Chapter 1

It was spitting rain and snow when Sheriff Cade Harper pulled up to the 16th precinct in his metallic black Chevy C10 Resto mod and turned off the 700HP 572 Chevy Big Block Turn-Key Crate Engine and walked into the 16th precinct and headed up to the SVU squad room. When he stepped through the door and came face to face with his wife of 8 ½ years CAPT. Olivia Benson mee Harper. Olivia asked, "What brings you by cowboy?"

He shot her his legendary crooked grin as he drawled in his low gravelly voice, "Just wanted to see my girl and wanted to know if you wanted to grab lunch?"

She grinned coyly as she said, "Sure just the thing I need; to have lunch with my handsome cowboy."

He chuckled as he drawled, "Let's go beautiful."

She took his hand and headed out the door. hey had just reached the threshold when they almost ran headlong into Chief of Detectives Tommy McGrath; he said, "I need to speak with you CAPT Benson."

Cade glared daggers at McGrath as he growled, "We're going to lunch; you can wait."

McGrath greatly despised the tall taciturn Sheriff of Manhattan County, and the redneck cowboy should go to back to Texas where he had come from. He remembered while he had been trying to dig up dirt on the man in order to discredit and possibly destroy him, he had discovered that the 56-year-old had been a very decorated Marine Recon sniper and Texas Ranger before arriving in New York 9 years ago and serving 5 years as a Deputy then getting elected as sheriff not once but twice. McGrath snarled as he locked eyes with Cade, "It's very important."

While they glared at each other Olivia gazed at her husband and liked what she saw. He was a short powerfully built man. He was a tall powerfully built man standing at 6'4"" tall, and weighing 195#. He had skin the color of burnished copper, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist. He had long shoulder length black hair that he kept in a low ponytail, black Buffalo Bill moustache and lip beard and piercing dark brown eyes. He wore black Wrangler Ranch Jeans, dark red pearl snap long sleeve shirt a black western Blazer, LUCCHESE MEN'S HANDMADE WALTER BLACK Bull Hide WESTERN BOOT a black RESISTOL MEN'S BLACK GOLD LOW CROWN 20X FUR FELT COWBOY HAT. He also had a stainless-steel Rolex Submariner 16610 Date on his left wrist, a sterling silver/turquoise coral/abalone bolo tie around his neck a black tooled leather scalloped Concho studded Tony Lama Cutting Champion belt with a decorative floral Montana Silversmith belt buckle stainless-steel .44 Mag Smith Wesson 629 in a black paddle holster on his right hip right behind his badge, a black tooled leather double speed loader holder/ handcuff case combo with two fully loaded 6 round speed loaders and his S&W hinged handcuffs on his left hip, a black Benchmade Claymore OTF knife in his right hip pocket a stainless steel .44 mag S&W snub nose 629 strapped to his left ankle. Olivia fearing Cade was about to knock McGrath on his ass smoothly cut in, "It can wait Chief we need to go check on Noah."

He figured she was lying but he let it go and said tersely, "Meet me in my office when around two."

She nodded as she said, "Yes sir."

And with that they were gone.

20 minutes they were each having a bacon cheeseburger and fries when Olivia asked with a quirked brow, "What was that all about?"

He took a sip of his coffee as he replied, "I just never liked that guy. I remember I first met him in 2011 right after I became a deputy; we were helping the Narco unit serve a warrant on a known stash house. Well to make a long story short the op went sideways, and we lost three men plus the two UC's and the targets. McGrath was the head of Narco and he blamed us because he said we jumped the gun."

Olivia asked, "Did you?"

Cade replied, "No you know me better than that."

She said, "I know I was just seeing how you would react."

He shot her a wink as he said, "Shoulda known."

Then he sobered up and said in hard as steel voice, "I'm goin' with you. That ain't up for debate."

She loved how his Texas drawl got more pronounced when he was angry, tired or deadly serious. She looked into his dark brown eyes and saw that there was no use in arguing with him and said as a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Alright cowboy."

He chuckled as they finished their meal, paid the bill and walked outside. Once they were outside, he pulled out a pack of Marlboro Reds and battered silver ZIPPO and stuck a cigarette in his mouth and lit it with the ZIPPO as he drawled, "Well let's go see what McGrath wants."

Olivia chuckled as they got in his truck and drove away.

While they were driving Olivia was looking first at the BCM 300 BLACKOUT REECE-16 MCMR. She peered through the AIMPOINT 6X Magnifier and AIMPOINT T2 then she replaced in the gun rack and picked up the 300 WIN MAG Mk13 Mod 7 Sniper Rifle and looked through Nightforce ATACR 5-25×56 F1 riflescope. Finally, she grabbed the .3030 Henry Golden Boy and said, "I love this rifle."

He chuckled as he said, "It oughta be I taught you to shoot long range with it."

She chuckled as she put it back in the gun rack as they pulled up to I Police Plaza (1PP).

When they entered Chief McGrath's office, they saw that Cade's oldest daughter Becky was in there as well as Cade's grandfather Commissioner Daniel "Danny" McCoy. McGrath saw them first and said, "You're late CAPT Benson."

Before she could reply Danny asked, "How's my granddaughter-in-law?"

Olivia saw Chief McGrath shoot her a look; she knew he was both curious and more than a little frightened about how she would respond. She said, "I'm doing great and so is Noah."

Danny said, Great to hear it."

Then he threw a chastising look at his grandson as he said, "Don't forget the roast like you did last Sunday."

Olivia said, "We won't' I'll make sure of it."

Danny nodded as Cade locked eyes with McGrath and asked in a low menacing voice, "Why is Becky here?"

McGrath was about to reply when Danny said, "I was wondering the same thing, Tommy."

McGrath said, "I was awarding her her gold shield."

Olivia asked, "Is this what you wanted to speak with me about?"

In truth he had wanted to ream her out about her constantly using the Sheriff's department but due to the presence of Cade and his grandfather he said, "Yes I thought her stepmother; a CPT within the NYPD would like to see her stepdaughter receive her gold shield."

Everyone in the room knew he was lying through his teeth and that he despised Cade, but they all chose to let it alone. Cade said in a voice full of sarcasm, "Thank you Tommy; we really appreciate it."

McGrath nodded as he handed Becky her badge and said, "Congratulations Detective. You report to SVU in the morning."

She nodded as a stunned but overjoyed Olivia said, "Welcome aboard."

Becky gave Olivia hug and whispered, "Sorry for not telling you sooner Liv."

Olivia released her as she said, "It's great now I'll be working with both my stepdaughters."

Cade knew that Olivia loved the girls as though they were her real daughters and they loved her like she was their real mother. He asked, "Speaking of Vanessa is she in her office?"

Becky replied as they all left McGrath's office, "I think so why?"

Danny chimed in, "He needs a warrant and thinks his middle daughter will get it for him."

Cade chuckled as he lit a cigarette and said, "It ain't like that at all."

They all gave a hearty laugh as Olivia said, "Yea right. Well, come on I gotta get back to the 16th.
