Chapter 3:

When Olivia picked up, she asked, "How did it go?"

Cade told her how it went verbatim. When he was finished, she chuckled and said, "I'm very proud of you; you didn't lose your temper. You're getting better."

He gave a hearty laugh as he joked, "God knows it was hard. I wanted to arrest em both for bein' so damned stupid. And that woman Tanya Grant was the worst. God I can't stand woke liberals."

She said, "I know but they have their uses; like combating how police treat people of color."

He chose to ignore that last statement. For he loved her with every fiber of his being but he refused to believe the police were systemically racist; sure, there were a few bad apples but to paint the whole institution as racist was just abhorrent and wrong. Instead, he said, "Noah's here with me at the Sheriff's department. I could-"

He was cut off when his second in command Under Sheriff Cecillia Ward burst into his office and said, "We have truck hijacking and possible cattle rustling on Interstate 495."

Cade said, "Alright contact the OGS Bureau of Land Management and have em send out an agent.

Cade told Olivia what was going on prompting her to ask, "What are you going to do with Noah?"

Cade replied, "I'll drop him off with Lucy."

She said, "Alright want me to send Fin out there to assist?"

Cade replied, "Yea that would be great thanks Liv. I love you."

She said, "You're welcome; I love you too. You be careful Cowboy."

He chuckled as the call was terminated and he donned his hat and coat. He said, "Come on partner we gotta make tracks."

Noah chuckled as they walked out, climbed into the truck and drove away.

30 minutes later when Cade pulled up to the scene, he saw that beside the HP SGT that had called it in SGT Odafin "Fin" Tutola and Livestock Agent Doug Fairbanks. When he walked up Fin said, "I didn't think cattle rustling was even a thing anymore."

Livestock Agent Fairbanks chuckled as he said, "Cattle Rustling big money if ya can pull it off."

The HP SGT said, "According the bill of lading the says the cattle come from 2 bar t ranch; Do you know it Sheriff?"

Cade replied as he stuck a cigarette in his mouth and lit it, "Yep I sure do; it belongs to Frank Webb. Have we located the driver?"

The HP SGT replied, "Not yet; we think they took him with them as ha hostage."

Cade said as he exhaled a bluish cloud, "We need to go talk to Webb and inform him of the high jacking as well the taking of his driver."

They were about to drive away when both Cade's and Fin's phones rang. 10 later Cade called Undersheriff Ward and informed her that she would spearhead this investigation. He and Fin need to get back and help search for a missing 8-year-old boy. And with they were gone.

When Cade and Fin arrived at the Guzman house they saw that Olivia and Detective Amanda Rollins was already there questioning Carlos, Sabastian and Gloria Guzman. Sabastian Guzman glared at his brother as he said, "Carlos was supposed to watch him."

When Carlos went to defend himself Sabastian snaped, "Where were you then huh?"

Carlos replied, "I was with my girlfriend?"

Cade asked, "Who's your girlfriend?"

Carlos replied, "Maya Jimenez."

Cade asked as he wrote down the name, "And she'll confirm your alibi?"

Carlos nodded as Fin asked, "Do you have a laptop or does Tino own a phone or a tablet?"

Sabastian said, "As I already told those two This is the only computer Tino uses that and Carlos's laptop."

Carlos said, "As we told your colleagues he must have taken it."

Cade asked, "Do y'all monitor his online presence?"

Sebastian replied, "We monitor very closely."

Cade nodded as Olivia said, "We'll keep you informed and if you get us a list of his gaming friends that would be really helpful."

All three of the Guzman's nodded as they left. When they got outside Cade cell rang. He grabbed it from his belt and spoke, "Harper."

Undersheriff Ward said, "we talked with Webb and his driver; a Jimmy Evans was just found hung in his barn."

Cade swore bitterly then he said, "Jimmy was a good guy. I want you and that stock detective to check all of the cattle auctions and packing houses. Get a couple of the uniforms to help you as well as major crimes."

Undersheriff Ward quipped, "You got it boss."

He chuckled to himself as he pocketed his phone and said, "Why don't we go talk to this Maya Jimenez."

Olivia nodded as she said, "Rollins check all of the security footage you can find; Fin; I want you and Valasco to check every name on the Guzman's list when they give it to us. No sooner had the words left her mouth when Sabastian came out and handed her the list. Sabastian said I pray that you find him before I do."

Olivia nodded as she said, "We know exactly what you mean. We'll do our best you have my, and my husband the Sheriff's word."

Sabastian nodded as he thanked her, and Cade then went back inside.
