Shinji, and for a minute there. He sounded like his father.
In the Central Dogma, everything was in near chaos. Ritsuko and Kozo gave orders to recover the EVA. While the bridge bunnies kept on shouting out data that only indicated how worse things were getting. Near the top of the Geofront, Misato and her two section 2 agents made their way to an observation window in one of the skyscrapers.
While all of this was happening, Gendo remained calm. He knew that Shinji had caused that plug ejection. He didn't know exactly how, but it would seem like something a boy like him would do. Save an injured girl from death. It's the same idea he was going to use as leverage over Shinji. Now, all he had to do was wait and see the extent of Shinji's new abilities.
Though no matter what Gendo had predicted. No matter what scenario he had laid out. Alongside all of his subordinates, as well as Misato and the section 2 agents when they reached their observing window. They all were not prepared for what happened next.
"Rei Ayanami is still alive! Though the entry plug has been damaged a little." Maya announced.
"The EVA has been for the most part all but destroyed! It's armor surrounding its face and upper body has been knocked off!" Makoto said, following Maya.
"The Angel appears to be-" Aoba's screen started incisively beeping, indicating a similar energy reading compared to Angel.
"Another power reading, this time it's coming from a rooftop located near the Angel and the EVA!"
"Get a visual on the skyscraper!" Kozo commanded.
Meanwhile, Misato asked for a pair of binoculars that one of the agents brought with them. So she could better see what was happening. Both parties looked up to the skyscraper at the exact same time.
Shinji escaped the blast and flew out of the EVA. Materializing himself and concentrating on flying. He made his way to a nearby building, where he touched down and stopped his music. He turned to face the Angel, which was still focused on the EVA. In the same direction was Rei's plug, which had landed nearby.
He knew that as soon as Sachiel started walking towards it. That it needed to be distracted and focused on him. Yet again, Shinji's head started hurting. Though this time, it wasn't the memory of his first battle with this creature. It was a genuine headache. It was painful, but Shinji reminded himself of the state that Rei was in. He had no right to complain about pain right now. Not while he could do something to save the day from near certain doom.
Shinji then hit play again so he could create a microphone. He then tapped his finger on it, and the emergency sound system from around Tokyo-3 acted as the boy's amps. With that, he spoke:
"Hey!" he shouted, causing a bit of reverb and screeching from the speakers.
The sound gained the Angel's attention. Causing Sachiel to look directly at Shinji. The boy felt incredibly scared by how it turned to look at him. With those dead hollow eyes on its face. Though he got its attention, now all he needed to do was lead him over here. Shinji didn't know if it was going to fire on him or get close to smash the building he was standing on.
Either way, it had to keep its eyes focused on him.
"Do you have music on your planet?"
Sachiel remained silent.
"Yeah, that's what I thought." Shinji's attempts to seem confident failed. Despite his experience, he was more nervous than he had ever felt.
"How about I play you some?" Shinji created a piano, but then realized that the instrument was too conventional. Not for what he had in plan. So he dissolved it, turning it into dust that blew away. Shinji then created a Gibson electric guitar and started playing a few notes.
His fingers moved across the neck of the guitar, like he had known how to play the instrument all his life. He played some all too familiar notes that even the most unknowledgeable of music history would know. A smooth jazzy rhythm, followed by legendary lyrics.
"Fly me to the moon. Let me play among the stars. And let me see what spring is like, on a-Jupiter and Mars. In other words, hold my hand. In other words, baby kiss me." Shinji sang the lyrics in his scared normal voice. Which didn't reflect the theme song.
Shinji's guitar playing was good, but he mainly focused on his guitar as he played. While briefly looking over to Rei's entry plug when he sang 'hold my hand'. As well as looking to the west, when he sang 'baby kiss me.' When he looked up at the end of verse 1 through, he nearly jumped when he noticed the Angel approaching faster than anticipated. It wasn't running, but it was sure getting close.
Shinji was still standing here, so thankfully Sachiel hadn't decided to blow him up. He wouldn't blame it for doing so, because his voice sounded like a boy going through puberty. Though, with things going the way he planned. Shinji got a smirk on his face and grew a bit more confident. Alongside that, he focused his voice on being lower and more appropriate.
"Fill my heart with song. Let me sing forevermore. You are all I long for. All I worship and adore. In other words, please be true. In other words, I love you."
Shinji's skin went cold when he sang that. He managed to hide his fear of saying those words, behind his deeper voice. Though what he couldn't hide, was the Angel's response. Sachiel nearly fell backwards; it was as if an invisible force hit it. Once it recovered, it started to speed up its stride towards Shinji. Who was now focusing on improvising a guitar solo for the song?
While he did that, he used his powers to scan the horizon. With the strum of a chord, he sent out an invisible signal to see where everyone was. Underneath him was a little girl who was hiding in her room. Further away in a skyscraper, was Misato and two agents. In the distance were the people hiding in shelters, some had even come out to see where the music was coming from. And finally, down in the Geofront, was his father and the other NERV scientists. All of them were the same in one way, however, that being they were all watching Shinji.
'Good.' Shinji thought, 'I can draw upon this for later.'
Soon, the instrumental part was over. And Sachiel was only a couple hundred yards away. Now, all Shinji had to do was lure it in closer and deliver the first blow.
"Fill my heart with song. Let me sing forevermore. You are all I long for. All I worship and adore. In other words, please be true."
Shinji really held on that last note, trying his best to hit those high notes. He briefly hit it but couldn't really nail it. Though for this next part. He made sure to close his eyes and focus. Because he didn't want to focus on Sachiel's ugly face. As well as try to remember what memories he had of his mother.
"In other words."
Shinji then focused on the EVA, lying broken and offline.
"In other words."
"I love…." a few chords later. "You."
