Lorelai Leigh Gilmore-Hayden Chapter 4
Freshman Year at Yale
It was move-in day. Rory and both grandmothers went shopping over the summer. She wanted to move into an off-campus apartment, but it was against school regulations. Richard used his influence to get Stephanie, Rory and Paris assigned to the same room with private baths.
The boys helped them get moved in. Move-in day was Wednesday. Classes didn't start till Monday. Rory and Steph were excited. They were ready to get settled. They planed to spend the next few days getting to know the campus as well as which food delivery services are the best and which kiosk has the best coffee.
The boys stayed and helped them eat various take-out. The next morning, the girls expected the boys to be asleep on the sofa, chair, and love seat. That is the way it always was at the pool house. When they entered the common room to get the day started, all they found was a note. 'Catch you late!' it was attached to the coffee maker and signed by all three boys. The girls just shrugged their shoulders and went about their day.
All three girls met many people. Mostly boys. The few girls they met at the welcome dorm party were pretty nice. Several times they overheard some of the party-goers mention the 'Lost Boys' Steph and Rory thought it was funny. That is what Rory's grandparents and Stephanie's mother called Logan, Finn, and Colin. After about the fourth or fifth time, Rory finally asked. "Who are the 'Lost Boys' you are referring to.
"Just some boys we know on campus," Tina said. She was the snob of the group. "Don't worry about them. My sister went here last year. She said there is a line and Freshman would not be allowed to break line."
Steph and Rory just looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders. They moved on. The next morning, Rory was on her way to the coffee Kiosk outside her dorm. She was still in her pajamas, her Mini Mouse slippers, and the kimono her grandma brought her back from Japan this summer.
Meet Marty
On her way back to the dorm she was inhaling the smell of her two coffee cups when she almost tripped over something. She stopped. It was a human. Rory wondered if he was there when she went by the first time. He appeared to be asleep. She nudged him with her toe. He grunted. She tried it again. She was sure by the way he grunted that it was a he, but he had on a woman's bathrobe.
He sat up, scratched his head, then he saw Rory standing over him with two cups of coffee.
"One of those for me?" he asked. Rory looked at him.
"No, but I guess you can have one. Who are you? What are you doing passed out in the hall? Is your dorm on the is floor? Who's bathrobe are you wearing? Are you homeless?" She paused to take a breath and he took the opportunity to speak.
"Wow, slow down. Why all the questions? Are you writing a book?" He asked. Rory thought about it for a minute.
"I might, I am a journalism major, so yeah, I will probably write a book at some point." She told him. He nodded.
"I will make a deal with you. If you will give me one of the coffees, then leave so I can get up, I will meet you in the cafeteria in 25 minutes. I will answer your question then." He told her.
She looked him over and nodded. She handed him the coffee and walked off. When she got to her dorm, Steph was up and sitting on the sofa flipping through the channel on the huge flat-screen TV her Gran-Mère insisted her Papa buy her. Rory flopped down next to her. Paris had already left for the day.
"Where is my coffee? Did you already drink it?" Steph asked her when she noticed Rory only had one cup.
"No, I gave it to the guy laying in the breezeway with the woman's robe on." She told her. Steph nodded.
"Wait, what did you say? Woman's robe on man in breezeway?" she asked. Rory nodded and laughed.
"He was asleep. I almost tripped over him. I nudged him with my toe and woke him up. He told me that if I would give him my second cup of coffee that he would meet me in the cafeteria in 25 minutes. That means I need to get a shower." Rory said as she drain the last of the coffee from her cup. She got up to take a shower.
Steph sat there for a few minutes then she jumped up. She heard the shower running. She went in and propped up on the vanity.
"Rory, you don't know anything about this guy," Stephanie told her.
"I know, but it is just the cafeteria. He is not going to kidnap me, there are too many people around. I won't let him walk me home, although I am pretty sure he already knows where I live. He was laying right outside our door." Rory told her. "Now if you will kindly leave, I would like to get out of the shower."
Steph left the bathroom. Maybe she should go to the cafeteria too.
Rory and the bathrobe guy, she found out his name is Marty, enjoyed breakfast. They found out they had a lot in common. She invited him over to watch a movie tonight. She told him that some of her friends would be there.