Shinji's eyes opened to see Sachiel standing right next to him. Normally, he'd piss his pants at how helpless he seemed right now. Though his plan had worked like a charm. So now it was time to kill this beast.
"Hello beautiful." Shinji said in a sarcastic tone.
Sachiel just stood there, giving no reaction.
"You know, it's not only you who is listening to this music. Everyone here in Tokyo-3 is and it feels exciting. Like we're in a rock concert, we haven't had one of those here in Japan in a while."
Shinji stopped for a second. Expecting Sachiel to try and hit him, but still nothing.
"You know what, this is a great opportunity to tune your ears to the key of B flat. Such a magnificent key, B flat, right to A Major it's the best key in-"
Sachiel screamed in his face, breaking windows around it. The sound could be heard for miles, and Shinji was at the center of it. Though it did nothing to him, because Shinji had his headphones on. Shielding him from the blast. Once the screeching was over, Shinji simply blinked and shrugged.
"Now you're yelling at me. What am I to do?"
Shinji's face changed from confused and scared, to angry with a wicked smile.
"I have the power though, because I am louder than you."
Shinji strummed his guitar, and the city around him shook as the announcer system blared out his chord. Not only was it loud, but an energy wave also then sent Sachiel flying into the air. As Shinji allowed the guitar to blare louder, so did the Angel fly higher. Eventually, Shinji stopped the volume and started letting the Angel fall to the ground.
"So, I can always get you to shut the fuck up whenever I want too."
As Sachiel hit the ground, Shinji improvised a small solo on his guitar. This time, it was more bluesy and looser.
"But of course, I don't always make sure you're quiet. Sometimes I just like playing blues licks, that's why I'm going to-"
Sachiel got up and shot a beam attack at him. Shinji quickly deflected it with another strum of his guitar. Not only reflecting it but counterattacking with his own invisible force. Sending Sachiel flying far away into the hills. The cross-shaped explosion formed in the distance behind him. Illuminating the new rock star in a heavenly green glow.
Though he was successful, Shinji reeled back afterwards because of another headache. This time bordering on a full-on migraine. He rubbed his head and grunted in pain. Though he quickly recovered, because he knew that so many people were watching.
'Never show weakness' as Asuka would probably say.
Shinji slightly laughed at the thought of her and Kaji, as well as everyone else at NERV Berlin watching this battle unfold. They're reactions were probably the same as everyone else's, but Asuka wouldn't be awe struck. No, she'd take this as a challenge. She'd definitely start learning how to sing, play guitar and bass better than right after this first battle was over.
'Good,' he thought. 'If I inevitably fail, she'll take over after I'm dead.'
With that slightly comforting thought, Shinji took to the microphone again.
"Alright, alright, you don't want the blues. So, how about some nice laid back 90s rock. How about…..ah! Santeria, by Sublime, it's not in the key of B, but it will do." Shinji breathed in and breathed out. Then, he started playing again, this time more relaxed than before. How could he not be, the song he was playing was so laid back simple.
In a dark board room, surrounded by hologram monoliths with red numbers on them. Twelve anonymous souls watched the scene unfold. Despite their faces not being seen, some couldn't hide their surprise. Accidentally going 'what' and 'huh' every once in a while. Though one who was certainly not affected by this, was member number 1.
Who watched Shinji play with his cold lifeless robotic visor eyes. He already expected outside factors to play a role in trying to interfere with SEELE's scenario. Though this was a new and truly unexpected one. What exactly caused this, he could not determine. So, something must be done.
"Analyze the dead sea scrolls again. See if we missed any information." he announced to the room.
His cohorts were stunned by his announcement for a second, because they were so focused on the screen in front of them. Though eventually, one of them said:
"Yes sir, I'll look at it right now."
Number twelve's hologram disappeared. The only sound in the room came from the boy's guitar on their hologram. No one knew exactly what to say, but eventually someone had to say what everyone was thinking.
"What do you suppose we do with him?" Number 2 asked number 1.
Number 1 stayed silent for a minute, before responding with:
"We'll allow him to fight a few more of the Angels. While at the same time, hindering his capabilities to fight through manipulation. Eventually though, we need to kidnap and study him, and especially that."
Number 1 expanded the hologram on Shinji's player.
"Why would he need that exactly if he can play the music on his own? It must be the source of his power."
"Perhaps if we destroy it, the boy will resort to using the Evangelions." Number 3 suggested.
"Perhaps," Number 1 echoed, "though he'd probably simply rebuild it, or reach out to whomever gave that to him."
"What do you suppose even made that?" Number 4 asked.
Number 1 had a theory, but the thought was a bit made. If the dead sea scrolls were correct, then the ones he was thinking of died off billions of years ago.
"Whomever it was, it certainly wasn't human."
Number 1 look at the hologram. On his end, the hologram reflected in his visor. New thoughts began appearing in his head. Ones that wouldn't rely on the resources of SEELE. It would help him achieve the third impact even quicker. Truly making him a God in the process. All he needed to do was acquire that SDAT player. If it meant killing the boy to get to it, he wouldn't show any mercy.
'What a sad and unfortunate world. So many people are living lives of pain and suffering. Worshiping Gods they've formed to find salvation when times are hard. I shall not reveal myself, for the truth would be too terrifying for some humans to comprehend. Though I cannot be a God for them. I can at least give them heroes.'
Eve watched the fight from the space above. Still covered in blood, some of it freezing and floating off into space.
Phew, that took a while. Kudos to anybody who will get the references I put into this chapter. Like always I had fun making this chapter, though the reason why this took longer to make was because now, I'm at college. So, expect a few gaps in uploading here and there. As well as some new songs.
Thanks for reading, and don't be afraid to criticize my work in the review section. I want to make this story the best it could possibly be. And it's your continued support that makes me want to keep writing this.
